So Boy Scouts is now accepting girl... scouts. You know who is pissed about this? Girl Scouts. They already have their own organization. And they basically had only two reasons to exist: (1) they couldn't join the boys' club, and (2) cookies.
They've still got the cookies, but for how long? I was storefront peddling that stale, nasty, horribly over-priced cub scout popcorn this past weekend and (I crap you not) my son said "Dad, why can't we sell cookies? People buy way more cookies than popcorn."
If the Boy Scouts are making a play for the girls, it's only a matter of time before they come for the cookies. This is the beginning of the end for GSA.

I say this without the least bit of hyperbole, this is the dumbest controversy I've ever seen. First of all, boy scouts is not becoming a coed organization, girls will have to join all girls dens. Secondly, these two organizations are completely different in their focus and culture. There will be very very little girls who join the boy scouts. I'm stunned at the ridiculous reaction by the girl scouts. Their organization should be applauding the increased choice and opportunity this provides girls everywhere. In my job I work closely with both of these organizations, more gs than bs. This will be a blip on the radar, and it won't help either organizations declining membership.

While the Boy Scouts have an official policy against atheists and agnostics participating in scouting, the Girl Scouts make it clear that girls may substitute any words they like for the part of the Girl Scout Pledge in which they promise “to serve God.”
Wait, so it is acceptable in the Girl Scouts organization for members to pledge loyalty to ISIS or the KKK?

Ok seriously, Boy Scouts is great if you find a good troop. Can be hit or miss. I really don't care if girls are allowed to join - and I doubt the vast majority of girls care, either. Women are already heavily involved as leaders of the Cub Scouts ("Den Moms") and that works great. As the boys get older, female BSA leaders gets a little weird. As in, very few moms would want to go camping and attend summer camp with a bunch of 15 and 16 year old boys, and those that do are pretty rough.

I was a Boy Scout I am complete crap at tying knots.
I learned a ton of knots during scouts, forgot most of it, and then re-learned a bunch online because knowing how to tie the right kind of knot for different uses is a really good skill to have.

I've never had to tie a knot that was not on a piece of clothing. I can tie a tie like 3-4 different ways though. OVERRATED.

empirical evidence: 2 nieces bombarding me with emails for $40 tins of cashews. they are literally stressed out about selling enough stuff. the #ack? only a portion of the PROFITS from this nut company even goes to GS and nobody was willing to tell me how much makes it to my local troupe. probably none.
i am willing to stand by my take against moderate to medium-high opposition
thankfully GS will now have to compete and this will lead to a growth of opportunity for girls.

Depends upon your definition of "cheating." My 7yo is not operating a band saw on his own. I follow all the rules, but I do guide him through and assist him with a lot of steps other dads/kids don't do, like polishing wheel hubs, etc. I don't think that is cheating as long as I make sure he's always involved in each step. He also picks the color and applies the decals, which is the most important thing.

Our Cub Scout leader was an IT guy and we had a computerized track. Race was based on total time as every car ran a race in every one of six lanes.

Predictably, the media is outraged at the actions of the den leader; not at all by the actions of the mom. Apparently the kid read his mom's prepared remarks for over 2 minutes before being cut off. They included such gems as "Why on earth would you want somebody who beats their wife to have access to a gun?”
It's gross when parents use their kids as political proxies. I would have asked the mom to leave the den, too - not the kid (and I'm guessing that's what actually happened).
