Title: Big 12 Arenas
Post by: Shooter Jones on February 13, 2019, 12:31:57 PM
ITT we will talk about Big 12 arenas. Fav's? New 'nas being built? Best environments.

K-State: Very meh, but v. good for big games. Renovation in the pipe? 5-10 years out? Earlier? I'm interested to see rendos
KU: LOL, needs millions and millions in renos.
Iowa St: Smells absolutely terrible. Good-ish environment for big games.
OU: Holy crap it's bad. But they do real flames during entros, p. cool
OSU: Trash. Great history, but the renovation sucks crap. Don't sit higher than 5th row or you'll get sick from all the empty orange seats.
TCU: New renovation, but still meh. Also hate their really bright court.
BU: Currently place blows ass. New arena coming soon, rendos have me intrigued. Could be a cool place.
UT: Currently place blows ass. New arena coming soon as well. Could be a cool place too.
TTU: Decent arena, way too big? Terrible environment. Only decent when team is like the best in the world (never)
WVU: Pretty stale place, but decent old arena? V. good when they're v. good

Post pics of what you like/hate in here.

Collectively, the arenas in the conference are horrific. I've been to all of them but the new TCU arena, which seems fine on tv, and United Supermarkets Arena, lol. I agree with shooter, that the USA seems way too big.

There are some new glazing systems that have very low transmissivity under direct sunlight, so it can be done.  I'd guess that is what this is.

So basically it's like transition lens sunglasses where it will become more opaque (?) when the sun is on it?

This.

I'll really be interested to see the Mustang's full plans and some renderings of them w/ an estimated $80 mill. Ole Miss just built a brand new field house for $80-85 (closer to 100, but an estimated $15 mill of that was for an attached parking garage).

The right reno (or hell, a new $85-100 mill fieldhouse) of Bramlage could move up to one of the nicest/if not the nicest in the conference.

(also, read the OP again and injoyed my entros typo)

Doesnt AFH have some pretty intense hot spots during afternoon games? Feels like the glare shines off the backboards

This thread got me thinking about other CBB arenas I've been in, which got me thinking about Mizzou. There was no where close to the amount of crap given that Mizzou deserved to be given. They were forced to name their arena after a donor's, living, 22 year old daughter, who didn't even go to school there. Then they had to take her name off when it was discovered that she paid people to do her school work for her.

Yes, though where sunglasses are photochromic, the windows would likely be electrochromic so that they are controllable.

From the grumblings I've heard, a rough plan for Bramlage is to blow out the west (maybe north too) and make it have a few levels and premium stuff. One renovation I can think of that would be similar is Houston, where they blew out one side of the bowl and made some premium seating and suites/suite level, etc. Obviously it would be a lot different, but kind of an idea.

facilites plan here:

Thought I actually read somewhere it can raise and lower/be removed for different events to expand seating if needed. So yeah, kind of.

Can't find where I saw that and might have made that up in my head, though.

Posted this over in the football stade thread, but here is a quote I found. This 10k, more college-type atmosphere will be much better for UT.

Quote
In hopes of providing a more intimate fan experience, the new arena will be designed to seat 10,000 during basketball games and can expand to 15,000 seats for events such as concerts and shows. Students will now have seating around the floor instead of only behind the baskets.

i love windows in arenas, the galen center is LRWTP AF

I'm a big time window in arena guy too, and the Galen is one of the best. Wish there was a way to add some windows with a view of the setting or at least some silos or something from Bramlage, similar to the Galen's view of the LA skyline.

windows shmindows.  arenas need to find a way to make the environment more foreboding.  no natural light should ever reach the court.  in fact, take it easy on the artificial light too. keep it light enough to still see, but not darker than we're used to.

and also, sound system wise, find a way to pump in a very low minor chord.  so low that it's almost inaudible.  so that one player might say to another "hey do you hear that?" and the other answers "hear what?"

Also, Ahearn is far removed from regular Athletic facilities now. Not that that is a huge deal.

I'd love if they tore down Bramlage (still love it) and made a modern 10k seat Ahearnesque building complete with limestone on the outside, pitched roof, windows, but with lux boxes, suites etc. Looks like that is a pipe dream also.

do both now that track will have an updated indoor

update Ahearn to make an elite small venue for volleyball/womes bball and special events

I also think that the nature of Bram allows you to facade it however you want withoutchanging 75% of the structure.

I'll date myself.

Ahearn, like Allen, changed over the year, For the first 20 after opening in 1951, its entire interior surface was dirt. Games were played on a raised platform floor. Sometime in the ealry 70s, they put in the running track and some kind of synthetic court. That court was used only one year because it wasn't kind to legs.

Seating dropped from 13k plus when it opened to just more than 10 kin its last year. Some end zone bleachers seats had views restricted by court side. Basically little league baseball stands.  There would sometimes be mud puddles you had to walk around. In the late 70s, I watched games from the student seating, wich was courtsid to the north and the mable eastern third of the sourth court side.

It was a loud, great experience. But restrooms were a horror. Unlike in its early days, fans couldn't smoke in their seats, bbut they could go down behind the bleachers at have time and light up. There was often a haze of smoke handing around the second half. Photos from the 50s capture a constate smoke haze.
During the early 80s Blackman years, a guy I worked for bought me season tickets in the metal balcony in the west end zone. I remember watching the 96-69 win against KU from there in which a staggered VD. Valentine walked the ball up court late in the game so that we didn't score 100.

BB ended at Ahearn after 37 years. Bram is now 31 years old. Games at Doom can get just as loud, but its not as consistently crazy as when we competed for championships every year.

I agree with your recollections except the Doom can not get as loud as Ahearn.   The fans make as much noise but the acoustics are nothing like Ahearn.
 For example
Former Kansas State coach Tex Winter said in his biography Trial By Basketball: "Kansas State won a lot of ballgames because of that crowd. Many times during timeouts you couldn't hear yourself talk. All I could do was scribble a play on the floor. The crowd there never died, even in one of our lulls – the crowd would come alive and pick us up."

The other thing Ahearn had was students filled the east side bleachers and they were within six feet of the floor.  Very intimidating for other teams.  Wish they would modify Bramalage to allow students that close.  Maybe there are rules prohibitying it now but it would also get the students competing for those front row seats like we used to do a Ahearn.

Also,  The changing fire codes did drop capacity but not to 10,000.
Changing fire codes over the years forced changes to the seating arrangements that eventually reduced seating capacity to 12,220 for the 1987-1988 season, the final season of men's basketball at Ahearn.

I was just gEing with the Ahearn thing.

We're stuck with Bramlage, great practice facility next door and it's in the athletic village already.

Now, if $80 million is going to be spent on renovating part of Bramlage, I'd rather hold off and spend more to completely re-do the place. Thinking, the reno they want on the west side for premium suites/suite level, a traditional Ahearny field housey pitched roof with some limestone maybe, expanded concourse, maybe party decks or something on the ends, I don't know. Just a new and modern throw back fauxback field house. Possibly rename it Bramlage Field House or Ice Family Field House or something.

Also, I love Washington's arena. Anyone been since their latest reno?

So how does Bramlage have such a losery tradition, yet K-State has a winning record at home every season of it's existence?

Tear it down and build new on the spot and create a winnery tradition.
