Title: Bill Tribute Thread For Sentimental Qatz To Share Fun Memzys (No gE'ing Allowed)
Post by: SkinnyBenny on December 02, 2018, 01:12:18 PM
It had to happen, and it should've happened a few years ago. Everybody's time comes, but it's still kinda sad. ITT feel free to share fun Bill memories, be they huge and obvious or be they small and weird. Plenty of other threads to stink up with bitter Bill memzys, so no g'Eing in here.

Here's to you, Scheme Doctor.

One fun thing I remember that showcased LHCBS's attention to detail and general wizardry was in, maybe...2014 or so? We were playing either TCU or WVU, I think TCU. They were returning a kick and got a giant return. Then they come back from the break and Bill had calmly called the refs over and told them that they had two #2s on the field. Penalty. Long return negated. We win a closey.

What about when his daughter got proposed to during the EKU game during a timeout and he kinda feigned interest for like two seconds and then went right back to coaching with his super srs face

In Snyder 1.0, our defensive guys had the most giant shoulder pads, and absurd neckrolls, and they just looked so big and mean and funny. And simultaneously, our tight ends lined up standing with their hands on their hips like big doofuses. Very goofy way for gigant d00ds to line up.

Around 2009 as a sophomore in college Bill was doing an autograph session at the union. I went and got a poster signed, he recognized me bc my parents are townie friends. He asked if I was going to be a doctor like my dad, I said I'm ya I'd like to, he asked if I was getting straight A's. I felt a bit embarrassed bc I was struggling with a couple classes at the time. That small comment motivated me even more to get better grades and now I'm in my final year of residency and I think about that interaction all the time.

The 12 title beating Texas was fun.  So cool to see the transition of the facilities (and so cool with the fog rolling in too). 2011 sending A&M out was nice. That overtime game was so much fun.

There's just too many to list.... The guy IS K-State football.

So far, since the birth of my daughter, only 3 people have asked me if she was my granddaughter.  One of the three is LHC Bill Snyder.

We have been truly blessed to know him and have him put K-State football on the map.

After we beat OU (I think) in like 1993, he exuberantly jumped into the arms of one of our bigger coaches, either Mangino or Latina. Not subdued at all like he was in later years.

Dusting this one off...

As most people know, the weekly Bill press conferences are pretty much a waste of everyone's time because Bill never actually answers any questions with any amount of substance. So, what typically happens, is most "reporters" don't even bother to ask questions and it's usually the same 3-4 people that ask most of the questions. As we can all probably guess, one of those people is Fritchen.

I can't remember for certain, but I think it was back in 99 during the press conference before K-State played at Nebraska. As Fritchen is prone to doing, he asked this incredibly long-winded question that took about an hour for him to spit out. It was basically something like "Bill, can you talk about what it's like being in a stadium like Nebraska's with 80,000 fans, a historic stadium, they're all yelling before the game, you're underneath the stadium and you can hear them yelling and you're trying to get your players ready for the game (it goes on and on and on and then ends with) can you tell us what you're actually doing right before you take the field?"

Bill pauses for about 10 seconds (probably mocking the fact that Fritch took five minutes to ask a question) and then Bill says, "What's that game that the youngsters like? Chutes and Ladders? Is that what it's called? That's what we do."

Whatever year it was the first time A&M came up to Manhattan as a new Big XII team.  They were not ready for the Scheme Doctor that day.  Snyds did an onside kick after the first score and it physically stunned every A&M person in the stadium.  They never recovered, and their Cadet dudes were like wtf.

Few ones I remember:

I think it was like 2012/13, and like many said most his pressers were useless, but someone asked him a question about how long they waiting until the snapped the ball, and Bill said something like "oh yeah, we average like 34.6 seconds between snaps" and you knew he knew that number 100%

Another presser like from 2014 when someone talked about that SB Nation article about how K-State actually has the most spread offense out there (in terms of solo tackles, and other metrics) and he got genuinely interested cause he had never heard of that.

On a personal level, I remember at several catbackers events as a kid, he always would make time to talk to all the kids (including me) about how we where doing in school, etc.

And of course, all his little quirks, windbreakers even when it's 90 out, Nike Cortezes, "youngsters", "by and large", making the opposing team, regardless of how good or bad they are out to be world beaters, handwritten slanted notes, pregame music selection.

And I remember as a student after he came back in 2009, always driving by the stadium after a late night, and seeing one car in the parking lot, his of course.

Games I loved were the 2000 snow game vs Nubbs, 2003 winning the Big 12 vs OU, basically the entire 2011 season, 2012 vs Miami (including that loller play behind the back), 2012 vs WVU and Texas, and OU. 2014 vs OU. Actually winning the last few bowl games.

What a ride, but it had to end.

Just recently  I asked HC LHC Bill Snyder for a favor...he has no reason to remember me.  I was amazed that he responded so quickly and even had his staff reach out for additional information.

He is a man who truly cares about others.

Thank you for everything you have done for K-State, the state of Kansas, helping others and ... kicking the crap out of KU!!!!

Was in Wichita for a golf benefit for the catz women's golf team. Bill and Frank Martin were there. Lew Perkins, KU's AD at the time was on the hot seat for use of private aircraft, etc. The guy that introduced Bill was guffawing KU's bad luck and Lew's misfortunes. The largely K-state crowd laughed along. Bill took the stage and immediately said Lew was a good guy, hold your judgement, and that he respected Lew and Lew's out to do good things for Kansas and the Big XII.  I'm a K-Stater through and through and dont like KU... but I always respected Bill's class and respect of others and his enduring ability to not cast judgement or jump to conclusions.

Every KU coach since Bill came to Manhattan.

Truth is two years ago would have been the perfect year to retire. Nine wins, bowl victory against aTm. And we all would have had some misgivings about the ability of someone else to carry on.

Attended a coach's radio show in 2005, the week of the season opener vs FIU (?). My mom's work friend took me, was my first and only time in Vanier. Bill noticed I was a new face in the crowd, called me up during a commercial break and made small-talk. I was a freshman at MHS at the time.

Bill was attending a basketball tournament (for a grandson?) that my younger brother was also playing at. Was being friendly to a bunch of the kids there who wanted to meet him. My brother was maybe 8 yrs old at the time and when he met Bill straight-up asked him what happened with Ell at the Fiesta Bowl (genuinely unaware of the sensitivity). Don't remember the exact response but Bill took in stride.

I feel the same. I wanted him gone, actually for the past 2-3 years. But I can also remember over the first few years he was here, and how he would get on the press's ass when they weren't respecting the improvement, or what he viewed as slights. He really did have to fight for what the program became, and defended it at all times. And he could have left, and he didn't. And I love him for that. Because it was what K-State needed.

First week of April 1997, student alumni board has family weekend the same weekend as the old open house. Anyway me and my dad, OU grad are on Tuttle Creek Blvd., headed to the mall. We stopped at the light on Tuttle Creek and Leavenworth, look to our right and there's Bill sitting in his white Caddie, just completely cracking up at whatever he's hearing on the radio. I start pointing and freaking out showing my dad Bill is next to us. Bill looks over flashes a big smile then drives off when the light changes. This was great for me because 1997 Bill was a complete monster in the media, he wasn't beloved then, he and we were hated. It was a humanizing moment to this dude who was larger than life.

1. 1991 or 1993.  KSU comes back and beats KU, in large part because the local media's golden-boy, Glenn Mason opted against multiple field goal chip shots and went for it on 4th down.  KSU invariably held, and eked out a close win.  In the post-game press conference, the media was not pleased (they consider Snyder a fraud) and asked him if he was "embarrassed" about how his team won.  Bill just went after them and defended his players.  The media, of course went after him for the next week about how he didn't know how to win with class, but it sure solidified for me that Bill was the guy I wanted in my corner.

2.  2009.  KSU was absolutely destroyed at TTU, 66-14.  They played aTm the next game in Manhattan.  aTm was also on a roll, with a powerful offense.  I went to the game expecting the 'Cats to be destroyed.  A ton of seats were empty, and what were taken were often by people I had never seen as season-ticket holders had given away or sold tickets.  Really damn cold on top of it.  Then KSU just absolutely murdered aTm 62-14, with KSU coasting early in the 3rd quarter.  Absolute blast.

3.  2011.  The multi-overtime game vs. aTm.  The back and forth was awesome and nerve-wracking.  The final win was exhiliarating.  It felt like the demons of 1998 had finally be exorcised.

I just watched the Miracle in Manhattan. Man early Bill was such a fierce competitor with a huge chip on his shoulder. That carried over through all those 1.0 teams and how they played. Sam's account of Bill going after the press was in there and it was fun to watch.

I sent LHC Bill Snyder an invitation to my wedding (in MHK, reception at alumni center) and he didn't come but he sent back a signed picture that we had sent him of the two of us PAK'ing at BSFS. the note may have been diagonal signed. I'll have to dig it up and check.

I was a checker at Dillons during Prince’s first year. At some point one random afternoon a kind looking elderly man in a suit came through my line to buy a big pack of Ozarka water bottles, paying cash (as old people tend to do). I zipped through the transaction cause gotta keep my stats up and I don’t mess around, but as he was leaving someone shouted something like, “hey coach how’s it going?” And I was like holy crap that’s LHC LHC LHC Bill Snyder.

I can’t believe he went on to coach like 10 more years after that.

This short story is part of my collection of very brief and otherwise meaningless encounters with people that most other people would probably recognize.

During August practice in 02 or 03, players were complaining about how hot it was.  Bill addressed the concerns by showing up to practice the next day in a parka. (this was 3rd party info, but I just accept it as 100% true because lol Bill)

I scribbled 'Cross the Line...Grab the Ring' on a football for Fan Appreciation day in 1994(?) and got like 50 autographs on it.  When I got to Bill, he took it from me, stared at it...looked me in the eyes and said "Do you think we can do it?"It was really intense and I can't remember if I was able to speak.

Bill & Darrel Harbert came to my classroom to talk about doing well in school, listening to your teachers, reading, etc.  He asked if there were any KU fans, and ~5 kids raised their hand, Bill didn't skip a beat  looked at my teacher and said "You've got a lot of work cut out for you."

i was young but definitely remember his "us against the world" mindset in the 90's. we recruited jucos, scheduled soft non-con's, and everyone hated us for it. but all i remember is how fun it was to beat the crap out of teams and getting to watch the young up and comer future studs, because we were VERY deep with talent.

Somewhere in the 91-92 time frame Coach talked to a group of us students at a dinner near campus.  Never once mention football or the team just about the decisions and dedication that we made during our time at Kstate would shape the rest of our lives.  He was very genuine and his words helped convince me to quit screwing around and take care of my business.
Had a similar encounter with Dr. Wefald and he came across as an arrogant prick that seemed to be talking down to the crowd.

Took some youngsters to speak with Bill.

One young man had long hair.

Bill deadpans that it is refreshing to see a young lady playing football.

Kid is crushed.

Bill "Well if you don't want people thing you are a lady cut your hair."

Highs: Big XII Championship Game at Arrowhead to defeat "The Greatest Football Team of All Time" WOW! what a game. The first Nebraska win (Holthus' "let my people go" quote was timely and funny). The BLAZIN' MF'ing heat at Arrowhead when we played Iowa (I'll never forgive them for ruining David Allen). The USC games (in LA AND in Manhappiness) - ugly, but exciting! The whole Colin Klein senior season. Lots of bowling. So MANY amazing players and getting to watch them in live action: Locketts (all of them), Buhl, Simoneau, Leber, Pierce, Bishop, Quincy Morgan, Darren Sproles, Ell, etc. etc. etc.

Lows: Lots of bowl losses. The knife to my heart of sitting Ell (and not giving him his bowl ring!). Being on an airplane and unable to watch or follow the 1998 Big XII Championship Game, my utter disbelief talking to my wife on a PAY PHONE (!) from O'Hare to learn that we couldn't hold on to a 4th Quarter Lead. ANY and all losses to Iowa State (I mean, come ON! - especially this most recent 4th qtr meltdown). THE loss to Baylor to knock us out of #1 (I hate Art Briles). The sickening feeling of losing our key assistants to OU after the '98 season. The loss to Fresno State at home.

This truly IS the end of an era. (I hope we don't EF it up this time)  :ksu:  :emawkid:

When I was in 8th grade, Bill came to our school to talk at an assembly for some reason or another. Dunno. Anyway, at the end of the assembly he took a few questions from some students. At some point, some shithead middle schooler got the mic and asked, "Are you finally gonna beat Nebraska this year?" or "Are you ever gonna beat Nebraska?" or some other shitty question phrased as a gotcha. Bill took it in stride, didn't flinch, and said some kinda non-committal answer like "we're certainly gonna try." And then shortly thereafter he proceeded to whoop that Nebraska ass on a regular basis.

growing up in mhk I have two stories and some thoughts...

when I was a really little kid-mid 80's, my friends dad was an mhk teacher and also down on the field during games for some reason. he would give us a stack of papers which i'm guess were misprints or overprints from the teachers lounge and we would go to the top of the crappy NE bleachers, make paper airplanes out of them and them let them rip. there was nobody within one hundred feet of us (seriously) and we would just make all sorts of different kinds/designs and let them go. had a couple actually make it onto the field during a game. that was pretty exciting. that was before bill.

bills first few years and all the years before that, they would let you in at halftime for free. during what I think was the 1991 ku/state game, a friend and I didn't have tickets but wanted to watch the first half. we climbed on top of what was vanier at the time and walked across the roof to the field side and then watched the entire first quarter there. then other people followed us up and soon there were twenty people sitting on top of vanier watching the game. security finally came and asked us to get down. we went to the closest gate and said can you just let us in? the guy was like, yeah sure just go. nobody cares. it was about two minutes into the second quarter.

-----------------

kstate football was so ridiculously non important and uncool before bill showed up. maybe somebody else could've done what he did but I doubt it. it went from being "lets see if we can get a plane onto the field" and "yeah go in nobody cares, go in" to being "the thing" two years later. I had more great kstate football stories during my time there and afterwards then I can even think to put into writing. most were in mhk but a lot were on the road and those are memories and experiences that can never be taken away.  my college time at kstate was approximately 300% better because of bill and i'm not even kidding. I can't explain how great it was to have your freshman season be that first bowl game against Wyoming and then get better every single year. it was an incredible ride up and kstate would have won a national championship sometime between 1998-2003 if the whole stoops to OU thing never happened. if bob would've just stayed at florida for an extra couple of years....

i've never shook hands or said a word to bill in person but hot dang it was a good ride, tons of fun and what more could anyone have really hoped for? I guess i'll let him know the next time I see him out at dillons or wherever.

I was in school 94-99 and it was a joy to rush to the Seaton computer lab about 10am to check the rankings and see if we still had the #1 defense in the country, or what our ranking was.    I still have a fuzzy spot in my memory of a certain trip to STL in 98, but I have a lot of good memories and experiences - from frying a turkey on Fox Sports prebig 12 game vs OU to the mistake of booking airfare from the upper deck of the Dome then having to call the next day and cancel it.

So long and thanks for all the fish Bill.

1993 season I was a senior working in the sports information office and it became clear pretty quick that this team was going to be different. A few memories from that season...

Friday afternoon before the first game, we are putting game programs and game notes in all the suites (brand new press box and suites!) during walk-through and Snyder spots us sitting in one of the suites and promptly sends a low-level staffer to find out who we were. Every game after that, we loaded the suites on Saturday morning.

I got to travel to the Iowa State game (freaking streaker) and I am in the locker room post-game and Chad May just keeps talking and talking with the media. I feel a hand on my shoulder and its LHCBS, who points at May and tells me "Shut him up and get him out of here."  I gave the media a "thank you boys, but Chad has to go" and off we went. Side note, we got to Des Moines and the charter plane wasn't there yet. I was grateful to be in bus #3 because I heard Snyder was chewing people out left and right.

Finally, each Tuesday before the weekly press conference, I got to load up a bag of Arby's (including a cherry turnover) and take it to Coach in his office. He was always watching film and never once saw me, but always thanked me for bringing it in.

Twenty-five years later I still consider that season one of my favorites.

During a KSUMB banquet in 1993 we had an open seat at our table and Bill showed up and sat next to us.

In 2.0 when I started working at the University if Bill would see me in the hallways at Vanier he would always inquire what I was doing, only to feign interest once I started rambling on about wifi or whatever it was I was tackling that day.  "I don't know anything about that" he would say on more than one occasion.

We are the same age; I started KSU in 1993, too.
I also went to KSU football games with my parents and sister in the 80s, pre-Snyder.  Our parents would let my sister and I roam around the entire stadium by ourselves, because they could follow our every movement....the stands were that empty.

Okay. Great stuff in this thread.

Like daris, I was a freshman in 93-94. Its hard to fathom how far we got to see the program come just in our time there. There were gigantic steps from 89 to 92, namely just winning a game, but also the league wins and beating KU stand out. My first KU game was in 91 when we won 16-12. I had a cross country meet in Riley, Kansas that morning and a couple of friends came over with his parents after the meet was over. That was probably the real beginning of my K-State football fandom. I had been a hoops fan for several years with my earliest memories going back to the Sarge, but this was when K-State football started to approach what I felt about basketball.

I was a HS senior in 92 and drove the 2 hours from Downs, Kansas with some friends to all 3 OOC home games. Watching those 3 wins probably solidified my desire to come to K-State the next year as much as any academic program K-State provided. That season wasn't great, but by the time I arrived to Manhattan the next year, hopes were high in fall of 1993.

Boy did that season ever bring it. So many good memories; listening to the Minnesota win on the radio, beating KU, tying CU and beating OU. The ISU loss was mighty disappointing, but man that road trip with some Smith Scholarship House buddies to the Copper Bowl was the culmination of the season.

It really didn't seem like it could get any better than that... but it did.

Then it just sort of all runs together. The domination started over any Big 8 team not named Nebraska or Colorado. Regular road trips to Columbia, Ames, Norman, Stillwater, Lawrence, and Lincoln. Every fall was centered around K-State football and it became even more so as K-State hoops started to flounder. Finally in 97 we surmounted the obstacle of CU and by the fall of 98 I had my first job teaching and coaching in the same school district I am today. But K-State football remained and for several more years I managed to find student tickets from some friend or a friend's friend still in school.

But oh man, 98. Its hard to describe the magnitude of how quickly Bill built this thing, and not to just being a respectable program. Probably what most expected was that maybe he would build a program that could win 6-8 games and go to bowls regularly, but oh no, we got so much more. In 98 we were legit and we proved it all season long. I still truly believe that season of any and all seasons as a K-State fan is still legitimately the only true national championship caliber team that I really saw. Of course, the Nebraska game will always be the one that stands out. Simply a day and night I will never forget. But also the disappointment of St. Louis and then San Antonio. Its still hard to fathom how such a great team could have a season that ended in such a miserable fashion.

Then we had plenty of great football for the late 90s and early 00s. Nebraska wins seemed to become common. Beating an SEC opponent, even if mediocre, was fun. And then finally, beating "the best team in history" to capture a league title for the first time since the 30s. But after that sadly, a couple of bad seasons and suddenly Bill was done.

Or was he?

He came back to clearly mixed emotions, but quickly provided good football again and then we all got a few more seasons of pretty darn good football and one more that rivaled some of those late 90s, early 00s seasons. 2012 was special because Bill proved he could really do it again, perhaps against all odds. One more taste of being a national program, one more conference title. A few bowl wins. Then recently, more disappointment, reminiscent of 04 or 05.

Through it all there has been so much more good than bad. For football fans of most programs that aren't blue bloods, a lifetime of really good memories. Experiences with my friends, my family, and my sons that I won't ever forget. Sure, Bill hasn't been alone and plenty of great coaches, great players, and great staff members have helped him along the way. However, the one constant since 1989 has been one man. One eccentric, obsessed, and often misunderstood football coach.

LHC Bill Snyder.

To him I can only say thank you, its been quite a ride.

Finally, each Tuesday before the weekly press conference, I got to load up a bag of Arby's (including a cherry turnover) and take it to Coach in his office. He was always watching film and never once saw me, but always thanked me for bringing it in.

Hmm, no MHK Taco Bell yet?
I think we had Taco Bell, but we were pretty devoted to Taco Grande (I think that's the name) back then.  Also, you have to remember K-State wasn't very picky back then.  If you were willing to provide free food for a press conference, it was gratefully accepted.

I would give anything to have Coach call a presser when he returns from New York, walk out, tell the Golden Telephone joke one last time, and then walk off stage.

Elaborate.

Thank you for having me today. I get asked to speak all over the state, and country for that matter. When I arrive in each town, if I have some down time I seek out the biggest church in town. I’ve always been fascinated by large churches. Their grandure, the stained glass, and weight of their permanence.

Touring all these churches I’ve noticed a phone in Wichita with a sign next to it: $10,000 per minute. After many, many churches I finally asked the pastor what the phone was for. He replied, my son, that is a direct line to heaven. Just pick it up and you can speak with God.

Well, that’s quite a bit of money so I passed, but sure enough as I traveled from New York, to Lincoln, Texas and even Tokyo, there was a gold phone with the same sign: $10,000 per minute.

I had never really toured my church here in Manhattan, but when I did I found the same gold phone...but next to it the sign read: 45¢ per minute. I crossed Poyntz to another church: 45¢ per minute. I went next door to the Methodist Church and the pastor happened to be on the gold phone and sure enough the sign said: 45¢ per minute.

I waited respectfully for the pastor to finish and asked him, I have been all over the world and found those gold phones in many churches. All of them charge $10,000 per minute, but I have checked every church on Poyntz and they only charge 45¢...why is this, do the phones not call heaven?

The pastor placed his hand on my shoulder and said, Coach my son...these phones are in fact a direct line to heaven, but you’re in Manhattan, Kansas. It’s a local call.

What a very Bill joke. Thanks, @Blackcats.

Like many Cat fans here, I remember going to games for free before we were good, which made the Copper Bowl season magical. I mean, we tied Colorado! Colorado! That tie sent a signal to young WonderMeal that the 'Cats were for real.

One very cold night after the regular season, WonderDad took me and at least one WonderMealBro out to Dick Edwards or Briggs (can't remember), because they were giving away an all expenses paid trip to the game. I remember wondering what we would do if we won, because they weren't giving away enough tickets for everyone in the family.

We didn't win the giveaway, but the newspapers from December 30th, 1993 are still on the wall (laminated, duh) in my parents' basement. Earlier this season, WonderMeal Jr. saw some random game on the ESPN ticker that ended 52-17 and lost his mind because that was the same score as the Copper Bowl.

Cats, man.

"If you lose it... you are 9-1. And if you win it, you're still undefeated. That's... that's about where it lies."

-before '98 Nubb. Always thought that was an awesome quote.

I love after the game how he's telling the players how proud he is and what not and then he says "but I don't, I don't think that's just what you want."

Early 90's I remember getting tickets for free in elementary school.  When my dad and I didn't get free tickets we would just wait until after the first quarter to get in for free.  Back then two hot dogs and a soda didn't cost $20 and it was a large soda not a 12oz.  Parking on the east side pavement was free and later $5 not $1,000 donation.  By the mid 90's we got season tickets on the east side metal bleachers above the student section.  I didn't realize how spoiled I was to be a little kid and be above the drunk (didn't know that at the time),key rattling, tortilla flinging, toilet paper throwing, rowdy, wabash'n machines that made up the student section.

The best game by far is the Nebraska 98 game.  I remember getting up to go to the game early for something called College GameDay.  I remember the electricity and excitement in the air like it was yesterday.  Still get goosebumps thinking about it.  The student section was going crazy, everyone was jumping on the metal bleachers and yelling.  The lady in her mid 40's that sat beside me was crying because it reminded her when she was in a trailer as a tornado passed by.  That night while laying in bed my ears were still ringing from the noise and still couldn't believe what I had just been apart of.

In 2012 I remember telling my gf that I thought we would be pretty good that year and we should go to every game...home and away.  What a season to convince her to do it.  She ended up marrying me for some reason years later and joining my dad and I on football Saturdays.  I know people laugh about the Family marketing at KSU, but for me it is being with my Dad every football Saturday for the last 20 some years and I wouldn't change a thing.  Coach gave us a reason to spend all day together and looking back now I can't thank him enough.  I hope that next coach can keep KSU football going to give my daughter the same opportunity I got to spend every Saturday watching KSU football with my Dad.

It seems that people remember the empty stadium experience more fondly than anything else from the pre-Snyder era. I know I do.

It's impossible to describe the Snyder transition from the perspective of the community/townies. The wins and losses were the foundation for everything. It was so much bigger than that, though. It was like the runaway number one source of pride for the entire community.

When we started getting nationally ranked and getting nationally televised games (which was uncommon at the time), it felt like a really big deal. It was like Snyder was literally putting Manhattan on the map. Giving it something to be known for.

And everyone around town started wearing purple all the time. And started making it a point to wear it out of town. And local businesses started incorporating purple features in various ways. And you would see a powercat logo literally everywhere you looked.

growing up in mhk I have two stories and some thoughts...

when I was a really little kid-mid 80's, my friends dad was an mhk teacher and also down on the field during games for some reason. he would give us a stack of papers which i'm guess were misprints or overprints from the teachers lounge and we would go to the top of the crappy NE bleachers, make paper airplanes out of them and them let them rip. there was nobody within one hundred feet of us (seriously) and we would just make all sorts of different kinds/designs and let them go. had a couple actually make it onto the field during a game. that was pretty exciting. that was before bill.

bills first few years and all the years before that, they would let you in at halftime for free. during what I think was the 1991 ku/state game, a friend and I didn't have tickets but wanted to watch the first half. we climbed on top of what was vanier at the time and walked across the roof to the field side and then watched the entire first quarter there. then other people followed us up and soon there were twenty people sitting on top of vanier watching the game. security finally came and asked us to get down. we went to the closest gate and said can you just let us in? the guy was like, yeah sure just go. nobody cares. it was about two minutes into the second quarter.

We are the same age; I started KSU in 1993, too.
I also went to KSU football games with my parents and sister in the 80s, pre-Snyder.  Our parents would let my sister and I roam around the entire stadium by ourselves, because they could follow our every movement....the stands were that empty.

 :surprised:

'00 NU in the snow, '03 road NU win, and '03 big 12 championship, '12 championship against Texas.  4 of the biggest program wins, and i got to see them all with my brother.  those were some of the best days of my life at that time, still are in a way.  kind of an indescribable feeling that i hope we get to feel again someday soon.

2 things, both Band related:

The marching band had more than doubled in size by 97' or so. Tracz had 2 GA's that were on scholarship and a minuscule stipend to work with and help manage the marching band. Tracz met with Bill and asked for some help. After Bill listened to the whole pitch, he asked Frank what he needed. DT said he needed funding for 2 more full-time GA's to help manage this thing. Bill said he wanted to think about it......next morning Frank got a call from whoever in the hell was our AD at the time saying they are sending over paperwork for funding of 2 additional staff for the MB .......a couple years down the road, I was one of those GA spots funded by the Athletic Dept.

Copper Bowl - 93 .....after getting the invite the AD told Tracz they could not afford to take them......they were tapped out by the new press box and all the other improvements that were sorely needed around Vanier........Frank called Bill and pleaded with him about how hard these marching band kids work to support the football team......Bill told the AD that either we all go (team, band, cheerleaders, Vanier staff) or none of us are going (totally bluffing) .....point is they needed to "find the money" and do this right......Band and cheerleader got charter buses, hotels, meals...the whole 9 yards.....I never had so much fun at a bowl trip in my life

My dad attended KSU before he quit and got married.  But I grew up in a 'Cat household, no and ifs or buts.  I was a die-hard purple fan from birth and saw the ugliness from a distance (nothin' like being optimistic when Stan Parrish is hired before reality sets in).  My dad and I were never close, and the few games he went back to attend in the 70s he generally brought one or two of my brothers.

After I graduated from college and became a teacher, I opted to start making the long drives back to Manhattan a few times a year for games.  Eventually, I got him to start attending games around 1997 (not easy, he was a true work-a-holic who believed Sundays were the day you relaxed and only worked 8 hours on your business).  After a few years getting together for a few games a year, not only did our relationship improve, but he really enjoyed taking that day off (his employees noted his mood was much better at work), enough so he opted to become a season ticket holder.  After I moved back to eastern Kansas 14 years ago, he and I attended almost every game together until he feel ill about 3 years ago and eventually passed.

I can say without a doubt, without Bill turning around the program, he would have never attended those games and we would have never reconciled before he died.  The great games we attended were nice, but the time together is what truly mattered.  For that, I will always have a soft spot for LHC Bill Snyder.

What a great thread and thanks to everyone for sharing their stories.

I was just a youngster during Snyder 1.0 but remember watching ESPN all day just to see the ticker at the bottom to get an update on how the K-State game going on.

When Snyder 2.0 rolled around I was in full fandom and I don't think anything will ever top the 2012 season. Trouncing Miami then beating OU/WV. It was a roller coaster that just kept going up up up...The loss to Baylor sucked but beating Texas in Manhattan was a magical night. It was a close game until the end of the 3rd Q when Lockett caught that bomb and in that moment I knew we were going to win the game.

Then when Willie climbed on top of the old press box in the fog to do the K-S-U chant it immediately made me think of the youtube videos I watched of Willie on the pressbox doing the same thing against Nebraska in 98 or 00 ...it was magical. Thousands of people on the field with nothing but pure joy running through their veins hugging everyone they saw.

My grandpa grew up just north of manhattan and went to K-State after WWII. He was never a super fan but would listen to all the games on the radio and subscribed to powercat illustrated in the 90's which I thought was awesome. He died about a year before 2012 and when I was on the field after the Texas game I ended up next to Zach Diles and told him how proud I was of the team and about people like my grandpa and everyone else who followed 40 years of crap football but still loved Kansas State U and how much this means to them.

Is that Dave “wow” Armstrong on the play-by-play call?

This is the type of content that keeps my monthly premium subscription going!  I do have a fun memzy of Snyder 1.0 to add.  '94 was my first year at K State.  Back then it was like bizarro world to see the KSU Cats football team improve and play well and make it to a bowl game.  Sometime during that first semester my dad said "Hey if K State makes it to a bowl we should go to it" and I'm like "Great idea, I'm down."  So when that Aloha Bowl bid dropped in my dad was all "Well uhhhh I figured it would be somewhere we could drive or have a short flight to" and I told him "Yeah man that's what I thought it would be too, we don't have to go clear to Hawaii for this" but I still give him crap about it every now and then.   :D

2. what's a circuit city?

Bill’s first and I’ll argue his most important commit. As bad as our offense was Sean Snyder was the most valuable player while he was there. His ability to pin opponents deep and to flip the field when our offense was unable to move the ball was critical to LHOFHCBS’s strategy. Jonathan Beasley at #46 should be above Sean, however.

In 1996 I was 13 years old and nepotism brought me my first job as a cable puller for the jumbotron camera.  I had this dream job that paid $40 per game until late in the 2000 season.

During that run I got to watch peak K-State from the sidelines and it wasn't wasted on me.  Pre-game I would go up into the press box for my credentials. Grab an omelet or whatever they were serving, check which bowl game scouts were in the house, and then down on the field to watch warmups.  When College Gameday was in town I'd hang out near the stage and one time Lee Corso gave me a cookie because somebody gave him a whole platter as a gift and wtf does he want those for?  It was a wild time. As far as I was concerned, Snyder was God, K-State was the center of the Universe, and I had an orange armband that let me freely travel through it.

3rd favorite memory - Being in the end zone during Gramática's 65 yd field goal.

2nd favorite memory - 1998 Nebraska game.

#1 favorite memory (and the night I was fired) - 2000 Nebraska game...  The cable pulling crew is a 3-man job and I'd moved up to become the #1 cable puller right behind the camera.  A trusted member of the crew.  Because of this, I was able to get 2 of my friends on the other spots.

After the game, fans rushed the field which wasn't an uncommon occurrence, but this time was different.  Because of the costs to continually replace them, K-State had started installing goalposts that were extremely difficult to bring down.  We were covering the crowd shots like normal, but the crowd was getting visibly frustrated by their inability to tear down the goalposts which caused them to get creative.

My friends had been swallowed in the crowd and it was just me, the cameraman, and a few hundred feet of cable laying underneath the feet of thousands of fans.  There was quite a bit of tugging on the cable, but it didn't seem like a huge deal until we realized that our cord was being used to loop around the goalpost to aid in the pulling.  This enraged the cameraman and he's actually tied to the cable so he was starting to get pulled around pretty good.  He told me to go find the other guys to regain control of the cable.

As I got close to the goalposts, I saw the cable snap, and I knew it was over.  There was no more job to do.  So I did what most 17yo super fans would do and I joined the party for what ended up being a prolonged amount of time.  When I finally got back to the production truck, the cameraman had already laid the blame on me and used my celebrating as his proof.  I was fired and told I'd never work another game as long as he was running the camera, but nothing could bring down from the high of that game.

Great stories.

The enraged Cornhole fans and other angry that K-State was good fanbases made fun of K-State fans for taking so long to tear down the goalposts.

Without realizing the company that made them insured they were indestructible with a 100% free replacement guarantee.  The design featured a 2 inch welded steel plate angle support right at the critical curve in the post.

As I recall that company said the 100% free replacement guarantee was cancelled after they replaced the one torn down.

I remember how violently those cables whipped back into the crowd when they snapped. I couldn’t believe no one got hurt from that. However I think someone did fall and get injured near the railing in front of the student section, so they had to be carted from the field. My room mate’s buddy went ass over tea kettle off the crossbar into the crowd below. Never saw him again to this day . By the end of it, the crowd only managed to slowly break off the right upright. Sorry you lost your sweet gig J-von.

He was from out of town and definitely not a K-State fan.  His whole career was traveling around to work a camera at sporting events and he was good at it, but I never once saw him enjoy it.

It definitely was.  Little did I know that that most of my actual college years would be full of Ron Prince and sadness.  I'm still pretty amazing at coiling up any hose or power cord though.  It brings me back every time.

I remember rumors of concrete being involved as well but I guess they had a blindspot with the actual uprights.  I'm sure the liability issues with a falling goalpost was part of the reason they tried to go the "unbreakable" route, but it ended up making it way more dangerous.

Magnificent story telling my god. I felt like I was there with you.

Thanks, buddy!

Early in the DoD (‘93/‘94) we had easy to break goalposts, and we were tearing them down about every other game as we were breaking losing streaks with a lot teams. Remember hearing a story that the athletic dept was getting pissed about having to replace the goalpost all the time, so Snyder started paying for them with his own money. Probably another reason we got the refundable goalposts.

I know a bit about LHC Bill Snyder, and that bit is enough to 100% with certainty confirm he did not pay for them “with his own money”.

I remember the media too-do about the goalposts.  I believe the company that erected them was out of the Chicago area.  The steel plate, with the post foundation deep in the ground using concrete to shore it up.  They had "tested" them and found no way for fans to climb on them and pull them down.  I believe another university was having similar issues to KSU in those days and purchased them, and they survived.

What the company did not understand is the ingenuity of 'Cat fans.  The use of the cable described by j-von is part of that (I did not know they used a camera cable until his post) the did not anticipate.  In the news articles that covered the destruction of the post, they stated that some fans went to the parking lot and got tow-straps or tow-chains from their trucks and brought them back to get it done.  But, that would take some time and real outside-the-box thinking (you would think once in the lot, drinking, almost any fan would say screw it, I'm going to the 'Ville or a party and leave), so the camera cable makes a ton more sense to me.

Did K-State eventually move on from the indestructible goal posts? I remember storming the field in 06 and 12 vs Texas and I assume the goal posts were torn down but I honestly cant remember.

Yes, the entire industry did. They weren't indestructible and they were quite dangerous for people trying to tear them down.

Don't recall the company, stadium, or school, but there was collapsible version used as well.  Recall a field storming on TV and they would remove the padding, pull a pin at the base, and the whole thing came down pronto.

The thing I remember most about Ryan Young was how crappy he played in the aloha bowl that year. Rumor at the time was that the O Line was pissed off at Chad May because he had gotten so full of himself and bragging about how great he was that they just let him get sacked or at least put minimal effort in protecting him. I have no idea if it was true, just a message board rumor at the time. I do believe that Boston College had a phenomenal NFL talent at defensive end that year.

I heard a lot of people hated Chad May, but I don't think an O-Line would purposefully clown themselves

Boston College sacked Kansas State quarterback Chad May eight times, including a four-hit effort by end Mike Mamula, who was named the game's most valuable player. Kansas State rushed for just 30 yards, and threw for 94 more, for a total of 124 yards. Kansas State's only score came with eight seconds left in the first quarter when Joe Gordon crashed the middle of Boston College's line and blocked a punt by Jeff Beckley. Chris Sublette recovered the ball on the first hop in the end zone and the game was tied, 7–7.
However, Boston College answered with its own end zone patrol later in the half when Mamula applied the biggest of his hits on May for a safety with 2:37 left. Still, a defense that featured punter Eric Hardy, Gordon, and a pair of 10-tackle performances from Chuck Marlowe and Mario Smith kept the Wildcats within striking distance until the end. Boston College tacked on a 35-yard field goal by David Gordon with 1:18 remaining in the game to seal the win for the Eagles.
The DE was Mike Mamula and as I remember it we had some injuries and had to put Jim Heimeluski(?) up against him which was a huge mismatch.  He got destroyed all game and we looked like crap.
Thanks, that was the name. BC sacked May 8 times, including a 4-hit effort by DE Mike Mamula, the game's MVP. Young HugeCat was devastated by that game. I just don’t think anybody could believe that our oline could play that bad.

Worth watching for the neck roll and Led Zeppelin. I like Ben Leber, but I still think Jonathan Beasley should be rated ahead of him and all the others currently ranked ahead of him
[tweet]1554104672276840451[/tweet]?s=20&t=U9-u8W_dw2F2i-d9JZgq9A

Worth pointing out that Leber is/was one of the most genuinely nice K-State student athletes of all time. Just an incredibly nice dude, which was contrasted immensely by his freshman year roommate (Monty Beisel).

As glad as I was to see Bill go, I’ll never forget two things:

1) he showed up to a funeral for a young local kid. Tragic circumstances and yet he took the time to give condolences to the mom and dad. I’m still sentimental about it. He was aware of the illness during previous months, had players sign a ball for the child prior to the child’s demise, but he must have seen the obit or something. Guy was a genuine good human.

2) the beautiful October fall afternoon when that ball from Straw fell into the waiting arms of Andre Coleman to give the cats the lead in 1991 vs KU. And hanging on to win it. The last play in the end zone when a cat knocked away the potential game winning TD, I jumped in the air, caught my foot on a step, rolled my ankle. Best/worst sprain of my life.

Paul Watson led the last TD drive in '91. Straw beat UNT in '89 on the last play.  That '91 team is still a favorite of mine with 7 wins in Bill's third year.

Bill spent the entire time talking into a dictation recorder and diagramming plays on napkins and Sharon just stared into space.

Seriously they seemed fairly talkative.

Love these throwback videos more than I do the rankings. Good to hear Greg Sharps melodic voice. Todd Weiner was a great five heart try hard story. Came to Kstate as an undersized tight end and converted to offensive tackle with a long career in the NFL. Anyone know why his son portaled out last year. I was hoping he could follow the same trajectory. Also, he has another son that is a pretty good quarterback if I remember correctly.

Got Dang these ‘97 ‘98 defenses were fun to watch. Some of the greatest defensive plays in my memory were made by Jeff Kelly, including the KU quarterback Wagner sandwich. Anyone remember the recruiting battle between Brent Venables and John Blake to land Jeff Kelly out of Garden City Juco? Jeff Kelly had committed to K State, but John Blake had Jeff Kelly sequestered in Norman and Brent Venables and Mo Latimer went down to Norman & Moe Latimer pretended to be John Blake to sneak in to see him and bring him back to Manhattan. Legend or fact?

You could do a supercut of Kevin and Tyler making some of the exact same catches.

Kevin made far
More acrobatic catches than any other KSU receiver. Tyler’s great skill was getting open thru about as precise route running as I’ve ever seen. He’s seriously in Jerry Rice territory in that regard.

Jeff Kelly, Kendall McIntosh, and Darren Howard on the same defense. Goodness, if LHC Bill Snyder was a 3% better game manager he might have had more than 1 national championship.

I can't recall all 11 regular starters for certain, but on that 1998 defense, nearly all of them played in the NFL at some point.

Safeties: Cooper & Chapman (with McGraw as a sub)
CBs: Butler & Carter
LBs: Kelly, Simoneau, Ochs (Leber was a sub)
DL: Howard, Clements, McIntosh, Rowe (Beisel was a sub)

That behind his back catch against Baylor was unbelievable. Would Jordy have been Jordy without Josh Freeman? Probably belongs in the Ron Prince appreciation thread, but Snyder gets credit for converting him to wide receiver.

In the last 20 years, there are probably fewer than 10 QBs at any level who could make that through at the end of the video against Ohio... rolling to his left, off balance and throws a dart 60 yards down the field.

I was just a young lad sitting in the SEZ with my parents and I had the perfect vantage point to see Darnell standing there wide open and I almost crapped my pants bc I didn’t think Bishop saw him and I will never forget I was so laser focused on that moment it was like Darnell was the only person in my field of vision when he caught that pass

HugeCat is my new favorite poster. My freshman year was 05 and after every loss my buddies and I would go back to our room and BLAST this video to make us feel better.

Back in 2003 the Friday before the big12 championship game I pulled up in my 1989 Toyota Minivan all by myself next to a car decked out in OU gear at 95th and Metcalf at a red light. I got out of my sweet sweet minivan, did the whole K-S-U Wildcats cheer/chant in front of them then got back in and continued on with my night.

Watching this video for the first time in 10+ years brought it all back.

Tennesee was a fine team. But... K-State was better in virtually every respect. Tennesee was a run-heavy offense with two good RBs (Travis Henry and Travis Stephens) and a decent, but not great QB in Tee Martin. That run-heavy game played into K-State's defensive strength - very stout against the run. On the other side, K-State would have been - probably by a fair margin - the most dynamic offense (and probably the most efficient as well) Tennesee had seen that year.

The K-State fan sentiment is probably amplified by the Cats absolutely mauling Tennesee two years later in the Cotton Bowl (even though they were obviously two completely different teams).

Was somebody asking about the Frank Murphy catch the other day on this bbs?

Curry's grab is my favorite.

Good for Bill. That bread looks awesome. Makes me want to make a PB&J sandwich with big globs of grape jelly.

I can't imagine how excited he'd be to tour the Taco Bell tortilla factory - surely someone can make that happen

They really glossed over alot of his accomplishments in the quick bio paragraph

Snyder retired as head coach of the K-State Wildcats following the 2018 season, after a career leading the team beginning in 1989. In addition to compiling a 215-117 record as head coach, he led the Wildcats to victories in nine Bowl games.

Still a banger and I watch it the night before every home opener every year as tradition.

Also a way to show others just how bad KSU was and it's not a long watch.

It was something they were both contractually obligated to do and Bill made it as agonizing as possible. I did always get a kick out of  the episode they would do for the seniors.

On The Game a couple years Wyatt said Bill typically wanted to do them the same day of the game which meant, for away games, sometimes they'd couldn't start filming until 3AM.

After Saturday games, everyone was allowed to go home. Bill and Sean stayed all night after the tv show. Bill making up for never seeing him for most of his childhood. Great coach, not a great dad when they were younger, making up for it now. The tv show was must see viewing. Way back when I was a kid they had the KSU and KU coaches shows back to back on Channel 13.

The other interesting part is that, in the old days (not sure about Snyder 2.0), Bill would have the equivalent of fireside chats with a small group of reporters on Sunday mornings at 9 a.m. in Vanier. And, it was pretty obvious to all that on many (if not all) occasions, the man hadn't slept a wink all night.
