Title: The Lake (of the Ozarks)
Post by: Phil Titola on June 25, 2015, 10:01:03 PM
What kind of weird midcoast place is this?  Lots of $$ invested but everyone living the "lake life" looks like they don't have a pot to piss in.  Help me figure it out here....

This right here. I've got 2 bros that have lake houses in their family at the zarks and I love going down for a weekend or two during the summer.

Wake up hungover and do some fishing for a couple hours, start slamming some light domestic lager around noon then take the gas guzzling boat out and "Cove Out" for 5 hours while you pound more light domestic lager.

It's really the perfect slice of Americana.

I mean come on, is there anything more American than this?

- Reshaping nature to your desire by submerging thousands of acres of pristine ozark forest behind a giant dam

- Building houses along your newly created lake

- Filling said lake with gas guzzling boats

- Driving said boats .5 miles to the nearest cove where you tie up to other boats and blast country music and pound light domestic lager

IMO George, Thomas, John and Benjamin would all have their own house around the 8 mile marker.

Have thought about buying one for my use during the summer and to rent out for all skying season as I don't ski.

Seems like if you get the right house in the right location, you could mostly pay for it purely off of ski rental.   :dunno:

yeah because if there's one thing that a person should do in their life, it is to buy a single property several hours away from with they live with the hopes that they will be able to rent it out in order to pay the mortgage.

Not exactly what the plan was.  The plan(abandonded a while ago) was to buy it along with a few other families, and rent it out when not used.

It would basically function as a time share part of the time and a VRBO type property the rest of the time.  Also, the main goal would be an awesome house for vacation.  The rental income covering what ever it covers would be a benefit too.

this really isn't a new concept, RD.

BAC, be leery of the slow play that SD may be making here. I could see him waltzing into FF16 and somebody trying to start a card game and SD saying, "Well, I guess, since it's for Fatty, deal me in." Then he cleans house and walks away with 5 large, but because he is SD, he'd just donate it back to FF.

It's good to see that this place hasn't changed since I've been gone.  Like Dobber's still totally trying to suck SD's dick.

Also the lake of the ozarks is great if you like to get away for the occasional weekend (but not drive too far) and play some golf, do some fishing, cruise around in a big boat all day while drinking beer and then staying in a really nice lake house for free cause your dumbass friends thought it would be cool to buy all that crap.

The beach is pretty cool too, but I can't drive there in less then three hours after work on Friday and be home for dinner on Sunday.   :dunno:

This thread is why I can't figure The Lake out. I mean I make one to two trips a summer there... Stay with friends at their place or rent a place.... And I always have fun. Drinking and effing around in the water is good times. I could never bring myself to invest in a place down there as I'd be too tied down to heading to The Lake every weekend.

What I can't understand is so many huge boats and houses and every person down there looks like the homeless guy I pass on my walk to work.

And good job replying to your own post

I was referring to this which has absolutely nothing to do with yours or SD's thoughts on the lake.  Thought you could have figured that out on your own, but I guess not.  Maybe you should check with SD next time before replying.  :eye:

This thread is why I can't figure The Lake out. I mean I make one to two trips a summer there... Stay with friends at their place or rent a place.... And I always have fun. Drinking and effing around in the water is good times. I could never bring myself to invest in a place down there as I'd be too tied down to heading to The Lake every weekend.

What I can't understand is so many huge boats and houses and every person down there looks like the homeless guy I pass on my walk to work.
SERIOUS ANSWER ALERT - a lot of the guys with big houses and giant boats are self made midwesterners that really don't want to wear anything but tanks and flipflops.

Tons of them are construction related business owners that started out as a typical hvac/electrician/builder or what have you and rode the Clinton economy construction boom to their White Midwestern nirvana of a 6 bd/4 bath + 3 well dock with some combo of a crusier, a go fast, a wakeboard boat, a bass boat and a handful of jet skis.

Good point!  Hey a landlock state/region needs a good body of water...."The Lake" seems to fulfill that need.  Now let's get down there and crank some CCR and Kenny Chesney and pound some ML pounders!

It was insufferable until we found that buying the "nice" double wide trailers above all the hillbilly campers wasn't expensive at all...then it was pretty fun.

Hey guys, I'd probably go to the lake with some buds and have a great time.
This thread was just kind of timely for me this week. My buddy owns a boat and he was going to some lake in Maryland today. I was giving him crap all week about how shitty of a vacation it was going to be. Plus, his boat had a leak and he was worried about getting it fixed in time for the vacation.
I was kind of playing out my real life on gE. I don't even think lakes are gross like SD does!
Lopakman, you're still a loser!

I wouldn't buy a lake house, beach house, boat, or time share though. That is for real.

Lake of the Ozarks is disgusting and horrible.  Table Rock (majestic pristine getaway for rich K-State grads) is one of the best lakes out there.  Have been going since I was a kid.  Great skiing lake and much less crowded.  Also the Corps of Engineers didn't allow trees to be pulled down near the water on Table Rock which keeps the silt out and keeps it looking like the forest it is.  Ozarks is a private late and the Corps couldn't control the deforestation which is a big reason why it's as gross as it is.

My parents just moved to their place at Table Rock full-time, going with the wife for a week tomorrow.   :excited:

http://dailynewsdig.com/worlds-most-dangerous-lakes/

Quote
Lake of the Ozarks is ranked the most dangerous lake in the United States and the third deadliest body of water only being overtaken by the Atlantic ocean and the Colorado river. There are several factors making this lake so dangerous ranging from elevated ecoli levels due to raw sewage being dumped in the lake, lack of policing, careless dock wiring and careless racing boats and cruises who like to use top speeds combined with too much alcohol creating mindless accidents and deaths. around 50 deaths occur each year and around 70% of those involve alcohol.

If the Atlantic Ocean didn't have sharks, LOZ would probably be #2.

I know ppl that are well into middle aged that go to party cove and basically use it as a swinger colony.   They take pics and show them off at BBQ's to friends and fam.  It's pretty awkward and weird and they just act like it is the best party ever.  the current bud light slogan is about 10yrs late and pretty much copied direct from party cove: down for whatever.

Apparently this shithole of a lake is closed to boat traffic due to flooding. I'm sure everyone will just cruise around on shore pulling their boats around with their jacked up pickup trucks.

Guess this is just a rumor... But may be limiting boats to no wake speed (boater term)

Lakes are great. Folks summer at a small one near Marceline MO. Great quiet lake with all the space you need to ski etc. lakes are great because quick weekend getaway. Sit on the dock or float in the water drinking beer all day and cruise the boat around. Never met anyone IRL that didn't have a good time at the lake.  Hate the inconvenience of houses being so far away from the water and most ppl sharing docks at table rock. Plus the drive is too far. Hate the huge boats, dirty water, and traffic at ozarks that is always making the weekend stressful. Make it to our lake 5-8 times a summer. The other two once a year with groups of ppl.

Man, I use to be able to find really good deals for cabins at the lake back in the day. These days, it's an easy $400 for two nights on the weekend and that's a cheap cabin off the water.  :frown: We really need to get out of town this weekend for our anniversary. She has zero PTO until August, so I have to try and make this work.  :frown:

Any pro lake tips?

 Mrs. wacky did mention either Omaha or St. Louis and I just kinda laughed. I mean, I live in KC, and these cities are like the minor league cities of the Midwest.

I swear I found a cabin where me and my bro stayed at the Lake for like $75 a night about 5 years ago and I found the same deal for Mrs. Wacky and I about two years ago at table rock. I mean, I could do that deal, if I wanted to stay with some local, stinky, lake people who are trying to rent out their upstairs. Woof. No thanks!

I just have a hard time justifying paying $400 for a place to stay at the lake, when we'll be boozing, boating, and going out to eat most of the time.

Had a good weekend. Caught a few fish off the dock. Our condo was pretty sweet. We were super close to everything. Did backwater jacks on Saturday. Went there for lunch and somehow ended up staying at their pool till 5. Went to get our uber and realized my keys were gone. This turned into a crap show (I don't think Mrs wacky responds well to adversity on rum). I went and asked management if any keys had shown up for like 30 minutes and they kept saying no. Then Mrs. Wacky thought it be a great idea to call her dad to fix the problem from KC. Somehow it takes him one call and he's got the manager on the phone, who has my keys. Shoot me in the face.

We wanted to try that Mexican spot on Sunday Phil, but they are closed on Sundays.  :frown: So we tried out a mexican joint by their outlet mall. Great ppl watching all weekend. Including Mrs. Wacky's little meltdown.

If anyone knows the lake well, i'd appreciate any pro tips from that marker. Looks like it's a pretty quick boat ride to backwater jacks. #HandySummerDays

Was at the ozarks a couple of weeks ago and our boat driver never made us wear them. Legit said "just don't tell on me on trip adviser, lol". He also snuck away from us at a bar and got super smashed with a buddy of his and we lost out on an hour of his time. They live their own world down there.

Do the passengers not wear life vests on these things? I've looked up photos of them and it doesn't look like anyone wears one.

some do, some don't. on a duck boat sinking, it would be much easier to escape without a PFD than with one. that's why it's confounding that they're still legal. it's the canopy roof that traps everybody inside. once the boat is underwater, your PFD would just keep you up against the bottom of the roof.

Every vessel like that I've been on (but never been on a duck boat) has a central place for PFDs that they in 10 seconds tell you about.

Yeah those canopies should have openings in case of emergency....but wtf did they think going out in that weather.

20 foot swells? Time to take this car boat out captained by a guy who requires you to blow on a duck horn.

Around a lot of huge open ocean boaters and they’re just gobsmacked that the weather forecast was either totally ignored or not even known.

Just terrible.
