Chigger bites are the best! Whenever i'd go to my grandparents farm in the summer, i'd get murdered by chigger bites. They only go around tight areas, like your socks, waiste line, etc. They're a blast!

So blessed that KSU entomologists have led the way on itch mites. Fact: these things are gross:
Quote
P. herfsi are 0.2 mm in length and barely visible to the naked eye. Species of Pyemotes mites generally have similar life habits (Smith 1973, oscar and Wrensch 1990), as follows: newly emerged and mated females inject a neurotoxin-containing saliva into their hosts, which paralyzes the host and enables the gravid female mites to feed on the host's hemolymph. The toxin in the saliva of these itch mites is so potent that a single mite can paralyze and kill an insect larva 166,000 times its own weight (Tomalski et al. 1988).

The posterior portion (opisthosoma) of the female enlarges (physogastry; Fig. 2)

(https://goemaw.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.ksre.ksu.edu%2Fnews%2Fsty%2F2004%2FB%26amp%3BWPregnantFemaleWebPage.jpg&hash=a4c113bb1f8e4c7f4cb9efe33546ec5821d50598)

as its progeny develops inside, and, within a few days, up to 250 adult mites emerge from the gravid female. oscar and Wrensch (1990) found that progeny of the straw itch mite averaged 254 offspring of which 92% were females. Males emerge before the females, position themselves around the mother's genital opening, and mate with emerging females. Then, mated females disperse to find new hosts. These mites often are dispersed by wind, and when they land on vertebrate hosts, they attempt to feed, resulting in the bites.

my bottle of Caladryl says it was 500 pesos.   It works ok.   I also tried spraying rubbing alcohol on them, as suggested online.    I don't know that any one treatment was any better.    I also have been taking Zyrtec to help, seems to do better.

So I went to walk the dog over the weekend, we have a pretty forested walking trail near our house, it was like 8:30 pm so it was dark.  I round the corner and my neighbors are walking up the street from the trail with umbrellas.  It's completely clear skies and dark.  They told me it was because oak mites fall down from the trees on you.   :sdeek:

I was sitting in it for several hours glassing.  Also went down into a few of those woody bottoms/draws, had to beat brush and stuff.

One thing, I found what I think is a natural spring and my God I didn't think Kansas was capable of water so clear.  It would rival anything the Rockies can produce.  Just beautiful stuff flowing over limestone.

They generally resemble chigger bites, with a smaller pustule in the center. KSU profs described them in an article (http://jme.oxfordjournals.org/content/43/3/610 (http://jme.oxfordjournals.org/content/43/3/610)) and included photos:

Well, a good indicator is that I'll get covered in a few dozen of them in about fifteen minutes, without being around a swarm of mosquitoes.

Also, your body feels like you have chicken pox.

Finally, when you take your clothes off, it looks like you have chicken pox.

Bug spray works well.

not against oak mites
I like to rub pine sol all over myself.. Get mumped oak mites
Pissing all over yourself works too.  Learned that from "Naked and Afraid".  Also, noticed that it not a good idea when on a date.  :D

They're microscopic they make it through clothes no problem.

Can you actually feel them biting you when it happens?  I feel crap but I wonder if I'm like freaking out man.

I literally have bites like where my two butt cheeks touch each other.  Multiple in that area.  And when I've gone outside it's either been with pants or with like workout shorts with the integrated compression shorts (tight seal).  Fuckers are incredible.

My neighborhood is filled with oak trees, and the two largest ones are in my front yard.

when I had like 80 oak mite bites last year, my only relief was to use spray isopropyl alcohol on them.   Nothing else worked.  Kept them dried out.

I got a few this week and they were super itchy and red and stuff. I bought some trusty calamine lotion tho and they are basically gone now.
