Title: watering your grass or whatever
Post by: steve dave on June 09, 2016, 12:52:04 PM
well, it's about as hot as the surface of the sun today and it hasn't rained for over half an hour so I'm going to fire up my sprinklers. normally I pay some guy to come do it and set them up and junk. this year though, all me. I'm just going to assume they still point in the right direction and that the timers are all still saved from last year and switch it to "ON". Thoughts?

If after a few hours you still don't see any water coming out you might want to call that guy.  If you see water... you are done.  Oh, if the water never shuts off also call that guy.

Mine have been on for months even though we've been getting quite a bit of rain in Texas this year.

Mine were un-winterized at the end of March.  Haven't used them much.

You have to winterize irrigation? Oh man.

I pay someone to blow them out every year, so sure.  It's fine and doesn't cost me much.

There's a guy in my neighborhood who has way too much time and care on his hands.  He comes around every so often setting up group buys for like winterizing sprinklers and verticut/aerate/overseeding and pest control.  He has always "got a guy."  Former salesman and I think he likes the hustle.  Anyway his guy comes in an knocks out like 8 houses in one day boom boom boom for pretty cheap.

I always read that the key to watering is "deep but infrequent" - like twice a week but really soak it. After a few years of trying this method, I suspect it may be bullshit. I mean, it's probably good advice if you want a healthy, natural lawn. But I want an unnaturally-green-all-summer-golf-course-style lawn. I hear that watering too often leads to a shallow root system, which isn't sustainable unless you plan to keep watering a lot. That's fine. I'm on a well. I'm still going to water in the morning so it dries during the day to avoid fungus and stuff, but otherwise I'm draining the aquifer. We'll see how this goes.

Water every other day. Unless you are growing grass on a USGA green (sand).

Protip- water your zones for like only ten minutes each but then run it through twice. Allows the zones to soak up and avoid run off.

That is a good idea. Not sure if I can do that with my controller. It is a really old shitty controller. The contacts have started going bad on it. I'm looking to replace it with something I can control from my phone. Ideas?

Is this another one of those times where everyone acts like they never read what I write on this blog? It's not like I haven't said this every summer since 2012. Search it for yourself, that function sucks.

Weathermatic Smartline SL800?  I think the battery might be dead, not sure.  It is "on" and I can see the date and time and change settings and stuff, but nothing happens when I try to run "test" mode.

SD, no need to pay someone to charge your system in the spring, just be sure to slowly turn on the valve, don't just slam it open.

I bought a new house and couldn't figure out the water heater thermostat.  I basically paid $80 for some guy to spend 5 minutes explaining it to me and thinking I was an idiot.  You'll enjoy the feeling KK.
