I started a challenge on December 1st to only listen to Christmas music in car, and nothing else, until Jan. 1, 2018. For me, that means two radio stations.
Those Holiday Traditions and Holly on XM radio.
So far so good. I am seeing a really solid mood improvement, and my conversational vocabulary is increasing. For example, in a meeting today I referred to the recent drop in temperature as “the weather outside is frightful” without even consciously deciding to do so.
-
I would not last even one day with this challenge.
-
sounds like fun, but i'm already 7 days behind! HELP!
-
Why would you do this to yourself?
Also, do they ever play "Baby it's Cold Outside" ? I hope you don't hear it then start trying to persuade women to stay against their will.
-
If you successfully persuade the women, then it's not really against their will anymore, Mrs. Gooch.

A mile down the road....

Anyone can start this challenge! That’s the great part.
My current fav is Burl Ives singing “Have a jolly jolly Christmas.” Dean Martin singing “Silent Night” has me in tears every time! Man, what a delight!
-
Pete do they ever play that one David Bowie/Bing Crosby collaboration?
-
The Holiday Traditions station is by far my preference over the Holly station. HT is the old stuff, like Perry Como, Frank, Dean, Gene Autry, Nat, you know. Holly is the newish stuff. I can’t take oscar Springsteen Xmas songs, for example. However, I do like Bono singing Xmas songs, that’s dreamy.

The drummer boy one? Yep, that’s on there!
-
Pete, are you trying to induce mass suicides?

On Opposite Day!
This is totally cathartic. You have to get yourself emotionally and spiritually prepared first, and then when you slide into your ride with a hot cup of coffee and crank those Yuletide tunes you will be elevated to a higher plane of thinking.
Helps you walk into work and say “what can I do to help?” Ya know?
-
I think it's gonna be tough after December 26. But I'm not familiar w/ the stations in question.
My favorites?
Christmas Wrapping (by The Waitresses), Paul McCartney's "simply having a wonderful christmastime", and any version of "Sleigh Ride".
Also "Jingle Bell Rock" is not a "rock" song in any way, shape, or form.
-
It’s a litmus test for me. If I can’t appreciate the Xmas music at any given time, the problem resides inside me.
-
Agree with Russ on Sir Paul’s Xmas songs. Those are wonderful.
-
Youtube is blocked at work so hopefully nobody linked these above.
Christmas in Hollis by Run DMC
Christmas Wrapping by The Waitresses
And Christmas Wrapping was mine!
:shy:
There's a nice rotation of Christmas songs that I like to run through a couple of times every year but man, I don't know if there's enough to make it through an entire month especially with a 1 hour daily work commute. I guess that's the challenging part!
-
I have a buddy that listens to Christmas music almost exlcusively from Nov 1-Jan 1. He also wears KU clothing every day. I think there's a correlation.
-
Big time 'We Three Kings' fan here. Big time.

wow I'm rarely this consistent with things
I spent a really, really long time trying to think of a better x-mas song than Sleigh Ride. In the end, I was forced to conclude that it's impossible.
agree, for traditional songs.
Best non-traditional:

My kid's Shrek the Halls dvd has ruined this song for me.

johnny mathis is christmas to me

Pete I’m glad you are enjoying this but I can’t even listen to one Christmas song without wanting to turn it off.

Heard Santa Claus Is Coming To Town by The Boss today. Love that one!

This is true. You are definitely more pretentious than I am. :D

Christmas Tree by Lady Gaga
Spoiler alert: it's not really about a Christmas tree. This song is quite filthy. Do not let your kids listen to it! It's a catchy mashup of Little Drummer Boy and Deck the Halls so that's why it's in my holiday music rotation.
-
If I'm forced to listen to this garbage give some bourbon and a crooner like Harry Connick Jr. or Michael Bublé.

Sorry, but "Simply having a wonderful christmas time" is one of my most hated christmas songs, I can't explain why.
Let it snow is my go to christmas jam though.
I find my self listening to Pandora's Electric Christmas station off and on throughout the season
-
the music is great but it's v repetitive, and the "simply" is a pretty lame effort at finding two syllables to fit in there

It sounds like someone cranked it out on a Casio in their mom's basement.
-
well yeah that's why it's great

I started the challenge a couple days early this year, tho I am in rental cars frequently during the week where I will probably not listen to the radio at all. I am limiting the challenge to be in my own personal car.
-
107.7 in Topeka started playing Christmas music about a week before Thanksgiving. It's like they're giving people training sessions to work in some Christmas music to their rotations before your challenge starts!
-
Is there a hallmark movie channel version of this challenge where your wife watches nothing but hallmark christmas movies?
I can only watch Candice Cameron Bure play so many "business type woman too busy for christmas cheer" before my head explodes. (Or i get kicked out of the room for making jokes about these rinse and repeat movies....)

WHO WILL JOIN ME IN THE CHALLENGE THIS YEAR?!?!
Rules: Whenever you are driving, you MUST listen to christmas music, and only christmas music from Dec 1 - Jan 1. This is a great way to self-examine your spiritual condition on a daily basis (or however frequently you drive now). If you get irritated by the music, remember, it's not the music, it's you. If you are in the right spiritual condition, you will not be annoyed by the christmas music!

Pete I won't lie to you...channel 70 on the XM radio was the billy joel channel and life was good and then apparently after halloween they pivoted to christmas music and it was like getting kicked directly in the testicles and i just cannot do it

If I was being held at Guantanamo Bay and they played Xmas music, I would completely cave.

Who will join me in the December water-board challenge?
Rules: for the entire month of December, anytime you are relaxing on the couch, you will also be water-boarded. Remember, if you do not enjoy being water-boarded you just aren't in the right spiritual place!

Bunch of grinches in here. Been jamming all week to Christmas music. Fiance is nonplussed with my November love for Christmas tunes.
