Title: VPNs for international TV watching
Post by: Institutional Control on September 07, 2017, 12:22:39 PM
Hey guys.... last year when in Europe, my DirecTV stream was blocked because of my location.  Is there a way to download a VPN app or something for my iPad or laptop that will enable me to fool DirecTV in to thinking I am in the US?

Thank you in advance and I'll hang up and listen.

You can also use openvpn and then connect using one of vpnbook.coms VPN's depending on where you want to be "at" in the world

I think I use a different vpn app every time I travel, I haven't really discovered a difference in any of them.

Props to Choo Choo for the openvpn suggestion. The U.S. Server on my ZenMate extension stopped working yesterday, causing much consternation. Problem solved.

My  was really just for any "free" international vpn service in general.  I get the use case for logistical tomfoolery but without knowing who exactly your traffic is tunneling through it's a pretty dangerous game to play.  I think in McKee's case if he could set up a openvpn connection from his location to his home base then that is a pretty secure communcation as he knows and trusts both endpoints.

how secure does an espn3 stream need to be?

Not much.  But I use my devices for a lot more than just streaming video.

Yeah free isn't the best but it's a way to do what he was asking.  Streaming through TOR is slow and frowned upon, plus it changes exchange points a lot.  I've created my own openvpn server before but that's a lot of work if you just want simplicity.

but Batt BcKee doesn't and you responded to his inquiry about how to spoof espn with a secure vpn how-to.  so there's that.

And congrats to you, spracne, on the extra $10 you're carrying around today!

Would somebody walk me through this? I download the software from openvpn.net and then what do I get from vpnbook.com?

So how did it work Batt BcKee?  I’ve used it many times in the states but never outside the country.  I set up my own server for this trip and it’s working very well.

My flight (Delta) to Europe leaves Saturday evening. Any way to watch the Cats game on a transatlantic flight or will I have to follow this one on ESPN gamecast?

I'm not familiar with Delta.  Most flights on American do not have internet on transatlantic flights and if they do, you can't stream video.
