Title: Having trouble with your golf game?
Post by: gatoveintisiete on July 27, 2018, 09:16:20 PM
Golf is fun but frustrating and hard, I’ve been through it all, tell me what’s troubling you and I’ll try to give you a no non sense quick fix.

I used to golf a lot and was really good and now never do. But when I do I’m still kinda good. Like riding a bike?

How far should I hit my 52 degree wedge at 1/2 , 3/4, full swing respectively?  I am 6’1 180 pounds with probably a slightly above average swing speed.

My 52 is my money club. 120 out, just outside the fringe, doesn't matter. Dynamite

I stuck a 52 with a full swing from about 110 to about 4 feet at Berkshire in Topeka last weekend and can’t remember feeling more satisfied with a swing in my life.   I recently started playing with a 60 degree and that thing when used properly is almost like cheat mode.

I have superior human club speed and it results in a 75 yard slice that still ends up going 275+ yards.  What can I do that will retain my club speed but also gain in my drive distance?

Nice shot ww,  distance control with wedges, knowing how far you hit your clubs and specifically how far your shots carry in the air are important pieces of info.  You can find this info out by hitting on a track man.  Once you know your numbers and how to adjust for wind and slope shots like that one will become more frequent.

You have to square the club earlier.  If the ball is at 12:00 and your feet connect 9:00 and 3:00, when your hands are over your right thigh in the downswing the shaft should point to about 1:30 or 2:00 with the clubface square to the arc (not the target line).  Try this and let me know what happens, if you get this right I anticipate 310 with no wind.

Bonus- think of it this way your body is rotating in the golf swing and so is your clubface, if your body rotates faster than your clubface you get a slice, if the clubface rotates faster than your body you get a hook, if they are matched you get a shot that flies straight  to your swing path

this swing will completely get rid of the slice. i did it for a while and hit amazing immediately. id just open my stance, put the ball off my right foot, swing back and through inside keeping my arms in tight, and that was it (probably slightly different than what he teaches now). it'll look like you're not even trying. way simpler than a normal swing.

bit drawy though so i switched to a hybrid of that and a normal swing. got a skytrak recently and am trying to get really good and hit it dead straight. but if you play once in a while and want to make golf more easy and enjoyable, it's a great swing to use.

Flare your left toes 45 degrees open, at the top of your backswing start down by moving your left knee around to your stance line like ol’ Sammy Snead

I'm gonna need you to find me a youtube video on this one. I'm 6'4", 215 and can only drive it about 215-220ish. My fairway 3 wood almost goes as far as some of my drives.  :curse: Irons have been $ this summer tho.

I believe you have a launch condition problem, caused by a swing path problem, you are either too in to out and hitting duck hooks or too steep and out to in hitting high week slices.  Based on what you said about hitting your irons well I think you are steep with out to in path is that right?

I’m pretty sure I’m right so try this Wacky.  You played a little baseball I think,  think about what you have to do to pull a low and away fastball up the middle, tee one up with that feel and see what happens.  A young strong athletic guy your size should crush and you will once we get this figured out.

In baseball you would come to impact hands in front of barrel and pound it into right center, in golf you have to let the club head square earlier so that hands and club head are more even at impact especially with the Driver

Great, now when you try it you may hit high straight ball left of target (pulls). These would be a result of squaring your clubface to this out to in path, if this happens try to adjust your club head swing path to be in to in.

In other words club head approach impact on a slightly inside the target line arc, and exiting impact on a slightly inside the target line arc.

By the way Wacky I don’t know how much time you have for golf, but I think it would be hilarious to coach up a 100 shooter to break 80 with nothing but gE posts.

Man, I try, but I always would rather play than practice when I have the time. I play consistent bogey golf and get my pars every 3/4 holes. Just love playing with my dad and my cuz when I have the time.

My irons do make up for my lack of length for my drives. I hit my 3 Iron straight every time, 190-200ish. It’s how I stay consistent.
Title: Re: Having trouble with your golf game?
Post by: gatoveintisiete on August 01, 2018, 08:32:43 PM
Interesting fact that will help you understand this crooked driver straight iron thing, research the D plane,
Readers digest is that Irons are hit with a decending  blow while Drivers are hit with a level to ascending blow.  To hit the iron straight requires that the club head exit impact slightly to the inside but if you do the same with a driver you get a fade or slice because the angle of attack is different, driver needs to exit impact more toward the target, hence the saying let the big dog eat.

your driver sounds dead, snap your wrists like a baseball swing on contact and you should be 275-300 easy. also open your club face a bit so you can put some draw on it. ball travels father that way

i tried switching to a very strong grip since i've been getting wrist pain, and suddenly became impossible to hit anything past a baby draw. sounds counter-intuitive though. i can be a bit of a hooker and thought i was going to hook it even more. any idea what's going on here gato/kslim?

Club fitting for tall guys comes down to arm length, you would have to have really short arms for that to be the problem.

I've been pulling everything.  Driver, irons, wedges.  Sometimes I pull hook.  I know that means I'm squaring the club face on an outside to inside path I just don't know how to fix it.  Tell me how to fix it.  And I don't want to do drills to fix it I just want to stand differently or something easy like that.

When you address the ball draw an imaginary target line that bisects the golf ball,  pick out a spot on the ball inside that line to make contact with.  Keep adjusting that spot further inside until you stop pulling or start  block slicing lol.

have a really good tip. if you guys have a shaky backswing, hover the golf club at address for everything. irons, chipping, putting, everything. just hover it, and wait until your weak shaky hands stop moving, and then start your takeaway. smooths the backswing out like butter.

Gatobrags (multiple brags in one big brag) Last Sunday I’m playing the 2nd hardest hole at my country club  :gocho: it plays 432 yards from the back tees   :gocho:  slight dog leg to the left with water and tall trees guarding the left side and out of bounds to the right.  The wind was quartering behind me left to right at about 10 mph.  I lined up my driver about 10 yards left of the fairway over an enormously tall tree 260 yards away hoping the wind would push the ball back toward the fairway.  I hit the ball right on line but it stayed straight and initially thought I was boned in the trees a little bit too far left but when I get down there it’s about 10 yards left of the fairway in the thick rough but it was a bomb.  I ask one of my buddies to borrow his range finder (because in a drunken stupor I left mine in a cart at a scramble the week before).  The bushnell says I have 82 yards to the flag that is over a creek and tucked 5 paces behind a deep bunker.  I grab my 60 degree wedge line it up about 5 feet left of the flag to account for the wind and put a silky little 80% swing on it.  The ball comes out nicely and looks like it going to be pretty close but I couldn’t really tell if long or short because you can’t see the green over the bunker.  We get up there and there are 4 balls on the green but none are very close so I go look at a few possibilities but nope not my ball and you know what that means fellas only one place left to look  :gocho: I calmly plucked my ball out of the hole and casually mentioned to the guy next to me that it went in,  we finished the hole and outside of one guy that fist bumped me on the next tee box that was it.

I usually hit 3 iron, 7/8 iron (depending on wind & pin sitch) on that hole (blues). I think it's more than a 'slight' dog leg left.

yeah play it the same from the blues, usually a hybrid to get it a little further down there.  3 wood is a better play from the blacks if I was giving a crap that day.

I meant to say it 'feels' more than a slight dog leg left. Elevated green that's undulated making birdie (let alone eagle) tough. I always play my second shot a club long.

how do you play #2, I quit going over, I hit something short of the creek, knock an iron short of left bunker and then try to wedge it close.  #17 is tough a lot of guys play to the middle every time but it’s always a tough 2 putt. (There’s a lot of talk about an extra club on that one too)

I also quit trying to carry the creek. I'm usually in the trees on the left or right the entire length of the hole.

17 is def a plus one club.

I learned to play golf on a par 3 course and never learned how to hit a driver, usually tee off with an iron. I recently acquired a driver and am absolutely awful at hitting the ball.

I've been practicing with wiffle balls in my backyard and can crush everything but when I try to hit real balls on the course nothing works.

Please help me learn how to hit a driver.

if taking an actual lesson isn't your thing, find some video on youtube or something where Tom Watson or someone shows you the basics.  if that's not your thing either, play the ball forward in your stance and swing easy.

what kind of shots are you hitting?

whenever i practice irons a ton and hit driver i tend to rush it. agree with mm and swing easy, on the backswing at least.

The ball should be in your stance farther up, ideally just inside your left foot provided you are a right handed player.  With irons your swing path is steeper, with a driver you want to sweep it off the tee.  The driver itself might be an issue as well, would probably recommend a club head with 10.5 degrees of loft and a regular flex graphite shaft.

Finally getting some success with my driver so I'm hoping everyone can help me out with another issue in my golf game.

Usually my Iron game is on point but at least once a round I have a complete meltdown for like 2 holes where I cant hit an iron to save my life. I hit too far under it, take a giant chunk of ground out and the ball goes about 20 yards to the right at a 45 to 30 degree angle. I usually overcompensate by moving my right thumb back to make me hook the ball until I stop melting down.

Is this all Mental?

I suggest abandoning the worthless game of golf entirely.   Throw your full weight into fishing.   On the weekend of majors spend the morning fishing and then take a break with some cold adult beverages and watch someone else play golf.    Your life will be much more enjoyable.

i think you just need more practice really. hitting tons of balls isn't the best for hitting the ball straighter, but it'll surely improve you hand-eye and you'll hit the ball solidly.

hard to say what's wrong though, need to look at the swing

If any kc EMAWS are looking to play golf with anyone let me know. My bros are only good for every other weekish and im trying to play twice a week.

Just played a solo round at teetering rock for $21 with cart and shot a 85(only 1 par 5, 21 over par)

My goal is to consistently shoot under 100 by the end of summer.

Anyone have any recommendations for free golf apps? I recently downloaded 18 Birdies and its pretty good, just wondering if there is something better out there I am missing.

I mainly use it for the GPS showing distance to the green and to determine my handicap, also use the "shot tracking" feature to measure how far I can hit each club.

Played 9 holes on tuesday night at Heart of America with a buddy then played a solo 18 sesh at Minor Park last night....Got a legit birdie on a par 4!!! Just crushed the drive 176 yards then used my PW to put the ball about 5 ft away from the hole. Gawd that was a great feeling.

i use the app SwingU, i don't track scores or handicap, but it's good for using as a gps.

i've been getting online coaching the last few weeks, and it's helped so much. it's nice to have a structure to a swing, i never really had a swing teacher before. but its so helpful to know what's wrong instead of watching my swing on video and trying to make guesses. would recommend.

I took lessons a many years ago. Huge help. The day it really clicked was when he put me on the swing trainer. Forced me to feel what a good swing path with one piece takeaway should be. Highly recommend it.

i think people get turned off when teachers talk about angles or anything else technical, but really that's just to find a problem, the solution is usually simple and feel-based, or fixable through drills.

there's affordable ways to get coached too, i pay $90 and will get around 5 swing reviews done, i think it's a good deal.

He got the average condition, as did I, and said they were completely fine. The only wear was you could see where the previous guy hit the ball with his irons because he hit it in the same spot every damn time.

Guyz, I played the 9 hole Heart of America course yesterday after work and shot a 42! 5 pars! What?!?

I play this course all the time after work and my previous best score was 47, usually I shoot between 50-54.

At this pace I should be on the tour by 2021  :gocho:

Nice sticks, Wacky.

God I love golf. If I'm hitting the fairway, I've put up some good rounds this year. I need to hit them more, or get a lot better at scrambling, but have had a lot of fun this year getting more birdies than ever.

Playing at a 9 handi in 2019.

I had to google what this was and I think early extension is the reason why on one whole every round I cant hit the ball with my Iron, will just go 20 feet to my right at a 45 degree angle. Watched a quick video on how to fix it.

Went to cabo with the lady and played 18 today at puerto los cabos which was next to the resort. Shot a 46 on the front (2 pars) then got hammered, ended up with a 100 overall.

The course had alot more elevation changes than i was used to and I missed about 4 short putts....My highest score was an 8 on a par 3...left of the green, then bunker, beach, bunker again...woof.

Great views tho (https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190804/13cd5e6269f38572e32d02182a218bd8.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190804/d9ce831b47b7c44b682557978358c99a.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190804/ccf8f7e0e736989c3921a682796e047f.jpg)

Played another 18 today, course is amazing and they had a station you would hit twice every 9 holes to get food/drinks.

Not just hot dogs and beer, i had red snapper and pork tacos today and crushed alot of mixed drinks.

It was the "off season" and hot as balls when the sun was shining but for $120 I would consider it a good deal (for reference i typically dont spend over $50 per round in KC)

last 2.5 years i went on this mission to get as good at golf as possible. i basically didn't play, just grinded my swing in front of cameras for hours on end, many swing reviews online, lots of money and time spent on this endeavor, many frustrating times wondering wtf i was thinking but finally i can confidently say my swing is now elite and looks pro as eff, very little clubface rotation. still many steps to go, but it's probably the biggest step. might be the toughest thing i've tried to work toward and stuck through and feeling really happy about it right now. proud to say i have the best swing on goEMAW, possibly the world. suck a dick @gatoveintisiete.

also i started microdosing shrooms like 2 weeks ago for the purpose of increasing neuroplasticity. maybe it worked  :dunno:

That sounds terrible. The real question is after all of that work are you any better at the actual game of golf or do you just look better doing it?

I too am on a mission to get as good at golf as possible so I just play a bunch and have started working on my putting/chipping for 30 minutes before I tee off. Seems alot more enjoyable than grinding in front of a camera.

about 10 years ago i was in a similar posish...got myself a bunch of lessons at GOLFTECH and would watch the film and analyze all my angles and do all the recommended drills to fix this, that and the other thing, etc. etc. Anyway, after like a year of that I still wasn't really getting any better. Then one day i was at the driving range, frustrated with my lack of progress, and noticed that the driving range pro offered lessons. Dude was this fat good ol' boy who probably drank 1/5 of Jack just to get out of bed in the morning. Anyway after 2 lessons with him my swing and my game were like a million percent better.

IDK if that's because at GOLFTECH you're hitting into a net and relying on the technology to tell you how far you would have hit your ball. off of an astroturf pad. And then there's being at the driving range and actually seeing where the ball goes for real, and maybe those 2 things don't always match.

It was kinda funny b/c part of the package i bought with GOLFTECH included a playing lesson where you go play a round with your instructor. By the time we got it scheduled I had already taken a few lessons from the driving range pro, so it was just kinda funny, hearing my GOLFTECH pro trying to give me some pointers when we're out playing and the whole time i'm thinking to myself "you get no credit for any of this"

for some people the joy of the game is to see themselves get better at it. And if you have a crap swing and aren't just a natural at diagnosing whats wrong with your swing then going the analytical route is an option.

You said you spent a year doing it and didn’t get any better. That’s not exactly a ringing endorsement.  For like 99% of golfers the short game is where the reduction of strokes will come anyway.  I mean ultimately it’s your time and money so knock yourself out but if the goal is to be a solid player (10- 19 handicap) it just seems completely unnecessary.

what i have noticed is that there really isn't very much great golf instructors out there. they could probably teach most people to break 90, but they're more of teaching band-aid solutions than building an optimal golf swing. even guys who have big followings i really don't agree with what they say, some things they say are optional but really i feel are non-negotiable. they'll teach "shallowing the club" but the clubface will still be wide open before impact and require a flip. flip = inconsistency.

i really recommend gankas's stock swing model. their website is a sick deal, $50/month and they'll review your swing up to 10x/month. but you have to trust them completely, i was resistant first and that just made things take longer. every single move is geared toward getting the clubface to rotate as little as possible and turn the swing into a body swing. basically get a strong grip and get the face closed early and make sure it stays super closed. then to square up the face your body and upper arms naturally reacts to the closed face and you're forced to rotate your body a lot. but most coaches don't really focus enough on the grip. the grip is EVERYTHING, my swing falls apart if i have even a neutral grip.

X post with brag about being a stud thread, but today I was feeling saucy and bought myself a set of PXG irons. Will report back in 7-10 business days when they arrive to confirm how much of a hot POA they are (or POS but I hope not!)

My rational brain was all “you’re hitting off a mat and those sensors that calculate the flight path aren’t that accurate”

But my irrational brain was like “what’s that? I just hit that 7 iron 190 yds on the fly and only 7 yds off dead center? Tell me more, mister sales man. Flattery will get you everywhere”

I just hit 30 shots in a row within 10 yards left or 10 yards right. Only stopping because it’s 3 am where I am. My goal is 100 in a row, but 5 yards left and right.

I have a very old/mismatched set of clubs and a cheap PING bag. No head covers on anything. At one time I could shoot around 90 consistently but not now. I like having a gross set of clubs so that when I go up to the tee and people watch me duck hook my tee shot into the trees they're like 'yeah that makes sense, look at his clubs.' No false advertising here.

At this point, it's just a name. A new set irons from companies like Srixon or even Wilson are really damn good clubs, and infinitely better than old Titleist irons.

Hitting different irons at a place like a PGA Superstore is fun. One day I'll upgrade.

I called PXG and they said they would give me the full bag discount if I bought the other 4 clubs. So going to a fitting on Friday and if they feel good imma yolo that crap. Completely unnecessary. My woods are Taylor Made Burners circa 2013 and they work just fine

I'm on this train. All of my clubs are hand-my downs from my friends + a putter my dad had. I did break down and buy a $50 4 hybrid from amazon this spring and am learning how to hit it....

There is nothing better than beating your friends with their hand-my down clubs while they are playing with a $1000+ bag.

Honestly the only club I might consider buying is a new putter.

really only so much you can do with metal. even some new revolutionary material like the stealth isn't a huge difference over other drivers. titleist t100 irons are interesting because of how they moved the weight around inside to make it very forgiving while still looking and feeling like a blade. so imo they are the best and are the irons i use but the benefit won't be that much over other player cavity irons.

if there's one thing i think players should do it's cut down their driver an inch or 2 (which will make the club feel lighter) and then add weight back to the head. the heavier head will make the ball go a lot straighter since it'll be more stable - in slow motion a driver twists a lot at impact. and then it's easier to hit the sweetspot more. will lose 15 yards on good hits max, but might gain distance overall just because of hitting solid shots more often

Regardless which brand of clubs you hit, getting fitted for them makes the biggest difference.

Recently upgraded my irons and got fitted for TM P790s, contact was immediately better and more consistent.  Shaft length went up an inch over stock irons.

I think you should evaluate what you want out of golf and then go from there.  You need some basic instruction on how to get a decent  swing that is repeatable.  If you are playing with a group of guys on a regular basis and you just want to be competitive with them, be maniacal about learning the short game. If you can be highly effective from 50 yards and in you will be better than most people you play against.

Title: Re: Having trouble with your golf game?

This is good advice from WW. Probably ~75% of your strokes will take place within 50 yds of the flag. A good short game will give you like a 5-10 stroke advantage vs someone with a lousy short game.

Also if you’re looking to just go all in on a hobby, golf isn’t a bad choice! It’s kind of amazing how motivating it is if you crush a drive straight down the middle of the fairway or get a birdie. Like last time I played I played like white hot dogshit but I got 2 birdies, one of which was a 155 yd par 3 that I stuck it within 4 feet of the hole. And yeah I play 16 really bad holes but those 2 had me like oh yeaaaahhhhhh

I have a question: what is the more satisfying way of getting a birdie, if you get it through improbable means like chipping in/draining a 40’ putt/on a par3 hitting your tee shot within a few feet of the hole…or is it more satisfying to get it like how the pros do, solid drive, solid approach, drain a 10-15 footer?

My 3W is like the only long club I'm good at. I hit it off a tee or off the deck, doesn't matter. Use it instead of driver most times. My driving game sucks. I should probably get fitted for a driver. Maybe that's it.

Eagle 3 is the best feeling. On in 2 and sink that 15' put.

Makes it even better when the guy you're gambling with and beating soundly wants double or nothing at the 18th tee box.

I thoroughly enjoyed my driver fitting on Friday, guy threw a lot of interesting data at me with the different heads and shafts and shaft lengths. Or at least I thought it was interesting and then I looked up the trackman data for the pga tour pros and  that was humbling.

But in terms of club speed and ball speed…I think I would be upper middle class (on the senior tour)

In a stroke play/best ball event with money on the line: The first one.
In a practice/fun round: The second one.

So now I need to go spend some time on the practice green bc i played those 7 holes at +1, but let me tell you lads it was a lot of fun stringing together so many GsIR (greens in regulation)

You striking it will enough now to regularly shot shape and put some back spin on the short irons?  At my peak I could hit it straight, fade, draw on command but I never have had good enough skills to get the ball to spin back.

Can’t fade it with any consistency. My natural ball flight is a little bit of a draw (the new clubs have straightened it out a bit) and I can hit shots with more draw. I don’t know that I necessarily spin it back, but my ball is usually within 5 ft of my ballmark so it stays put.
