Cats were 36th this week.
STUDS
Chris Murray (Reno Gazette Journal) had the Cats at 20th! Murray is the frontrunner for AP Voter Stud of the Year. He's the only voter who has had the Cats on all of his ballots this season.
Rounding out the studs who voted for the cats are Keith Sargeant of the Asbury Park Press in Neptune, New Jersey, who ranked the Cats 22, and Gary Horowitz of the Statesman Journal out of Salem, Oregon, who ranked the cats at 24.
DUD
Doug Doughty, of the Roanoke (Va.) Times had the Cats at 25th last week, and dropped them to NR. Stanford and Miami joined his poll this week in lieu of the Cats.

Can we also talk about the absolute horseshit that is sweaty gary's frogs getting dropped a spot? You can make a pretty solid argument that Ohio State, Michigan State, and Ol Miss all would have lost at Tech on Saturday, unless you think tech is worse than Western Michigan, Central Michigan, and Vandy.
College football polls are the rough ridin' worst. I can't believe that is how this idiotic sport picked it's champion for over 100 years.
-
There are maybe ten teams in the country the Cats wouldn't have a chance against. And there are so many mediocre teams it's unreal. Should make for a very exciting season.

Yeah. Even the better teams this year are pretty meh overall. There are like 0 dominant teams.

i'm really fascinated by AP Polls. my favorite thing is looking at biases the polls have based on their location. for example, when we played miami in '11 and '12, the guy from the miami herald always had the Cats ranked relatively higher than the rest of the country. i think that's really neat. it also blows my mind how often that must go on.
man could you imagine how much fun it would be if the coaches' ballot wasn't confidential each week? i would pay at least $20 a week to see who voted for who. i still hold a grudge against James Franklin for his final ballot a few years ago.

I've always liked the coach poll more than any other. Give me a reason not to.

Even if the SID is doing the poll for the coach there still is no way that SID is seeing enough football to know what the hell they are talking about. In both polls preseason confirmation bias completely ruins the process.

There's honestly no way an AP writer can watch enough football, either. Agree the presence of preseason polls totally ruins the process.
-
i love all the polls, and the pollsters too. i'm a bit of a pollaholic.
preseason polls are probably the most controversial so it's understandable that some readers of this blog can't handle them (they don't understand them) but even they are valuable in the grand scheme (#pizza) of things. for every 1 philistine poll basher, i will find you 50 pro-poll supporters who have way more cfb knowledge than their ignorant counterparts.
-
I thought this was a decent article on BOTC about why college football polls are useless:

I will enjoy this thread. This post will likely be my last contribution to it, but this thread will be great and I will read it.
Amen.
Gonna win 'em all!

Very smart math guys would say you don't need to see one damn play to know who is better. Just look at results. The computers never watch a game, but yet they do a pretty incredible job at predicting future outcomes. You lose the forest for the trees when you watch.

Depends on the computer and the #data it uses. Also, computers aren't remotely reliable until a certain at least several weeks into conference games because SOS is all caddywampus. I'll take my personal CFB expertise over some crummy algorithm, if we were to have a john henry vs. the machine competition.
But perhaps this is a discussion for another thread. If we win on Saturday, I'll be very curious to see if #1 EMAW fan Chris Murray catapults (hehehe) us into the top 10, or if Dud Doughty comes crawling back on his hands and knees to beg for forgiveness.

Who in the eff gave A&M a #1 vote?

Probably the best in the PAC 12 and have a great chance at making the playoff. I'll be pulling for them the rest of the year.

Who in the eff gave A&M a #1 vote?
That would be Josh Kendall of Columbia, South Carolina's "The State." His ballot is strange as all get out. He had A&M unranked int he preseason, then catapulted them ALL THE WAY TO NUMBER 2 following their win against Arizona State the first week of the season. Your guess is as good as mine.
Other WTF things about Kenall's ballot: He has TCU at number 8, Michigan at 11 (their highest rankings of any ballot), Duke at 20th (their highest ranking), Mississippi State at 21 (their highest ranking).
You can view his entire ballot here: http://collegepolltracker.com/football/pollster/josh-kendall/2015/week-6 (http://collegepolltracker.com/football/pollster/josh-kendall/2015/week-6)

Cats were 37th this week.
STUD
Chris Murray (Reno Gazette Journal) had the Cats at 25th! This is his second consecutive APVSOTW award, and Murray is running away AP Voter Stud of the Year. He continues to be the only voter who has had the Cats on all of his ballots this season.
There were no other studs who voted for the Cats this week.
DUD:flush:
Jon Wilner of the San Jose Mercury News is this week's AP Voter Dud of the Week. He has Baylor all the way down to number 10, Michigan at 12, and Oregon at 18. Tsk tsk, Mr. Wilner.
I apologize for the oversight on Josh Kendall -- he probably should've been the Dud of the week. But the decision was already made. Alas, I have a feeling he'll be featured as a weekly dud throughout this 2015 season.

In light of Mr. Murray's undying devotion to all things EMAW, I think it is appropriate that we here at gE.c learn more about our friend.
Chris Murray
(http://collegepolltracker.com/images/pollsters/chris-murray.jpg)
Mr. Murray has been the Reno (Nev.) Gazette-Journal's Nevada Wolf Pack basketball beat writer since 2007 and the newspaper's football beat writer since 2010. He also held the role of assistant sports editor and won multiple APSE and Nevada Press Association awards for feature writing, project writing and explanatory journalism.
On why he loves writing sports news, Mr. Murray says "I love what sports tell us about ourselves and our community." Murray continued, "Sports can be inspirational, dramatic, depressing and just plain fun. I tell the story of sports in Northern Nevada. Won’t you come along for the ride?"
I think we, here at this modest blog, can honestly answer, "yes, Mr. Murray. We'll come along for the ride."
