Title: Official Tea Thread
Post by: Mrs. Gooch on April 14, 2015, 03:48:48 PM
I like to brew my iced tea using my Mr. Coffee brand Iced Tea Maker (I have one at home and one at work).

Also, I hate those fake "iced teas" that are not really brewed that some restaurants have.  :Yuck: I don't even know how they make them - from a chowder or something?

Sometimes Gooch buys some kind of already made iced tea in a jug and wastes the iced tea space in our refrigerator - but that stuff is not good.

I like the idea of sun tea, but why waste all that time when you can just brew it up in your Mr. Coffee Brand Iced Tea Maker?

I have a huge cup (KSU 3peat trophy cup from a bb game a few yrs ago).  Fill it up with cold water, add a family size bag of cold brew lipton, wait like 5 min, pound good tea, repeat like 3 times a work day.

I prefer my iced tea more like slightly cooler than room temp tea.

Someone told me recently that I drink an usually large amount of iced tea. He doesn't even know that I drink 1-2 cups of hot tea plus 2-5 glasses of iced tea per day at work.

I like sweet tea but I try to drink mostly unsweetened while at work (except the hot tea which must have milk and sweetener).

Sweet tea is the worst.  I hate that it is starting to become prevalent in KC.  I can't tell you how many times, last summer, that I stopped at a fast food place just to get a tea and ended up with a sweet tea.

"Unsweetened" sounds a lot like "Sweetened" through a shitty mic.

It's like sweet tea is the new standard.  Ugh.

Is this a tea thread or strictly just iced tea?  Because oh man how embarrassing would that be if I started talking about black tea and everyone is like this is the iced tea thread dork.

I enjoy both iced and hot tea, but sweet tea can GTFOOMF. I don't usually take the time to make my own, but after Mrs. Gooch's ringing endorsement for a Mr. Coffee Brand Iced Tea Maker I will look into.

Pure Leaf is my go to brand, but every once in a while I will go for Gold Peak.

clams' tea factoid:  all of the different types of tea (oolong, white, green, earl grey, etc) come from the same tea leaf/plant

back when i was addicted to all of the vices that life has to offer, i drank this tea-  it's pretty good.  fortunately i can now control my former addiction to caffeine but i don't really judge the poor slobs that can't because they have shitty genes and are to be felt sorry for, not mocked.

tea (milk, .5/.5 or cream and sugar) non stop like a crack fiend in the winter.  switch to almost all coffee in warmer weather.  ice tea anytime i find it for sale, but i never brew my own.  i prefer sugar or lemonade mixed in, but unsweetened is ok.  sweet tea would be fine if it was just sweetened tea, but it's like teaed sugar or something.

Post by: Mrs. Gooch on April 14, 2015, 07:44:06 PM
1. Fill the pitcher with water
2. Lift the basket and pour the water into the brewer (that colored lid opens and the basket is under there)
3. Put tea bag in basket and return to the brewer, close lid
4. Put ice in the pitcher (and sugar if desired)
5. Put the pitcher next to the brewer.
6. Push button
7. Wait.

Stevia is less sweet than sugar, but still sweet enough.

Worst thing ever is pouring a glass of milk and taking a drink only to discover that it has soured. But this is the tea thread, not the gross old milk thread.

Here's a Mr. Coffee brand Iced Tea Maker hack for you....

Instead of adding ice, just brew a double batch... (Brew as normal, less ice then refill the reservoir and brew again using the same tea bag(s) again)...this leads to a full pitcher of strong tea. You can then just add ice/water to your cup to your liking. (This works especially well if you have a water dispenser on the fridge because almost no extra work to add water to your cup but the pitcher lasts twice as long.)

I like the Chai Latte (can't remember what brand) from the Kuerig, but the regular black tea (Lipton) had a weird twang or maybe it was just way too strong. Why doesn't it have a setting for more than 10 ounces? Sometimes I just add more hot water.

Cold brew ice tea every day. I brew a pitcher at work and use my Forever Royal cup filled with ice. Never sweet.

I grew up on non-sweet tea, my mom still brews and drinks a gallon a day.

I don't mind sweet tea every now and then, but I never make it myself.

Occasionally on road trips I'll treat myself to a Snapple peach tea. :D

Sweet tea has slowly migrated north though. Even 10 years ago I can't remember very many restaurants or fast food places even having it available in Kansas, but now when you order tea almost anywhere they as if you want sweet or not.

I am also unimpressed with most of them. Can we get some rankings of bottled iced teas that are commonly seen at gas stations? I'm going to focus on type and not flavors.

1. Snapple  :dunno:
2. Lipton Pure Leaf
3. Whatever is in the carafe that the gas station employees label as freshly brewed iced tea
4. Fountain drink iced tea
5. citrus green tea  :Yuck:

Mrs. Gooch,

Have you put other types of tea in your Mr. Coffee Iced Tea Maker?

Have you put green, red, white, herbal?

I'm curious if the residue from each would bring down the quality of taste when you switch.  I don't want to have it wash it all the time when switching flavors.

It's just unnecessary. Also, there are a bunch of ridges in the bottom of the basket so it is almost impossible to get really clean.

The one at home I throw in it the dishwasher every 3-4 runs. The one at work I hand wash every 10-15 runs (because we make a lot of tea runs with 3 of us drinking it) and then take it home to the dishwasher every couple months or so.

I know she brews a lot; maybe not a gallon anymore, but I'd say 2 quarts minimum, probably closer to 3. When I was a kid she had a gallon jar she brewed every day.

Most days, yes. She doesn't really drink anything else like coffee or soda. One of the first things she does every morning is make a pitcher of ice tea and drink from a 20 oz cup all day. I'd say she goes through 3-4 per day easily.

Our office was gifted a liter of Tejava: unsweetened, premium iced tea, 100% handpicked from the island of Java, microbrewed, North American tea champion 2011-2014.

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000RELFWQ (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000RELFWQ)

It is really good. Strong, undiluted flavor.

Would I pay $64 for another liter? I would not.

Sometimes I like an Arnold Palmer.  Funny story about an Arnold Palmer.  I was at the gas station a few weeks ago and they had a liter bottle that was an Arnold Palmer for 99 cents.  I looked at the back and it said 11 grams of sugar.  I was like wow that's not much sugar.  Then I drank all of it and wow that was really sweet then I looked at the back again and it said 11 grams of sugar per serving and there were 5 servings in a bottle lol.  End of story.

Title: Re: Official Tea Thread
Post by: CNS on January 18, 2017, 09:29:51 AM
I have made it a few times but stopped.  I liked it if I put it in the fridge early, when it still had a decent amt of sugar in it.  I didn't like it if I let it ferment much longer than 7-9days, iirc.

Also, I liked to cut up fresh peaches or nectarines and put it in there when I fridge'ed it.

That said, it was pretty sweet at that point and just adds sugar to my diet.  I figured I could get benefits of fermentation from eating other veg ferments I do and skipped the kombucha.  Also, I found that it is much more of a pain in the ass than other fermentation.

GTs is the most common I see around here. Gingerade and citrus are both fairly mild...trilogy, gingerberry, and cosmic cranberry are a little more bold. Pro tip: the lids are not sealed liquid-tight so don't shake it and make sure the person doing check out handles it with care BC if they just slide it across the scanner and roll it down to get bagged it will explode and make a huge sticky mess

Vinegar.  You need to know going into this that you will experience, at absolute very least, a small amt of vinegar hiding behind whatever flavor you are being sold.

Go find the cashew milk, rice milk, etc.  If you find that and saw a bunch of gluten free stuff on your way to that cooler, you are in the right place.  Most look like a snapple drink.

I mean the bacteria (or yeast or whatever) is literally just sitting at the bottom of the bottle and it kind of looks like someone sneezed into the bottle. But somehow you can drink it without noticing the texture. Not sure how that's possible but just drink the whole bottle, snot included. That's the stuff that's good for your gut.

I like sun tea. Mrs SSOC got this old 1gallon glass pickle jar at an antique store. I fill it up with water from the RO and four Lipton or Luzianne 1QT teabags. Let it sit in direct sunlight for about 4 hrs and then pour over a large plastic cup full of ice cubes. Very refreshing after doing yardwork during the summer.

I think sweetened ice tea is gross.

During the winter, I like to drink Bigelow Vanilla Chai blend - about 3 parts hot tea with 1 part half and half or cream (or Evan Williams depending on the time of day). Very good winter drink.

It is national tea day and I am sipping a dandelion after an english breakfast.  I want to roll with some high end herbal iced tea this summer.  I need your reccomendos here.

I'm big on Rooibos.  Specifically, Celestial Seasonings Madagascar Vanilla Rooibos tea:  http://www.celestialseasonings.com/products/rooibos/madagascar-vanilla-rooibos

Throw a few bags of that into a 1/2 gallon glass milk jug, fill with water and just brew it in the fridge.  Good stuff.

I do a combo of the Rooibos with Celestial Seasonings Sleepytime for that evening iced tea, usually about one glass and I'm ready for bed.

Guys, this is my old standby.  Take a large 30/32 oz microwave safe glass and fill with filtered water to about an inch below the top.  Add four of your favorite brew tea, I like Lipton, and put in the glass and cook on high for 5 minutes.  Grab a half gal pitcher, preferably glass or anything that can hold hot water without braking and load about 3/4 up with ice.  After the tea has brewed for around 3 to five minutes, depending how strong you want it, pour over a punctured lemon with about 6 to 8 ice pick holes setting on top of the ice.  Take the used tea bags and put them in the large glass with water and let set about 5 to 10 minutes.  By this time most of the ice is melted and add whatever it takes to fill the pitcher from the glass.  It's ready to drink; just pour into the glass you were using and add ice.  Put the picture in the fridge and should be good for about three/four days if it ever lasts that long.   :lick: :drink:

Passranch, that is what I was drinking today  :D

my only thing on it is like I dunno if I should care about micro plastics or not with their tea bags (I assume they do a ultrasonic weld with some sort of plastic on the bag edges), I like that they don't have the string, staple and tag tho. That blend + some milk is really good to pair with baked goods/sweets

Yeah, and it's really good in the morning with a breakfast bar.  I get through a mess of this stuff.

I used to pound southern style iced tea. Then I grew up. Now I just want a little lemon twist. No sugar.

I’ve made a couple batches of iced tea in the fridge. I steep it in the glass container that came with my cold brew coffee maker. Combine two quarts of filtered h2o with two Luzianne tea bags and let it steep in the fridge for twelve hours. Very smooth and refreshing.

I'd like to do something like this, but I'm a tea n00b. Before I graduate to an advanced recipe like this, are there any simpler ones I can try just to get my feet wet?

Mrs. Hamburg volunteers with some Afghan refugees and they introduced her to milk tea. She is now obsessed.

It's a avocado, hemp flower , hemp leaf, moringa, tulsi, and coconut piece blend.  Pretty hippie, but no potency in this.
