TITLETOWN - A Decade Long Celebration Of The Greatest Achievement In College Athletics History => Kansas State Football => Topic started by: Pete on December 09, 2018, 10:56:31 AM

In this thread we post about our entirely apathetic endorsement of the North Dakota University guy as our next coach. I cannot predict the future. So, I have no way of knowing how this will turn out.
I don't like it, but I accept it. I mean, what choice do I have?
Having said that, I am not going to buy football tickets or anything stupid like that. But, I WILL check the box scores carefully!
-
Will drop season tickets and parking passes for the first time in a looooong time. If this spaz starts winning, might renew.
-
PP: we will have an amazing “get back to the Snyder tree” hire after the fake CK fails. Hopefully it is a staff filled with former DoD 1.0 badasses.
-

oscar (if that is your real name), I don't think you get the spirit of this thread.

“Might renew” is my endorsement.
-
Giving one year and if we don't see improvement on the field and recruiting next year I will not renew my season tickets or parking pass. Probably wouldn't consider getting them back in the future because of getting used to having my fall Saturdays back.

I won't absolutely hate it if we have a team full of tryhards who play with a huge chips on their shoulders, like it's David vs. Goliath every damn week.
-
Furthering the theme of making the most of what is probably a really shitty situation, I have identified a few facts that may help introduce this new coach and build some understanding.
First, guess what the North Dakota state bird is? I crap you not, it's a rough ridin' meadowlark! How about that, that's our god damn bird too!
His school is in Fargo, which is the state's largest city. I have been there, and I can tell you that it's a crap hole. It's the same size as Topeka, and nearly identical in every way, AND Topeka isn't that far from Manhattan. So, when the coach get's home sick for crap chain restaurants and disenfranchised overweight white people, he need only get in the ol' Dodge and head down I70. Point: He will be at ease, and able to focus on covering the spread against Oklahoma and Texas.
The Fargo airport has 2 daily direct flights to Texas (Dallas), and Manhattan (a city of half the population of Fargo) has 3 direct flights to Texas (Dallas) everyday. So, our new coach will have 50% more commercial flights to the area in which he must recruit. Again, same, but different!
-
The meadowlark is the Nebraska bird too I think. What a slut that bird is.
-

crap. I had no idea.
-
Is this what a divorce feels like? At first it hurts and there's a ton of disappointment, but then you're just glad it's over?
-

Still just one Christmas tho.
-
I'll still travel to one or two home game. Looking forward to all the Groupon specials.
-
No change.
-
If I get a good Groupon for chairbacks, I would absolutely think about going to a game. Not in August or November though.
-
I'll probably have less interest, but that's been declining steadily anyway, not exactly clitz's fault
-
Maybe shut this thread down too?
-
Watching to goEtards talk themselves into klieman was as shocking as it was depressing. A very un-goE phenomenon
-
Well I rough ridin' hate him and he sucks

Go away, loser

Who wouldn’t want the Saban of the plains?
-
was gonna post something about this weirdo but then got woke to what a filthy street walker the Meadowlark is.
-
Who wouldn’t want the Saban of the plains?
The "Saban of the Plains" line was funny.
Would I give him a shot? Sure. I'd hope for the best, as all K-Staters would.
What would that look like when we fall off televised games? I generally travel to a handful of games a year. I'd probably not. I might watch a few on K-StateHD, if I'm home.
But more importantly, my money reflects my enthusiasm. It's not tons, but it's something (more than the average bear, I know). It'd not go away, but my issue is that I've got TWO schools on my loyalty list (my eldest and I both are K-State grads, but my youngest is a land thief). So I'd probably just go to a couple more of those games, buy my first stupid crimson sweater, and silently die a little bit inside every time I had to hear that horrific, god-forsaken song.
And I'd pray, every day, that ADGT was secretly brilliant, and we had another lighting-in-a-bottle hire in Manhattan.
But I'd not bet much money on that at all.
-
Now, to discuss Kleinman. If we gave him the job and what would be a 300% raise he would be grateful. Like, a Wichita incel who finally gets married grateful. He would be loyal and would absolutely not complain if we stayed out late or went to the lake every weekend.
-
I haven't paid for football tickets for years, but have gone to most home games. I will likely continue to do so.
-
I haven't paid for football tickets for years, but have gone to most home games. I will likely continue to do so.
I will continue to watch the games on tv unless there is something else better on
-
I'm out. Not because of this dork, who is probably another Proud Paul type, but because it's just time to move on. Good luck to those stalwart, starry eyed fans who remain, though.
-
He dresses like a complete idiot, wearing different colored long sleeve shirts under polos. It's the weirdest thing.
And yesterday, he led the team out of the tunnel like a huge dork. He'll probably hold the family 4x4 and make the cameras zoom in on him.
-
I saw him yesterday when he came out of the tunnel and thought, "Hmm. He's actually a little buff. Not SLth LittreLL buff, but still looks p. muscley. And yet, he still looks immensely dorky. To look that dorky while still having sorta ripped pecs must mean you're extra dorky."
-
I wonder what kind of brand improvements and new traditions the Meadowlark will introduce? Ron had the beloved towel, and no one will ever forget the cowboy hat or playbook funeral.
-
It's possible he could end up being pretty good. Peterson ended up being a pretty good coach after Coach Hawk busted.
-
It's also possible that NDSU will become terrible at football after they lose their coach. That would be fun to watch (Well, talk about, really. It's not like you can actually watch them play.), even if he sucks for us.
-
I'm coming up with pros/cons on Klieman before I can get on the fence:
PRO: We would no longer have close games against FCS teams.
CON: We would no longer have close games against most of the B12.
-
We are totally going to crush FCS non-con teams now.
-
Definitely checks one of my boxes for a new coach.
-
I think Klieman's floor is probably something that would be acceptable to most of us. I really don't see him putting teams that win less than 6-7 games on the field once he gets his guys in place.
-
Les Miles vs The Meadowlark in the Dillons Sunflower Showdown is going to be bigger than REO Speedwagon at TPAC!
-
Fine, whatever. Just do it. I wanted someone that could recruit but I guess someone who can't recruit at all is basically the same.
-
Carson Wentz, man.
-

i honestly havent seen kstate on national tv all year. Where are you turds anyways? Fs2?
-

The guy can get 3 stars to commit to playing in the rough ridin' FCS in Fargo. You call that not being able to recruit?
-

I agree. The long shirt under polo look needs to go. At least it isnt a buffalo wild wings windbreaker from the thai curry bowl 2 seasons prior.
-
Chris Kleinman: Dresses better than an 80 year old!
Checks all the boxes. I'm in.
-
I bet Klieman will eat a whole plate full of nuts at his first nutpak, and he will also make any of his players that refuse to eat at least 6 nuts run a set of belly busters when they get back to MHK.
-
I also bet that Coach K and the Mustang down at least 40 Bud Lights between the two of them at this thing and get all sloppy before they have to speak.
-
Coach is going to hate oscar. He's going to be merciless to that goofy son of a bitch.
-

A lot of 11am kicks.
-
do not like the hire but will give him a chance, because cats. i just don't see him recruiting at a high level and that was something i was hoping for with a change in regime.
-
It's the most watched slot on ESPN :frown:
-
i just feel like our players and recruits are going to hear who we hired and say "who?" and that really bums me out.
-
Any player who can't remember Coach Klieman's name after the introduction will be doing squat thrusts until he pukes.
-
my support will depend entirely on how he treats sean.

What’s your take if he locks Sean in an equipment locker on a regular basis?

if that were to be the case, he should be criminally prosecuted.

I guess I am not really mad at Klieman. Who wouldn’t take a 700% pay raise.
I am mad at Gene. I believe that this was his plan from before he was even hired. I don’t think he really gave this thing a truly honest shot. AND, we have no recourse. If he is fired he still rides off with a huge bundle of cash into his retirement. We got worked. Good and truly worked. Makes me mad and sad.
So, I guess I will try my best to give this rough ridin' dork coach a chance. Good grief.

I agree with this and by treats it means is he on staff or not. I'm fine with a holdover or 2 as long as Sean isn't one of them.
-
anyone know whether we are going to accept the huge shipment of squat racks the LittreLL ordered before negotiations fell through, or nah?
:dunno:

I personally don't think this is going to work out.
The statistics are very clear on fcs coaches. If this truly was a personal decision by the AD, that makes it even less likely to work.
That being said, it's no fun to hope for the worst. Give this dork a shot I guess. What else are you going to do.

"Well, I guess the first thing is"
"Wait. Stop right there. Sorry, Seth, this just isn't going to work. Thank you for your time."

That being said, it's no fun to hope for the worst.
I mean, that’s kinda the point of this rebel bbs.
-
I think we are going to start kicking ass as early as next season. Our recruiting should get about 10x better, and we already have a roster sort of tailored to what Klieman likes to do offensively.
-
Dunno about ass kicking, but I do expect improvement and I think the mustang does too. In fact, I'm thinking that a big reason CK got the job is that GT figured he is the most likely to get us to a bowl next season, which will stop the bleeding much faster than other hires.
I'm legit excited about CK at this point, although I absolutely need to see that he can put together a good supporting staff from among the "big boys."
-
non-ksu fans seem to like this hire.
-
Welp, no season tickets for this crap show. :flush: :buh-bye:

Just bought season tickets for the first time!

I would've liked this hire for another school too

I liked the Beaty hire for KU

i've been hearing a lot of "k-state fans think they're alabama or something." the reality is we only seriously discussed the hc at north texas who has 3 years of experience and a couple of other g5 college coaches with limited experience as well. i don't think anyone we discussed, with the exception of venables, is really out of our league.
-
Well they all turned us down so maybe they are out of our league

I will cheer for K-State, just like I have been doing. But I probably won't go to games. Maybe 1 next year but I said that last year and never made it up.

Landed a 2* CB like a boss before he even put pen to paper. Train just keeps rolling down the tracks. All ABOARD!!!
:weirdrobert:

it will be interesting to see if klieman's schemes hold up with k-state's level of talent, or if he'll have to make adjustments to account for now having a roster filled with lesser players than he's used to coaching.

Itll be a huge adjustments going from the new England patriots to the bad news bears but we'll see. Rome wasnt built in a day and the bad news bears have to be weened through the system before CKs studs come in to play grown man football.

This thought has me feeling a little better. I wish he'd hurry up and get here because oscar needs an adjustment NOW!
-
Is Coach K a players' coach, or is he a real hardass? He looks like a real hardass to me. I bet he's charming in the living room when the parents are around to hear the recruiting pitch, and then he hulks out into a madman once the players step foot on campus.

They say he's a players coach.
Anyway guys, we need to try our hardest to meme ourselves into loving him. It's the best coping mechanism we can have. He might do well here and we need to be ready for it. Being Nancy Negs is exhausting and not fun. I haven't quite moved past the NN phase yet, but I'm working on it.

Yep.
“Would you rather be right, or happy,” is the old saying.
-
Yeah but you have to NN for a while so you can have the best of both worlds. Party if he wins but have been right if he loses.
-
My NN phase lasted a few days. I feel great now that it’s over.

bo pelini, proven good fbs coach, has mediocre results at an fcs school.
i'm ready to like klieman. being a positive sunshine pumper, but forget and disappear when crap hits the fan like ksu mbb this year, has been good for me.
-
my potential meltdown was dulled by the fatalistic certainty of there being no other possible outcome.
i will reserve any shot giving until i see if he can pull any killer staff and the # of stars he recruits
-
I am still planning on giving Meadowlark Klieman a shot. However, if I have to read many more of these ridiculous ND fan posts, I am going to say eff it and cheer against him.

So are we rolling with meadowlark as the nick?

it’s something the band started and can keep in their little section of our stadium iyam

LMAO
Does K-State welcome everyone to Manhattan regional airport with 10 band members and KSU Cheer? that was awkward.

Clams beat me to it. Our new coach has now done the hand thing one more time than I have and like clams I am also somewhat of a local Kansas state legend.

He hurt of lot of feelings because KU hired Les Miles and we didn't and Neal Brown was the "obvious safe hire" that we didn't get and it made people feel small time plus some national writers were mean. So people have been irrationally lashing out in a lot of ways.

the k-state fan base is so predictable.
we couldn't even get to the press conference before you all started romanticizing the dang north dakota state coach who for weeks was called an inferior unproven dorky loser coach who took over an "already-built" FCS program and was unworthy of the job he now holds.

Seems like a pretty normal nice looking family to me. Some of you guys are pretty weird.

All you f**ks that want to dump your season tickets and parking passes, I'll take as many as you can supply as long as they're decent seats. East side, upper level, you got what you paid for and good luck dumping them. Keep the end zone seats as well. West and East side lower level. Let's talk or just tell me where I can pick them up.
When we come running out of the locker room sporting an all black (Ft Riley Day would be good) and a veritable plethora of alternative unis on other Sats, I'll be ecstatic. One more year of the 1986 Dallas Cowboy throwbacks would have made me puke. I'll be sooooo happy when that look is the throwback. However unlike a lot of you "if it ain't HCBS, I ain't playin'" knuckleheads, I'd have still gone and watched.
Think about it for a minute. We weren't coming close to maximizing our scholarships, players were running away like the place was on fire and we stood a good chance of being out coached by the Mad Hatter if we stood pat. What choice did we have and Brent just wasn't coming. Not until his son graduates and if you figure it, that will be about the time that this contract will either be renewed or he'll be fired.
I'm stoked for the future and that starts now.

He will need to recruit. I'm not sure he will. We were overmatched at every position most games last year and it showed. He talked a lot about finding guys that want to work, get better, etc. He already says he doesn't care about stars and a lot of fans agree that stars don't matter. We can't finish 9th or 10th in the Big 12 and in the 60s nationally every year in recruiting and expect anything but mediocre results, regardless of how high of character they have or how coached up they are. I will be very interested to see who comes in with ties to Texas.
-
I just realized we had to come back in our home opener to beat South Dakota 27-24 and Coach Kli beat them 59-14 on the road. Can we have the NDSU players too?

I like to believe that most everyone who isn't a herp derp realizes that talent and recruiting stars do matter to a degree. However, this coaching search has shown me that we have more herp derp fans than I realized.

I'm joining rusty with being pro eff head the whole time. What you described isn't predictable K-State fans, it's sports fans. Irrationally like one coach over another, then act like everything is fine when you realize you aren't going to get your way. People want something to be hopeful for.
I do find the little things people have latched onto, absolutely hilarious though. That team meeting video was incredibly milquetoast, yet twitter was filled with 30s & 40s white dudes professing to needing a wall to run through.

Did anyone here catch on when the dropped the "Frisco, TX" reference when asked about recruiting TX? I think that was like a "mic drop" moment for him because of the FCS championship site but I don't think it had the impact he had thought it would.

If your goal is to make next year's playoffs then sure

If our NDSU posters can learn to pivot away from their one (admittedly) amusing topic they could be really fun additions to gE.

Yeah I had no idea what he was talking about.
-
it will be interesting to see if klieman's schemes hold up with k-state's level of talent, or if he'll have to make adjustments to account for now having a roster filled with lesser players than he's used to coaching.
All jokes aside, it's rough ridin' incredible this is actually sort of true. Or at least, it's not not true.

By the way, I kinda like him so far. Snyder turned me into a pretty dorky fan. Won over by that shining NDSU personality.

His team right now would have beat our ass, Tech’s ass, TCU, etc. this year and beyond and he has to recruit almost Canadian kids. Jesus, guys. He’s already surpassed Snyder’s crew in the last 5 years in recruiting.

Braet is legit

Our current recruiters might be able to do a better job working for a coach who actually cares about recruiting.

They don't have an 80 year old figurehead atop the program???

He's recruited quite a few KC guys, hasn't he?
-
Braet is legit
Taylor Braet may very well be legit, but I think our fanbase possibly overvalues him because he is young, energetic, and knows how to use twitter. Every other program has a guy just like him. I want to know whether he's good at his job or not. The best you can say is that we don't know yet b/c LHC Bill Snyder intentionally hamstrung him.
He's recruited quite a few KC guys, hasn't he?
Yes, he actually has, and it is nice that he has at least one market he's familiar with, but largely he has had no contact with the richest Big 12 talent pools.
-
Well you stole NDSU's lead recruiting coordinator Hank Jacobs. he is very good.
so that should help you. Klieman and Messingham the OC are both solid recruiters as well.

Messingham came to NDSU from Montana State, where he was the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach in 2016. He was the offensive and special teams quality control coach at Indiana in 2014 and 2015 after spending five seasons at Iowa State from 2009-2013 coaching tight ends (2009-2010), wide receivers (2011) and two years as the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach (2012-2013).

I don't know, we have an experienced QB, some young WRs that can't be worse than the old ones, some experience on the OL, some DL/LB experience. It's about what you can expect at Kansas State. it's not like bill was loading up on jucos to try to salvage his job like you see at other garbage level programs.
-
I think the situation for Klieman Control is a little bit trickier than it initially appears. We have lots of starters and guys with experience coming back for next year (I mean, our entire DL, LB and OL starters could very well be seniors), but it's a bit of a catch-22, because success will depend on how well and how quickly those guys can pick up whatever new systems and new plays we are running. Then, our massive junior class graduates and its back to a lot of position battles and general sorting out of all the young talent. That's going to be a couple years of growing pains as those young guys mature and the best ones start to establish themselves and lock down starting positions. I think it'll be three years before we can properly assess how good of a job he's doing...AND the 2020 recruiting class is going to be crucial because it's not only going to be his first class that's all his guys, but it's also replacing our massive (and studly) junior class. If he's smart, he'll really hit JuCo's hard in that class because our sophomore class is pretty small.
-
good analysis and I agree trey
-
Who are the studs in the junior class trey? Lenners Sky and...?
-
Who are the studs in the junior class trey? Lenners Sky and...?
Zuber, DL, OL, LB, he's talking about those who are Juniors now and will graduate after next year.
-
Who are the studs in the junior class trey? Lenners Sky and...?
Studly by comparison to the rest of the team. Starters for next year could legitimately be:
DE: Walker and Ball (and Johnston)
DT: Dishon and Davies (and Mittie)
LB: Hughes and Patton (and Sullivan)
OL: Frantz, Mitchell, Holtorf, Curl and Kaltmayer
That's 4 position groups that could be entirely made up of seniors who will all be gone after next year.
-
I hope he jucos his ass off on running backs, WR's and QB's. That's more K-State than Harley Day.
-

I’d be fine with 17 wins if he fills the pipeline with top 40’sh recruiting classes in 2020 and 2021. It would likely mean 2 bowl game seasons in a row and a really bright future. If he wins 17 and we are finishing in the 70’s with recruiting classes he can eat crap.

Here are the five things I most want to see with Klieman KSU Kats teams:
1. Jewelry and dreadlocks
2. No delay of game penalties
3. 70% (or greater) retention from commit to upperclassman
4. CBs on the line of scrimmage
5. Starting QB named before or during fall camp
-
6. Sexy new uniform combos
7. Inspirational ESPN Gameday stories about our stud players
8. Ribbon boards
9. Regular 3:00 pm kickoff times (or later)
10. Beer sales throughout the entire stadium
-
4 and 10 are all I care about
-
I'm betting on winning the TO game. TOs decide coin flips and even win you games you shouldn't be winning.
-
hard pass on 10. if you feel that you can’t enjoy a game without getting drunk, just continue to do what you’ve been doing the past 20 years. people pounding beers at football games is tacky and low brow, we don’t need the added revenue at the expense of fans who enjoy sporting events as they were meant to be watched.

Yeah, if he would have stayed another year things would be much worse.

It's true that it's better this year than it would have been next year. Having a decent quarterback for your first year is a big deal. This will give him an entire year to recruit the juco and transfers for a QB that can step in immediately in year 2, OR blow all of our minds and start yet to be recruited freshman.

Not sure this is going to be a true apples to apples comparison. WVU is going to have a rough season next year...er.. this fall with all they're losing. They've also been built for Holgies Air Raid, which Brown doesn't really follow. I don't think Klein has to change as much of our program to get it to fit what he wants... besides talent.

They are covering it because they had budgeted a bowl game in and there is literally no place cheaper in the world to go then whichever of the 2 towns in ND they are at
-
It's not everyday that you get to cover a game at the soccer hall of fame.

I'm legitimately confused about the number of K-State media at the fcs championship game, I don't get why they are there.

basically every single writer that's ever worked at the kansas city star is from similar small-town kansas and has covered real national championships, super bowls, nba finals, golf majors, etc. and their articles were read by countless thousands, not several dozens.
i shouldn't be taking shots, though, the highlight of my brief/awful sports writing career was covering a pair of chiefs games during the herm edwards era. :Yuck:

That kid is an embarrassment. I covered a lot of crap and have the same background. He strives for attention.

i'm not great at reading riley tweets but the sentiment seemed sincere, especially if you look at follow up replies? :dunno:

I think he was dead serious. I mean, observing K-State media groups, they all acted like this D2 national championship was the biggest game in K-State's history and was huge for publicity and recruiting. The only FBS coaches being talked about Saturday were Klienman, Dabo, and Saban!
Many of these same media members laughed at KU for talking about Les's National Championship, and legit FBS championship.
It's all been embarrassing and small time if you ask me. It was the pinnacle of the last month of K-State/K-State media's push to validate the hire.

Should K-State just claim the 2018 FCS National Championship? Imagine that on the back of one of the ICE jumbos.

Well technically he won a Natty as a KSU head coach, so I’ll allow it!
