this referee is lol

gonna need the senegal coach fist pump gif
-
No audio so I don't really know, but it looked liked they never really let the player back in and he just took off on the breakaway and the refs let it go.
I'm all for a scrappy underdog though so go Senegal.

yeah and then ref let poland kick their free kick (that ended up being a goal) before senegal was ready. it was pretty garbage ref'ing all around

That Messi guy is extremely overrated.

Cho Hyun-woo, though, leapt to his right to claw the ball away. The Daegu FC keeper came into the tournament as third choice before being surprisingly selected for the opening game because he is the tallest of the three keepers and the coach, Shin Tae-yong, was obsessed by Sweden’s height. Cho then gained a cult status in South Korea, where his extravagant ginger bouffant has earned him the nickname “Dae-hair”, taking the Korean word for “great” to create a pun on De Gea.
Absolute class from the Koreans here. They really deserved more just for this alone.
-
I don't know many of the players, and I won't really follow them outside of the World Cup, but the World Cup itself is my favorite sporting event on earth. I love it! It's way better than the Olympics, in terms of inspiring nations' patriotism (not necessarily a good thing, but interesting to watch), and it's definitely better than the NCAA tournament in terms of drama and high passions from the players and fans alike.
Such fantastic entertainment.
-
yes definitely nothing even close to it, I anticipate it will become even better with an expanded field.
-
:sdeek:
-
Ronaldo better step it up or he’s going home early.
-
GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAALLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL!

bad deal for fox...no US and now CR and Messi gone early...wonder how many casual viewers lost

Russia obviously is gonna win this now.

The Russian team is ugliest group of athletes I’ve seen outside of Lawrence

Wow.
-
I hated the way Spain played but penalty shootouts suck. And looks like we're gonna have more. :frown:
-
Glad the better team won game 2 today
-
penalties are the best drama in all of sports. what are you all talking about?
-
They are a disgusting way to end a match, it’s not even a debate.

love penalty kicks, a true treat

Hey I didn't say it was a good alternative!
-
I personally think that removing the goalies after the thirty minutes of OT and playing 10v10 would be way more interesting than a PK and closer to actual soccer. Say do it for 10 minutes without goalies or golden goal
Note I haven't thought much about this, I just think PKs are dumb.
-
The way it is now is very similar to college fb ot (which is bitb)
-

it is currently way worse than college FB OT (which sucks pretty hard). the 25 yard line is way too close and negates elite KSU special teams.
-
I’ll be damned, apparently it is up for debate.
-
10 minutes without goalies would be SO much fun! I would love that.
-
Yea would be amaze
-
Weird

It's not similar at all.

soccer with no goalies is some of the dumbest crap I've seen posted on here.
-

same. also a full length of the field kick contest with no goalies. can pros put it in the net from there 100% of the time? can they all kick it that far? martin gramatica would be the best at it.

each team gets a chance to score from an artificially close/easy position that scarcely resembles the rest of the game. :dunno:

is switzerland the only country that regularly gets abbreviated to its non-English form (SUI) for English-speaking TV? weird

O'Hare is ORD and there's no rough ridin' D in sight. Think about that.
-
Spain (ESP)
-
Spain (ESP)
is their any rhyme or reason to this? may have to move this to the pet peeve thread
-
Also pretty sure Iceland they use ISL
-
yeah there are more now that i think about it. who is in charge of this mess?
they use NED for netherlands
why not DEU instead of GER?
why not SVE in this match?
why not DAN instead of DEN?
-
I'm not sure, but the vast majority of the countries even in the native tongue (if they are even changed at all) don't change. Best guess is if the country's name is vastly different than the anglicized version of of it/it isn't in some different alphabet then they go with that (Spain being the one that always comes to mind). That and maybe to avoid confusion with another country, but honestly that would be low.
Doesn't bother me though.
-
soccer with no goalies is some of the dumbest crap I've seen posted on here.
what makes it dumb?
Penalty shootouts are dumb because:
-removes 10 players
-ignores things like injuries, fatigue, red cards, etc.
-they make like 70% of them
-it's basically a coinflip of who wins
-the first 120 minutes are completely irrelevant
I always see pickup games w/o goalies, never seen a pickup pk shootout
-
Are the fake injuries this world cup at an all time high of awfulness?
-

that Neymar dood was hilarious yesterday

I think to become a professional soccer player, you have to lack the ability to have any type of pride in yourself.
-
is switzerland the only country that regularly gets abbreviated to its non-English form (SUI) for English-speaking TV? weird
If you think that's weird, consider that in Switzerland the usual abbrev is CH, presumably from their German name, Schweiz. Where did the S go? :dunno:

CH stands for Confoederatio Helvetica, which is the Latin translation. since Switzerland has 4 official languages, Latin is used in order to be neutral
-
the swedes really defended today wow
-
I like PKs. If people watch 120 minutes of soccer they deserve an exciting conclusion with lots of goals.

damn, who should I cheer for now?
brazil - seems like they always win so like cheering for golden state, maybe this would be good
belgium - no
uruguay - seems like a good one, small country. should suck. but they don't.
sweden - no
england - no
france - no
russia - MAGA! no
croatia - they have a uruguay feel but not as good of one. so no.
colombia - see uruguay above
my new teams in order: uruguay, colombia, croatia, brazil
-
should have a 2 point line. it's like the three point line but only worth two since a one pointer in soccer is worth two in basketball.
-
I am all in on Brazil. This will finally be the year, guys.
-
Uruguay is also incredibly adorable.
-

wtf is this? their most famous player has bitten like 4 people during games

the colombian fans have been the best but i think they just lost their best player :frown:
sweden is great. they weren't even supposed to qualify and now they're in the quarterfinal, why are they an automatic no in the sd system?
-

I'm not as opposed to it as some people, but I think it would result in shitty soccer with players just kicking it from deep and praying.
My alternative would be even more CFB-like with 3v3 in the penalty area. Defense starts in the 8 yard and offense starts outside the area with the ball at the top. When the ball leaves the area the possession is over. They take turns. Maybe a best of 3 then a sudden death. Same 3 for both offense and defense.

Belgium has the best beer in the world, so it's really an easy answer.
-
england
-
do they have an overtime period or do they go straight to PKs? Hopefully straight to PKs

That was exciting!

england didn't england for once :sdeek:

Do they put their best PK kicker last? Because Colombia's last guy got mushed.
-
but the PKs at least were fun AF
can you imagine having a stick so far up your butt that you don't enjoy those? wow
-
I’m never going back to Columbia if I’m one of the guys that missed a penalty.
-
Colombia would have destroyed those scuzzy gross England thugs/floppers in a goalie-less overtime
-
Colombia collecting 6 yellows in about 10 mins was p impressive
-
Been on #teamBrasil and #teamFrance since the beginning. I see no reason to stop that (other than the fact Neymar's flopping annoys the crap outta me)
-
My guys are gonna do this!

Just some good footy but will probably find myself rooting for England, Belgium, France and any underdog. Can't wait, CF3!
 :excited:

goddamn, france. stop being so rough ridin' defensive. you could use a lot of clock attacking.
-
i don't know crap about soccer. but france looked way better than these dudes (either of them).

you know more than you give yourself credit for
-
instead of a 30 minute overtime and then penalty kicks they should do two 15 minute overtimes and then sudden death, but with no goalkeepers allowed.
-
After 30 you get to use your hands.
-
After 30 you get to use your hands.
maybe to touch (dribble?) but I don't think they should be allowed to carry the ball.

If the game ends in regulation as a draw both teams lose and have to sit out the next World Cup.

Ja sam Harvatskan!!
