Magary resigned this morning which is v big.
i read it every day. they annoy me sometimes with their weird "hate everything" mindset but it was a website i kept coming back to because it was different and provided different viewpoints on a lot of subjects i'm not sure i would have gotten otherwise.
their writers are certainly not heroes.

There's also a larger context. Rich people are buying up all the sites and killing the quality content in exchange for clickbait and a quick buck. It's been happening over and over. The Deadspin people are the first to stand up to them and try to screw them over.

I used to read deadspin every day a couple of years ago but have drifted away from it.
I do still enjoy Drew Margary's writing so I'll probably check out wherever he ends up at.

Magary leaving is the deathblow there. He was the only real name they had, but I enjoyed the other stuff more. Deadspin had the freedom, although probably not the resources, to do good investigative pieces that ESPN wouldn't touch due to their contracts with the major leagues.

Magary has essentially been there from the start.
Good for them for standing up to their principles. I'll miss deadspin, it will be interesting what will happen to their other sites like Jezebel, The Root, and The Onion. There were other, I'd presume, freelancers, shaming other journalists who were in similar positions with their employers but don't have the stomach to quit, calling them enablers. A very millennial without kids mouths to feed viewpoint.

Something I hate about this is that it's a big fat reminder that the good, old just for fun days of the internet are pretty much completely over. These days, if there is ever something good, it will be ruined by someone looking to profit financially.

There's a given difference between the two. You can close your eyes to it, but deadspin is the whiny hipster, too cool for school, left of the bunch, while people bitch about barstool for being conservative. Knowing hamburglar's history in the pit, I just went ahead and cracked the code for everyone. This thread got brought up because people are getting fired for sharing their political views. That's how we got here.

Barstool's sense of humor is mostly being internet trolls, thus Portnoy's tweets. They don't provide anything funny, insightful, or new to me. They also steal content, dox people, and think it's funny/entertaining to treat women like crap. It's not political to me so much as it's both sad and terribly uninteresting.

I find a lot of their twitter content humorous. Big cat is a great follow and a great guy. I don't know when this troll board started being offended by other trolls, but it's definitely a thing now. Dave is a POS, but he's still funny. He's the Trim of barstool.

I think there are power dynamics at play with trolling. When gE trolled whole fanbases, I think it's funny. When gE trolled individuals, I would now view it as mean although I'm sure I thought it was funny at the time. Barstool being a multimillion-dollar company that attacks individuals is upsetting to me (although Portnoy himself taking shots at the old editor doesn't really bother me). No doubt you've felt ganged up on by gE members at times and that was shitty. I think barstool does that to people to the 1,000th degree.
I'm sure they do have some interesting personalities in there, I just don't care to sift through the trash to find them.

That has nothing to do with why I muted Barstool. I’m not team Deadspin either. Are they team “eff Trump?” I’m guessing the last time I read Deadspin was when they broke Teo getting catfished.
I’ve basically ignored Barstool for awhile due to the muting. I did have a barstool video slip through, but it was two girls talking about how one dated a quiet guy she didn’t want to eff, but when she found out he was a eff guy, then she wanted to eff him. Seemed very on brand for barstool.
