Remember back in like Oct. 2011 when we all pooled our knowledge and helped SD buy a 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited? Well now SD hates that POS and is going to buy something else.
Budget: $65k (don't need to spend all of this if we don't have to)
Style: SUV
Requirements: AWD/FWD. I have two kids now. 3yo lil sd currently sits behind the Jeep drivers seat in a 5 point seat and makes me cram my seat up and still kicks the back of it constantly. Would like more back seat leg room than what a Grand Cherokee provides. Must not be a ford, chevy, dodge, gmc, or chrysler.
Wants: lots of technology and things like that. comfortable ride. heated and ventilated seats. maybe third row?
Don't care about: horsepower and going fast.
things I've looked at and initial thoughts:
honda pilot - It's like a mini van if you are trying to convince yourself you don't drive a mini van but actually you do
volvo xc90 - it's nice but I'm not sure the back seat room is actually enough. am going to cram a 3yo child seat in the back of one over lunch.
audi q7 - like the volvo but seems like it has maybe more room but also looks like a station wagon but still better than the pilot. costs more than the volvo with less stuff maybe?
bmw x5 - not enough room I think
That giant infiniti thing - too big? also maybe too expensive.
toyota highlander - the station wagon'y'ness of the audi combined with the price of the pilot
-
Tell me more about why you don't like the Grand Cherokee. I was looking to upgrade my Cherokee to a Grand Cherokee.
-
I need to know if you are done after 2 kids or if there is a possibility of more
-
have you considered a nissan altima?
-
Tell me more about why you don't like the Grand Cherokee. I was looking to upgrade my Cherokee to a Grand Cherokee.
I like it a lot. there's just not enough space for the two kid seats in the back seat. there's like a mile of cargo space behind those seats. I wish I could move them back into that.

Your issues with the vehicle in no way would be an issue of mine
-
Get a Yukon Denali then when you show up to 'Cats games you can act like you are a new asst coach that is running late and needs to park in the back
-
New Mazda CX-9 (I'm mildly concerned about Mazda rust issues (especially on smaller cars). But if you don't keep cars too long, who cares.
Does it have to be new or is certified pre owned or regular used okay?
-
get the beamer. I know TTHOTUC loves his. Lord knows he's had that thing for decades it seems like.
-
the Volvo is the best of that lot by a pretty good margin
-
The best looking giant SUVs are going to be Volvo, Audi, and maybe a Buick. I think you're on the right track. Sequoia maybe worth a look if you liked the jeepy interior.
This is definitely a type of car that I would get used. You could probably find some trophy wife SUV with 2000 miles on it and save yourself a few grand.
-
i would go with the toyota sequoia that you didn't list.
you listed your #1 requirement as needing more room but then listed a bunch of imports that don't have significantly more room than your jeep.
truth is it's prob time you bite the bullet and by the bus you're trying to avoid: tahoe, suburban, expedition. yikes but at least it will have more room.
-
If room is what you're wanting:
Nissan Armada Platinum
Yukon XL Denali
Cheve Suburban LTZ
-
Used 15 Denali to stay under 65k or new Tahoe LTZ , you will thank me later if you take this advice.
-
Also, get something that has bucket seats in the middle.
-
Acura MDX?
-
vehicles today are too expensive
-
We just bought a Denali from Plaza GMC, I recommend them
The new Pilots are real nice. We would have bought one if the Honda dealers in Omaha didn't suck fat ones.
I second the comment about the bucket seats, with 3 kids (2 in car seats), we love it.

you want to buy my jeep? it's in good shape and has like 65k miles on it. new tires in october. otherwise I'm just going to trade it in and almost certainly get ripped off.
-
Tahoe
-
we don't need like a million feet of additional space, just like 5 inches of additional second row space. I don't want to buy one of the big truck ones.
-

Then I would look hard at a Tahoe or Yukon (unless you consider those to be big truck type). Both have 3rd row and bucket seats I believe. Less expensive than XL or Suburban. Both have nice luxury options for the entire family.
-
Yukon or Tahoe for the leg room.
-
just get a tricked out minivan and get it over with
-
Get a license plate capture cam thing
-
Since you aren't apparently looking for a huge model like a Suburban, I'd throw out the Traversze LTZ/Buick Enclave. We have a Traverse LTZ (sticker mid 40s) and like it a lot. I didn't think I'd ever own a Chevy, but the value is pretty good. We are fully loaded with heated/ventilated seats, heated steering wheel, collission and lane alert, DVD system, etc. We have captains chairs in the second row for better access to the 3rd row seat, which is actually comfortable enough for adults. The Highlander 3rd row was a joke.
-
bmw 5 series model would be my recommendation
-
I had a 2013 Sequoia. Plenty of legroom but not the smoothest ride. My F150 drives much smoother and has about the same leg room in the back seat. It also got terrible gas mileage. My buddy just bought a Lincoln MDX. Smoothest riding SUV I've ever ridden in. And fully loaded. He's 6'5 and 2 kids and has plenty of leg room.

Did not know he was in the "too stupid to get your vehicle into park" group.
-
I don't think you'll get much more space unless you get one of the biggest SUV's. A friend has a Q7 and they're really nice but with 3 rows of seats you don't really get more legroom per row in the back.
-
All this Jeep talk and Google is banner ad'ing the crap out of me with Dodge ads. Greedy ass Mods is our premium subscriptions not enough for you?

Too many miles for me. I bet Slobber will jump all over it tho.
-
I would love that car sd. Would not enjoy paying for it tho

PM sent, but he'll just ignore this one, too.
-
Why can't you just move lil SD to the passenger side to fix that kicking issue (or teach your kid not to be an bad person, but that's none of my business)?
-
Why don't you pay someone to mod the back seats farther back on your current ride?
-
Highlander. 3rd row configuration w bucket seats in the middle. It's a sweet ride.
-
If you can't bring yourself to do the right thing and buy a Denali, the next best option for you is the Mercedes gl450 , would have to be gently used tho
-
Alert, foreign docs drive these benzs and make them smell like a bad armpit, so be sure and turn on all the vents and test.
-
My mom just picked up a Nissan Pathfinder. The back seat can adjust forward and back. It has a bunch of cool tech stuff too. I think they run in the $45k range. I am 6'5" and can sit comfortably in the back. Both of my kids are tall too, and they can sit in the back with me in the front, no prob.
Its pretty great. You should check that out, SD.

are sport utility vehicles supposed to have smooth rides? seems weird. if that's what you're after, just by a minivan.
we just bought a macan, that thing is a beast.
-
I read that the sequoia and armadas are going to be all new for 2017 so if I was going to buy one of those I'd have to wait awhile which will suck. the armadas are going to look exactly like the giant infinitis.
-
lexus gx? personally i hate the look of those giant infinitis and mock the soccer moms that i see driving them.
-
If you can't bring yourself to do the right thing and buy a Denali
I'm not going to buy a gmc, chevy, ford, dodge, or chrysler. should have included that in the initial FAQ.
-
why
-
There are really not many good options, most are going to be too small, that leaves you with sequoia, the Infiniti, Mercedes, Lexus gx, the Toyota and Infiniti do not ride well, the gx is a little mommyish, so that leaves you doing armpit checks on the GL450.
-
Why can't you just move lil SD to the passenger side to fix that kicking issue?
i was gonna say move the children's seats to the cargo area if there's so much room there, but this seems easier.

the Volvo is the best of that lot by a pretty good margin
This. The SF fam bought a 2016 xc90 with the new body style. We enjoy the crap out of it.
-
xc90 is 1 full bees dick larger than your Jeep
-
why
I don't like them
-
I'm going to plant lil sd in the xc90 sometime this week. i went by there over lunch and by my amazing accurate measurement system (using my hand to space out the distance from rear seat to the back of front seat) we are getting about a 3-4" increase in rear seat room. I don't know if that's sufficient or not. the rear seats slide back some so I'm sure that makes the 3rd row super tiny. I drove it too. when you really jam on the gas it goes sufficiently and is quiet. has a giant ipad in the dash and does apple carplay. probably bigger deals to me than they should be.
-
If you don't want a 3rd row but want to maximize the 2 row room what you really want is 4 door fullsize truck but I am pretty sure that isn't in the SD gameplan
After that, a Range Rover will give you the most 2nd row leg room but you will be doing cat27's armpit test on used ones at 65K
My wife won't drive a full size SUV so we are going Explorer Platinum to replace her MDX - It has the most bells & whistles (massaging seats :sdeek:) and the strongest motor in the 'mid size' 3 row suvs outside of $75k X5 with a V8.
-
yeah, I don't want a pickup because I'll never use the back part and would rather have that space inside for like groceries and junk.

The seats go back. Little SFs don't have too may car pals yet so we rarely use the 3rd row. Ample room for 2 car seats in the second row though.
You are going to be extremely disappointed in the car play stuff. I was so excited and it was meh. Still a great car though.
-
-
do you sit way back? I do. if you do is your kid like jammed back there or does he have room to stretch a bit?
-
Rented an XC90 last summer. I liked driving it, but the kids didn't have a lot of room. :dunno:
-
Mercedes GLE
-
Check out the 3rd row (tailgate seating) on this Lincoln. It would be awesome at a drive-in movie if they still had drive-in movies.

-

I don't sit too far back. We do give the car to my in laws and my father in law is a giant. They bring the kids back with both of their legs and feet in tact every time. That is without moving the seats back too.

Are you set on a suv? You can get a awd Acura TL that has tons of leg room in the low 40s

yes, we need (want?) an SUV. when we travel to like KS we have to bring over a billion piles of baby and kid stuff. a trunk won't cut it.

it probably is when you focus on what I need in a vehicle but I'm still not getting one. I'm not going to act super cool like I'm secure enough to drive one as my daily auto. because I'm not. I'd feel like a dork. I'm a big enough person to admit that.

honda civic. she needs optimum gas mileage for her commute. that's why we reserved the tesla. it will be hers to drive if we can actually take delivery before her civic needs to be replaced. I'm usually pick up only but sometimes both or sometimes neither so both vehicles need to have two seats installed at all times. it's near impossible for me to ride in her civic with two kids in the back. because of that my ride will be the Kansas road tripper.
-
The minivan we rented to pak in Stillwater for the game oscar and spradling lost to give the squawks a share of Angel's 'ship was really fun.
I think my buddy in the seattle suburbs had your same criteria and likes whatever he got. I'll see what it is.

How long till SD Jr is in Kindergarten? He will be moving to a booster seat on the passenger side for the car line pickup and drop off

All these egg shaped import suv's look like lifted mini vans anyway

Minivan. Just do it. Lil sd will have tons of friends that will want to hang with him. You will need to be able to take all of these kids in one vehicle with a crap load of booster seats.

I mean, it definitely could cut it. How often do you go to Kansas and how much longer before you can get by with half as much baby stuff? I just think big luxury suv's feel like tahoes with a different badge and luxury sedans feel like luxury sedans.

considering I can fit 2 of these in my center console, they are a lot smaller than a booster seat. They take a little getting the trick of in undoing the belt strap from the red part on one side, but my 6 year old has it figured out after a couple of weeks of me showing him how to do it.
-
I'm just saying the size of booster seats was not a problem that needed to be solved.

it's a woman's job to haul kids around, not a man's. what sd is trying to do is defy the laws of nature by looking cool while doing a woman's job.
there. someone had to say it. so few guys actually try to do what he is doing that no car manufacturer even addresses this wrinkle in the fabric of our universe.
-
Which driver's seat offers the most maneuverability for you to be able to retrieve your cell phone from the front pocket of your pants?
-
Wait, 6yr olds can't ride in a car without extra equipment?
no, they need a booster seat to raise them up so that seat belts work properly, or a device like the mi-fold that instead pulls the belt down into position.
-
don't kids have to ride backwards at some point?
-
I'm pretty sure I didn't have any car equipment past like 2 years old and I'm fine
-
don't kids have to ride backwards at some point?
younger ones. they recommend as long as you can based on the car seat limits, but at least until age 2
-
I'm pretty sure I didn't have any car equipment past like 2 years old and I'm fine
i had none at all. the front bench seat from driver side to passenger side went like this: dad, dad's six pack, me, mom.
of course sometimes i liked to sit in the back seat because the driver side back seat floor had a hole the size of a baseball rusted through it and i could watch the road fly by below me. was fun to grind sticks on the road as we cruised down the highway.
-
My rust hole was in the front passenger foot area
-
My dad didn't own a shitbox with a hole in floor, we stood on the seats with our heads out the sunroof of mom's 73 Tbird unless we were turning left and had to hold the passenger door from opening.

-

My dad's car didn't even have seatbelts when I was a kid. Now kids have to have a booster seat until they are like 85 lbs and/or 4'9" or something which could be upto and passed driving age.... :sdeek:

you can't make children ride in those things until they hit puberty and not expect it to effect their emotional health. i can't believe there aren't people marching in the streets about this.

Yes I sat in the third row (kids seats were installed in the second row) of whatever that thing was and was quite comfy on the way out to the falls.

The Dodge Grand Caravan I rented last year for a trip to Colorado is probably the nicest vehicle I've ever driven/ridden in. That may speak more to my experience riding in fancy cars, but it was really nice all around.
Leathered out, all the amenities, tons of space, a lot of power and pretty tight handling. It felt great driving it. You forget you're in a minivan.
You can get one bossed out for a hair under $40k.

It really explains a lot of the things we are seeing on college campuses.

Late to this party.... I'd go audi q7. Had the q5 and loved it. Their tech is even better now. Have an mdx now and it's great for tailgating and road trips (only reason it was purchased) but it's boring to drive and the tech is meh....it does have a lot of the amenities you are looking for though... vented seats and a nice entertainment package in the back.

not only does a 5 series have enough room in the back for the little steve dave and little stephanie dave, but its also a huge chick magnet.

Sounds like seat kicking will be an issue regardless. I'd spend 25 on a CRV and find a better use for the other 40.

I'm pretty sure he already purchased a new car and just wanted use this thread as a litmus test.

NOPE

MDX has plenty of room to sit all the way back and not get kicked I think... Never had kids in it to test but leaves a lot of leg room in the second row.

Several Cayenne's at the kids' school. Not a fan.

SD, if you aren't going to use one of the best bennies of being a cow farmer and write off $25k on a new Tahoe you should wait for the new Jag suv. The reviews say it is very roomy

A lot of SUVs are just absolutely ugly.. I honestly like the older body style of the XC90 its a pretty hot piece of tail imo

The right answer here is probably something like go buy a well optioned USED Accord, Camry, Odyssey, Sienna, Pilot, or Highlander with maybe 50K on it, and drive it for 10 years. Meanwhile, invest the difference every month in an index fund or rental property.
But, that isn't a very glamorous approach. I get that. Still, it's the right answer, no way to deny it.

That's certainly the right answer for someone.

I love my minivan so easy and convenient. Chrysler Town and country it's a pretty sweet ride and the stow n go seats are nice if you need to haul larger items. We sometimes fold 2/3 of the back seat down at Christmas to fit all the kids presents in it when visiting the in-laws. still have 3 seats for the kids and can get tons of stuff in the rest.
-
I only currently have two kids and only ever will. So a minivan is an ego thing but also not really needed. Just need more back seat space.
-
Update: none of these POSs have any more back seat room than my POS jeep. Kinda frustrating. Q7 leader in the clubhouse right now with like a tiny baby amount more.
-
sounds like you need something with a 3rd row seat, and then just take the 2nd row seats out. kids won't be kicking your seat, so much more room back there. win win win.
-
I'm listening

When lil sd goes from 5 point to booster this problem will be solved.

Spare the rod...smh.
SD needs an Odyssey so bad. Kills me to watch this, but I can't MAKE him be willing to get the Odyssey. He has to want it on his own.
-
Putting 22's on the Odyssey would make it a lot more bearable SD

Just did a google search for rear legroom. The difference is basically an inch to an inch and a half.
Tesla Model S has rear facing seats. Maybe a death trap for kids? No idea but no way are they kicking the driver seat. You can prob find a used one for 80ish.
-
Tons of back seat leg room + air suspension to raise and lower for loading the kids. Probably need a 2013 to get to your budget.

about a decade ago i spent a weekend riding around a ginormous ranch in new mexico in some sort of land rover/range rover thing. it's the most like a man i've ever felt in my life (sorry for not posting in the right thread).

We looked very hard at the Range Rovers. I talked with a guy who is a partner in a dealership and said they are cool but have lots of maintenance issues. Bought a 4WD loaded Tahoe instead.

Get an ES350. More legroom, more comfortable, better mileage, cheaper. You don't need to take a full minivan's worth of crap to Kansas twice a year.

The minivan we rented to pak in Stillwater for the game oscar and spradling lost to give the squawks a share of Angel's 'ship was really fun.
I think my buddy in the seattle suburbs had your same criteria and likes whatever he got. I'll see what it is.
Yes I sat in the third row (kids seats were installed in the second row) of whatever that thing was and was quite comfy on the way out to the falls.
It's an infiniti qx60.

I priced a few on Craigslist last night. Some good deals on those Touring editions. The second row swivels to face backward and you can put a little table up for playing cards on road trips!
For half the cost of a Yukon/Tahoe you get more cargo space, better seating, and all the towing capacity you'd ever need. They truly are a miracle of North American design and Japanese engineering.
-
I would totally purchase and drive a minivan with zero shame, if I had the need to haul a bunch of stuff around.

I remember as a kid we had one of those dodge ram vans that probably got around 8mpg.. had that airplane interior tube lighting inside, curtains, backseat would fold down flat, middle seats would lay all the way back.. the works. Was amazing taking that thing on road trips..
side note when I was small/young enough my mom locked the keys in it and the back glass could slide if it wasn't locked and they were able to put me in through that glass to get the keys. stud moment

exactly my life, except there was a little window/vent on the ceiling towards the back of the van. it opened with a handcrank and had a tiny little fan in it. I was pretty small and super skinny. we once locked outselves out of it at oceans of fun and I said, I bet I can crawl through that thing. nobody thought I could but I did.

Man. Now I really want a van.

Good, good, hopefully she's going old school on this.
-
I'd also like to add that I really hope that Mrs. SD is successful in this coaching up endeavor, because I'd hate to (but would have to) start a thread about excuses for why the SD's can't teach the little SD's not to kick the back of the car seat. I'd be embarrassed (but would do it anyway) if it was a thread that had to be edited like "Excuses as to why mom and dad SD can't teach the little SD's to not kick the back of the car seat

A loaded Honda Accord is THE BEST value/reliability/luxury options combo out there in sedans. No doubt in my mind.
The Acura TL is just a bit fancier Accord. I have an RL, which is a little bit more old manish and fancier, that I bought used, but I was shopping for a TL. Just found a good deal.
They changed the naming convention recently and added an "X" to the end. There is a lower middle ILX which is a fancy Honda Civic, essentially. Still a nice car.

one downside to all used Honda/Acura is the $1k ish timing belt they need around 100k miles. They are all interference motors and the possibility of a ruined engine exists if the belt fails. This can also be true for some other brands but Toyota/Lexus for example are all chains.

Good point. I might end up buying another one of those for our Odyssey. This rascal has 160K+ on it.

Driving a Ford Expedition EL XLT this week for a vacation rental. Little SD couldn't kick these front seats. Plenty of legroom for the youngster. Fits in the budget at $62K with leather and 4x4.

Wanting to buy a large SUV and then eliminating the company that makes the best large SUV (GM) seems pretty dumb
Expeditions are nice too but uglier

The main thin I don't want is a large truck suv. I've said this a ton already but I want a medium sized one with like 6" more back seat room.

The problem here is that I'm pretty sure it's impossible without eliminating almost all storage

I have tons of unused storage in my jeep. Like enough for 16 bags of mulch.

How often do you road trip back to KS? Renting a van beats putting miles on your own luxury sled and you can write off the rental as GE's sole owner

What about ditching the new and getting a restored station wagon from the 60's?
