Unfortunately this has been an accurate description of our D for many years. We just cannot do it right.

There needs to be a rule about giving yourself up even without calling for a fair catch, kneeling, etc (if there isn’t already, I thought there was).

I remember several years ago when TTU tried a fake kneel down play and the refs blew it dead. I think this should fall in the same category. You don’t want punt coverage to full speed run a dude over because they didn’t hear a whistle when the dude is just standing there.

If I was officiating a future North Texas game, I wouldn't penalize anything but the most egregious unnecessary roughness on punt returns. If a team uses protection rules to fool the defense, they should lose the benefit of the doubt on those calls.

If you are serious about protecting players, you cannot put yourself in a situation where you basically encourage a guy to get demolished because he was trying to be sneaky.
