Title: Total Solar Eclipse 2017
Post by: The Big Train on August 09, 2017, 06:40:06 PM
Hey guys we're less than two weeks away from the total solar eclipse that will grace the skies from sea to shining sea.  I have had my plans set for over 6 months for this thing and I'm really starting to get excited.  I will be posting interesting materials about it the closer we get but you guys should also post cool and interesting stuff.  The important details are as follows:

Date: Monday, August 21, 2017.
Where:  Entering the US from Oregon and exiting through South Carolina.
Time: Entering Oregon around 10:15AM PDT, entering KS around 1:05PM CDT, and exiting SC around 2:55PM EDT.
IMPORTANT:  Do NOT stare at the sun with the naked eye outside of the totality time.  You can get safe viewing glasses at most optometrist offices.

I will be in Casper, WY for this eclipse and the exact epicenter will pass over downtown.  Hotels have been sold out for over a year and people are coming from all over the world to see this event.  If you guys know anything about me, you know I live for this kind of stuff.  Here is a good article about the times and the path.

I plan to not drive anywhere because apparently all of California will be in this area causing a general shitstorm of traffic jams and wildfires

That's what mine are, but they are from NASA.  There's a lot of counterfeit ones out there.  The safe ones you can put on and you shouldn't be able to see anything through the film in normal light.

I'm taking a couple hours off work, grabbing the kids and wife and driving north of topeka to sabetha (have family there).  Will watch it unfold, drop the kids and wife off, and go back to work.  I remember the annular eclipse in '94, I was in junior high and we were allowed to watch outside.

I've been planning on heading up near Hiawatha someplace with Mikey jr. , but as we get closer I'm a little worried about the traffic jam projections I keep hearing about.

My hope is they all try to go to St. Joe.  My sister said there was a watch party type thing in downtown Sabetha.  Going to avoid that.  I don't care if we watch it from a gas station or a dirt road, as long as we watch it.

It sounds like the event will be similar to the Royals WS celebration, but across the entire country. If I were going, I'd pick somewhere out in the middle of nowhere. Any semi-populated locale sounds like it will be overrun with people.

It takes a couple hours for the moon to completely traverse the sun, but the total eclipse will last anywhere from 1 second to 2 minutes 40 seconds depending upon how close you are to the center of the path of totality. Apparently a total eclipse is way cooler than a 99% eclipse so you want to get into the path of totality if you can.

I'm gonna try for Atchison.

I try to read these articles and get bored instantly.  Quickly and concisely, if this thing is about when the moon is right in between you people and the sun and blocking the sun out, why are you wearing special glasses to look at the sun that you can't see.  Sun's out every day with no impediments and we're all fine.  And tf is a corona in a sun context?

Only during totality can you observe it without the glasses.  The glasses leading up to it just protect your eyes and let you observe the completion of totality.

The corona is basically a halo of plasma that extends beyond the suns surface.  Solar flares exist in this region which are projectiles of plasma driven by magnetism that can be hundreds of earths in diameter.

Yeah, I drive into the sun sometimes with nothing but a visor, so I'm sure just looking up at this thing and squinting for the 30 seconds or however long it lasts would be just fine.

I don't know what the Wichita Eagle is gonna do to fill space once this thing is over.* They're averaging about three eclipse stories a day. There also seems to be an undue amount of concern about eye damage. Wichita public schools are now requiring parents to sign a liability waiver before allowing kids outside to view. It's like some people think that if you take a quick peak at the sun without special glasses your eyeballs are going to melt out of your skull Indiana Jones-style.

* actually I do. They'll just go back to reviewing the new McDonalds in Maize and running outdated AP stories.

If you work downtown, you didn't see totality, friend. Only a bunch of hayseeds saw it up north and even they didn't, because it was cloudy.  :th_twocents:

Yes, but I had coworkers take the day off (science geeks) and they drove north for this thing and said it was super cloudy and disappointing. There's no way either you got pure totality in mhk. We had the NASA channel on at work. The coolest thing I saw all day was in Oregon and Idaho where it went complete black for like a minute and 50 seconds. Just seems insane to travel from Australia, London, etc. to see 2 minutes of darkness. But hey, if that's your thing, so be it.

You saw 99.6% of "totality" with clouds in the way, I saw 99.2% "totality" with clear skies. I highly doubt it was that much of a game changer.  :dunno:

Work let several ppl off for this thing. I just value my employer enough not to waste their time with such a silly event. It was pretty nice of them to allow ppl to leave if they wanted to or to chow down and party with them here at the office.

drove to Watkins Mill St park up north of town for some totality and the clouds parted about 20 minutes before the moment. one of the most amazing moments of my life. if you believe in a creator, it was an amazing display of his creation and beauty. if you don't believe in a creator, what a moment to marvel at the natural world. either way I hope all who experienced it were humbled by it in some way. I found it moving, humbling, beautiful, fun, kinda spooky, and exciting. what a day.

I didn't really get all spiritual, just marveled at the spectacle was my point. And I often find thunderstorms humbling as well. I bet if I'd gone my life without seeing a massive thunderstorm before yesterday I'd have been awed by it just like I was with the eclipse, perhaps more so.

At my eclipse watch party, I overheard a woman ask "is it the sun or the moon that is causing the shadow?" And at first I thought "what a stupid question," but then I asked myself whether she was actually asking a much deeper philosophical question, like "if a tree falls in the forest..." I mean, what actually casts a shadow - the light source, or the thing in front of the light source? Or is it really both?

In reality, she probably wasn't sure if the dark thing was the sun or the moon.

Key is flexibility. Be close to the path, and if the weather is crappy or there are clouds be willing to drive a bit to the to the next spot. My gf at the time and I drive out to Sedalia and was as aforementioned, well worth the experience

Yup, me and some friends already have a hotel in southern Missouri ready
2017 was awesome.

It was well, well, worth the experience. I am very excited to do it again.

St Joe MO was at the epicenter of eclipse mania in 2017. Then it rained the whole day lol.

Key is flexibility. Be close to the path, and if the weather is crappy or there are clouds be willing to drive a bit to the to the next spot. My gf at the time and I drive out to Sedalia and was as aforementioned, well worth the experience
We watched at Rock Creek Station State Park west of Beatrice, NE. There were a few clouds but they did not obstruct the view and it was awesome to experience the eclipse with several hundred strangers. 360 degrees of twilight color during the middle of the day was awesome.

If you're traveling closer, hotels within the band are expensive AF.  People have been booking about a year out.  Stay somewhere an hour out and then drive into it.

My dad told me that Austin has already declared a state of emergency, and there are roadside signs on I-35 1.) stating that, and 2.) telling people not to pull over on the interstate to watch. Because you just know some numbskulls are going to that. You can't stop stupid.

Hope that everyone who travelled to be in the path of totality has awesome viewing conditions.
I had the privilege of seeing the 2017 eclipse in Nebraska. Outside of seeing the Grand Canyon for the first time, it is most amazing natural phenomenon that I have experienced.

If you need some eclipse-related reading, this essay by Annie Dillard "Total Eclipse" is fantastic.

I had just landed at KCI and rushed downtown as I think that was the northern edge in KC. it was cool to see to go black and hear the crickets, etc. start up but can't image traveling somewhere in the middle of nowhere to 'experience' that again.

I'm with Phil on this. We saw the last one (as documented in this thread) and it was kind of cool but not something I need to ever experience again. I don't get what the big deal is. It gets dark every day, I can just experience dark later if I need to for some reason.

I must be dead inside. I visited the Grand Canyon with my wife during our Fiesta Bowl trip of 2013, and I thought it was neat, but didn’t exactly have a spiritual moment. I’m in the path today and will be jacked up for my son, but not overly excited in all honesty. Should I look into prozac?

Oh man, you and I are similar. We have friends that love to road trip and go see all of this stuff. Grand Canyon, Mount Rushmore, etc. All I ever think about is being in a car for like 12 hours and pulling up to Mount Rushmore, getting out, looking at it for like 30 seconds, and then getting back in the car going "well that was pretty neat". Same with a giant hole in the ground. Not my jam.

rushmore actually impressed me more than I thought it would as I'm generally the exact same. Don't really get it. Of course I did rushmore in fall of 2020 so maybe I was just wanting some sort of stimulation/travel.
