The standing president at Kansas State University is moving to the Pacific Northwest.
Schulz
Schulz
Friday, The Daily Evergreen, the student newspaper of Washington State University, reported from a Board of Regents meeting in Richland, Wash., that Kirk Schulz will be the new president at WSU.
Schulz was one of the three finalists for the position and received an unanimous vote. Washington State is a public research university that operates on four campuses across the state and competes in the PAC 12 athletic conference.
Schulz succeeds Elson Floyd, who lost his battle to cancer last June.
Schulz became the 13th president of K-State in February of 2009 after John Wefald announced his retirement. Since then, Schulz has worked toward the vision of having K-State become a Top 50 research university by 2025. Schulz also currently serves on the NCAA Board of Governors.
Dr. Noel Schulz, the wife of the outgoing president, currently serves as an associate dean of graduate programs in K-State’s college of engineering.
KMAN will continue to bring you updates on the situation as they become available.

Will this be the best combo fanning season ever? Probably!!!!!!
What does this say about the 2020 thing?
How many resumes has Currie pumped out this morning?
Also, would be great if we ended up with The Pirate as our OC or something due to this.

When you are getting a little better every day since 1989, it's pretty hard to get beaten by a couple guys who don't even know how to twitter.

If oscar was smart, he would go ahead and apply for some decent jobs that don't like to hire two time fired losers but are ok with taking a flyer on a one time fired guy.

A message from President Schulz
By President Kirk Schulz
K-State Faculty, Staff, and Students,
Earlier today, I accepted an offer to serve as the next President of Washington State University.
I will continue to serve as K-State President through mid-May, and will transition to Washington State in mid-June. The Kansas Board of Regents will conduct a search for an Interim President as soon as possible.
Noel and I have thoroughly enjoyed our 7 years at Kansas State — it has been an exciting time to be a Wildcat and a part of the K-State Family. Being part of transforming our multiple campuses has been the highlight of my career in higher education.
I will continue to communicate monthly with the K-State community with Letters to Campus as we finish up the 2016 Spring Semester.
With Purple Pride,
Kirk

Hope he takes Currie with him.

Agreed. for all the athletics crap he was taking, he was doing well with this 2025 and other advancements.

why would 2025 be a reason he is leaving?

You gotta think Brownback and the KSLeg destroying higher ed has to be a huge issue. This is right on the heels of a huge call back, even worse than a budget cut, and no real support for his plans. Hell even our federal leaders have hurt campus innovations like NBAF.

Probably state legislature and 2025.
If so, then him leaving is certainly not a good sign of things to come for KSU. Well I suppose for those who see the University as more than a minor league sports program.

Kirk was starting to annoy me at the end, but big picture I think he did a lot of very good things. I worry about trying to hire a University President in this environment

Doesn't he know we have the #ksleg in our back pocket?
-
I see it as a minor league sports program and I'm ecstatic.
-
yeah how does this look good. It would be one thing if he went to a school with a significantly superior academic reputation or larger student body. But he didn't.

That's true. WSU ain't Stanford.

I also wonder if the gun policy influenced his decision.

why would 2025 be a reason he is leaving?
because in 2025 K-State won't be anywhere near a top 50 public research institution despite some small progress toward some of the benchmarks

Promote Bosco. By the time the kids in grade school now reach college age, they won't even be able to do basic addition, so it doesn't really matter.

Yeah, I mean it would take a miracle worker to operate in this environment going forward and keep the university healthy. He and Currie are absolute fundraising studs. Particularly Kirk. K-State is essentially a private institution at this point from a funding perspective.

no, but the state legislature isn't helping. They make his job much harder when they force call backs (actually return money the quarter in a FY) on money and constant cuts. He is essentially a fundraiser (as are most university presidents). In addition, the potential for campus carry and the absurd amount of headaches and controversy that will go with it is not fun.
I think the campus and state climate are very bad right now and most of that has nothing to do with him. People are worried about the funding. He had been hoping to get the Virginia Tech job, when he didn't get that he still wanted to move on as things got worse.
-
2 or 3 yrs ago one of them commented that at that time KSU was something like 95% private funding and if the trend at that time continued for another 5yrs, KSU would be fully private funded. He obvsly wasn't saying it would ever get there, he was commenting on how quickly the private funding side had increased out of necessity.
Brownback just cut another 17Mill from the unis this quarter and next year's deficit is still looming. We don't even have a court-acceptable funding plan in place for July 1st and I don't think anyone was even working on it until last week, supposedly. Evidently, it usually takes most of the year's session to sort one out.
So, state chaos is def a good reason to believe he left, imo.

Clams, I need you to sit down. The truth is that Kirk was Darth Vader and Currie the incompetent dude that Darth chokes before he blows up Alderaan (Frank).

These concerns are not illegitimate, but K-State won't continue to be underfunded longterm. Even Kansans have a limit to the consequences they are willing to endure in the name of political idealism. Within the next decade, funding levels will be more in line with national averages. It's a temporary concern. Also, let's not pretend like Schulz and Currie are the only two human beings capable of raising funds. They did not make lateral moves to get here, even though they may make lateral moves to get out. There will still be some killer fundraisers looking for a promotion, that are also willing to deal with the constraints presented by temporarily low levels of public funding from our state legislature. It's true that we could hire the wrong people, and a less than ideal political atmosphere could exacerbate the effect of that hire. It's also true that we're very capable of making a good hire, maybe even bringing on someone that has vision, fundraising capabilities, and understands the cultural landscape of K-State better than their predecessor. To pretend that we are necessarily doomed is just incorrect.

And I could very well see it as an issue when 70% of employees say no, I believe the majority of students don't want it (need to double check), and the legislature still doesn't allow him to control his campus with a very reasonable campus gun policy.
-
What makes you think KS will make corrective changes in 10 yrs? the last 10 yrs? No way. Sure brownback is massively unpopular, but he was re-elected one yr ago and though ppl may be hating on him, the sentiments that put him in office twice now are still very much so alive and well.
I won't believe anything will change until I see more moderates elected for a term or two.

I think you are underplaying the fundamental damage these right wing governments are doing to their state institutions. Between Louisiana, Wisconsin, and Kansas we have a situation where we are creating real, lasting damage to the structures of these universities and, more profoundly, their reputations and legacies.

There is zero way funding levels for BOR schools get back to 1990's levels. They will rise, but we are living in a new normal at a much lower baseline.
Also, until the BOR kicks out Emporia State, Pitt State, Ft Hays State and Washburn funding levels will never look like they should for a state of our size and population. We will always be looking for out of state, international and private fundraising to make up for the huge short fall.
Those second tier schools will always remain part of the BOR because they are regionally important and welcome to politics, but the system's problems are being brought in to sharper and sharper relief because of the budget crunch. If it was Kansas, Kansas State and Wichita State to support it would be bad enough, but we are talking about a bloated system running on fumes in a small state.

Most state university systems won't see funding again like they did in the 90s. That doesn't mean that they are all doomed. There are solutions out there. It requires coming back from the edge of the ideological precipice, but I think Kansans are at that point now. Ripe opportunity for a moderate governor to come in next term and be hailed as a savior, which would precipitate more moderate politics in the state going forward. Situations have fundamentally changed, but I don't think they've changed in such a way as to make K-State unviable as a competitive state university...at this point.

Just a reminder for a lot of dumbasses in this thread claiming this was a "lateral" move or that the financial situation in ks is fine. With the obvious qualifier that this salary is obscene, it bears mentioning.

I've gathered while up here that Wazzu's last pres was beloved.
From wiki:
E-Flo[edit]
Floyd was often referred to as “E-Flo” for his approachable style with students. The nickname was given to him originally by the University of Missouri student newspaper, The Maneater.[8] At WSU, Floyd was known for sitting with students in the student sections of basketball and football games. He gave out his personal cell phone number to any student who asked for it – once famously to an entire group of student reporters at the WSU student newspaper, The Daily Evergreen, during a meeting with them.[9]
Buttons were created by University of Missouri students bearing the phrase “I [heart] E-Flo” in 2005, and a similar version of the “I [heart] E-Flo” buttons were created by students at Washington State University on social media to support Floyd in his fight with cancer. The WSU newspaper, The Daily Evergreen, ran a series of articles with the “I [heart] E-Flo” buttons accompanying each article.[10]
Voluntary pay cut[edit]
On November 21, 2008, Floyd asked the WSU Board of Regents to cut his pay by $100,000 in light of the difficult budget the university was facing.[11] His salary had been increased from $600,000 to $725,000 in August, making his salary $625,000 after the reduction.[12] It is the largest known salary-reduction of a university president. Floyd said he wanted to "lead by example." Two other university presidents gave self-imposed cuts that week as well.[13] On June 16, 2009, Floyd announced an additional 5% cut to his salary along with other executive board members.[citation needed]

I don't know that I'd say he wrote open carry down on his T-chart when he an Noel went to the Olive Garden to hash it out, but he was very critical of open carry, and that is a small part of the bigger politics in the state that he obviously saw as a problem. It's the salary and it's the politics. And also the mean tweets, but not quite as much.

the last 30 years we have had 2 university presidents so it seems weirder for us. Washington State has had 11 in their 125 year history. So you are right, but it is still a huge change.

It's roughly par for the course, we've had 13 (going on 14) in 153. That's an avg. of 11.8 years/prez for us (for 13), it's 11.4 years/prez for them. Seems right.

He should take it now and resign his gov'ship. Seriously. Would sacrifice KSU for the greater good. Also, Sam was a "do whatever it takes to keep frank" Frankite. He would prob be good for the sports progs.

If were to become the President of Kansas State University, I'd be done with KSU forever. I'm not joking in the slightest about that. I'm out.

What if he hired Larry Brown as #AD and we cheated our ass off and won national championships?

I've given it serious consideration. I have some family constraints, so I don't get to make that decision by myself.
I didn't choose to be a Kansan, but I chose to be a K-Stater. If Brownback takes over K-State, I'll choose to not be a K-Stater and be perfectly happy. I mean, I already have degree from KU as well. Maybe I'll get an online degree from Wisconsin or something. I'd have loads of options.
-
Would Sam fire Currie?
-
Would Sam fire Currie?
Oh hell ya

It'll be important for the next pres to go through an orientation in which it's taught what the past presidents did well and didn't do well, and then do all the good stuff.

Pete, don't leave KSU

Kinda bummed the more I think about it. I believe Schulz was ultimately good for ksu state and could've done some really phenomenal things if he were here for a few decades. I hated what athletics have become over the last few years, but I still place the majority of that blame on Currie, unlike most here, who I think assume all of Currie's babysitting was mandated by Schulz. Kirk was a total dork on Twitter but I appreciated his role in Conference Armageddon, and I wish him well at Wazzu. Goodnight, Sweet Prince (of Persia).

This is where I'm at. Schulz overall was a good dude who did good things for K-State.

he was a disgrace to his names. may he rot on the palouse.

What a terrible day to miss out on gE. Schulz was probably good for academics, but nobody really gaf about academics.

Just think: he'll go from living eight miles from Ogden to living eight miles from the Ogden of stades (Kibbie Dome).

I care about academics but it doesn't have to be an either or proposition. Cheating and scandals are just the price you pay to be good at sports.

Context.
Jon Wefald came to KState from the position of Chancellor of the six state university system of Minnesota.
As University President of Kansas State, Wefald created more than 2,000,000 square feet of new buildings, private giving increased from $6 million a year to nearly $100 million a year, research funding increased from $18 million to $110 million a year, enrollment increased from 17,000 to 23,000, and, finally, K-State students won 125 Rhodes, Marshall, Truman, Goldwater, and Udall Scholarships from 1986 to 2008, which was more than any public university in America.
-
So you're saying Pres Schulz didn't do crap? :surprised:
-
Wefald being a good president doesn't make Schulz any less of a president.
Please define "nearly $100 million". Fundraising the past 7 years has dwarfed anything that happened from 1986-2009.

wefald was a crap president though

"He said the candidates were told at the outset that their names wouldn’t be revealed publicly unless they accepted the job. Promising confidentiality meant WSU could attract candidates who did not want it known that they were job-shopping, Worthy said."
Nice "family." Good to know he actively took part in a job search that was designed to keep us in the dark.

I don't want to crap on anyone's parade, thats why im saying this in the BWW thread. I'm sad about Kirk leaving. Implicitly, his AD standing behind oscar was bad for everyone. This is known. But i do GAF about academics and i thought he had a good plan for the university, complete with lazy river. I hope the next guy keeps the ball rolling but Kirk stood up and said what needs to be said to keep our cats out of the MWC. Having K-state embrace a roll as a high-tech-U is the direction we need to be heading. If we turn into midwest-state-U, we're basically N. Illinois. He did good by us, and i wish him the best.

I agree that he was good did the university as do most, not a controversial stance. Hinting that he kept us out of the MWC or is preventing us from being NIU is melodramatic.

schulz was indeed a master of laughs, gaffs, AND goofs. no doubt he's bringing the hyuck hyuck hyuck to the PNW.

There's no way that the new UP will ever live up to KS's twitter account. He was BITB in that regard.

Hearing some rumors that Brownback is interested in the job. (Not an april fools joke unfortunately).
Would be a strategic exit before the elections to help the GOP in the state legislature races.
-
yeah, he is. obviously his politics is dildos but I bet he'd do alright by us in sports.
-
If he got Kirk's salary, it would be like a 2.5x raise or something. Also, a longer term job, probably. Also also, less of a daily "Hey you're an bad person" interaction with those you represent.
Seems very win/win'ey to me, for him, that is.
-
possibly a complete coincidence (but almost certainly not) almost the entirety of KSU's non Bosco leadership is applying all over academia to get out.

I don't think I could take UPSB.

Kobach will be the next bosco.

"....and we are going to make KU pay for it!"

If we are going to have somebody completely unqualified become university president, I'd rather it be somebody I've never heard of.
-
I would rather John Currie get a lifetime contract than Brownback becoming Pres. I would burn all my purple in the President's front yard
-
If Brownback takes over, I am out. I'll start a book club with Pete or something with my free time
-
OMG, I mean I could almost avoid complete nausea if it were 1000% confirmed that Brownback will want to win at all costs, I'd just throw up a little a few times in my mouth.
-
What is Wefald doing these days? If he is dead I apologize in advance, I really don't know.
-
Who chooses the president? Is it just the board of regents?
-
dnr the other stuff but bosco attended the women's studies advisory board dinner thing last night and appeared to be at a solid 3-3.5 on maybe scotch while (extremely respectfully of course) messing with people at like every table. what a magnificent creature
-
Who chooses the president? Is it just the board of regents?
One of the regents leads a search committee of about 20 people. The regent chairing the committee happens to be from Manhattan. The rest of the committee will be a collection of K-State faculty, students, alumni, and a few Manhattan community representatives. They will review potential candidates, narrow it down to about 3-5 people for on campus interviews, and then recommend one person for the BoR to approve.
The entire process will take a few months, possibly even a year. The BoR will appoint an interim president sometime within the next week or so.

INSIGHT KANSAS: Could K-State court Brownback as next president?
APRIL 7, 2016 BY HAYS POST 7 COMMENTS
Last week, one of Kansas’ most visible and revered leaders, Kansas State University President Kirk Schulz, shook the state up by announcing he was leaving to take the helm at Washington State University. The move makes great sense for Schultz, who had established an excellent record at the helm of the state’s second-largest higher education institution. Washington State will pay Schulz nearly twice his salary, and while Schulz loves K-State there is only so much of a hometown discount anyone would be willing to extend to their paymaster.
That Washington State is paying Schultz so much more is unsurprising to anyone paying attention to states’ budget priorities. Kansas’s legislature has decided that education, whether K-12 or higher education, is a funding priority somewhere between paying dues to the Democratic National Committee and reserving a Tesla Model 3. Washington State, on the other hand, recently committed to increasing higher education support, making for not only a higher salary but a more supportive environment.
Schulz’s departure leaves a big pair of shoes to fill. A national search will be conducted and speculation has already begun as to who might replace him. Considering Kansas’ recent well-earned reputation for hostility to education combined with the relatively low salary will not encourage a strong applicant pool. Perhaps, then, the search committee should keep their focus inside the state.
Who may the Regents pursue? What makes a great university president? Some states have looked to former elected officials. Under former Senator David Boren, the University of Oklahoma has become one of the nation’s most respected pubic higher education institutions. Mitch Daniels, previously the Governor of Indiana, took the helm at Purdue last year and while his tenure has been more controversial than Boren’s his connections in the legislature and negotiation ability are skills greatly valued by higher education regulators.
So Kansas State may look 50 miles east, to the Governor’s mansion, for their next president. Brownback appointed every current Regent, so they are certainly comfortable with his leadership. The Governor is a Kansas State alumnus, and he will be out of a job in another two years. If he wanted to mimic his predecessor, he could even leave early as Kathleen Sebelius did to become U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary. Brownback could claim that the ‘sun is shining in Manhattan’ even on the rare occasions when the football team loses. To grow student enrollment, Brownback could use the same approach he took on taxes, slashing tuition to attract more students. If Governor Brownback’s vision is to be believed, then K-State will go from nearly 25,000 enrollment to 50,000 in a few years. If the promise isn’t delivered, he can point to being re-elected without the same level of job growth in the state as reason why he should keep the spot during his merit review with the Regents.
Furthermore, the legislature would never have to worry about providing Kansas State any regular funding, because it is sitting on a nearly $500 million endowment. Brownback and his allies in the legislature claim that K-12 school districts should accept their state funding cuts and use their reserve funds to make up the shortfall. Brownback could thus lead by example in allocating K-State’s endowment for faculty salaries and everyday operations.
Seriously, there may be an important reason to pursue Brownback as Kansas State University’s next president. After years of comfortably believing that education was a bloated money sink, a few years at the helm would show Brownback just how difficult a job higher education leadership can be. Just as the Ghost of Christmas Past showed Ebenezer Scrooge the error of his ways, taking the helm of K-State could provide the governor some much-needed empathy for the educational needs of his state.
Chapman Rackaway is a Professor of Political Science at Fort Hays State University.
-
i wonder who our other visible and revered leaders are?

oh man. Leach and Kirk are going to have some fun times.
-
I am ready. I love Alaska Airlines. They've treated me really well. They serve a local wine and local beer, part of the complimentary service. Not so much as six in the morning, but at seven in the night is a nice part of that experience. Gonna be a fun ride
-
do they not serve in the morning, or is ol' uptight schulzie refusing to partake?
-
It's not complimentary at any time as far as I know. I got a "complimentary" drink on my way to FattyFest but that was part of buying an exit row seat the day before. I got crown royal.
-
that sonofabitch is stealing drinks and doesn't even realize it.
-
I'm sure it's that, given that WSU pays for it, he only flies first class and does indeed get complimentary booze. And he highlighted the "complimentary" in the same interview in which he dropped a "fiscally responsible."
-
In a way, when your put every life expense on the university credit card, everything is complimentary.
#longbone

I'm assuming this is all just terrible transcribing or is there a chance he actually now talks like wackycat posts?

Bad transcribing. It's at 5:00 of the main video.

Canadian friend of mine has claimed free booze in coach multiple times, but they are us-can flights. That's why I asked you about it.

Fun fact: I don't remember such a conversation. Because booze (paid for).

Alaska Airlines serves a free mai tai in economy just prior to landing in Hawaii. Even better, its regional partners Horizon Air and SkyWest pour free wine and beer on their flights throughout the western United States and Canada.
I'm assuming pullman has one of these and not actually alaska

Yep. Guess schulz IS being fiscally responsible when it comes to binge'n on flights between his campus home and downtown seattle condo.
Daily, direct flights, operated by Horizon Air as Alaska Airlines, fly from Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (SEA) to Pullman-Moscow Regional Airport (PUW) on 76-seat Bombardier Q400 (DH4) aircraft.

Barber is the kicked-out-of-school-1-credit-short-of-graduation football player.
If the WSU Board of Regents and Gov. Inslee don’t act, the Spokane Republican said, he will hire Barber to work in his Olympia office until the American Samoa product can re-enroll. Making no secret of his disappointment in WSU President Kirk Schulz for what he believes is a lack of leadership in handling the case, Baumgartner added that Barber would serve on staff as his point person for fielding every funding request from WSU. He also would assign Barber to review the practices of WSU’s Conduct Board.

The students need to understand that if you can't make it because of the weather, you can't make it. It is the beginning of the term, I'm not sure what the millennials are so scared of. That being said, he couldn't be more flippant and callous about those kids dying if he tried. What a tone deaf, insensitive, dick bag.
-
Those roads heading into Pullman are bad. There was some pretty decent drifting going on two weeks ago. I can't imagine what it's like now with even more snow and ice.
BTW, Pullman is way in the middle of nowhere and seemed extra lame.

Wasn't it a thing for some high demand classes that if you didn't show first day, you got dropped?

Yep, the official statement implied those kids would be alive if they had come back to school from the holidays much earlier or not gone home at all, so blame them. And when you're done blaming them, lol at this gif.

:dunno: I was a journalism student, I didn't have those problems. I'm sure the issue could have been solved by sending the professor an email saying "yo bitch the roads are iced over and I'm stuck in Walla Walla, see ya next week, hoe."

In June 2000, Rawlins returned to Washington State where he served as president until May 21, 2007. Rawlins created some controversy in the WSU community in 2002 when he tried to phase out the popular nickname "Wazzu" from usage. The change proved a firestorm of protest from students and alumni and he relented.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/V._Lane_Rawlins
University President V. Lane Rawlins wants the word purged from T-shirts, coffee mugs and other school-related products on the grounds it is vaguely derogatory and plays to the perception that WSU is a place where booze trumps books.

Not that I really want to defend that dorkstore and his hyper-pc wife.
But Bill Moos created a financial firestorm for WSU athletics, and Schultz was not that far out-of-line in making his life miserable because as far as I can tell Moos had no real plan to fix it besides shrug his shoulders and say the Pac-12 Network pay out wasn't what was expected.
WSU athletics is borrowing $8-10 million . . . A YEAR . . . from the university to balance their budget. Because Moos built a $130 million in new football facilities and put it all on the credit card.
But we can  at Schulz because, and to paraphrase Sheriff Buford T. Justice, K-State athletics financial hiccup at the beginning of Kirk's tenure was "chicken crap compared to what that dude is doin".
-
Although he said Currie wouldn't be a candidate for the AD job a few days ago, The Animal needs John Currie.

It must've been a hell of an awkward planning session given that the contingency was losing to the arch-rival. At least with all the goofy greenshirts and ropes things that went on in the fOOD, they were prepared in contemplation of a W.
