Title: Lenexa things
Post by: mocat on February 23, 2016, 01:29:53 PM
first things first: where does the name Lenexa come from? when i was a kid i thought it was related to Lexus. is this accurate? i have never heard otherwise

What's up with this Arris Pizza in Lenexa? It's from the weirdo parts of Missouri so I'm skeptical, but on the other hand the reviews are good. It's Greek Pizza which I've never had, but I do like gyros.

Tried it 2 weeks ago. This place was so bad. The cheesiness was good but the crust was just awful

Mrs mocat loves all pizza, but she told me arris was disgusting, like nothing she'd ever encountered before

this is all I need to know to never try it because Mrs. Mocat is a cool cat.

when i worked in Lenexa (Thermo Fisher), I wouuld Holy Land Cafe-it for lunch.  :lick:
$1 beers during Royals games at Arris Pizza

meatsauce you have some lenexplaining ( :Keke: ) to do regarding Arris pizza

Quote
n 1857, twelve years before the town of Lenexa was platted, James Butler Hickok staked a claim on 160 acres (0.65 km2) at what is now the corner of 83rd and Clare Road.[7]At about the same time, a census of the Shawnee Indians living in the area was being taken. One of the residents was listed as "Na-Nex-Se Blackhoof," the widow of Chief Blackhoof, who was the second signer of the 1854 treaty that ceded 1,600,000 acres (6,500 km2) of the Kansas Shawnee Indian reservation to the U.S. government. A few miles east in Westport, Missouri, was the start of the Old Santa Fe Trail. It meandered through the southeast part of Lenexa on its way to Santa Fe, New Mexico.

Later, Hickok became a scout for the Free-State Army, a sharpshooter and eventually, Wild Bill Hickok. In 1865, shortly before Na-Nex-Se died, the Kansas and Neosho Valley Railroad was organized to take advantage of favorable new land laws. It later changed its name to Missouri River, Ft. Scott and Gulf Railroad, and in 1869 purchased a right-of-way from C.A. Bradshaw with the stipulation that the railroad build a depot on the property. Bradshaw then sold 10.5 acres (42,000 m2) to Octave Chanute, a railroad civil engineer, who platted a town in 1869. Legend states that the town was first proposed to be named 'Bradshaw', but he modestly refused and the name "Lenexa," a derivation of the name Na-Nex-Se, was adopted.

Lenexa anecdote! I ate at a Middle Eastern buffet restaurant in a strip mall on 87th. It was pretty good but we were like like the only people there. Near the end of my meal the big middle aged Iranian chef/owner came out of the back and said super aggressively "YOU LIKE THIS FOOD?" like an interrogation and I was like "uh, yeah I do like it. Thank you."
Then he said "YOU ARE MY CUSTOMER NOW. YOU WILL COME BACK." and was like "of course!" Then again after I paid and was walking out the door he popped out of the kitchen to remind me again "YOU ARE MY CUSTOMER NOW".

I never went back because I did not live in lenexa or KC at all. I hope he's OK.

There's a historic theater nearby.  Most of the stuff there is "classier" than usual acts and venues I go to.

http://www.stgpresents.org/paramount

Recently, they've been advertising that WWE NXT will be there.  No idea how WWE and The Paramount got matched up or how wrestling would even work in a theater that has all the seats facing a stage, but whatever.

http://www.stgpresents.org/tickets/alphabetical/eventdetail/2650/27/nxt-live

Cut to when I recently googled one of the people they're advertising for this, and look what wikipedia revealed:

Quote
Place of birth:   Lenexa, Kansas

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Baron_Corbin

Unfortunately, for wwe purposes, he apparently shuns lenexa in favor of being from "kansas city."

Quote
Ring name(s)   Baron Corbin
Billed height   6 ft 8 in (2.03 m)[3]
Billed weight   275 lb (125 kg)[3]
Billed from   Kansas City[3]
Trained by   WWE Performance Center
Debut   May 8, 2013

One of your own is a full-fledged wwe'r and may soon be trashing our historically-preserved theater!

THE "LONE WOLF" IS FROM LENEXA?!?!  He just won the Battle Royal at wrestlemania is getting "called up" to the big time.   He's supposed to be the next great dastardly heel.

Reading his wiki, he's 31, which is a older than I thought.  I can't decide whether to be happy he's from Lenexa or be disgusted that he's "from" KC.

Also, NXT is awesome.  Go and watch Shinsuke Nakamura if he's gonna be there.

I'd only go if I could pak w/winters in the front row again and I don't even know how there could be a front row at this place.  I'm envisioning the ring up on a stage and everyone watching it like it's a play.

What an odd tour.  Exactly one week before coming here, they're in itch manhattan.  http://www.wwe.com/shows/wwenxt/article/nxt-live-tour-kansas-oklahoma-washington-oregon-may-2016

Give me an insidery lenexa thing I should say to the lone wolf if they're out doing tourist stuff during the day and I run into him.

Yeah.  For anyone else, I'll ask how they liked the scheme the previous week.  Surely that's where they'll carb-load before the big event at the bicentennial center, right?

Not really, it's a shawnee address.  The 66214 area code is both shawnee and OP and google defaults to OP for all addresses in that zip code for some reason.

What's the deal with a sheriff's office (at least JoCo's)?  Do they only have rural jurisdiction or something?

no, their jurisdiction is the entire county.  but given that the incorporated areas have their own police forces, they spend a lot of time in rural areas.

What was going on at Sar-Ko-Par Park tonight?  Wanted to get a few 5 minute miles in while it was still nice and there were masses of people in a bunch of different groups.  Everyone was just looking at their phone so I didn’t know if it was Pokémon Go or what.

I was about a mile and a half into my run(7min 32 seconds at this point) and all the pods started moving.  Each pod migrated from their original spot to a new spot across the park.  I had to dip duck dive and dodge my way around because I was running so fast past them.

By now I’m at the 3.5 mile mark at around 13 min flat(I stopped for about 2 min to smash a clif bar).  The pods start moving again.  By the time I finish mile number 5(23 min 36 second not bad but not my best) they started migrated again.  Anyway, does anyone know what was going on?

When I was in HS there were still farms in that area and I'm not even a super old.

It amazes me too. Mrs SF and I used to take our dog to the park out there a few years after college. Basically nothing. Years later and my kid plays at 3 and 2 and I was like, holy crap, where did all of this come from?

We are old balls now and it sucks.
