I'm sure some outsiders will try to spin this loss in a negative way, but think of it this way: Paul was REALLY close to winning his Super Bowl. Like, closer than ever. That's got to count for something.

ISU fumbled 4 times in their last 5 offensive possessions, did not try to kneel with 1:30 left (we only had 1 timeout), and let our offense drive 55 yards for a TD on 4 plays.

I rarely have strong feelings about a coach, but Paul seems like some idiot at the bar who doesn't understand football at all and is just super happy when his team is winning and super whiny when they're not.

The fact he has been a HC as long as he has is really pretty amazing.

I am so proud to be a cyclone fan today! Watching the game at hooters in south florida and by the end of the game we had the whole bar rooting for Iowa state. even tho it didnt go our way it is okay! Keep working hard guys! Your love for the game shines more and more everytime I watch you! Yes there are things the coaches and PLAYERS did wrong but you fought the whole game and didnt settle for anything, i Love the calls to try and win it in regulation and i wouldnt have done anything different! P.S Do we still have Blocking recievers? I feel like we played it soft having no TE is some sets but GREAT game and keep working hard it will pay off! Trust in what you are doing!

I just can't get over how Iowa State that is. Its truly a shame that he was overshadowed by Gill and Weiss because Rhodes is amazing inept and I don't think enough people appreciated how terrible he is. He basically road the waves of a halftime speech against a terrible nebraska team for like 6 years

This ESPN commenter is like classic clyoser:

Paul Rhoads sock. Notice how he put emphasis on the PLAYERS.
This also might be tangible evidence of the affect of Stockholm syndrome on a dispersed fanbase.

Quit picking on ISU (for at least this year). They're the closest we're going to get to watching us play in a quality bowl game.

I had another commitment, so I didn't get to watch one second of this live. I followed the end the game on the ESPN app on my phone and I had no idea what was going on. When I heard about it afterward I still didn't believe it. Just ridiculous.

It would be interesting to see one of those charts where the give the probability of each team winning at a given point during this game like they do for basketball. (do they do these for football)?

Traumatized so bad they had to move the starting QB to Middle LB and find a replacement. Yet they're still gonna kick our a** with a converted QB that will probably lead the team in tackles. Wouldn't the be the epitome of irony.

No one here hates isu as much as I do but those uniforms are great. You guys are forgetting how horrific their colors, font, and uniforms generally look. This is the same school who were happy when their uniforms were compared to McDonald's uniforms. This is an amazing improvement, I actually like them.

I always thought their throwback uniforms looked pretty good, and thought they should keep them around a little longer.

However, I think their best look was the USC-ish copy. Not sure why they didn't stick with this combo.

ISU uniforms: A history

Prob mid-80s, woof

Looking very Pitt Statey here in the late 80s early 90s (prob not as good as Pitt St tho).

(https://bloximages.newyork1.vip.townnews.com/omaha.com/content/tncms/assets/v3/editorial/0/15/015f7742-9261-53b5-8f07-301a45d042bd/5973ec400dc9d.image.jpg?resize=1200%2C1277)

Mid 90s, let's turn the cyclone into a bird!

(https://goemaw.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimage.cdnllnwnl.xosnetwork.com%2Fpics33%2F400%2FGM%2FGMUXYSPCCPWFJVO.20160108205710.jpg&hash=a262e33121f6b6a3c4d531567ed03b8cc2091cbc)

Late 90s early 00s, let's keep the bird, but also update the color scheme/ numbers and stuff. These actually look decent for the era. Prob would be better with white numbers on the red unis tho

Unis stayed pretty much the same since, except some rando colors and white helmets sometimes.

AND NOW THIS!!!

Those are mid 80s era.  They had All Big 8, All American players where yellow helmets while everyone else wore red.

Quote
Criner awarded players gold hemets if he thought that they deserved to be considered for the All-Big 8 team. Even the players disliked the idea as the guys with the odd helmets tended to be targets of taunts and extra hits during the games.

Giant nameplates on the chest aren't utilized enough.  I love them every time.

I always liked ISU's drop shadow on the numbers.  They were very "of their time," but I thought they looked great.

Oklahoma's:

I've always had a soft spot for their helmets until the I-State thing.  I liked the yellow with old tornado and the script. I also liked the bird on red.  If they didn't change it so much it'd help make an identity.  I get why they thought they need to change the tornado & bird ones, but the current ones are just so bland now.

I don't like Gary Barta, but I have no idea how he could have done any of this differently.

He could have just not announced that the school was investigating an incident if he wasn't willing or able to say what the incident actually was.

He had local media all up in their crap about it, they found out about the alleged incident before either university did. Are you suggesting that he just ignore the media inquiries? IMO this reeks of a false flag but in this case he didn't know. He had media telling him a member of the marching band got assaulted. BTW, this should have came from the university, he doesn't even oversee the band. The more they looked into it the less they could find, I mean they couldn't even determine that someone had their ribs broken.

To me the real shitheads in this incident are flood aggie fans. Of course instead of disavowing the alleged incident they went into full blown "they do it too" mode. There was some guy who looked to be my age, white Iowan he's probably 22, whining about how it happened to him when he was in the band. So the eff what and why are we hearing about it two decades later?

In true ISU fashion, they blew a chance to win the division, with a 4-4 record, in back to back seasons. Both seasons their kicker missed a field goal to win the division. 2004 it was against KU, in 2005 against Missouri.

January 3, 2020

Dear Cyclone fans,

As we begin 2020, and the next decade of Cyclone athletics, I want to share several important thoughts.

Like many of you, I was disappointed with the final month of 2019. Although our student-athletes continued to excel in the classroom, December did not go as desired from a competitive standpoint.

Unfortunately, it is human nature to magnify our frustrations during challenging times.  (The challenging times are the two game losing streaks of their football and basketball teams, and getting pounded by Iowa in basketball. They are used to all of this) However, it is equally important to remember where our journey began and how much we have progressed during the past decade. Our facilities, fan support, and overall athletic and academic success, have never been better at Iowa State University.

The simple fact that the Florida Citrus Sports leadership team chose the Cyclones over several other Big 12 institutions to play Notre Dame in the Camping World Bowl, (apparently several has now come to mean one) underlines how our football program is perceived nationally.  Furthermore, the competitive success of our entire department has risen from the bottom of the Big 12 a decade ago to one of the top three programs as recently as last year. (pollard is the grand champion of hyperbole)

We have won ten Big 12 championships in the last ten years (after just three in the prior decade) and won four of the last six Big 12 Men's Basketball Tournament championships. In addition, next fall our football program will have the opportunity to qualify for a bowl game for the fourth year in a row, a feat never before accomplished in the history of our institution.

This past December's performance is a good reminder that the journey from good to great is not a straight line and often includes many setbacks and turns, which can bring disappointments and even bewilderment. All of our coaches and student-athletes work extremely hard week after week, but progress sometimes mysteriously stalls. For some people, the irrational impulse when things get tough is to lose hope, become negative and quit the journey because it is simply too challenging.

I can guarantee you that is not the case for our coaches, student-athletes and staff. We are ready to continue the journey. I am reminded of a quote from the late, great, Vince Lombardi who once said, "The man on top of the mountain didn't fall there." Climbing a steep mountain only gets tougher the higher you get because the air gets thinner. It is important to remember that our journey will not get easier, and will most likely include further disappointments. However, I am confident that we will ultimately achieve the success we all desire.

(What a rough ridin' windbag)

My simple request to each of you is to never lose your passion and desire to want the best for our program. Disappointment, although painful, is also very motivating. However, we need to remember there is a difference between being irrational and being disappointed. Irrational thoughts, when acted upon, actually make us look like the fan bases we often times make fun of when they experience disappointments. Let us be the fan base that other schools aspire to model. (holee crap, I bet he fist pumped when typing this and let out an audible, nailed it) I am confident we can do that, but we need everyone's help.

Finally, I want to share several exciting updates with you related to the multiple facility projects we are currently working on.

The construction of the $90M Student Performance Center continues to progress on budget and on schedule. We anticipate it will open in January of 2021. Once the building is completed, we can begin work on the north end of the stadium, which includes the new game day plaza and north concourse connection. We anticipate that project will be completed by August of 2021
We recently secured two $5M gift commitments ($10M total) from separate donors to fund the construction of the "Pedestrian Gateway" bridge over University Boulevard that we introduced last fall as part of our Multi-Use Entertainment and Art District. We are scheduled to seek approval from the Board of Regents at their February meeting to begin the design and construction of the bridge. The construction of the bridge will create a dynamic entranceway to campus and serve as a catalyst for the development of additional football game day parking inventory and the completion of the multi-use district.
We are also planning to present to the Board of Regents at their April meeting, our plans to proceed with the Hilton Coliseum concourse expansion project and our vision to connect Hilton to the Scheman Building, further enhancing our ability to provide additional hospitality and entertainment space for patrons using Hilton and the Iowa State Center.
We continue to explore modifications to the parking lots in and around the Iowa State Center to further improve parking accommodations for fans visiting those facilities, including Hilton Coliseum. We hope to have these improvements completed by the fall of 2021.
We are making great progress on the multi-use development project (the funding for the Pedestrian Bridge was a critical first step) and we anticipate providing more updates related to this project later this spring.
In closing, I simply want to say thank you. The support, passion, and patience that the majority of our fan base has exhibited over the past decade is phenomenal. We have so much to be proud of, and even more to look forward to. I can honestly say our coaches and staff have never been more committed and confident about their abilities to achieve greatness at Iowa State University. We look forward to a prosperous future together.

Happy New Year and Go Cyclones!

It will just enlighten you to just how shitty the Big 12 bowl ties are compared to the SEC and Big 10. The Texas Bowl is either the 7th or 8th bowl tie in for the SEC depending if they get their usual 2 CFP spots, it's the 4th for the Big 12.

Yes because refs in the B12, especially the B12 CCG, are known for calling flawless, by the book games of football. I'd never expect them to throw a questionable flag that isn't in accordance with the rule book.

The targeting call I don't agree with, not because it wasn't by the rule, but because the rule should be changed. The way it's written a defender is basically expected to change directions mid tackle if the ball carrier falls and his head goes into the path of the defenders shoulder. It's not realistic.
I agree with the 'offsides' that technically it's a no call, it just seemed like a bizzare no call, especially that second time. I'm not sure how contact wasn't made, even in the slightest, nor do I understand why no one on the Iowa State line didn't put a hand up, or flinch. Still... Oklahoma is full of meth and trailer parks. That's the point I'm trying to make here.

If Drake Stoops' ass wasn't completely on the ground when Young drove his shoulder pads onto the back of his head, it was an inch or so from being as such. Young tried for an unnecessary big hit. If Sean McDonough wasn't so loudly wrong with his "that's football" take, we wouldn't even be talking about this. Not only was it textbook targeting, I mean what else was he expecting to hit when the receiver was literally sitting down, but it was late as well.

I disagree. It's easy to pick apart and make that call with still shots, but that play unfolded fairly quickly and when Isheem Young starts to go in for the hit Stoops was still mostly upright. If Stoops had stayed up and successfully spun around like he was trying to do, it would've been a clean hit, and Iowa State wouldn't have been without one of their top defensive players. Instead, he went ahead and fell down, Young make strong contact with his head, and the refs threw a flag.

Yes, it's textbook targeting, which is why my argument is the rule needs to be changed. That shouldn't have been a penalty.

I think rules based on intent are hardly enforceable and just lead to more whiney fanbases like Iowa State.  It builds a grey area into a rule that every penalized fanbase will live in.

Stoops also wasn't even close to upright when Young puts his head down for the hit.  Right before the hit with Stoops nearly on the ground and Young watching him while fully upright.  It was targeting and intentional, although the intentional part is irrelevant to me.

Chicat already showed that Young didn't start his launch until Stoops was damn near down. If you want to ignore that and still say Stoops was upright then you have to acknowledge that Young would then be aiming to launch, not wrap up, into Stoops' knee area, which is also dirty, not illegal in college but undoubtedly dirty as hell.

Gotta be good and get wins under your belt to chisel away at persecution complex. Unfortunately persecution complex extends beyond sports in the Midwest (as I've learned in Nebraska) so I don't see that changing. As fans watch more meaningful games, they'll understand the system more. 1980 Wildcat fans probably weren't up to date on every rule or how conference standings work.

I don’t there is any reason to think he can’t keep them at 7-5 to 9-3 in perpetuity until a job opens.

If his recruiting classes keep coming in the 50s there's plenty of reasons to think that. You miss on one quarterback or have bad injury luck then you get into trouble. LHC Bill Snyder made that look easier than it really was but that eventually caught up to him too, twice.

Campbell and Klieman both will need to recruit better to meet the demands of his fan base. #CyclONEnation is happy now but let them keep toiling on the fringes of the top 25, they'll turn. They will expect to be back in the Big 12 championship game next year. An 8-4 regular season won't feel nearly as good.

It's why I think any coach that has the ability to go to a school that affords them the opportunity to recruit better than where they are currently should always take that chance. As bad of shape as Michigan is in now they still have the #11 ranked signing class in the country.

I reject the notion that Iowa State fans are any more loyal than any other Midwest or southern P5 fan base. The thought that they sold out their stadium when they were bad is simply untrue. They didn't even sell out the season in 2019. They rarely sold out the stadium even against Iowa. Anyway, that as the back drop, if they go 8-4 next year they will fall short of their expectation of making the CCG. They are saying, rightfully so, that 2021 will be their best team ever. 8-4 will be a regression 7-5 will be a steep regression, they aren't better than anyone else, they will be disappointed, just like we were with Bill both times when he failed to meet our expectations, never mind the fact everyone else didn't understand that people here were unhappy with Bill averaging 7.5 wins a year from '13-18. Once you know you can get Porterhouse you aren't going to be cool going back to flank steak.

  at the steak comparison.

I do think that Campbell can average 7.5 wins a year at ISU and they will still be happy to have him.

To go off your point.... ISU got to taste the porterhouse once when their boss let them tag along to a business dinner since everyone else from the company was sick.

They were happy to go and eat the steak but they know they probably won't get to go again and definitely can't afford it on their own. They just recently got promoted up a level and are able to afford flank steak instead of hamburger helper.

And you know what? Flank steak isn't all that bad when you've been eating hamburger helper all your life.

The corn doesn't actually get shipped to either of those places, that's just where futures contracts are traded.

IIRC Chicago sets the corn/soybean prices and KC handles wheat.

So, we're 6 years into Campbell being at ISU. He's averaging 7 wins per year (high of 9, low of 3) for a .552 winning percentage. 2 bowl wins in 6 seasons, 0 conference championships.

I'll be honest, I thought he was winning at a higher rate than that. The next few years will be interesting.

my first thought was "damn as a college athlete imagine how hard it would be to break all this news to your parents." But now it seems like the parents were a part of it? Just complete familial suicide.

I'm with you. I don't really get it.

Side rant, but IMO it should always be legal to bet on your own team to win.

disagree. if an athlete bets on his team when he thinks they will win - and doesn't bet the game at all when he thinks they won't - he's in effect giving up valuable information to whoever typically takes his bets (whether it be a legal operator or corner street bookie.) if dekker bet iowa state in the first three games but not the fourth, as one example, it's a major story. and if he just so happens to play poorly in that fourth game, people will question if he told someone else to bet against them.

best solution: don't bet if you're a participant in the sport.

JP says it's just kid stuff and harmless bets that they did on their phones.  The way they seen it was the players would see invites to bet and would bet small amounts not thinking they were doing anything wrong.  I guess he's not the same bad person as our JC.

Nah, they got caught because the mechanisms worked. Most of these dumb asses were using accounts with their parents or girlfriends names but they were placing the bets from campus and even the damn football complex. A couple of them had their parents helping them place bets before they turned 18.
