Yep, I was ready to burn it all down this spring. But they didn't. So I'm slowly talking myself into this team

i'll watch with one eye covered.  just learn to focus on the small victories.   maybe we limited ourselves to less than 15 turnovers.  or didn't get out rebounded by double digits. or not beat by 20+ on back to back nights.
i don't want the guys who are playing here to fail but i really don't see any opportunity for them to be successful.

No, the answer is no.  It's likely going to be a long bleak period of misery and shame between the end of football and the beginning of BatCat season.

Hell hot dangy yes.  Just like my honeymoon. Once I figured out the swelling was not from a new disease, things got real exciting.    Right now we think this team is a diseased yangerslong, but it is a big ol titanium robothrobber.

You're not a very far drive from Salina, right?

@Tobias, this got me thinking, I have to go back to KS in early December and early February, but both for work events that are happening on Saturdays, theoretically killing PoundTown SchemePAKs.  Then I checked out that December weekend - we play at dumbstick that Friday 12/4, not Saturday.  Depending on what time that game is, could be a hell of an opportunity, and not one to be taken lightly.

Going into 05-06 for both was pretty bad. Hoops was coming off Wooly's best season I guess.

i was convinced the prior football season was a fluke. you're probably right about basketball but i hadn't tasted success at all and at least WANTED Wooly to succeed much more than i do oscar at this point.

Good points. This is definitely worse than 05-06, that was just the worst one that I could think of since the DOD years. I have very little interest right now in K-State basketball.

I am going to continue to roll with my belief that this team actually has enough talent on it that with the right coaching they could squeak into the NCAA tourney.   But as I've said, because they're coached by oscar Weber, they won't,  and thus it will be a very frustrating season and I'm not looking forward to it right now.

In fact, you should come to Salina for the 12/4 event and then go catch the football game at BSFS that next day.  Seriously.

I enjoy college basketball a bunch.  I'm going to go into the season being as positive as I can be. No one knows what we have, so that will be interesting to see.  I am holding out hope that we will be better than most on this board "know" we will be.

I think that if you have 0 expectations it will be tolerable.

I would also recommend thinking of it as a comedy instead of a serious drama.

Thankfully, I can pretty much ignore basketball until after the Heart of Texas Bowl or Liberty Bowl or Alamo Bowl (if we start remembering we have a Gronkowski on our team).

Not complaining, but I rarely get more than a few minutes of uninterrupted lunch time.  So I get on gE whenever I can. I keep it open just in case I get time between meetings or office stuff.

Or maybe oscar shows them game tape from when Frank was our coach to get the players all excited just to be utterly disappointed when they walk out of that tunnel for the first time to 5,000 + screaming fans.

lol at their being 5,000 fans at that first game. I felt bad for the guys during last year's non-con, it's going to be brutal this year.

You think that, and then you can imagine a cold ash wednesday with the downtrodden filing into the old OOD seeking divine intervention and realize God could wear any uniform and make it work.

God ain't walking through the fOOD door.

But to circle back, those unis will be a lol bonus and make for even more reason to be jazzed for hoops season if you approach it correctly.

Depending on what time that game is, could be a hell of an opportunity, and not one to be taken lightly.

i am NOT taking this development lightly... :excited:

I've pretty much locked down in my head flying to Wichita Thursday night, working Friday until whenever pak'n allows and heading up to Pound Town.

That 12/4 game at Georgia is now listed for 6pm Brownbackistan time.

Jazzed as I am, I don't even really know when the season starts.  Nonetheless, Sergio just gave me a 'cut and a large list of topics for us to hit in chat when it does.

T-bones
Happy Hour
Keeping your own olives (not milk) at the bar
Cheapskates
Getting ripped off by cheapskates in drink-buying exchanges
Getting ripped off by Shawn Kemp in drink-buying exchanges
IRS audits
International travel and specifically the Canadian culture/economy

We can call back to this if I've forgotten any of them once hoops chats start.

Slightly jazzed today. I've just always been a sucker for K-State basketball guys.

I read an article today about Turgeon losing a bunch of player before last year after being terrible his first 3 and being left for dead. All of a sudden Maryland won a bunch of games, finished 2nd in the Big 10, and this year is a Top 5 team.

Is there any logical connection between oscar and us and that situation?

Absolutely not.

But that article gave me a sliver of illogical hope and I know once K-State games start I'll be following and hoping for the best.

Its what I do.

The difference is that Turgeon is a good coach and oscar is oscar.

Turgeon has looked like dogshit since he left A&M (minus last year).

I am looking forward to the football/basketball overlap.  I stand by my thought that we will be better than most posters here think. Not great, perhaps, but better than dismal.

Make sure to watch the videos. Kamau looks like he is going to do great things, whereas Carlbe is either camera shy or has been randolphing a little too hard. Also from the way they are talking it sounds like Alvin Brooks is the real driving force behind their desire to be Wildcats...not that awkward oscar fellow.

Too bad this contest doesn't extend later or I could write about the entire schemePAK experience by way of ICT.  Maybe I could just write about how ICT will be a factor in the schemePAK, and then I'd coincidentally win tickets to that next day's football game (and probably give them to one of you people).

Folks, this is going to be a hell of a good year and great in the next few.  They have recruited some good players.  I think if the gut hollers come to the early games and blow a lung, the Cats will grow into a a group of feisty maulers. My biggest concern is Bigmeat's defense.  DJamer and Bullnuts put sweet moves on him.   Hollywoods is cool and smooth.  Happy Horndog is my man though.

To be fair, the air had already been sucked out of the stadium after their 64 sec TD drive and our 3 & out. Not much #momentum for the hoops teams at the time of the recognition.

Just so these are all in one spot when we need them:

https://twitter.com/TrimGoEMAW/status/662054940114718720

I thought it'd been longer than a month since my last haircut.

I also can't remember what the october 4 international talk was, but it doesn't matter because he covered the whole globe today.

IMO we are trying to play as a team.  Westicles and Hopper are blossoming as leaders.  We have better guard play from the Animals.   I really love the grunt work of Hot Horndogs.  Claws and The Flush need confidence, get mad.  Rebounding is disappointing.

Let me get this right. With the addition of this new Vegas thing, we now have (1) The NCAA Tournament, (2) the NIT, (3) the CBI (before now, the lowest of all, and a tourney I believe we have rejected at least once), and now this Vegas scheme? Looks like the new Vegas deal will be a perfect fit for oscar. If he can get there.

I am sad I cannot go.  I am glad to see so many getting on board with this team.

I'm the guy who always says I told you so, and I did say early in the summer that I thought this could be a pretty good team.  A fellow gE-er that I used to hang out with quite a bit and I had a heated discussion after the dismissals/defections/departures last year.  He told me we weren't bringing anyone good on board...I said to be patient and see what we have, and that I thought we would be better than most on here thought.  We haven't really discussed the team much so far since then.
Now, I don't know what the result will be as far as season record, but I do know that it has been much easier to cheer for these guys than it was last year, imo.

That said this team is much better than I anticipated (even with the 2 losses) and I enjoy watching them play. Much more enjoyable than last year's trainwreck of a season.

Claws played like he was going to crap his shorts.  We missed his points.  It is my imagination or not that the offense flows better with Claws due to his passing.   I still think it is a mistake not playing xWhomper.  We could have used some good whomping on am center.

I assume they want to see what progress he makes during break with the added practice time. I don't think not playing has cost us a game yet, so it is fair. A good question would be what is WaHH (wins above hot horndogs), how many more games would he help us win. I am generally against redshirting in college basketball tho.

I mean he only played 4 high major road games so who knows. That Georgia game is akin to Wooly winning at 2000's Mizzou or Tech.

Also the win at WSU the last time we played there was a bigger win than the Wyoming win IMO.

totally agree with mir. we may be better than predicted but we're still gonna finish the ooc with 0 wins over tourney teams and have a 7-11 type confy season with a bunch of "respectable" losses. it's nothing to get the feels over.

Last year we went 4-2 against the best 3 teams in the conference, I'll bet everything I got we won't do that this year. For the gigantic pain in the ass last year's team was they did have a bonafied "put the ball in my hand" closer last year, we don't have that anymore and that's going to be problematic against good teams that have that guy or guys.

this is true - we don't have a clutch playmaker.  we're clearly not in the top 3rd.  But, based on what I've seen so far, we're also not in the bottom 3rd with Tech, TCU, and OSU.  If we can compete with the middle of the pack, I like our chances of .500 in conference.  which isn't great - but a hell of a lot better than I thought we'd be.

For the gigantic pain in the ass last year's team was they did have a bonafied "put the ball in my hand" closer last year, we don't have that anymore and that's going to be problematic against good teams that have that guy or guys.

Maybe not 4-2 vs the top 3, but we'll win several games against good teams. oscar has been consistent with getting several wins against really good teams throughout his career. The key for this season is beating the teams at our level and below us, especially on the road. When oscar's teams have slipped in the past, that's been his big downfall (like last year).

I think we may have a guy that develops that fairly soon, hopefully in time for conference play.  I think Wes has moments of that, and he could be the guy who directs that, if not taking it into his own hands.  The end of the Georgia game is an example.  Maybe a stretch, but I'm hopeful.

Foster was absolutely the key to beating OU both times last year and he was decent against Baylor in Manhattan. But he was also pretty terrible in the last two wins against KU and ISU at home. Granted, the key player against KU and ISU was Nigel Johnson.

Not only do we not have a clutch player, but Edwards most likely feels that he should be that guy now, and that is not going to work out well, imo.

Westicles will have to be the guy playing 2 man ball with Wade. Stokes will have to be the spark in big games, he not shy of the moment. He will chuck.

Edwards is that guy and I don' think he wants to be. But he has made plays late before.

I like Wes a lot but he doesn't have it in him, I just don't see him as a player that demands the ball when we need a shot. I see him like a timid Rodney McGruder.

Kinda ironically enough I guess is that I think oscar really hated the fact that MF2 insisted on doing it by himself at crunch time.

Yeah, Stokes can be that guy, we'll see if he's willing to step out of our no stars allowed system to be that guy. When in the hell has Edwards made a play in a big spot?

I think Stokes is way too streaky to be COUNTED on to be that guy. He's had two good shooting games from behind the arc and four bad ones, other games have been meh. Certainly not a ratio that inspires confidence. Edwards is the same way, some nights he can shoot, most nights he can't. Wes just can't shoot the basketball at all outside of layups, that's pretty clear at this point. Best plan is probably to utilize Claws like Huggins did with Cartier Martin. I would imagine that's our best bet for having a "clutch" player.

both dogbite and deathbite are spot up shooters.  "that guys" are players that can create their own shots off the bounce.
on this roster that equates to hopper and westicles.

Yeah you're right about that, as pissclams mentioned though this conversation is about someone with the ability to get their own shot late in games. We don't have anyone who can score outside of the framework of the offense which is not good late in tight games.

I have now been to three games.  We seem to be going backwards in guard play, Deathbite is not getting the assists like he sbould,  Westicles is reverting to pre-wallies descent and poor foul shooting.  Hot Horndogs plays well when you see him in person. He is the best passer and the offense moves. Steve Eck taught him well.  Oscar has been out coached.  The other team ran plays that work, but they didn't have enough talent

This is an amazing coincidence.  I just saw him IRL this afternoon, and he and I both commented on how we had not read any about this years Cat basketball team, or any posts on this site about them.  So, I opened the first thread on the site when I got home, and read the most recent comment...BOOM.

Anyway, he'll be back later in the conference season (as with me) to pile on if we start losing.  But, we did have a nice conversation about the article in the Topeka Capital Journal today (it was on the coffee table) about how the "new rules" are helping scoring, and helping KU.  We thought it would also help Claws, and we agreed that as long as Claws plays well, oscar's job is super safe, win or lose.  Dean hitting jumpers is enough to make our entire fanbase swoon and forget all other "problems" with basketball.

Depends on Wade's health and whether our stars get in foul trouble.

During the SLU broadcast they mentioned that Wade lost 13 pounds when he had pneumonia. Hopefully he'll be back to clawing shape soon.

Oklahoma and KU do look like they can give us a big kick to the wallies, but the other teams are not scary.  We are not the big 12 cat litter box.  It is possible we lose every game.  I will not be ashamed.  Last year I was threatening to have someone kick me in the balls when watching the weed cats and the other good kids play screw this basketball.  I sat through the OK football game to the end. Why?  Purple gruns hugging my sweet Renobutt baby.

If Huggins doesn't crater our domes then I'll get jazzed for conference play.  The problem is Huggy is going to probably crater our domes while Oscar does his lizard tongue hands in the pockets thing while Stepehn Hurt jacks up threes.

I admit to turning off a number of games last because the effort was so bad. This year the only thing that offends me is the offense at times.

Lots of good came out of last night, besides the ugly basketball and loss.

1st, we only dropped 2 spots in kenpom to #37.

2nd, we jumped to #4 in 3PT% D, 32.5%.

3rd, we maintained the Big 12's best FT defense at 67%.

The biggest thing I am jazzed about is the thought of next year's team.  Deathbite and Dogbite at point guard, the Flush and Riphide at shooting guard, Westicles and Clyde at small forward point, DJamer and xWhomper at center, and Claws at power forward.  I am not sure Bullnuts will be around, Hot Horndogs is a good gruntmiester, but it would be great if we can get a good power forward yet.

Illinois is a hard job, imo. If you aren't the right fit you are screwed. You have to deal with Chicago recruiting and a Big Ten with some pretty darn good coaches and programs. You aren't high and mighty on the pecking order list.

Illinois is a hard job, imo. If you aren't the right fit you are screwed. You have to deal with Chicago recruiting and a Big Ten with some pretty darn good coaches and programs. You aren't high and mighty on the pecking order list.

anyone who complains about "having to deal with chicago recruiting" as a division 1 head coach in a p5 conference 2 hours south of chicago is in the wrong job.  if you aren't high and mighty on the pecking order list, you're also in the wrong job.

oscar did pretty well in chicago towards the end of his time at illinois, he just complained about having to deal with chicago recruiting too much and therefore was in the wrong job.

oscar for all accounts, has surprisingly recruited well to K-State. His problem has been turnover. Let's see if he can maintain these next two classes.

I don't think Oscar has recruited well.  At least relative to his Big 12 peer group.

4* recruits: Dean, Sneed, Harris
3* diamond in the rough: Westicles, DJamer (Spring recruit), Foster, and i'll give  Hurt a push (had a lot of offers). Maybe Brown and Stokes too.

Frank (not trying to compare here) was in a recruiting drought when it came to 4*'s or beyond.

Oscar runner up for COY???

 :horrorsurprise:

Huggs? RT @JasonKingBR: So many good coaches in the Big 12. If season ended today I'd vote for Shaka Smart as COY; oscar Weber as runner-up. @franfraschilla

My strategy of not watching games is producing mixed results.  I watched the first half of the KU game, but no other games.  I thought I might have jinxed us.  Then, I didn't watch either the OU game or the BU game.

I think I need to just keep chopping wood and not watching.  Good things will come.

Your approach to lent probably would work well for K-State basketball. I know it would be better for me to go serve others than to watch us play, especially games like last night. My thoughts are not very redeeming much of the time when we play like that.

Our entire starting 5 have a chance to be on an all-league team of some kind, pretty unusual for KSU. Also Snead has a chance for the all newcomer team. Many unknowns at this point but we should be very competitive. I like the current direction of our program. Considering the parity in the league a tough luck year could prevent us from moving up in the standings a lot. However if we stay healthy I see us in or very near the top half. I would not be surprised to see us in the top three. Just so much parity anything can happen. Injuries could be huge this year.

@Tobias We have to do this, at least the 'cut portion, in the next week b/c the schedule-makers recently did me no favors and now I'm gonna have to get another 'cut late next week or next weekend.

That also will likely take me out of getting a 'cut during that royalsPAK weekend here, but I'm hoping The King decides to take one on that I can capture.

No one really doubts that there's enough talent to be an upper half of the conference, 10 or 11 conference win team next year.

What apparently many in our fanbase don't get is that oscar Weber is coaching them.

We will finish 6th in the league and get bounced in the 1st round of the tourney and our megalomaniac AD will see this as progress and give Bruuuce more money. We are in a perpetual hellscape.
