I've been doing a little walking/jogging/running lately just trying to get in a little better shape and drop about ten pounds. also have been going outside a bit more and going on just short trails and stuff. then did a five mile hike in/out in CA last week to a pretty neat area where there was a river with a few hot springs next to it and that really got me. it was just amazing. so now i'm going to start doing more of this and training to do something much more in the next year. like maybe a three day hike to start with. Kansas pretty much sucks but Colorado and Arkansas look to have some p great trails that are made for 3/5 day type hikes.
anybody do this? thoughts? drugs?

fancy creek daris, its only 20 min drive ands its as good as it comes in mhk area

The biggest challenge when making the jump from hiking to backpacking is the extra gear and weight. Start working on a list of what you think you will need. REI has some pretty decent printable checklists for this that would be a good starting point. Make sure to add up how much all that crap weighs (including food/water). Take a hike with it all loaded up to check weight. Cut out what you can and then go for it. Maybe an overnighter first to help decide what you can or can't do without.
-
Well, hunters make their own trail.
Good luck rd, happy to help anytime and look forward to hearing about your adventures.
-
I can't get enough hiking. Weather permitting, I've been walking parks/trails over my lunch break for like four years now. All state and national parks have trail maps available online and can make for great day trips.
The Four Pass Loop near Aspen is popular and looks super awesome. Definitely one you want to train for.

Look at this damn pic I took one day during my damn lunch break. One summer, I saw the same great blue heron almost every damn day. No good pics of that.

I love the trails. However the queen and two princesses love my Hilton points. We only day hike. Good times though. We've explored most of the main trails around Gatlinburg as well as Natural Bridge and Red River Gorge in Kentucky. Took a trip to Colorado last year. Oldest daughter and I took on Quandary together. Such a great time.

Been to all of those. No one would ever guess how tremendous Kentucky truly is. One of my all time favorite hikes is Mt LeConte via Alum Cave in GSMNP.

Good advice on just an overnight first. I started looking up everything on the flight back two days ago. It seems like a large amount of stuff but it also all makes sense.
The first thing I need to get is a good pack, fill it up with crap and start walking with it. I loaded up a backpack with ten pounds last night and did three miles on the treadmill but honestly think that might hurt in the long run. Poor form, etc. so I scrapped it and now just back to walking and jogging with no weight until I can research and buy something decent.

i've backpacked parts of the adirondack mountains along the northville-placid trail

highly recommended

I half planned hiking the Flint Hills Nature Trail a few years back. Never happened, but that's a close option for making a several day trip.

an important part of hiking is to sling your jumbo honking DSLR around your neck with just enough battery charge to die right before snapping your first shot and then continue to carry it around for the next ___ hours

RD there is hiking, camping, and backpacking (hike then camp away from car). Don't confuse the three.
There is only one (public) place in KS to do any backpacking, so that sucks.

basically i've hiked a little over the past couple of years, have started to do it more and eventually want to do it to the point that I also start backpacking. that's where I'm at. going to hit up fancy creek/randolph this weekend. 70 degrees! may even do a hike/camp (not backpack) combo. wow!
-
i'll hike to tokyo with you
-
don't be alarmed but there is a valley at fancy I call it vulture valley and basically there are a crap ton of turkey vultures there in the trees. you'll know you are coming up on it by the amount of white crap you will see on the foliage around the trail.

I looked on wikipedia's "hiking" page to see exactly what it means, as I always thought it was walking but on trails or basically non-paved things. I see that in the UK, they simply call both types "walking."
I like the hiking/walking (also sometimes known here as mountain-conquer'n), but the camping looks gross.
-
day hiker/car camper here. i don't like to carry stuff. maybe if i had a pack, not meat, goat.

I'd like to imagine you had a massive pack snake. Or a bunch of smaller pack snakes.

snakes are very slow.

I know. It's still a nice visual.

Been looking into getting some hiking boots and a good pack as the gf can't do much trail running due to an IT band injury. So we're planning on lots of day/weekend hikes and camping this Spring. Tons of serious terrain, so I want something quality, but cant be dropping half a grand on boots/pack.
Any tips/links would be great, TIA.
-
cDub, boots are really personal preference. There are dudes trucking animals out on their backs through rough country wearing low tops type trail runners, and then there's dudes doing day hikes in mid length full leather stuff sole type boots.
Protip: Goretex liner will fail after one season, no matter the brand. I've had that be true in boots ranging from 150 bucks to 450 bucks. So just accept it. If waterproofness is important I'd recommend a smooth leather upper and you can treat with Nikwax.
Also no matter which pair you get, be prepared to get an aftermarket insole. I've tried Superfeet green and they were better than stock Asolo insoles (for me), but then I replaced them with Lathrop & Sons and those were muuuuch better.
Packs, there are lots of good ones and for backpacking I wouldn't spend more than 200 bucks. Osprey is a good start. I have a Deuter I like. Go to REI and try on a bunch with a load. Make sure they fit it to your torso length.
Boots and pack are very important, but so is what (how much) you put inside.
-
Also don't be afraid to buy used, esp packs. People always buy them with big plans and then life happens and they sell them with very little wear.
-
Get yourself a nice Army rucksack and go barefoot.
-
I hike many miles in my Altra Lone Peaks - low top trail runner.
-
I wear my old air max running shoes that already have a rip in the fabric part.
-
I would try a low top if they made one with a stiff/Vibram kinda sole. I'm betting someone makes one but my boots have many miles left so haven't researched.
-
Tennis shoes are plenty good for most hikes. If the trails are generally rough and rocky, get something with a thicker sole. Get a camelback - they're worth it. I second the advice about second hand. I've gotten some sweet deals in the Cabelas Bargain Cave and Craigslist.
-
Second hand packs are great. Replacement bladders are cheap too. No need to second hand that. :-P
-
Thanks for the tips so far, all.
I like the look of those Altra's, just worried about ankle support for serious trails. However, I need a new pair of trail runners, so maybe a 2 for 1... ?
And on the packs, I tried a few Deuter ones on while we were in Germany and loved everything about them. May have to look for a second hand one as suggested!
Thanks!

It's rough ridin' awful is what it is. Runner's Bane. The only way I got rid of mine was foam rolling and taking about 8 weeks off running. Not sure that any special gear is gonna help.
Now I do more hip stretches which is supposed to help stave it off.
-
Ok but what is it
-
Ok but what is it
"Iliotibial Band Syndrome (ITBS) is one of the most common overuse injuries among runners. It occurs when the iliotibial band, the ligament that runs down the outside of the thigh from the hip to the shin, is tight or inflamed. The IT band attaches to the knee and helps stabilize and move the joint. When the IT band isn’t working properly, movement of the knee (and, therefore, running) becomes painful. IT band pain can be severe enough to completely sideline a runner for weeks, or even longer."

As you, I also trail run. The Altra has been a great trail shoe.

You'll have more fun of you tackle difficult trails. For those, turning ankles comes with the territory. I have no doubt that ankle support has spared me a good deal of pain and maybe even serious injury. The soles of running shoes also don't provide nearly as much traction for things like steep, rocky inclines.
For just day hiking, any shoes or packs that are comfortable should be fine. I've been using a very medium quality High Sierra brand pack that I got for free from a previous employer for years. I've never been crazy about it, but it works totally fine.
-
Lone Peaks are knobby and do great on rocks. Flexible but have a nice rock plate to protect the sole. Just not a boot guy unless I'm in the snow.

Vibram will actually sole any shoe/boot you send them. If you ever need that kind of thing.

Well but they can't modify the shank can they? Or maybe they can sneak a stiffer shank in between the two soles?
-
I second the recommendation on Altras. I'm on my second pair of Lone Peaks and use them for trail running, serious hiking, overnight backpacking, and everything in between. Their is a mid-height Lone speak now if you prefer that. Also check out the new King MT. They look like they're a little beefed up. Unless you're carrying a heavy pack, you shouldn't need a boot. But do what's best for you.

Not sure about a new shank, but check out the site, and there's a dealer locator on there. I found 2 shops that have authorized Vibram Cobblers within 15 mins of me here in BFE West Virginia. Gotta be someone close to wherever you are.

Red River Gorge tomorrow! Haven't been on a day hike with the family in a few months.
-
Isle Royale in Lake Superior is great if you want to take off on a 4 to 7 day backpacking trip. Very scenic, wolves and moose on the island. You have to take a 6 hour ferry ride each way to get there, so it's not overly crowded. Loved the 4 day backpacking trip I took with Mrs. Deputy Dawg last summer. Be prepared for temps in the 40's at night (water in Lake Superior is like 42 degrees).

Guess where we're going next weekend!!! :excited:
Hitting up RRG for the first time with the gf and my coworker ans her husband. They've been many times, but I'm definitely excited fot our first trip there.
Weekend trip. Gonna do some day hikes and camp close to the car Friday. Saturday we'll head out to the woods, do some good hiking and set up camp deeper in. Can't wait!
Any tips/must see/do stuff, IPA?

Also, went in to my local running shop to try out some of the suggested trail shoes, and came out with some that seem to beat them all...

Natural Bridge, Double Arch, and Gray's Arch are all great. Double Arch and Natural Bridge have great vistas.
Nice shoes too. Topo makes a great trail shoe.

Those things look disgust but if they fit that's all that matters.

Yeah, I've done the whole "cool colorway" thing with enough shoes. They do make it in a bright blue, but these will hide mud stains much, much easier. Also, they are comfy as hell AND less $ than most others. No brainer for me.
-
Is that the prevailing tread design for trail runners these days? They don't seem knobby enough or something, but that could just be my perception.
Ima buy my first pair or trail runners when I get my REI dividend. Something cheap because I hate running so much. So much.

I've been buying Altra for about two years now. By far the most comfortable shoes I've ever had. Wide toe box =

No, it varies a lot. Nice, dirt single track? Don't need much more traction than a typical running shoe. Steep, technical mountain trails? Aggressive tread and a rock plate of some sort. Desert slickrock? It's more about "grippiness" of the outsole material than tread pattern. Most brands have several models across that range of uses.
-
I wear Altra trail (Lone Peak 1.0) and road shoes (Instinct 3.5). Absolutely love them. Been wearing Altra since they first hit the market.
tdaver nailed the tread design answer. I rarely run in the trail shoe. I use them more for hiking. Most single track works just fine with my road shoes.
BTW... First half marathon in years this morning. 2:06 with some gas in the tank. Hope to crack 4:30 on the marathon in April.

These ones don't have as aggressive of a tread as my last pair did. They should get the job done, though. Love a lot of the other aspects of the shoe.
The gf and I are about to sign up for that REI membership as well. Great program.

Tried to do Angel's Landing, but it was sleeting and gusting when we got to the top and I did not feel comfortable with that.

I didn't like them that much on the hike; didn't feel supportive enough.
Got these last night for like $60 at the nike outlet store and they seem pretty good. A splash of EMAW color too. I can wear them around normal places without being to granola-y and break them in before going back out in nature.

Day hikes, overnight, multi-day?

In my opinion backpacks all come down to the suspension system, and evaluating that is about as subjective as it gets.
That said, if I was in the enviable position of shopping for a new backpack, I would take a hard look at these hot Mystery Ranch deals: https://www.sierra.com/backpacks-duffels-and-dry-bags~d~9319/mystery-ranch~b~37083/
This seems like an exceptional steal depending on your measurements:

This is the question that needs to be answered. You sure as hell don’t need or want a 50 or 70 L pack for a day hike or overnight.
