A small business that I'm a partner in in Wichita was recently filling an entry level position that traditionally turns over about every six months at $10 an hour. They only have one position like this so I suggested offering $15 and maybe we get a large pool of applicants and land a good long term employee and less headaches in the long run. They obviously received more applicants, some 45-55 year olds, some 18-25s, overall a nice group probably 15 applied in a week. They didn't get any minority apps, the managing partner is black, the business is established with a good reputation. How can this happen?
Serious question, this is very odd considering the unemployment numbers.
-
They either didn't see it advertised or have a better deal for income :dunno:
-
I'm wondering why you think you should be getting black applicants in a city that's only 11% black. I'm also wondering why you feel like you need to tell us. Does this confirm your belief that all blacks are lazy, welfare siphoning bums.
-
What kind of better deal could they possibly have, while minorities make up at least 20% of the overall
Population, they probably hold better than 33% of entry level jobs and have a higher unemployment rate so what gives, this opportunity was a pure layup.
-
I think there are some market forces at play here, yes it was one job listed for one week and a small sample size, but zero that's weird. Access to listings? Discouraged by previous job-hunt failures? Assistance programs/ combined with off the books income outrun what an entry level job can yield?
Something is amiss.
-
What line of work are you talking about? What industry?
-
If you can hold a job at McDonald's, you could do this job, and it would be easier.
-
This place probably has a racist reputation

i was at the last meeting and nobody even mentioned it

Have you re-read this? Is this representative of your ability. I ignored puni's because obviously this isn't a sausage/pea/cabbage topic, but Tobias you are better than this.......

goddamnit. how did this end up here.
-
sounds like a great start to a great Ny times Tom Friedman column. probably need a couple quotes from the minority business owner and maybe ask a couple deacons around east Wichita and you could stretch it in to a book deal.
-

No apostrophes

Got a black applicant today :excited: , we hired a guy 3 weeks ago but :excited:

I feel like I just saw a state record buck.

Can you answer this question? You're either lying or breaking the law.
-
I feel like I just saw a state record buck.
Yeah, you're lying. You went from someone else doing the hiring to you being there.
They didn't get any minority apps

Lol, you are really a weird dude, I guess mich is too, is it beyond your ability to imagine me having a conversation with the person interviewing the applicants who told me what I told you? Would it also blow your super sleuth mind to know that I occasionally visit this business that I invest in?
-
All applicants were interviewed?
-
All applicants were interviewed?
yeah, or they had to apply in person maybe? What an inefficient use of time.
-
It's not illegal to ask what race an applicant is on an application; the applicant doesn't have to answer and the answers are to only be used for tracking purposes to ensure the hiring process is drawing minority applicants.
But take the ad down if the position was filled 3 weeks ago.

vestite, I think you need to give my idea some more credit. If you are like you are, and your partner is probably similar to you, it's totally possible this business has a reputation. This is a small town.

I think most everyone missed the part about the managing partner being black.

Black people can't be racist

I don't think that was a part, so nobody missed it

I'm going to really start ignoring lib posts like they're Kim Carnes posts. They don't even really deserve acknowledgment anymore. He'll just say about anything for a reaction these days. :frown:

You literally respond to my posts more than anyone on this board

 lulz. Sure thing, bud.

I suppose in wichita a company owned and managed by a black person could be perceived as racist. ;)

I saw it but I don't know what the relevance is and I didn't dare ask. Is having a black owner, allegedly, supposed to make black people want to apply more? Does the ad and business, say black owned, or FUBU? "I know nothing but white people work at this rent to own place but I want to work there because they have a black part owner!"

Dumb thread with even dumber responses
