Title: Where in the Southeast would you live....
Post by: Institutional Control on February 19, 2017, 03:00:16 PM
I've been offered a very good job. However, I will have to relocate to my assigned region which is the Southeast.  I can live anywhere within the region but obviously proximity to a decent airport would be a must. We have good friends in the Raleigh Durham area and in the Melbourne, FL area so we're going to look into those areas. Anyone have any suggestions?

Probably rent at first until we become more familiar with the area and decide if we want to stay. I would build again but I guess it would depend on the housing market wherever we choose to live.

I've only heard fantastic things about Charleston.

I would ask what kinds of things you need other then a nicer airport.  Activities, social things, climate?

I think Atlanta, Charlotte, Nashville, RDU, and DC would all be fine choices. Although RDU and Nashville are relatively lacking in the airport front.

DC could be in his footprint, but it might not. It certainly isn't unreasonable choice given his criteria.

Nashville, Savanah, Chattanooga, Charlotte, Greenville are all good choices.

GTFOOTT with DC and Atlanta, gross.

You're already moving to the southeast because the job requires it.  Live, at least at the start, wherever will make your job easiest and free up the most of your own time.

If you'll be flying a lot, I'd go for Charlotte. Plenty of direct flights to most of the southeast. Close to mountains. Three hours to the beach. Good weather. Decent cost of living.

If airport isn't important, I'd live along the Atlantic. I've lived near Charleston, Jacksonville, Orlando. I'm a big fan of Charleston. Savannah to Jacksonville is nice too. South of Jax gets a little warmer than I'd enjoy year round.

Nashville and RDU are just fine on the airport front.

They're fine, but I don't think they'd be great if you're taking frequent trips to non-hub cities in the southeast. Charlotte, Atlanta, and DC would all offer directs to any city in the region, but Nashville and RDU wouldn't.

It's an intetesting question. Some of the biggest considerations for me would be: Atlanta for culture and metropolitan stuff. New Orleans for CULTURE. Some nice Florida place like West Palm because it's not the South and beaches.

I will be gone during the week most of the time. So the important part is that we find someplace my wife and daughter will like. I feel like the smaller cites would be more laid back than the bigger cities.

Asheville would have a shitty airport (but would be great otherwise)

Delta, American, and United all fly out of there to their regional hubs. it wouldn't be much worse than Savannah/Charleston where you are stopping off at those same places anyway.

any of the college towns would be good spots as well. Columbia, Athens, Charlottesville, etc. but with similar airport issues. not sure just how major of an airport you are requiring here. college towns will have good education if you have kids, arts if you art, etc.

Yeah I think those airports would suck, too if you're flying weekly.

The OP said airport convenience was a must.  If you really need direct flights and fly a lot, I'd move to Atlanta...more directs than anywhere else.  I think the town gets a bad rap.  There is a lot to do, and there is a vibrant arts community there too.  Ride the train to the airport. Easy peasy.

It's the cultural center of the south and arguably the cultural center of Black America. Plus it would be nice for frequent travel. Those features obviously will appeal to some more than others.

the cultural center thing is so subjective that it seems like a non-starter and having hartsfield as your home airport would suck giant balls

can't imagine someone answering "why did you move to atlanta?" with that it's the cultural center of the south, but anyway

Yeah pretty much every factor people consider when choosing where to live (outside of cost of living and maybe school test scores) is subjective. And even those factors are considered with some degree of subjectivity.

Check out Pooler and Richmond Hill areas. They're "suburbs" of Savannah and have good schools and relatively affordable real estate.

A couple restaurant recommendations in Savannah- Treylor Park, Alligator Soul, Cotton and Rye, Rocks on the River (shrimp and grits eggs Benedict for breakfast is amazing).

It's really not that hot though (it is but relative). Like, Manhattan Kansas in summer is hot and humid AF. It gets that hot in the Southeast. Not, like, hotter.

Does your company consider Louisville in the Southeast? It's Upper Midwest for my organization. Anyhow, I like it here. Summer weather isn't as extreme on the humidity side but winter can have some cold days.

Downside is so damn far from the ocean. Closest beach is nine hours. I'd prefer to be a bit closer.

Nashville would be a better mild climate choice and it's only six hours to the beach. Still not the crap hot summer that you'll have in Georgia.

KY is not considered part of the SE by the company.

I already know that my largest customer is in GA. That said, they have offices spread around the country that I will be going to as well. The policy to have the client principles live in the same region as their accounts is a new company strategy.  My entire team is currently spread out across the country and are being told to move or be reassigned.

Thanks. My wife was already checking out houses in Pooler earlier today.

when my wife and i vacationed on Tybee Island a number of years ago I was kinda fascinated by the neighborhoods along Highway 80 that runs from downtown Savannah to the beach.  A quick look on Zillow tells me the area is Whitemarsh Island and Wilmington Island - it seems like a neat area that is sandwiched between the 3 things that make Savannah cool - the ocean, the river and the historic downtown.

Hurricanes & flooding would be an issue there and the drive to airport is not a simple one.

Neither place is really high on the great tacos pyramid. I haven't been to RDU in several years but don't recall it being known for much of anything when it comes to regional cuisine. Savannah has the whole seafood thing going for it. I haven't looked but you could probably find some great fish/shrimp tacos around. I'll look and report back later.

There are a lot of neat areas like that up and down the I-95 corridor within a 30 minute commute of Savannah. The weather effects are definitely a concern for the coastal communities east of I-95 and anybody who lives in one of the marshy areas will pay for it in insurance premiums. I have several friends who rent places near Midway that are in the marshy areas and they love it.

Living between Savannah and Tybee would add a few minutes to the airport commute but it's simple to get on I-16 WB and a short drive from there to the airport.

I've always been under the impression that Orlando would deliver big time in this area.

What are these convenient amenities you speak of?

Name it. Anything you could possibly want during an ordinary day is just a short drive from my house. And it's all new and nice.

suburb kid having advantages:

lots of parking
the whole foods out here is bigger than the downtown shitty one
lots of giant grassy areas for doing kid stuff (houses have giant yards as well)
lower crime
better schools
all your neighbors have kids
best youth sports teams/options
buffalo wild wings around every corner
neighborhood gets snow plowed first
your office building is relocating out there anyway
minor league baseball stadium
the hip place downtown is opening their West/East location out there for their aging regulars
2017 Audi Q7

literally everything that could give you a parent boner is there

I don't know if it's great news but it's not bad news.  An old boss of mine was trying to hire me to join her team. Well, she got promoted during this process and is being relocated to the west. I could take the job but I wouldn't be working for her and I couldn't transfer to her team for like 2 years.  So, I'm going to wait until she's established in her new role and then join that team in 6-8 months. Would likely have to relocate west instead.

I've heard good things about SLC.

The early list of places we would consider.
SLC
Boise
San Diego
San Luis Obispo
Somewhere near the coast in Oregon

san luis obispo is not well situated for air travel.  like you could hardly get worse.  lots of people seem to like it, but i found it pretty underwhelming.

Humble brag is a falsely humble/non chalant brag of something significant.

Fanning brag is a very obvious brag about something that is a humble achievement or accomplishment.

I start the new job June 1st and I have 6 months to be moved.  The places I can live are a little more restrictive than I first thought. I have to live within 90 miles of a company office. Offices are in Tampa, Tallahassee, Miami, Raleigh, Charlotte, Atlanta, Virginia Beach and Richmond. We want to be moved by the time school starts in the fall. We're going to go visit Tampa in June and Raleigh after that.

Myrtle Beach or Jacksonville.

Both are dumps - don't move to either one of these places.

Greenville, SC (I lived here and miss it every day)
It's just outside the 90 miles rule you mentioned...but basically the midway point b/w Charlotte & Atlanta and a very easy drive to both cities and not a bad drive to the beach. Very close to the Blue Ridge Mountains. Beautiful drive up to the Asheville, NC area for a weekend getaway. Reasonable cost of living but some nice history and architecture. Wonderful community with plenty going on.

Charleston, SC

Asheville, NC

Roaring Gap, NC - hardly even a city...but if you can find a way to live here I recommend it.

BMW's growing presence in the area has been a really interesting piece of the city's growth/evolution. There are not many cities in the south where you'll hear a conversation between a person with a hilarious southern accent and a person with a hilarious German accent.

Looks humid af

It is humid. But I can always walk down the street and jump into this alligator infested lake to cool off.

that looks like pretty big lake - can you tube/ski/wakeboard on it?

Yes, you can. The lake is called Lake Tarpon. It has skiing and what not.

I will not be skiing as the lake does have alligators.
it looks like that thing has direct access(for water at least) to Tampa Bay!  I am expecting some Contributions to the fishing thread

From a non-sports tv-watching perspective, you'd hate west coast because it would still come on at "9" but 3 hours after the rest of the world watched it and spoiled all the dragon stuff.  But it'd be worth it.

So... my wife and kid waited out the storm. We got pretty lucky and the storm went east of Tampa.  We had a tree branch fall on our roof but didn't cause much damage. Another tree limb went through the screen  covering the pool. But otherwise, we were pretty lucky.  Power went out about two hours ago. No idea when it will come back on.

Talked to a guy in Nashville last night who's considering quitting his gig here to go to Florida and do a couple months of contracted insurance adjusting. He says he knows someone there who can quickly get him through all the prerequisites and on to the work. He cited this article as why it's "legit."

http://time.com/money/4942541/hurricane-disaster-make-money-insurance-adjuster/

This is an absurd idea he's considering, no? He'd have to pay all his expenses, and wouldn't be able to come back to see his family for at least 2 months.

I know several teachers and small church pastors that side gig as adjusters. Can't imagine dumping main job though.

You mean with respect to teachers, during summer when they're not teaching for 3 months, right? This seems like it would be something to do only if you truly had months of life to spare.

Con, when it comes to his daughter. The rest? Probably a pro, but not enough of an offsetting one.
