Hey guys we're less than two weeks away from the total solar eclipse that will grace the skies from sea to shining sea. I have had my plans set for over 6 months for this thing and I'm really starting to get excited. I will be posting interesting materials about it the closer we get but you guys should also post cool and interesting stuff. The important details are as follows:
Date: Monday, August 21, 2017.
Where: Entering the US from Oregon and exiting through South Carolina.
Time: Entering Oregon around 10:15AM PDT, entering KS around 1:05PM CDT, and exiting SC around 2:55PM EDT.
IMPORTANT: Do NOT stare at the sun with the naked eye outside of the totality time. You can get safe viewing glasses at most optometrist offices.
I will be in Casper, WY for this eclipse and the exact epicenter will pass over downtown. Hotels have been sold out for over a year and people are coming from all over the world to see this event. If you guys know anything about me, you know I live for this kind of stuff. Here is a good article about the times and the path.

I plan to drive across town and see the totality
-
I plan to not drive anywhere because apparently all of California will be in this area causing a general shitstorm of traffic jams and wildfires
-
I'll step outside and see the 30 seconds allotted to me by the sun gods.
-
I'll likely forget about it and miss the event entirely
-
taking the day off to watch with the fam in Lincoln. got those welding goggle things for watching it.

I haven't got any specs yet. Where did you get yours?
-

Yup, don't care at all
-
Can I just get the cardboard glasses they are selling at Lowe's? Or will I be blind afterwards?
-
no negative consequences

That's what mine are, but they are from NASA. There's a lot of counterfeit ones out there. The safe ones you can put on and you shouldn't be able to see anything through the film in normal light.
-
just use a natty case, don't give in to Big Glasses
-
i made a shitload of fake ones and have been selling them on amazon for $8 per
good news is i've made a ton of $$
-
Apparently St Joe is the best place in the world to watch this thing. :gocho:

amazon of course
-
My work is catering this event. Booze, KC Joes, etc. They pretty much said do what you want.
-
Heading to southern Kentucky for the day. Pulling the kids from school.
-
I'll probably peek out the window or something when this thing happens. I think people/traffic will be crazy in the totality zone or whatever and I want no part of that.
-

Sure doesn't seem to be the case. :gocho:

Have client up n St. Joe who is having a party.
-
Yup, have heard from multiple sources that st joe is spot #1
-
Finally. Living in St. Joe pays off.

I'm taking a couple hours off work, grabbing the kids and wife and driving north of topeka to sabetha (have family there). Will watch it unfold, drop the kids and wife off, and go back to work. I remember the annular eclipse in '94, I was in junior high and we were allowed to watch outside.

I've been planning on heading up near Hiawatha someplace with Mikey jr. , but as we get closer I'm a little worried about the traffic jam projections I keep hearing about.

My hope is they all try to go to St. Joe. My sister said there was a watch party type thing in downtown Sabetha. Going to avoid that. I don't care if we watch it from a gas station or a dirt road, as long as we watch it.

yeah, that was my take too, avoid the planned events.

you guys ever read A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court when you were a kid? incred luck for that guy to go back in time right when the eclipse he knew about was going to happen.
-
It sounds like the event will be similar to the Royals WS celebration, but across the entire country. If I were going, I'd pick somewhere out in the middle of nowhere. Any semi-populated locale sounds like it will be overrun with people.
-
I'm sure the best pictures will be posted here.

I'm going to Jeff City MO to a friend's house that overlooks the MO river. Will be amaze.
-
anyone got a good eclipse guy in Holton?
-
How long does this thing last?
-
The link in the very first post can answer that question
-
Depends on where you are

no

If the ole farmstead was north, I'd head there to watch.
-
"best place to watch the eclipse/avoid traffic guy" is a new and exciting guy
-
I'll be at work. When should I go outside. East KCish

It takes a couple hours for the moon to completely traverse the sun, but the total eclipse will last anywhere from 1 second to 2 minutes 40 seconds depending upon how close you are to the center of the path of totality. Apparently a total eclipse is way cooler than a 99% eclipse so you want to get into the path of totality if you can.
I'm gonna try for Atchison.

Is Big Optometry pushing all of the non-safe glasses for cheap?

Lincoln, NE? It's barely even in the totality zone. Is this list a joke? Jefferson City?! LOL!
-
I try to read these articles and get bored instantly. Quickly and concisely, if this thing is about when the moon is right in between you people and the sun and blocking the sun out, why are you wearing special glasses to look at the sun that you can't see. Sun's out every day with no impediments and we're all fine. And tf is a corona in a sun context?
-

Only during totality can you observe it without the glasses. The glasses leading up to it just protect your eyes and let you observe the completion of totality.
The corona is basically a halo of plasma that extends beyond the suns surface. Solar flares exist in this region which are projectiles of plasma driven by magnetism that can be hundreds of earths in diameter.

The city tweeted earlier that if you're gonna look at the eclipse from here to maybe wear some of those glasses. If I happen to have Payton out when this thing happens I'll check it out in the same way I look up when the sun is unencumbered while wearing my canadian drug store sunglasses and maybe a hat and try not to cream my shorts in the dog park.

Yeah, I drive into the sun sometimes with nothing but a visor, so I'm sure just looking up at this thing and squinting for the 30 seconds or however long it lasts would be just fine.
-
Better get Payton some dog eclipse glasses.

I don't know what the Wichita Eagle is gonna do to fill space once this thing is over.* They're averaging about three eclipse stories a day. There also seems to be an undue amount of concern about eye damage. Wichita public schools are now requiring parents to sign a liability waiver before allowing kids outside to view. It's like some people think that if you take a quick peak at the sun without special glasses your eyeballs are going to melt out of your skull Indiana Jones-style.
* actually I do. They'll just go back to reviewing the new McDonalds in Maize and running outdated AP stories.

you can see where the path of totality was based on red lines on traffic maps

-
I enjoyed it despite the clouds and landing 45 minutes prior to the total.

I liked when it got super duper dark.

Already looking ahead to my next one
This... I'm seriously considering coastal Mexico. Almost 0% chance of clouds since it's desert.

Clouds rolled in just before totality for me, but got some cool pics before.

If you work downtown, you didn't see totality, friend. Only a bunch of hayseeds saw it up north and even they didn't, because it was cloudy. :th_twocents:

Oh we saw totality. Had to be north of like 10th.
-
wacky were you in leawood for this thing?
-
Yes, but I had coworkers take the day off (science geeks) and they drove north for this thing and said it was super cloudy and disappointing. There's no way either you got pure totality in mhk. We had the NASA channel on at work. The coolest thing I saw all day was in Oregon and Idaho where it went complete black for like a minute and 50 seconds. Just seems insane to travel from Australia, London, etc. to see 2 minutes of darkness. But hey, if that's your thing, so be it.
-
Like, I IRL would of rather watched a Brucecats bball game yesterday. :D
-
well i was downtown and i saw totality right before the clouds rolled in

Yeah I can't imagine making a day of driving anywhere for 1pm darkness but whatever floats people's boats.

You saw 99.6% of "totality" with clouds in the way, I saw 99.2% "totality" with clear skies. I highly doubt it was that much of a game changer. :dunno:

I was in Liberty and saw totality for about 2 minutes with no clouds. I feel bad for folks who had to work. I gave several of my employees some time off to check it out. Maybe if you guys would beg harder...

Work let several ppl off for this thing. I just value my employer enough not to waste their time with such a silly event. It was pretty nice of them to allow ppl to leave if they wanted to or to chow down and party with them here at the office.

I remember when I didn't go to the WC game against Oak and the next day I was acting like I wasn't super pissed I missed it. It was hard to pretend but I said I saw it on tv and you know tv is actually better.

I'm sitting on 3 weeks of PTO. :dubious: I rather make $ by hiring doctors vs watching the world go dark for 2 minutes. Stop taking the solar ellipse so seriously. Sheesh.

You are literally going out of your way to say the coolest thing anybody saw in the totality range(when you didn't see it) wasn't a big deal. Seems you are taking this too seriously(deep down you're mad you couldn't see it). Also lol about taking an hour, maybe two, out of a random August Monday to go see this thing.

drove to Watkins Mill St park up north of town for some totality and the clouds parted about 20 minutes before the moment. one of the most amazing moments of my life. if you believe in a creator, it was an amazing display of his creation and beauty. if you don't believe in a creator, what a moment to marvel at the natural world. either way I hope all who experienced it were humbled by it in some way. I found it moving, humbling, beautiful, fun, kinda spooky, and exciting. what a day.
-
We should find more reasons to stop what we are doing and marvel together and celebrate.

did anyone else think, "what if the lights don't come back on?" i did. but then i was like, of course they will- we live on earth. but then i thought of the millions of places around the galaxy that are pitch black 24/7. it wouldn't be fun, folks. be happy with our ecosystem and don't crap on it like wacky did.

Do you guys get all spiritual when it gets dark during a daytime thunderstorm too?

Do you guys get all spiritual when it gets dark during a daytime thunderstorm too?
I didn't really get all spiritual, just marveled at the spectacle was my point. And I often find thunderstorms humbling as well. I bet if I'd gone my life without seeing a massive thunderstorm before yesterday I'd have been awed by it just like I was with the eclipse, perhaps more so.

At my eclipse watch party, I overheard a woman ask "is it the sun or the moon that is causing the shadow?" And at first I thought "what a stupid question," but then I asked myself whether she was actually asking a much deeper philosophical question, like "if a tree falls in the forest..." I mean, what actually casts a shadow - the light source, or the thing in front of the light source? Or is it really both?
In reality, she probably wasn't sure if the dark thing was the sun or the moon.
-
it was neither fwiw
-
That is pretty deep ksuw, thank you for sharing, I'm going to mull this over a bit this afternoon

I will too, seven.

the sun creates an environment where it's possible to create a shadow, but guys the moon is making the shadow

Key is flexibility. Be close to the path, and if the weather is crappy or there are clouds be willing to drive a bit to the to the next spot. My gf at the time and I drive out to Sedalia and was as aforementioned, well worth the experience

We watched at Rock Creek Station State Park west of Beatrice, NE. There were a few clouds but they did not obstruct the view and it was awesome to experience the eclipse with several hundred strangers. 360 degrees of twilight color during the middle of the day was awesome.

If you're traveling closer, hotels within the band are expensive AF. People have been booking about a year out. Stay somewhere an hour out and then drive into it.

My dad told me that Austin has already declared a state of emergency, and there are roadside signs on I-35 1.) stating that, and 2.) telling people not to pull over on the interstate to watch. Because you just know some numbskulls are going to that. You can't stop stupid.

Guys!! Today is the day. I can’t sleep
-
My kids are awake (young adults) and packing for the day with their friends.
-
I'm so excited. I'm so excited. I'm so ... scared.
-
Hope that everyone who travelled to be in the path of totality has awesome viewing conditions.
I had the privilege of seeing the 2017 eclipse in Nebraska. Outside of seeing the Grand Canyon for the first time, it is most amazing natural phenomenon that I have experienced.
If you need some eclipse-related reading, this essay by Annie Dillard "Total Eclipse" is fantastic.

Having this attitude makes me think you really didn’t “see” it. Because anyone who has actually witnessed totality would 100% want to see it again, especially twice the duration.

I had just landed at KCI and rushed downtown as I think that was the northern edge in KC. it was cool to see to go black and hear the crickets, etc. start up but can't image traveling somewhere in the middle of nowhere to 'experience' that again.
-
I'm with Phil on this. We saw the last one (as documented in this thread) and it was kind of cool but not something I need to ever experience again. I don't get what the big deal is. It gets dark every day, I can just experience dark later if I need to for some reason.
-
I must be dead inside. I visited the Grand Canyon with my wife during our Fiesta Bowl trip of 2013, and I thought it was neat, but didn’t exactly have a spiritual moment. I’m in the path today and will be jacked up for my son, but not overly excited in all honesty. Should I look into prozac?

I’ll enjoy it to the max for everyone.

Maybe they shouldn't tell us when/where it's happening next time, then it would be cool again.
Enjoy it getting dark though everyone who celebrates.

To each their own. I will say that I feel very fortunate to live within the path of totality because I'd probably never travel to see one.
As it is I'm excited to experience it, though.

DBT. I assume your weather forecast looks good?
-
It's a really cool experience. If you get the chance you should enjoy it as often as it happens.

I'll walk outside and embrace the 99.8%. Hard pass on the traffic fiasco with everyone returning from Indiana.

DBT. I assume your weather forecast looks good?
Cloudy but actually pretty clear right now! It’s just starting you guys!!!!!!!!!

The skies have cleared up for me. Will be heading up to the deck to enjoy mimosas and tacos soon.

is this traditional eclipse fare I'm not aware of?

They don't even have this thing in Europe, total amateurs :jerk:
This is one of the reasons we fought the war.

Oh man, you and I are similar. We have friends that love to road trip and go see all of this stuff. Grand Canyon, Mount Rushmore, etc. All I ever think about is being in a car for like 12 hours and pulling up to Mount Rushmore, getting out, looking at it for like 30 seconds, and then getting back in the car going "well that was pretty neat". Same with a giant hole in the ground. Not my jam.

rushmore actually impressed me more than I thought it would as I'm generally the exact same. Don't really get it. Of course I did rushmore in fall of 2020 so maybe I was just wanting some sort of stimulation/travel.

Got lucky that the clouds cleared here at the house just long enough.

Same. It was touch and go for a while but delivered just in time.

Same here. Admittedly, it was a little cooler than I gave it credit for. @DBT, I think it's awesome that you are jazzed for it, and out there living your best life at all these various travels. You're my hero! Side note, I'm a dumb dumb. I was expecting it to get much darker. Anybody else? It definitely made me appreciate how dang powerful the sun's light is.

Anyone get raptured yet or nah?

I was half way up and they found out that i am a Unitarian.

Has to be an eclipse AND an earthquake for that. Have you ever even read the Bible?
-
as soon as we hit full totality, my entire neighborhood lost all gravity and an orange elephant flew by.
i’ve never been a huge eclipse guy but this one blew my mind, go cats!
-
The people who said there would be high traffic were absolutely right. 50-60% of the people got up and left in the 15 minutes after max eclipse. Bike for the win!

Spracs here, posting from Heaven.

I was very curious about the light situation since nighttime typically includes light reflecting off the moon. Didn’t really have any particular expectations though.

Here’s what the view of the city looked like from my place.

Before I was raptured.

Is that big yellow thing the Rapture Ladder or something?
Sweet view. Too bad you got raptured from that skyline. T's & T's.

Before I was raptured, it is/was (I don't know?) a pedestrian bridge support.

90% eclipse was like 5000% dumber than 100%.
-
It’s ok you didn’t get raptured. I didn’t either.
-
I have to stay here for another day :curse:

Sorry for your plight. I just took an elevator up two floors.
-
Another family that was with us in Dallas said there wasn't a single rental car available anywhere. When I looked a couple months ago Love was booked and DFW rentals were like $800 for the weekend
