Title: CBE Pre-game BBQ Recommendos
Post by: Kat Kid on November 17, 2015, 10:52:24 AM
Situation:

I am travelling from MHK to KC on Tuesday afternoon (departure about 3pm) and I am bringing my uncle from Kalamazoo, MI who has a taste for Kansas City BBQ.  Last trip to Kansas he packed up two sides of ribs and a pound of brisket from Arthur Bryant's, put it in his luggage and flew back with it.

This year should I take him to the original Arthur Bryant's again?  Should I take him to Q39?  I think we will want to make the first game, but don't need to be there by the tip of the 6:30pm game at Sprint Center and we won't get to town until about 5pm.

How busy will the big time BBQ joints of KC be?
Which one should I take this budding BBQ beast to?

What do you think Cat fans?

You can call into KC Joes and get it to go and save a lot of time, KK. You could even eat it at our place before the game if you had to. Prime pre game PAK'ing spot with free parking. 3/4 a mile from the Center too.  :gocho:

I have always been a big fan of ABs and Joes, but before ALCS game 2 I went to Gates (north of ABs on Brooklyn) and the burnt ends I had there were fantastic.

kk came to KC, where did i bring his pussy ass?  that's right, q39.
2 things about q39- it's kind of expensive and they aren't going to pack his uncle's food in a way that would make it easy to ship.
i eat at jackstack as much as q39 but only because i walk there, q39 is a bit of an effort.  both are good.

Oh.  My uncle isn't going to be packing this to go, we are dining in only.  I was just describing his appetite for KC BBQ which is top notch.  The last time was kind of funny because he had a 1pm flight and we just waited outside of Arthur Bryant's for it to open and then he ordered his to-go and stuffed it in his suitcase like a psycho.

I am taking him to Q39.

if time is an issue, give SLAP's bbq a try, right off of I70 in KCK.  it's a small, dive-y place, pretty good the one time I had it, they are pretty new and still learning though.

slaps is good but they just recently started selling beyond lunch and only are open until that day's supply runs out. no telling when that might be on a day to day basis

You could probably get Slaps at 5pm on a Tuesday, but should probably have a back up plan just in case. Freight House Jack Stacks would be a good back up.

Head a bit east of 71 to LC's. Woodyard is at I-35/Lamar and is also decent BBQ. I'm also a huge fan of Rosedale BBQ on Southwest Blvd. Rosedale is where Anthony Bourdain was chowing down with The Black Keys in the KC episode. Very good for the price.

If you want to rate a BBQ joint...do not take this lightly...order a combo turkey and ham sandwich. If you get thin sliced grocery store processed ham and turkey, RUN AWAY.

If, on the other hand, you get thick sliced smoked turkey and truly smoked ham piled high on magical white bread, mark this place high on the BBQ scale.

I know of which I speak here. Everything else on the menu with the latter will be superb!

had some of this shipped a few months ago, it was pretty damn awful.  Brisket was the least shitty, but it was drenched in sauce.  The ribs were drenched in sauce and pretty much sucked.  The beans were by far the worse, tasted totally different, bad aftertaste.  WOULD NOT RECOMMEND!!

KK's uncle should do a couple days in KC going to all these places and getting their best efforts.  Do it at a time when there's no #oscar to eff up his plans.

No this is more like:  "I have a bunch of people taking care of work/domestic things while I am away and I promised them KC BBQ so I am taking some back to distribute as a thank you."

My ABs/Gates plan won't disappoint. JMHO.

That promise works well when visiting Seattle and there's dozens of dudes selling all of the local delicacies in the spot you'll undoubtedly be walking through and who'll pack them up for you in a FAA-approved travel freezer.

OT: I tried googling to see if there's a bbq place in detroit that he could pick up from and claim it's from KC.  Google "detroit bbq."  Apparently the main proprietor up there has social media issues.

aren't Gate's burnt ends just really loosely chopped beef?  like, not cubed?

They take their burnt ends and chop them. I think they are really good that way, plus they have a nice char.

i think it's actually just meat shavings from the cutting block mixed with brisket trimmings.  similar to what you find on the poor russ at jackstack.
in other words, they're cheating and not really serving burnt ends.

q39 used to sell be's by the pound.  i'd get them all of the time.  then they started getting really busy and have taken them off the menu because they can't make enough of them.  you can still get them on the burnt end burger and w/ their mixed combo plate, but that's it.

Q39, my experience is that the over cook their stuff just a bit (going for the "fall off the bone" approach).

Like SLAPs, but has some ways to go.

Best chicken (yes, I know, its chicken) I ever had was at the downtown Bryants.

Woodyard can be solid (just remember, you get to sit outside, so ponder your weather/toughness quotient).

Have not been to CharBar.

Now I need to find an excuse to head to KC for some BBQ after reading this thread.  Have about 4 places that have opened in the last 5 months that I have not tried yet.

Everyone likes bbq chicken, but you don't go to these elite bbq joints for their chicken!

Home, to your smoker. You don't waste a KC bbq experience on chicken. Come on guys, get it together.

I guess you could do that if you wanted to spend more time and money for a product that will probably end up tasting worse.
