Title: Three reasonable expectations for next Wednesday
Post by: Canary on January 30, 2016, 06:00:11 PM
I'd like to hear some predictions/expectations for the game in Lawrence this coming Wednesday.
My three:
1. Two of our guys will have two fouls each by the under-16 timeout.
2. We will have at least a seven minute drought in scoring.
3. We will go 2/18 from beyond the arc.

I'm not usually pessimistic, but we play terribly in Lawrence every year.

I didn't use "this Wednesday". I used this coming Wednesday, which is the next Wednesday.  But I may be wrong.

I will be cussing a lot about the officials.

Be down by 12 before the 15 minute mark. Make a little run and be within 5, then Be down by 8-10 at half. Come out with a run, and ultimately end up losing by 15 plus.

It was basically a poor follow up on my part. I should have used the same terminology in title and text. But I'm not going back in to change it. It's been a nice side convo to this thread for me.

The Cats will lose by one. *

* The blizzard moves more slowly than expected and dumps more than a foot of snow on Manhattan Tuesday. The Cats can't travel to Lawrence, so we agree to just forfeit the game 1-0.

Look, these games are usually over at halftime. Even when Wooly somehow beat them, it was bleak at half time. Even the best K-State I've ever seen got destroyed in Lawrence. The halftime score was reasonable, but we all knew we weren't winning that game.

Halftime scores from the last 10 years:

Year   KSU   KU
2015   17   33
2014   28   45
2013   29   47
2012   20   35
2011   20   37
2010   38   45
2009   24   37
2008   29   41
2007   35   47
2006   18   26

At least with the hard fought game last night, maybe that will spot us like 10 points at half or something. Bottom dweller team, etc.

2008   29   41
2007   35   47
2006   18   26

avg score halftime score: 26 - 39

also, for grins, over the same time period, the avg final score in Lawrence is 63 - 80

I think Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives is on the Food Network (kind of a guilty pleasure of mine).  Also, on Spike TV there's I, Robot (not great but is at least exciting).  The Purge is on FX (not really a fan, but some might be).  Castle is on TNT (apparently people like this show).  The Bourne Supremacy is on AMC (again, not great, but at least entertaining).

There's always Netflix - I mean, Narcos should be watched by anyone who has functioning eyeballs.

See if you can dig up quotes about what he said about Wooly teams

Quote
What are they, 6-9 in the conference They could easily be 9-6 or 10-5. They are a good basketball team. Jim (Wooldridge) has done a great job with them and it will be a very difficult game for us.

Quote
Bill Self bristled Friday when a reporter suggested that Kansas State didn't "look like a good basketball team" against Nebraska on Wednesday night.

"Everybody has bad games," Self, Kansas University's basketball coach, said, commenting on K-State's 57-42 home loss, in which the Wildcats hit just 23.4 percent of their shots. "We've looked like crap more than once, too."

Self on Friday was out to praise, not bury, Jim Wooldridge's Wildcats, who went 9-2 in the preseason before also falling, 72-70, in their Big 12 Conference opener at Iowa State.

"I thought they looked good in Ames," said Self, whose Jayhawks meet K-State at 12:45 p.m. today in Allen Fieldhouse. "Jim will have his guys fired up and ready to play regardless of the last performance. That's the great thing about basketball. You don't have to wait a week to play. After watching the Nebraska tape ... Nebraska played well. K-State couldn't buy a basket. It doesn't take away the fact they are a good team that had a bad day."

Quote
From a coach's perspective, if I watched Jim Wooldridge's team or Rick Barnes' team, it makes a difference. Your job is based on how you do with the potential that you have. That's why I think Jim is a great coach. I think Kansas State is one of the best four teams in our league in the last half of the Big 12 season.

Certainly they'll have 2 guys go off for 80% beyond the arc, just like they have done for years with Boshee, who I wish would have had an aneurysm  in game, or Miles, or Collins or take your pick.  oscar won't have any answers and we'll lose by 15-18 after trailing by 20+.

Budke will score 30 and Cats still lose by 15

If KU wins by less than 25 it is because they have a Kentucky hangover or just lose interest due to our shitiness.

He was pretty terrible as a coach. 6 years at P5 school with an NIT bubble as your best achievement is really bad. His record is much more like Kim Anderson's than it is oscar's.

This was kind of hinted at in the other thread but when making a favorable oscar comparison to Wooly, the state of the programs both took over is absolutely noteworthy. I don't think there is any doubt at all that Wooly left the program better than what was given to him. It isn't much but facts is facts.

I've scheduled the chat events w/the assumption the game will be out of reach w/8 minutes left in the 1st half and both teams effectively milking the clock and nothing interesting happening (in the game) thereafter.

Never been able to bring myself to feel joy from a KU win over KState. I'm not sure I can this time, but I am invested in such a result.

We will not succeed under oscar. We need to move on. Sooner is better than later.

In order for that to happen, according to AD John Currie's criteria established in his evaluation of WBB coach Deb Patterson, oscar needs to meet her "trajectory."  Patterson had 4 consecutive worsening losing seasons. That was Currie's reason for firing her. oscar has had 3 worsening losing seasons. He needs 5 wins since Dec. 31 to avoid "achieving" 4 straight worsening losing seasons. He has 3 wins since Dec. 31.

We will see...

Kansas State almost certainly locked up its NCAA Tournament bid with its win over TCU, but the fight the Wildcats showed against Kansas -- down their two best players -- may have helped their cause.

I agree it's kind of weird to claim moral victory for any 16 point loss, but that narrative isn't coming from fans or even Weber, it's coming from the press.

We weren't embarrassed.  Brown didn't kick Graham is the groin.  No one got revenge.

Maybe you don't know what a moral victory is? Quote one of the tweets or posts you think you saw. If you were being rational I don't think applying what Cartier posted two years ago is at all applicable to us playing the conference champion and a #1 seed in the NCAA tournament without the best 1-2 combination in the entire conference.
Title: Re: Three reasonable expectations for next Wednesday

It wasn't meant that seriously.  Though I think many see losing to KU by 16 in a game where we "fought hard" as a moral victory.

Looking up tweets is stupid as hell, especially given that Twitter isn't chronological anymore and I can really look up what I saw at 8:30 last night.

I do think that a lot of people are happy with how we played last night, which outside of Mawein, was pretty bad.

Also, I'd for sure take Graham and Svi or Doke over Wade and Brown. So not sure about the "best 1-2 combination".

Also, I like this team. I think they are pretty good. I just don't see reasons for encouragement from last night outside of Mawien maybe being a competent player.

WTF? Of course it was bad, we were missing our two best offensive players, our best defender, and our best rebounder. Mak, Kam, and Ahmad all played over 35 minutes. McGuirl played 21 minutes last night, he had 42 minutes the entire season and only 3 minutes the last month. What exactly were you expecting?

Sure it was bad. It was expected to be bad. Some people seem excited about how we "fought" and "competed". I think that is silly.  I didn't expect greatness, but I won't laud mediocrity.

If MiR's going to ask people to spend the time to go fetch tweets off the internet, he could have the gd decency to actually respond to that and not just breeze past it just because it means he's wrong to at least some extent.

I did address it champ, I addressed the thought of qualifying what happened as a "moral victory" before he even posted the tweets.

My man acting like that game wasn't a loss the second Barry went to the locker room is a complete contrivance, feigning outrage. He used a two year old post to make the point.

Losing by nearly 20 to a down KU team who had their foot at half throttle and then claiming a moral victory was perfect for the sack of crap losers who continue to worship fellow sack of crap loser coach.

Yeah, really don't give a crap how hard they played.

They're supposed to rough ridin' play hard.

Good for mak but they didn't even try to play defense on him either.
