Title: Texas Tech. Could be the start of Oscar's nirvana!
Post by: renocat on February 05, 2018, 06:26:18 AM
First, I think we could win.  But i am dang skeptical we will.  Why?  We are tired, and I am not sure THE OSCAR demands toughness.  Texas has a human rejector guarding the rim, a 3 point Roach, and a snazzy freshman.  We have Mawien and the Keystone cops, poor 3 point shooting, and no freshmen.

Gene Taylor said he wants us to win conference titles.  We are fighting for the sixth at best.  We have to sweep Texas, and beat OSU, ISU and TCU.   Winning this game puts is essential if this is going to be a good year.  A loss may very well be the beginning of the end for Weber.

I watch all conference games.  Texas is getting better every game.  Outplayed TT in Lubbock and should have won.  If they beat us they may end up competing with TT and KU for 1st by the end of the conference race.  Last few games, they have been making easy threes and tough threes.  Hope they break that habit when they play us.

Brown Roach matchup is the key.  Mombo in the middle will be a challenge for Brown.  IMO he and Diarra has to foul this guy out.  Can't let Roach go beserk.

Texas isn't very good. Every team in this conference has looked like they were improving until they didn't.

I don't think KState could have beaten a single conf opponent the way it played the last 3 games. Right before that couldn't lose to a team in this conf.

Need RSVPs for this game's chat.  It's on longhorn network, so I'd either have to do some extra stuff to use XT or somebody's login to be able to watch at home on a less than stellar stream but still be able to chat solidly, or go to the bar and not be able to chat well or probably at all.

It's criminal that the big 12 is allowing such an important game for wednesday slotting to take place on lhn.

Yes.
You, like the rest of us, became aware of that streak during the Wooly years. We've had nothing close to as bad as Wooly and Asbury. It's very difficult for a P5 school to have a losing home record because if the team is mediocre to horrible their non con would be filled with sub 200 RPIs, meaning you'd only need one or two home conference wins. I'd guess Mizzou went sub .500 one of the Kim Anderson years but other than that I can't think of another one recently.

That's fair. Basketball discussion used to be the best of any K-State venue here, but not enough people care anymore. There are other venues where a few more people are willing to discuss the games and the team without every thread devolving into another oscar sucks discussion. I've heard enough oscar sucks stuff, I just still enjoy talking about this team, even with the ups and downs.

Fan, from your experience is fatigue a good excuse for the steep drop off on shooting percentage? I knew we weren't going to be able to shoot lights out forever, but I always thought we would fall to a more average number that still kept us in games. Dropping to stupid low numbers boggles the mind a little. We are taking less shots near the basket, so I am guessing that when you take jump shots instead of layups your shooting percentage would drop. . .but this much?

We got hammered at home in a game a lot of us thought we should at least compete - coming off an excellent run of play, no less. The environment was certainly set. Then we lost as bad as we've lost in 20 years to a team coming off losing 5 of 6. I think many of us would prefer to focus on the games, but when your coach is losing by 38 in year 6 and doesn't have a single competent 5 and only the semblance of a competent bench, where should our focus be?

I think its just the nature of shooting and relying on it as your offensive strength. You would hope to avoid dramatic drop offs like we saw last week, but I think its reality, plus we have been without Kam, who is one of our 3 best shooters with Dean and Sneed. We will go on another run where we shoot 50% on 2s and 40% on 3s, hopefully starting tomorrow. Plus, we've struggled inside against WVU inside the paint the last several years outside of the upset last year. A good sign is that we shot it really well in Austin last year, but we'll see if there is any correlation this year.

It's always risky to rely on outside shooting.  As infuriating as a 38 point loss is it's not overly surprising.  A reliance on 3's will also allow you to win games you shouldn't when shots are falling.  All that said, eff oscar...sorry Fan :(

Not making 2s was much more problematic than 3s against WVU. But the biggest issue was one of the worst defensive performances in the last 30 years.

No, it isn't fatigue. It's a combination of regressing to the mean and the last three teams we've faced are good defensively. For 99.98% of college teams who rely on jump shooting, it's going to come and go.

First 4:00 wasn't pretty.  They made 6-7 FGs, had 14-7 lead

Rest of the way, in 56 Possessions they had 50 pts (15 TOs, 25% 3pt, 48% 2pt)

We got points on 9 of final 12 Possessions.  Glad Barry missing the front end of 1-and-1 didn't prove costly.  Diarra & Sneed with some big hoops. Barry dishing the rock.  Tip my hat to Love who actually gave us some decent minutes from a "Big off the bench"

I was all over oscar after driving over to Morgantown and witnessing the ass-kicking Saturday, so I’ll give credit where it’s due. Big win, glad to see us stop the bleeding. Still not sold on oscar’s ability to get the most out of this team, but I’d be happy to eat my words.

Beating Tech on Saturday would make it a solid 4 game stretch and would do wonders for our resume. It would also do wonders for KU’s Big 12 title streak but wgaf, as long as we finish strong.

It was nice to see our shooting come back.
Going 23-37 on 2pt with Bamba patrolling the middle, only getting 1 block.

I still can't for the life of me figure out how a team that plays like Texas does could only have 1 foul with 50 seconds to go in the game.

I can't believe Shaka came out of the zone in the 2nd half.  We do what we do best against a zone, became a jump shooting team.......clank, clank, clank. :Yuck:

He went man at the end and we carved it up.

They aren't a very good zone team, too big and slow, also playing zone neutralizes their greatest strength which is interior defense.

Has Stokes made a basket since coming back?

0-5, all 3s. I can't complain about any shot he's taken though and he's distributing the ball really well with an assist to TO of 7:2 in only 24 minutes.

Mawien could've had a big offensive night if he had avoided all the WTF plays.

true but we get great looks, especially for Wade around the foul line.  He looks so free and easy on those it has to drive other coaches crazy to give them up.

Shaka has his man to man defense ego like most coaches. They aren't going to play zone defense in the last 5-6 minutes of any game ever.

If he went zone he may as well put Bamba and Oteskwhatever on the bench. Again if you're dominating the paint, on both ends, you don't play zone.

I think he's got a team similar to many of his VCU teams. Its not like he dominated and won Colonial and A10 titles, though he got 2nd several times in those leagues, he just had a magical Final 4 run and a couple other decent tournaments. He's lost in the first round his last 3 trips.

I don't know why he went away from pressure defense. I think his havoc system masked a lot of his faults as a coach.

I'm guessing Smart is having a much tougher time getting guys to put in as much effort/intensity as the other dudes he recruited at VCU with a chip on their shoulder.

Off topic, but one of my shower thoughts this morning was maybe that is why Frank was so good at getting us a tournament win but it was so hard to get out of the first weekend.  The guys played hard as always but maybe just could not physically recover in time to replicate that kind of effort.

Man what would a win against the Red Raiders mean for Weber?  Are we going to have someone steal him?  I am sure Colorado State would like to have him.
