A couple years ago I decided to return to change careers and go back to school. After picking up a new Bachelors degree from Wichita State ( :blah:) I'm moving on to pursue a Masters at UT-Arlington. Other than a couple short trips to Dallas I know almost nothing of the area. I know there's a few TexasCats living in that area and I'm looking for suggestions. Places to visit, good bars/clubs/breweries/restaurants, entertainment venues, etc. Since I'm trying to pay for out of state tuition cheaper options are greatly appreciated but all opinions are helpful. Also, since there is a Mrs. joda good date ideas are helpful also.

Financial aid and such, but yes

If that's where I'm thinking it's probably a little far away from the college to be living, but if I drink lots of Deep Eddy's does that make up for it?

School has a gym, don't know if it's any good at all, but probably will be what I use with my starting out budget.

Kind of required to get anywhere in my chosen profession

Yea, so I've been told. Hoping for somewhere between the campus and Jerrys World

I mean, if you're square in the middle of DFW then you have access to almost anything you'd want to do (as long as you're willing to drive at least 30-45 minutes to get there). Not very familiar with Arlington specifically, though. The area around Jerry world is kind of a dump.
-
Trinity Groves and Bishop Arts are on the west side of Dallas and are pretty cool areas. People seem to like the zoo and stockyards in Ft. Worth. You have two big interstates running almost parallel between Dallas and Fort Worth which I think run about the same (good and bad).

Watch out for street signs/poles.

do not do this! Horrible people! :fatty:

i lived in ARL pretty close to JerryWorld from 09-11. There wasn't really anything around there, but it's probably built up now. Sherlocks is great people watching.
Grapevine would be a good choice, but it is a hike; However 360 is your friend for the mid-cities and cuts from DFW to Arlington. I would live in Hurst, Euless, or Bedford, maybe even dt Ft Worth. Unless you're looking at the Dallas side, then just pick a spot on the map.
Not sure if it's still the case, but keep your out of state tag as long as you can and use the Tollways. They won't (didn't) bill out of state vehicles.

I live in the mid-cities. For UTA your best bet is Arlington itself or the mid cities probably. Traffic can suck but it's not horrible for a city as large as it is. From the mid cities and Arlington you can be in downtown Dallas or FW in 30 minutes. A lot of stuff to do in both places. Not a sexy place to go visit but a very nice city to live in. Good infrastructure, tons to do, great food everywhere and cheap to live in.
Good 'straunts:
- Mi Dia
- Rodeo Goat
- 18th and Vine (KC BBQ)
- Swiss Pastry Shop
- Bobs steak and chop house
Honestly there are hundreds. Just use Yelp
Neat things to do
- dealey plaza/6th floor museum
- FW stockyards
- FW concerts on the trinity (float in an inner tube on River and pak to low-end bands for free)
- Dallas arboretum
- FW zoo (top tier nationally)
- FW botanical gardens
- Stars games at AAC
- go to dfw founders plaza and watch planes take off (in order to enjoy this you must be a huge dork like me)
- see something at Jerry world just to go inside
- west 7th in FW for bars and to pretend like you're in college with TCU kids
- magnolia st in FW for good food and a few bars too
- deep ellum in Dallas for indie concerts and hipstery stuff
- uptown for wearing affliction shirts and taking advantage of women
- happiest hour for amazing elite patio drinking
Arlington
- honestly it kind of sucks but it's nice too. kinda weird.
- six flags
- stadiums
- ???
- Babes for chicken
- redneck heaven for terrible food, great people watching
Retrain yourself to think of 30-45 minutes as a short drive and you'll be much happier
There is no public transportation in Arlington. If you don't have a car you will die.
Most people that grow up in Kansas, myself included, tend to like FW more since its smaller and more normal, but Dallas is a lot of fun too.
Welcome

Oh and get a toll tag. Will save you 50% on our huge number of toll roads and you can use it to pay for airport parking too.

Prob would have mentioned but after 5 'Straunts I realized how dumb it is to list the hundreds of good places to eat in this massive city

There's probably like 50-100 whataburgers in the metro

Yeah I can't sit here and name every whata in town. It's inefficient.

The whataburger near twin peaks in grapevine is top notch

I'd say probably closer to 200-250.
Arlington sucks but if you're going to UTA, then you want to live there.
Midcities suck. Traffic from there to Arlington is going to suck for the foreseeable future with all the planned 360 work.
Exurbs suck (Plano, Frisco, any of the other generically named ones too).
Dallas is cool. Fort Worth is cool.
Learn to love sitting in traffic. There's been so many people moving here that it sucks no matter where you go.

You can get from the mid cities to Arlington pretty easily down 157, 360 or 820 depending on time of day
Weirdos who hate suburbs are my fave
-
I would not live anywhere but Arlington if I was going to school at UTA. Unless I had kids and didn't want therm going to a shitty Arlington school. Then I'd probably lived in Mansfield or somewhere like that.

yes in general in a huge American megacity it's a good idea to live close by whatever you do every day

Pretty easily=any time other than 7 AM-10AM or 3PM-7PM Monday through Friday or anytime there isn't anything going on a Cowboys stadium.
So, yea, pretty easily if you never travel during normal traveling times.

Hey everyone, been a little over a year since I moved and thought I'd update this a little.
First off, Arlington has a ton of trees, like even if I hadn't seen a post claiming there were no trees I'd still be like, "holy crap, that's a lot of trees".
I haven't had the time to explore as much as I'd like but here's some basic impressions. Arlington isn't too bad to live in. I got an apartment up a little north of Jerry World and can usually make it to campus in 15 minutes or less and really close to I30 if I need to go anywhere. As some mentioned, not a lot to do here other than the Cowboys, Rangers, and UTA athletics but pretty easy trip to Dallas, Ft Worth or any of the other Mid Cities. It's obvious they're trying to build up the area around Jerry World into more of a destination but still have a long ways to go.
I've enjoyed Ft Worth, pretty cool mix of historical and modern, and whoever suggested Rodeo Goat, thanks, really enjoyed that place. Don't recommend if you hate the smell of cow, but really good burgers. On the Dallas side I haven't been able to make it over there as much. Deep Ellum was cool and ate somewhere over there that I don't remember the name of that was really good.
Traffic kind of sucks but it's a big city so not unexpected. 820 around the Arlington/Ft Worth border is terrible. Avoid at all costs. I30 can be bad, but outside of the busiest part of rush hour usually moves at least ok. Haven't had many issues with 360 but haven't taken it much during high traffic times. 157 can be a shitshow, but that's more about people being idiot drivers than anything.

I've heard lots of good things about the palisades and hidden hills areas
