Title: While I understand . . . I still laugh a little . . .
Post by: sonofdaxjones on May 15, 2010, 11:59:23 AM
I have no doubt that mu is a good school, but as someone who has watched the old  Big 8 schools for years.   I still look at them as the kid in class who thinks he knows all the answers, whose parents are slightly upper middle class but think they're rich,  who always raises his hand, who thinks he's smarter than everyone else . . . when in fact he's right maybe 65% of the time and struggles to make the A/B honor roll,  and while he makes the sports teams he doesn't get to play much . . . but the thinks he should be starting and team captain.   Meanwhile other kids keep their head down, only brag when they can back it up, are smarter and start on the sports teams and win more.

I will say that I think their media market is slightly overblown. Sure they are near a large market, but how many people in that market are actual fans. They got passed up for the Insight Bowl by Iowa State last year, and the Orange Bowl by KU just a couple years prior. You would think that with so many fans in such a large tv market, that wouldn't be the case. :dunno:

They are us if we had 2 KCs and no KUs.  They have some media market.

Yes, but they have to split KC with KU and K-State, and St. Louis with Illinois. It's much larger than our market, no doubt. I guess I'm just sick of hearing about how big it is.

Yeah, it's prolly the biggest in the North though.  Which is really sad given their history of non-success.

I was Texas but went to a very small school.  Like, I fully realized that if I went to a 6A school I would have prolly been a Mizzou or even KU.  The key was that I was smart enough to realize it and pretended that I would have been Texas regardless.  I also did this at K-State.

Mizzou has the least amount of Big 12 titles of any conference team.  They've never been to a BCS Bowl or a Final Four.  Honestly, the only reason the Big 10 gives them a chance is because the Big 10 wants the KC and St. Louis markets, and they realize that Mizzou is no threat to the big boys like Ohio State and Michigan.  Mizzou scrapes by on the reputation of its journalism school, but other than that, it's nothing special.  Hell, KU's journalism school is top 10, and their pharmacy program is considered one of the best in the country.  Mizzou is also ranked lower than KU in the US News' top 100.

This wouldn't be a horrible post if you just would have left out the validation attempt.  (bolded)

To me having a good Journalism school just isn't that impressive.    It's a nice bragging point I guess . . . a few years ago I saw a ranking that had K-State's Miller School in the Top 15.   Back before Weefer went all PC and fired their adviser the Collegian won multiple prestigious awards.

Yeah, no kidding. Try having good programs where the graduates actually make decent money. Nobody reads newspapers anyway.

I agree.  ku graduates many fine insurance salesmen and accounting clerks.  I'd hire them, but they always see themselves as more important than they really are, and forego hard work on the basis that their reputation precedes them.

Was Baylor in HS, Colorado my freshman year of college, and 1990's Nebraska my last three years of college :surprised:

Was def. TT(under Leech) in high school.  I was pretty popular, but not super popular.  Not rich and new it, had a chip on my shoulder and was good at sports but not quite as good as the real big dogs(UT and OU.  I also partied a lot.

I'm really only quoting this because everyone not at work should look at your user pic.

They beat KU by one score in a game that wasn't decided until Mizzou recovered an onside kick.  Mizzou then got passed over by KU for the BCS Orange Bowl.  Maybe next time?

In the past 2 years researchers at K-State have had two major discovery's of note, that received Top 50 innovations/inventions rankings from acclaimed research and technology journals.  Going off the top of my head I recall that 1 was a bio-hazard (bio warfare/bio terrorism) suppression system, and the other was a state of the art innovation in micro radiation detection systems.    But if you didn't follow that stuff closely you'd never know it.   But hey, mu's got a good J-School supposedly and they they decided that their nuclear reactor was going to produce a lot of isotopes for medicine.   Oh and they have a lot of different schools/colleges under the MU Columbia Umbrella . . . the funny thing is, they're so insecure they've ensured that is the case via the Missouri Board of Curators (Their Board of Regents).   Not saying that's a bad thing, but I guess it just matters how it gets publicized and hyped.

I read Tigerboard and it's really nothing about what mu can bring to the table, with the exception of TV sets, and pretty much all about what the Big 10 is going to do for mu.

But hey, I wish we had more TV sets.

KU was playing catch up the whole game... If you can't hit easy FGs, you don't deserve BCS

Does the Big 10 split all revenue equally? If so, wouldn't Mizzou have to generate more revenue than the average Big 10 team for all of those schools to actually not lose money on this deal? It seems to me that they would be below average in the Big 10.
