Title: Need some Uber / Lyft advice
Post by: K-S-U-Wildcats! on July 28, 2017, 04:00:54 PM
I've used Uber before no problem, but this time I've got an unusual trip in mind. I'm in a mountain resort town in Colorado (Estes Park) and I want to do an early morning hike that starts about 30 minutes south of Estes, sort of on the way to Boulder. I won't have a car that morning, but my friends can meet me at the end of the hike on the way down to Denver. So I just need a ride from Estes to the trailhead - at about 5:00 am!

I know I can schedule rides in advance, but what do you think my chances are of actually getting a driver for that early?

And do you think it matters if I use Lyft or Uber or do most drivers do both? I generally use Uber but I've got a $50 free card for Lyft.

Got married in Breckenridge. You'll be fine. Request on your way down.

Well crap - neither Uber nor Lyft operate in Estes? I can't even seem to schedule a ride. Am I doing something wrong?

Not Longs - done that several times. Even better! If I can get a ride.

If you are doing a mountain trail, something you should consider is that it might be hard to get an Uber or Lyft driver with enough clearance to get you to the trail head. I guess if they don't operate in Estes, it doesn't really matter, though.

I've got a 1 week permit I could just hand to the driver, but the booths are almost never manned before 8am. Was going to do a hike deeeep into Wild Basin, which is an amazing part of the park, but Lyft says it doesn't serve the area, and Uber isn't pulling up a single driver or allowing me to schedule a ride in advance. Surprised in this resort town there aren't lots of people driving for Uber on the side - I thought the early time might be a problem but not a complete lack of drivers.

Have you looked into a local shuttle service? Maybe ask at a bike shop.  A lot of mountain towns have those to drop of one way bikers/hikers.  And I'm not talking about an established city or county shuttle bus, more like some dude with a van that works for tips.

I ended up not needing the Uber after all. Hike was amazing btw.

Then I took an Uber home from the airport and my driver was Weird. Styled himself a professional video game player (Madden was his specialty). Talked the whole ride home. Not a good Uber experience.

No I ended up having a car but had to be back by 11. So I left at around 4am and hiked/jogged about 16 miles in 6 hours. Saw some awesome stuff. Nearly stepped on a bull moose.

Here is mister moose. I was making my way up a ridge and my head was down because I was watching my footing. And then about 10 feet in front of me this guy stood up out of the grass. Scared the crap out of me.
