I hate February so much. January is pretty terrible, and then February is just even more the the same crap.
EDIT: I CHANGED MY VOTE TO JANUARY.
-
January and February both suck, but Jan is 2-3 days more of suctitude so it wins.
-
feb '17 was amaze af
-
January. February is short and it's warming up.....January has no redeeming qualities.

february sucks
by then i’m worn down from december/january and it usually seems to be really windy
also, spring is right around the corner
-
It's usually February. Sometimes it's July, though.
-
February for the reasons clams mentions. Almost always have a freezing rain/sleet storm and by the end of the month you are doubting if spring every really will come.

Rank the months in order from worst to best (worst at top, best at bottom)
Feb - grey, cold, everyone just exhausted from winter, salt all over cars, disgusting.
Jan - all of the above minus a tiny bit because we aren't all super exhausted of it yet
----- (above this line are crap tier)
Apr - Still some spring fever but kinda meh, let's get to summer
Aug - Pool still open but sometimes hot AF
Sep - Good month overall, maybe some fall fever towards the end, last days of the pool, football
July - 4th of July, summer in full swing. pool babes and cannonballs.
----- (above this line are pretty good, not great, actually sometimes great)
Nov - thanksgiving pretty decent, football, fall weather and usually no winter yet
June - best weather of the summer months (June-Aug, no idea if this is actually summer or not).
Oct - peak fall fever days. chilly mornings. football. fire pits. the works.
Dec - holiday season. tons of time with family. winter is still adorable and not the worst thing in the world.
Mar - NCAA tourney. Spring fever begins. Great month.
May - Best weather overall, pool opens, great travel month with kids still in school and after spring break. memorial day. wow, what a month.
---- (all great above this line)
-
so yeah, 2 months are the worst and 10 months are all good to great. I'm using Omaha as my weather so subtract 5 degrees from KC area.
-

Spring being around the corner is the redeeming quality to Feb. Around January 12th it feels like spring will never arrive.
Another strike against January. The average coldest day in KC is January 19th. Boooooo January

sd showing mad disrespect to my guy september itt

february sucks

All of that is why I hate February. January has the momentum of Christmas and New Year's to carry it most of the month, but by February I am full "Tired of Winter" mode and ready for spring. Also, I almost always get sick in February, it's like winter finally beats it down enough to get me sick.
At least February the days are noticeably getting longer and March is right there.
-
also
really you kind of have to group the months in 3-month pods
stud pod:
october / may / september
ok pod:
april / june / november
pud pod:
july / march / december
crap pod:
february / january / august
-
Not sure it is appropriate to inject personal feelings ("by February I'm really tired of winter") into this study. Objectively and scientifically speaking, January sucks way harder than February. February is shorter and the days are getting longer. January is one big long holiday hangover.
-
Sometimes July will have like 15-20 days of 100 degree weather. February is never as bad as that. Usually we only have a few days that are surface of the sun hot like that, though.
-
Kansas-specific, September was the worst allergy month.

Any month I can't get my guns out when it's sunny out is not a month I want to be a part of.
Getting housed at the swimming pool surrounded by bros and babes beats everything else.
-
which is better, fire pits and leaves changing color and sleeping with the windows open, or white midwestern people taking photos of the temperature in their cars?
dlew: oh man sometimes it's like 110 or something crazy! easy choice.
-
Anyone who doesn't have September in the stud pod needs to have their brain checked.

Dlew needs to move to Tucson or some other hell on earth

i'd like to jump all over this thread, but the original poster's decision to limit the discussion to kansas really limits my input.

hard to EMAW properly in Tucson.
people who whine about the heat are downgrades. everything you can do in the fall you can do in the summer. can't vice versa that truism. sorry (not).

You can't go watch Cats football on the weekends during the summer, dlew.

That's true, but i'm talking strictly weather.
If we want to add in everything else we might as well make december a stud because of the time off around the holidays.

I'm with dlew. September is pretty great though and I might trade out May for September in the pods. You lose some pool time in September but gain tailgating pud games at BSFS which makes up for it.
-
you can't force each pod to have three months when they obviously don't.
-
I mean if you have a body of water to go to then 110 is pretty nice. otherwise sign me up for a bonfire mocat!

I love the effort of this list but the upward cascading makes all of the months great for this list which I don’t think is the case.

Don’t you have the same weather year around rusty?

yes

October is the best and it isn't even close
-
October is the best and February is the worst and I will not hear another word about it.
-
I think San Fran weather would drive me nuts. It is always on the verge of being nice out but usually isn't. I'm too optimistic and would feel like I'm getting kicked in the balls every morning.

well, you're wrong. It's just hoodie weather (at worst) every day. Easy to be pleasant.
Worst part is the nights are always cold, even if it's like 75+ during the day. Most interesting is like it is impossible to rain from like April to November.
And when I said May I was obviously referring to the best month in Kansas. September/October are warmest in SF so probably the best.

i'm not sure, probably november.

the worst thirty day period is the middle of January to the middle of February.
-
Bad weather doesn't matter much in Kansas anyway, the only necessary outside time is the time between your car in the parking lot and the building you're going into
-

Yes. This period should be its own special month of suckitude. It's like purgatory.

That’s true in the winter.

all these Kansas expats taking shots at oct/nov is upsetting
-
Bad weather doesn't matter much in Kansas anyway, the only necessary outside time is the time between your car in the parking lot and the building you're going into
That's a good point..In Chicago bad weather is something most people have to actually confront and walk around in. I remember when I was staying at your old old place, I'd wake up, see it was a -17 wind chill outside, and be crushed knowing that I had to walk half a mile to the train. Chicago winters are for the birds, man. Also, the sun sets at what feels like 3:30 pm - which starts to become VERY depressing.
The bad weather in Kansas only sucks because you can't do the great things that you can do when it's hot out.
-
Do you judge the kansas month against other kansas months?
Or weigh the kansas month against how the same month would be somewhere else?

Its August by a wide margin for me.

Dlew I love your zeal but you often seem bewildered when people dislike the blazing heat of summer. Do you perhaps have poor circulation or a medical condition that makes you less sensitive to the oppressive heat of Midwestern summers?
-
Yeah, walking half a mile to the train in July is worse than in February
-
Do you judge the kansas month against other kansas months?

I went w/the latter because otherwise it just comes down to if you especially love/hate hot or cold. The latter is more WAR.
-
Yeah, walking half a mile to the train in July is worse than in February
no fuckin way. Maybe in Phoenix but not Chicago or Kansas
-
Also, as a fellow Kansan ex-pat, I enjoy the big-city Chicagoans looking down their nose at the little friends they left behind.
-
Yeah, walking half a mile to the train in July is worse than in February

This is insane
-
I mean I love all the summer stuff. Baseball and cookouts and boats and all of it. However the average daily discomfort for me on a blazing hot day makes me just plain miserable.
-
August 2013-2014-2015-2016 (rally mantis!) and even 2017 were more fun than normal because the Royals were good. August 2018 looks like a forecast of boringville heatsburg USA. Population CF3
-

It's great. Our best months are unquestionably June-Sept though... It can suck for a couple days in July/August if it hits the 90's, but generally that four month stretch is glorious
-
August really wears on my soul.

i question whether these acolytes of heat are human.
-
Yeah, walking half a mile to the train in July is worse than in February
Disagree. I'll take the heat walk anyday. Winter isn't horrible if it's just cold bit mix in wind and any precip....the worst.

Exactly what I was thinking, but was afraid to ask (HIPAA)
-
I'd rather be hot than cold. (P.S. I am always cold when other people are comfortable.)
-
Also, as a fellow Kansan ex-pat, I enjoy the big-city Chicagoans looking down their nose at the little friends they left behind.
I've lived in KC since last July fwiw.
Yeah, walking half a mile to the train in July is worse than in February
no fuckin way. Maybe in Phoenix but not Chicago or Kansas
Yeah. Not even close. Heat is uncomfortable and sucks because you get a little sweaty sometimes, but being outside in those deep windchills is just absolutely unbearable. Just brutal - almost painful. Plus, guess what, hope you don't like sunlight because it's dark outside almost all the time.
All the proof I need is that even in the dog days of summer, there are outside activities that normal people engage in: Cookouts, little league games, patio drinking, etc. In the coldest days of winter, only an insane person would have a cookout. Game, set, checkmate.
-
Yeah, walking half a mile to the train in July is worse than in February

I think it depends on whether you are dressed for work or not. I hate sweating into my work clothes.
-
it doesn't get hot enough outside to make me rather be cold. what on earth is the matter with you people?
-
"oh no, it's too hot to go outside!" imagine what you sound like if you say something like that.
meanwhile, "it's too cold to go outside!" is just a common sense survival thing.
-
I wonder what it’s like to walk a half mile to the train in antarctica. is it worse than the big city of chicago walk?
who knows...? hopefully james cook drops by to let us know
-

Every time this comes up I feel like I'm talking to a bunch of weirdo shut-ins.
Like, I understand that sometimes it gets really hot outside and can be uncomfortable. But man, that's just great swimming pool weather. Go out and get some ice cream! Maybe schedule a weekend at the lake!
When it's insanely cold outside, it's not great anything weather. Stay indoors. Cancel school.
-

Tell that to the 96 Americans the heat killed last year, steve dave.
-
Has anyone ever gotten the flu in July or August?
I bet not.
-
I don't outside leisure unless it's between 50 and 80, otherwise just not worth it
-
if it's 0 degrees outside you can always add more layers.
if it's 100 degrees outside there are only so many clothes you can take off and you will still be disgustingly hot.
-
dlew, what is the perfect walking temperature? like 65? does that happen more often in august, or october?
-
I guarantee dlew has a ski parka on at 65
-
He's doing what he does in like every thread guys, he loves hoodie weather as much as we do

so like in winter do you fools put on ski pants every day?
And like if it's 90 degress and you're glowing a bit, find some rough ridin' shade and you're just fine.
-
My family on the mens side have a really bad sweating problem. It's embarrassing showing off sweaty pits when out on the golf course and/or at a family bbq.
-

I don't own ski pants. I wear jeans and am fine.
-
And I find it weird that February is worse to some of you than January if cold is the issue. Its colder in January. Last Feb in KC there was a day where we got to 80.
-
I find the older I get though the more I appreciate the rhythm of the seasons. Its good for my soul. I wouldn't like to live in like Miami or something. Too much sameness.
-
I'd rather it be 90 degrees outside than 60.
this is now the stupidest thing anyone has ever said.

I was head nodding with you for the most part in your earlier posts, but this is where we part ways. 90+ sucks. It’s better than 32 or less, but to say it’s better than 60 is absurd.

One of the greatest joys in life to me is the adding and subtracting of layers on a nice cool brisk day.

No. I just like summertime.
You guys like to wear several layers. Different strokes. I don't HATE 60 degrees. It's fine. But if it were up to me, I'd rather it be hot out than chilly out.

I get in. Dunk my head underneath. Emerge with my head facing up so my hair is all slicked back. Put on the shades. And crack a lukewarm cold one.

45 before 90 is crazy. 90 is perfect beach weather. 45 isn’t perfect for anything.

45 is pretty great for running.
-
I agree that this is extremely contingent on what you are doing outside. 80 degrees is pretty good for sitting outside and drinking a beer, but not good for snow skiing. I have trouble assigning values to all of the various outdoor activities I enjoy, so I don't really get off the ground with this temperature ranking stuff.

How much snow skiing do you do in Kansas?

That's just one example of many. I try to run 3-4 times per week. Like RATM says, 45 is pretty great for that. Cooler temps are also great for sitting by a fire pit. And I've been snow sledding three times this winter.
-
45 is too cold for running. I prefer 80.

I think 55 is about perfect, but 45 is still great. Really anywhere 45-65 is good. I sweat way too much at 80.

With proper heating/shade when needed outdoor drinking goes from 40 to 95

I'm changing my vote. I'm tired of me and all my kids being sick. One of my kids sent home again sick. I vote all the non-sick season months are great and all the sick season months are hell.

cf3, I'd like to introduce you to my monthly rankings

Can I bring clouds into this? I'd take 80 over 60 if both scenarios are clear and sunny. If it's cloudy and 80, I'll take a clear and sunny 60.

70-90
---above this line are elite tier---
90-95

95-100

100-105
30-50
---above this line are not good
-30-30
105-120
---above this line don't go outside---
Depends on the activity. If I'm running, 30-50 is prime weather. A day in the woods... 45-70. Headed to the beach... Give me 80-95. Golf... 70-85. Beers on my ugly deck after sunset... 60-80.

Maybe it's not just Kansas...January loses all over

After all this heady debate, I am change my vote from February to January. January is a near hopeless month, with the spirit dampening February looming. February, is a month followed by a Month of hope, which is in like a lion but out like a lamb.

Cheer up peter Kansas winters are becoming more mild every year

January and it's not even close. February is 3 days shorter and the days are already getting noticeably longer.

really you kind of have to group the months in 3-month pods
stud pod:
october / may / september
ok pod:
april / june / november
pud pod:
july / march / december
crap pod:
february / january / august
this february and march have both sucked tremendously, and it looks like we won't even hit 60 well into april.
like can i just drink a beer outside with short sleeves on yet? my goodness weather, wtf is going on here

There is a possibility of snow on April 1. :frown:

I'd just like to know the sun is still a thing at this point.

it's literally november weather outside, you babies. only now we have warm weather to look forward to rather than the depths of winter.

I'd just like to know the sun is still a thing at this point.
I said something like that today too!!!! It’s been like winter Seattle for like two weeks straight. No offense, Trim.

I heard someone complain about 82 degrees. I ended them.

Yeah this is great. It's 85 degrees out. Best weather of the year is happening right now and the damn pools aren't even open for us to enjoy it to the max. That's a strike against May in my book.

counterpoint: it's like 61 at night and you can sleep with the windows open

Oh that's great. Don't get me wrong. I'm not knocking May for its weather -- i'm knocking society, maaan, for not letting us bronze poolside yet.

Everyone rank these temperatures in order of how much you like them. (PLEASE do not use SD's "above this line" scale thing.)
105 degrees F

7. 105 degrees F

3 & 4 kinda a coinflip
-
that's insane, tobias
-
I agree with Tobias, only flip 3 and 4.
-
Alls I know is that there were a lot more people downtown out enjoying the 85 degree weather yesterday than I ever saw enjoying the 30 degree weather in February. Lots of windows open in restaurants, cars, etc. Didn't see much of that in the 30 degree hellscape.
-
The sweet spot is 45-70. Anything above or below that is really too hot or too cold.
-
yeah get out of here with below freezing being ideal for anything. i mean even if you're skiing or ice fishing, guess what you can still do that when it's 70 out. idiots.
-
The sweet spot is 45-70. Anything above or below that is really too hot or too cold.
Every sane person agrees

i think i agree with this

people who prefer 30 over 80 have to be super fat

I wonder whether bar patios are more popular when it's 30 degrees out or it's 80.

if it's 71 degrees outside it's not too hot, even for like Donald Trump in full parachute suit

30 degrees is next to last place, 105 is dead last obviously.

71 is still p good mcat

I like it a bit warmer, I am more built to handle it well and not so built to handle the cold. That being said, extreme heat is the worst.
-
I think 80 is better than 30 if I'm just sitting around. If I'm actually doing something, 30 is better. I'd rather mow the lawn on a 30 degree day in March than on an 80 degree day in May.
-
not even you believe that when you say it
-
30 degrees is better than 80 if you're doing something? like making a snowman?
-
ice skating?
-
sitting in a deer stand?
-
wearing a parka?
-
caroling?
-
Pretty much anything, really.
-
swimming?
-
golfing?
-
going to the lake?
-
grilling out with friends?
-
My favorite time of the year to go to royals games are those April games that get canceled because it's 30 degrees.
-
swimming?
You go swimming to escape the heat. There is no need for that if it's 30 degrees outside. Really 80 is too cold to swim, too.
golfing?
30 degrees is better if you are walking. 80 is better with a cart.
grilling out with friends?
80 is better. You aren't doing anything but sitting around.
-
-
30 is better than 105......that's about it.
-
god i wish there was 30 degree weather for me to mow in

Let's go have a picnic everybody ...it's 30 and cloudy with a nice 7 mph north breeze.

No, denied. July is close to the worst but at least it has a holiday. August is still too hot to enjoy football.

August is HAWT but it is peak swimming weather, Also when it rains, it pours.

yearning for 30 degree weather is the funniest thing in the world.
ohhhh baby. cannot wait for those beautiful january afternoons to go have picnics with the family.
-
now dlew is just making up events he's heard about in movies, sad
-
a family picnic? now i've heard it all
-
Sounds like a great time at 105 degrees :Ugh:
-
I have never been on a picnic where I wasn't wishing I was eating at home instead. I've also never been on a picnic when it's 30 degrees outside, so that probably explains why I don't like them very much.
-
December tailgates are my favorite guys....mittens....propane heaters.....the lovely BSFS north wind..... :emawkid:
-
30 degrees is so yuck, the only temp on there that I would hate more (other than 105) is 40, when it's raining. Rain and 40 is the worst, worse than 30 and blizzard.

it's been a tremendous august here. like mid 80s highs and sunny and awesome. but the royals suck. but WGAF. we won a world series like 15 minutes ago. plus I'm at like a 5.

Worst month of the year begins.
-
I changed my vote from February to July. If August is somehow worse than July was, then I will change it again.
-
July was a bad one, and it’s only gonna get worse in the coming decades
-
We are on the precipice of fall and that is the most glorious 3 months of the entire year.
-
february is worse than anything august can throw at me
-
We are on the precipice of fall and that is the most glorious 3 months of the entire year.
Agree. The approaching fall, long hours of sunlight and cool morning temps take the edge off of the otherwise miserable climate during August.
The gray, cold darkness of Jan/Feb is the worst. Bad months for my mental health.
-
yeah, august is better than july because the days are shorter and you're finally downhilling.
-
i just changed my vote from august to july thanks to the wisdom i've accumulated in the last few years.
-
february is worse than anything august can throw at me
Yes, the 1/15-2/15 hybrid is always the worst month-long stretch. I can’t stand the Kansas heat either, but that extreme cold w/ no snow and lots of wind is the worst.
-
i ate lunch outside today. am i doing that in february? unlikely!

This is awful. You summer people are freaks.

Summer people are just trying too hard to be edgy
-
summer is awesome. ate outside today. went on a long walk on saturday morning. you just aren't doing that crap when it's 20 degrees and windy outside.
like in february, do you really like the weather? or do you just not go outside because it's not an option so you aren't really exposed to weather period. newsflash, einsteins, you pale freaks don't have to go outside now. me and the rest of the bronze beefcakes have no problem sitting poolside and keeping your girlfriends company.
-

Another thing that is great about February is that you don't have to worry about some weirdo asking you if you want to grab lunch outside when it's 96 degrees out and flies are everywhere.

you guys are experiencing recency bias. february sucks so hard from start to finish, and it's dark 24/7

There are nice sunny days in February where the high is in the 50s. The only nice days in July and August are rainy days.

You're about equally likely to die in either scenario, assuming you aren't talking about one of the nice days in February.

You are a lot more likely to catch a cold or flu in February, so there is that.

do dlew and mocat know about clothes?

I am on a path to arranging my life so that I am in North of Minneapolis in the summers. When I am an empty nester in 4 years I might be up there 5 months of the year from May - September annually.

Pete that is maybe the smartest thing I’ve heard ITT

My kid is going to the Twins game there Wednesday and it’s supposed to be 100. Should have went to like the arctic circle Pete.
-
I will be about 3.5 hours north of the cities.
-
I got a very small place up there. I will still experience my 2 least favorite months in KS, with January and February. So, not a perfect system. Maybe someday I will spend those two months down south.
-
March sucks.
-
do dlew and mocat know about clothes?
:Wha:
-
I like snow. It's pretty.
The first 1 maybe 2 days of snow is pretty and then its just a dirty slushy mess. Also it snows like what, 5-6 times a year at most in the KC area?
Give me the August heat over the February cold any day of the week.

I can say from experience that road tripping/VQ-ing in Mew Mexico and Arizona In February is pretty elite. Rivals northern Minnesota in July/August

Yeah, my ideal US weather Calendar while still keeping in touch with KC friends/family would look like this
Jan/Mid March - Florida or the southwest
Mid-March/June - KC
June/September - Wyoming or somewhere in the mountains
September/Christmas - KC
-
So far August is the least hot month in Texas in my experience. It only got up to 99 today here. Was quite pleasant.

The average daily high temp in feb 2022 was 53 degrees in KC.
Meanwhile i just went outside and it is brutal.
I’m not anti summer, I’m anti august. June and July have all the fun stuff of summer with concerts and trips and the pool. August it just stays terrible hot with no fun stuff. Kids go back to school, there’s no football yet, it all just sucks
-
The winter in KC will have some cold snaps, but it rarely stays so cold you can’t be outdoors for more than a few days at a time. Meanwhile in august it’s just the literal worst

Kids going back to school is an excellent point. July is definitely worse than August.

i had a nice walk for lunch today (the worst august has to offer)
-
I got a nice run in this morning. Really looking forward to when I can start running after work and not have to get out of bed so early.
-
Just did a quick sun bathe after a workout. Felt great. It was def a bit hot. Wish I had time to go hit the pool for a bit, but have to work.
Being inside with my coat on getting ready for bed would also be fun too I guess.

I don't, but Mrs SF is always wearing a giant sweatshirt or something. It will be getting dark soon, so time for bed. Winter is great!!!

One of the good things about winter - sleeping under huge Duvet while your face is nice and cool.

Avg high temp in feb 2022 is 43 by my math
-
Shoot. I read it wrong.

If my options are 90 or 45 it’s an easy choice for me but to each their own

It's typical July vs typical February. The worst of July is more like 107.

This morning was close to the worst weather I've ever felt.
-
agreed. and yet i rode my bike to work today. i could never do that on february's worst day.
-
number of times i've shoveled my driveway this february: multiple (iirc)
number of times i've shoveled my driveway this August: 0
That said, i know august has just begun so this isn't really a fair comparison

Today is totally disgusting

Go to lakes.

The weather is outstanding and will be for the current 10-day forecast.
-
March: Everything is mud, not really hot or cold. Hard to dress for, windy etc.
A lot like feb but longer
-
Good news and bad news.
Good news is that we will all probably soften our opinions on February.
Bad news is that August might eventually kill us.

Ugh, KC in August is so TERRIBLE! Its currently 74 degrees with low humidity and the extended forecast shows no days above 90 for the remainder of AUGUST.
I CANT WAIT FOR FEBRUARY!!!

Watering plants is very relaxing.
I have really been treasuring the dawn and dusk times this month. Taking advantage of the cool(ish) air to get our dog some exercise.

This exact week is the BEST week of weather in Nebraska

Yeah, the very tail end of August usually isn't so bad. July is the worst month.

people that don't think february is the worst month are clowns, this is embarrassing

I think it’s pretty well settled at this point. Now, we might change our minds in 30 years, but I will probably have dementia then so take that with a grain of salt.

Went to play in the back yard with my kids for 12 minutes last evening before calling it quits due to the dozens of mosquito bites upon every inch of bare skin.

Mosquitoes seem to be getting more hungry and numerous as the summer goes along.

Time of day matters for the mosquitoes, I think.

just realized that even if they were otherwise identical july would be worse than august because when you escape july you're right into august but when you finally make it through august you're right into autumn.
can't believe i ever thought august was worse than july.

Only one more day of stupid August!

Another data point for the August > July argument.....College Football games are played in August.

Never. Just going to use my free $ I get from signing up from the apps. I might put $50 into sports gambling a year. Momma wants a new house.

Take that $50 and buy something nice for WC jr instead

I don't think you can cash out the free money. You have to win something with it and then cash out the winnings. The whole idea is to get people addicted.

Wacky, as your IRL friend let's hit up the craps table again and this time avoid laughing and spraying beer out your nose all over the table in the middle of a pandemic.

I was saying I usually spend about $50 of my own $ every year on it. So, he has a point. Anyways, go cats and Chiefs! #September

I successfully made it through the worst month. It is September and guess what Wildcats- October and November are next.

The ten day ford cast according to my heat measuring app says we won't hit 90 again for the next 10 days after today. Anyone who disagrees that this is great news is most likely stinky.

Cf3, I am totally getting hyped for October

This month. My birthday, lil wacky's, wife's, and my mothers. Cat football and attending an Ohio State game on a work trip. Next month, Napa and Halloween. Let's get this, fall, folks!
-
Serious question yet too lazy to look up, is there a time when this crap goes live? It's the 1st but my app still says it's "almost time"

Noon

Thanks

It’s supposed to be like 100 on gameday, in September. Yuck!

Right, but September has football the entire month, and is only hot for like half of it (for now).
