very cool

is this the "shocking" thing re: a starter on the team? if so,
-
Actual question... Has an active college football player come out? At least a major college starter? IIRC Sam came out post season/pre draft

I was just thinking about this, and I don't think it has happened before.

I certainly don't remember hearing about it, but I also don't think I'd really think much about it if I heard of one and it wasn't a KState guy

It's undoubtedly huge news, it's the lead story on espn.com right now, this will be gigantic national news this evening.
-
He broke free from the shackles of judgmental Lawrence and can now be himself in Manhattan.

Sportscenter is nothing but SEC and Lonzo Ball.
-
Not only is this good for our team but I think it is even better for us as a university.

From the article on ESPN:
Frantz and incoming Arizona freshman defensive end My-King Johnson will be the first two openly gay active FBS players when the 2017 season kicks off.
In all seriousness, great for him, but "My-King Johnson"???

it's a great thing and hopefully it emboldens other gay football players to be open about this to their teammates, but it doesn't fit my definition of "shocking". it would be more shocking if our team of 120 football players didn't have a single gay guy on it.

Fortunately Arizona doesn't kick off until 4 hours after us

Hahaha no doubt uses all sorts of plays on that.

Was discussing this situation at a katpak this weekend, this is going to be very positive for the university and I hope the Lawrence types aren't too vocal

Go Cats and Go Scott :lynchmob:
-
Will hopefully push a lot of Kansans towards inclusiveness. Excited for Kansas State to be at the forefront of the issue. Excited that Scott had found support within the team.
-
cheers to scott :emawkid:

If I recall correctly Sam didn't come out until after the season and came out to his teammates before the bowl game. I believe most teammates said they already knew prior to him coming out to the team. Could be mistaken tho.

Yeah that would be very shocking. Hopefully it gets to the point where all players that are gay feel it can be known that they are gay and they can be open about it.
Very awesome that he felt accepted by the team and Snyder.
-
good for Scott. i hope his courage improves the lives of others.

We'll rarely hear about this once the season starts.

its awesome that this is happening but to say its gigantic news is dumb, these are the top stories on ESPN's front page...
Cubs get Quintana from ChiSox for prospects
Sources: Pelicans meet with free agent Rondo
Venus fights off Konta, reaches Wimbledon final
Freeze disappointed by timing of Nutt lawsuit
Lonzo not in negotiations with Nike, LaVar says
Vegas wins on Cubs fans' uncashed bet slips
Law's midseason top 50 MLB prospects
-
no surprise he's from lawrence haha right guys?
-
Video gave me another reason to like Alex Barnes.

Scott is a really good person.
very happy for him

you know him pretty well?

i'm just really happy about this situation. proud that k-state can be associated with acceptance, proud that the team accepted him, proud that snyder reacted the way he did, and proud that no one went public with it for two years.
selfishly, i'm glad that i get to point to this to prove maybe k-staters are less hayseedy then some think. the reaction i've seen on twitter has been 99% positive. even Wabash Station is overwhelmingly voicing their support. i'm looking forward to the attention that we will get this season, maybe even increase our tv coverage.
go cats.

Well said.
-
Have not read most of the coverage, but what has Snyder said if anything?
Btw, I'm not shocked the team has a gay player, and I'm even less surprised the team and public reaction has been overwhelmingly positive. But I do agree with those that say this is a pretty big deal. This is good for KSU and great that Scott can be honest with himself and the team.
Who knows if it will make a bit of difference in the football field, but I know this: If we are good like we should be, the media will be all over our nuts with the great storylines this team has.

Not sure what you're arguing for or against but when I posted that Scott's video was on the top of the page on espn.com. His story is currently on the front page of CNN.com and nbcnews.com

K-State Named A Top Choice For LGBTQ Students

eff yeah!
-
I'm happy for Scott and happy for Kansas State and happy for the state of Kansas. Good people deserve good things.
-
I don't know Scott but you can tell that he is such a Kansas kid. He's me but probably lived terrified half of his life and isn't any more because he's surrounded by good people in Kansas and we should all be thankful for that.

Rusty? :excited:

This shouldn't have to be a story, but it absolutely has to be.
Good for Scott. And unless someone else is emboldened to come out, K-State having the first openly gay football player to actually play a down of football is definitely a good thing for the program and university.

That being said, time to gow win a big 12 title.
:emawkid:
-
Good for Scott. I understand that there's still a phobia of homosexuality in athletics and it takes courage to buck that trend. But also, looking forward to the day when people can just play football without feeling compelled to announce whether they prefer having sex with men or women.
-
There are really only winners in a deal like this. I mean, maybe a few losers, but they are just the tiny minority of bigots who are put off by this....mostly because they know the days of their line of thinking are numbered, and they are increasingly revealing their true hateful selves (which causes them some discomfort).
But, really mostly just winners!

thinking about NU hiring the homophobic piece of human garbage today and remembered this thread. there wasn't a thing mentioned all season as far as I recall. also imagine if you were a player in the closet and your team hired a piece of crap like Ron Brown.

I think we should send a message that we welcome all transfers from NU who are uncomfortable with the hiring of piece of crap.

no thanks, nebraska was 4-8 last year, or something equally embarassing
