So.the people who gave us Obamacare and countless poorly designed and administered programs, what to give us a suger daddy suprise. Sugar daddies usually come with a screwin. Does this include paying for housing? What will we do about those who get worthless degrees and then can't get a job. There are better ways to do this.
-
What are the better ways?
-
I'll be needing a refund then
-
This issue gets so muddled up.
Is the concern fiscal responsibility or the quantity of graduates that don't have skills for the current job market? These are two different issues, even when Reno is the OP.

When public universities become free, they will start out being 16th grade extended high school and retract to 12th grade education. The old "skin in the game" saying is relevant in this situation.

It doesn't have to be that. Germany isn't like that.

yeah, that's just fearmongering. there's nothing saying standards won't be kept.

Yeah ok, this isn't Germany so that's irrelevant
-
And college isn't free. What's your point?

This is America, standards are meant to be lowered.

tuition was free for residents attending the u of california system from inception through 1970 and through most of that time (afaik) they included several of the higher-rated state universities. until fairly recently, tuition for residents was fairly nominal at public universities in most states.

My mother (Fresno Bulldogcat) bragged that she paid off her student loans and bought a Porsche like 5 years after graduating. Then I asked her how much her student loans were and she was like "oh like a thousand dollars maybe?" Tuition was so cheap. :frown:
-
Even in the early 90's tuition was a flat rate per semester at KSU so if you were really motivated you could take a crap load of classes each semester for the same price. My dad graduated debt free in 3 years because of that.

Not everyone should go to college, guys. Nobody should go to these stupid liberal arts schools where people basically major in a hobby.
-
No one said everyone should go to college.
-
I would be fine with making free only available to ppl who meet a high level of qualifications such as high test scores, high gpa, etc. Money makes it not equally available. I mean, dumb rich kids can still go, but they have to pay.

That's the European model as I understand it. Free college is competitive. If you don't make the cut, you get a trade school

Some states already have this model. I know, for instance, Georgia has the Hope Scholarship, which I believe means tuition is free at state universities if you maintain a 3.0+ GPA throughout high school. There's something similar in Louisiana too, but that one has been the subject of much budgetary back-and-forth lately. Prolly a handful of other states that do it too.

Should be easier to pay them, then....fucktard

Lol, oh yeah the gov't is going to happily pay all those special fees that schools tack on tuition (college tuition the second fastest growing cost increase since 1980 next to healthcare) to pay for all those new buildings. If that ever ends schools like Kstate won't be building much of anything.

When I think of categories of people irrationally angry over other people's success, I know the first group that comes to mind is old whites mad about that very successful guy who got his b.a. from Amherst.

One of two things will happen if the government starts paying for tuition.
they will negotiate a lower tuition and the quality of education will become middle schoolish.
they will pay the regular tuition and said tuition will increase quickly since the gov has deep pockets, similar to what has already happened with large amounts of loans available.

WSJ reporting this morning than 16% of student loan debtors are in long term default.
I wonder how many more are in regular default.
