Quote
Tennessee search for an athletics director has been full of plenty of twists and turns. The last twist and turn is one that no one saw coming and barring any last minute snag the University of Tennessee is tabbing Kansas State Athletics Director John Currie to be the next AD in Knoxville.

On Friday, North Carolina Athletics Director Bubba Cunningham emerged as the hot name in the search. Sunday evening, Cunningham pulled his name out of contention.

This week, it was expected that the search committee would interview three candidates with Cincinnati's Mike Bohn, former Carolina Panthers President Danny Morrison, and Hall of Fame coach Phillip Fulmer as the three finalists. Sources say that Fulmer spoke with some of the committee members over the weekend but it's unclear if that was a formal interview.

However, in a surprise move Monday, talks heated up with Currie about a deal and that is the direction Tennessee has went.

University of Tennessee chancellor Dr. Beverly Davenport, with key committee approvals, has chosen to go. She made it clear from the beginning that she wanted a Power 5 sitting AD and sources said Monday night the decision made offer Currie the job to be Tennessee's next athletics director.

Currie worked at Tennessee starting in 1997. In May of 2009, Currie became Kansas State's athletics director.

No, oscar gets next season unless he Altman's us.

If I was an AD I would rather have oscar on thin ice than have to hire a coach as soon as I got the job anyways.

I read the article and his premise was wrong. His take was Weber would win quickly and get him a job quickly. The "told you so" narrative doesn't fit when he's still here and Weber's a loser

I definitely agree with that, Currie didn't parlay it into a different job when he could have after oscar's early success, but perhaps something else Reiter said in the article is the case.

Quote
One of two things is going on with Kansas State’s athletic director.

Either John Currie is borderline incompetent at the job, with a shaky idea of how to win in a place like Manhattan, or else he’s in it for himself and would rather run off the right guy because he doesn’t like him than change his own ways in order to keep him.

If it’s the former, Currie will get his due in two or three years. Running off Martin from a place like Kansas State is a fireable offense. Being college basketball, that bill won’t come due for a few years.

But there’s always option two, which I suspect to be behind most of this: That Currie made this hire for Currie and Currie’s career. Weber has a squeaky-clean image, giving Currie some high marks with high-minded university presidents. Weber can win with Martin’s players, giving Currie a possible one- or two-year window of faux achievement. And Currie, who will never get credit for LHC Bill Snyder and didn’t have the good sense to want credit for keeping Frank Martin, finally has a hire of his own to smack on his resume and wave around to prospective employers.

Which is why I think hiring oscar Weber is entirely about John Currie and not at all about oscar Weber. K-State’s AD, having run out the right guy, now has brought in as a replacement someone perfectly built to get John Currie a job elsewhere.

Plus, Currie was still able to get the job he always wanted, maybe just a few more years later than he expected.

Title: Re: Currie...adios!
Post by: #LIFE on February 28, 2017, 05:36:41 PM
I remember it all very vividly. When K-State donors found out the previous AD was playing fast and loose with their money, they, and the fans, were in an uproar. The media had a heyday. They were eating it up because they could really dance over the grave of K-State Athletics. You would expect the media would be having the same heyday over the state of KU basketball with it's crime spree and, subsequent, cover ups. But I digress. It was big news as the media ridiculed the state of Kansas State Athletics.

Enter one John Currie. A man of principle. A man of integrity. He saved Kansas State Athletics by gaining, first of all, the trust of the big donors. He raised donations to levels unimaginable. He oversaw vast improvements in infrastructure, which all K-Staters will benefit from for years in the future.
John made one mistake. This man of integrity dared say no to a widely venerated man who had been brought in by the same regime that had been playing fast and loose with the money in the first place. The man of integrity insisted on integrity in his Athletic Department. That would be okay if a coach was a loser, like Prince. It was a death sentence when the coach had been winning with a shady DC pipeline. Currie was finished because integrity takes a back seat to winning.

A big load has been lifted from this poster. My money is staying in my pocket. From here on out, I will buy tickets on a per game basis. Donations will stop. I shall see how things develop over the coming years. If integrity remains in the program, I'll reconsider. If, however, the win at all costs mentality takes hold, I'm right where I want to be. There is a slim chance that K-State can bring in an AD, and coach, who will play honestly and provide the type of success that will please the ravenous fan base. It can be done, but there aren't a large number of coaches who could do so in a Power 5 conference. Let's hope the force is with us this time.

This is the same guy that had minions dig through the trash to find a receipt tied to a mbb player and forced the kid to forego playing in his final game at KSU,

the same guy that blackmailed Angel Rodriguez into staying at KSU after Martin was forced out,

the same guy that also tried to blackmail a wbb player that wanted to transfer after her coach was fired,

the same guy that forced the baseball coach to take down a Tweet showing Frank Martin visiting the baseball team during a weight lifting session in South Carolina,

the same guy that purposely omitted even listing Frank Martin's bio as a former mbb coach on the school's athletic website...

Yeah, you're right, telling a legendary football coach to "sit your ass down" is totally out of character.

It happened as he described it.

Trust me.

I don't, sorry.

Now tell me the biggest difference between all of those and the story that Wallace told that you are backing up, I will even ignore the couple of exaggerations and mistruths in the stories above.

Neither Angel or Leti were blackmailed. Leti certainly should have gotten her release but she wasn't blackmailed, do you know what blackmail is?

Currie did not order the baseball tweet removed, it was reported that it was removed because someone in the department was sensitive to his potential reaction.

The obvious difference between all of those stories and the one that Wallace told is that those other stories have been told and reported on by several sources. If John Currie told the golf coach to sit his ass down, we would have heard about it, that isn't an occurrence that just blows over. If John Currie told LHC Bill Snyder to sit his ass down, one of them would have had to go. I am also 1000000% sure that the first time we heard about it wouldn't have been to a random coaching rumor website from Ryan Wallace. Ryan's employer runs a business where it would have been incredibly lucrative for that story to surface in a different manner than what it did.

It's stunning that anyone over the age of 10 has to have this explained to. The irony of this is that if you came on here and told the story, i would have been more inclined to believe it. I certainly would have questioned the delayed timing of the story but there would have been less reason to be skeptical. A part time writer revealing this story for the first time to a radio station where he thought no one locally would hear is absurd. Fitz has been on every radio station in Kansas, has written multiple columns, and hosted a 90 minute podcast since Currie left. Do you really think that story would have been known to Wallace and no one else in that office?

I'm guessing you and the wedding DJamer had the same source, be more skeptical.

I am very willing to believe that something approximately like that story happened. John Currie is a very insecure and arrogant man. I don't think it necessarily would make it out into the media all that easily, I would imagine Bill threatened everyone with their life if they told that story to anyone. He wouldn't want the reputation of K-State to suffer because of a disagreement he had with the AD, even if it was the other guy that was out of line. I certainly don't think it's so unbelievable as to suggest that you'd have to be touched in the head to entertain its veracity. I may not be the most unbiased guy though. I want to believe every bad thing I hear about John Currie because he's a giant eff face and he deserves to have his reputation pulled through the mud since he has been so willing to let that happen to anybody else who gets in his way.

The disbelief doesn't come from whether or not Currie has the capacity to say that, I don't know the man that well despite the fact I've spoken to him more than once. The disbelief is from the pretty obvious problematic way the story was brought to light.

Blackmail comes from Leti's own account. She was ther and we were not, so believe what you want. But if Currie told her he will not grant her release unless she stays at least one year and remains quiet about the deal, that IS blackmail.

I'd agree but the times I've dealt with him he's been in dealing with the customer mode.

I will also say for the people who say they could imagine him saying that; it's a pretty big departure from what attributes he is given by people on this message board. I think i may have met maybe three people in my entire life who if in Currie's position would tell LHC Bill Snyder to sit his ass down, and I don't think any of those three would have the brains and temperament to become a P5 athletic director and stay one for nine years. A person who frames Jamar with a receipt at Dillons isn't the same person who would tell LHC Bill Snyder to sit his ass down. If he has the balls to do that he has the balls to run Frank without going through whatever to screw Jamar.

Most of my times talking with him have been in closed athlete type environments. I think those are much more genuine than open public events. That's where my view comes from, I can't really speak outside of that from experience.

If they acted out of sensitivity to a reaction that they predicted Currie would exhibit, then it was based on established behavior, and then Currie is responsible for the action.

sheesh!

And for the record, I was the source of the "why isn't Frank Martin's bio on the website." I emailed Schultz about it and he feigned ignorance that it was an accidental oversight. Look it up yourself.

I know servers that have waited on him. Their impressions of him have been that he's an awkward dork that makes bad jokes (like ordering a salad for his wife and saying to the table that he's putting her on a diet) and is kind of a cheap bad person.  :dunno:
