Title: DNA testing
Post by: Institutional Control on July 14, 2019, 05:40:29 PM
Any of you guys done a DNA test?  I recently did one thru Ancestry.com.

I just had a really awkward call with my cousin about an older sibling he was unaware existed.

I really debated about whether or not to tell him. And I threw out a hypothetical about maybe not wanting to know if I had a sibling out there and when he said that he would want to know, I told him. It’s a pretty weird feeling to tell a man in his 40s that he has a sister his dad never told him about.

You don’t give it to them for free, you pay them to take your DNA.

Yeah, I dont think I'd ever do this. But I'm curious, do you feel the information you received about yourself was worth it?

My mother was adopted so it was interesting to learn more about her biological family history.

I’ve heard conflicting stuff about what the companies can do (and can be forced to do) with the info. Also heard the way they come up with the ethnicities is almost completely unreliable for the exotic ones so that 1% at the end is more likely just 0%.

I would totally do this if I wanted to burn the last semblance of privacy that I have to the ground.  I think I’d probably punch any close relatives who did it.

Did mine last year for epigenetic purposes, the ancestry stuff is pretty uninteresting to me.  The whole 23 and me stuff is blowing up family secrets on the regular across the country though.

also if you think a relative is a serial killer, don't tell him/her that you took the test...could piss him/her off...

My nephew showed up on there.  My family knows about him, but my sister didn't ( i was 9 or 10 when he was born and she was 5 or 6).  I didn't realize she didn't know and told her about him.  She was very upset nobody told her.  My brother was the... "sperm donor" for a lesbian couple and he had brief contact with the child for the first year or so.  They asked him to sign away his legal rights and he begrudgingly did.  Never saw him again.

This story has layers.

I’m especially interested in why sperm donor is in quotes.

Mainly because he didn't just go in a cup.  They did the deed until she got pregnant.  Not quite certain what he was thinking in agreeing to it, but it is what it is.

That’s one of those things where you read it and you’re like “oh I guess he means they boned” and then you’re like, wait no that can’t be it.

I don't know how the proposal happened.  He did know her beforehand(sister of another brother's best friend).  I was like 9 or 10.  My 3 brothers are all a lot older than my sister and I.  I didn't even know until I accidentally broke a picture of the kid and got scolded for it.
