I know there was some discussion in the diet thread about this topic ( http://goEMAW.com/forum/index.php?topic=28324.msg888919#msg888919 ). Just wondering if CNS is still using his setup and if any of you other desk jockeys are utilizing standing desks. I have been seriously considering it as I believe sitting my fat ass in a desk chair for 10 hrs a day is killing my back/hips. I found this model on amazon which seems to be a pretty good deal.

Maybe I should get one of those balls to sit on.

The one I posted above converts. They say in 3 seconds.
-
I find it really hard to type standing up
-
I've known a few who tried, but didn't stick with them.
-
Pretty weird that there are two threads for this.
-
My guy uses his all day.
Gonna win 'em all!

Point me in the right direction. I used the almighty search function and only came up with the few comments CNS posted in the diet thread. I didn't see anymore discussion regarding how people liked them or if they had a preference to a particular model, etc.
-
are you buying it with your own money or is your job buying it?
-
Been doing it for a yr and a half.
-
When you are standing at your desk, do you just stand there or do you do calf raises and stuff?
-
are you buying it with your own money or is your job buying it?
I will be purchasing it.
-
Been doing it for a yr and a half.
Do you find that you feel better than you did sitting at your desk? Any other benefits?
-
Yes. More energy all around. Main thing is not 2pm crash. Also, I work faster and stay focused more.
Also, no calf raises.

Pretty tiring for the first month or so until you get used to it.

maybe combine them somehow into just one single joke? :dunno:

I can't imagine standing all day long. I'd be going to the bathroom a lot just to sit down.

You can get ones that raise and lower. So when your posture sitting gets terrible, you stand. When standing hurts, you sit.
-
Can't believe I got drawn into this convo btw.

I built some nice cherry risers for a couple dudes at work, they seem to like it #woodworkingthread
Also there is one desk that was built at standing height and the guy at it just sits in a super high chair

They're cool if you're a mad scientist or something.
-
I use one in my home office. When I get tired, I sit for a few on the recliner. Agree that I'm more focused when using the standing desk.
-
Ours at work raise and lower electronically. Essentially they raise one half of our desks so you can go to any height you want at the push of a button

If you are 6'4"+, get the one without the keyboard tray...think it's the Pro...although now they have a bigger "48" model I see. I tried the one with the keyboard tray and it was too low. We've had a few in our office for like a year now...they are pretty awesome especially for the price.

New idea- standing couch
-
Wrist can hurt if keyboard tray makes your hand/wrist angle bending backwards (picture opposite of when gays do the limp wrist thing)

Sounds like the one with the keyboard tray will work fine for me. Thanks for the input.

Ikea makes a really nice electronic one that raises and lowers easily, but it costs like $400. I'm putting a standing desk into my office for about $50. Having the option of sitting is a must. It's very difficult to stand for 8 hours at a time for an office job.
-
I actually just built myself a standing desk that is 7 ft tall so I can stand on my desk chair while I work because I still want to be able to swivel.
-
Everyone I work with that has used a standing desk has eventually gone back to the sitting master race.

Challenge accepted. Short of some sort of disability or old age, I don't plan to.

It's not for everybody, which makes the varidesk nice since you can move it easily to someone who wants it. I'm on 6 months now and I don't see going back.
one key I forgot is to get a gel mat....especially if you wear dress shoes all day.

Definitely going to need one of those. Our floors are stained concrete.

With all of the joints on that contraption, I'll bet you can stand, kneel, lay down, or even sit with it!
Gonna win 'em all!

Just got this bad boy set up in my office. I can say it is better than I expected.

Well all those chairs you have in there for guests seem pretty much useless since they won't be able to see you behind that desk setup.

Had one over a year....still very sturdy and loving it.

I have had one for quite awhile as well. It is nice to have the flexibility to lower it if you want to depending on what you are working on. Very sturdy.
-
I still have my desk up. 2.5 yrs now, iirc. Get a bar stool. Gives you the ability to sit if you have to, but not so comfy that you will stay on it. Gets you back up shortly.
Also, get a fatigue mat for the feet. They are great.

Our new office building is complete with standing desks for everyone, hopefully my building gets them soon...
-
What in the world is it that you guys hate so much about sitting? Might as well get a job in retail if you're going to stand all day
-
Exactly. Need to start a thread about how luxurious your office chair is.
-
I do a full lean back when I'm doing computer stuff. It's like laying down all day
-
I fall asleep when I sit down long. Before standing, my afternoons were like an enhanced interrogation including sleep deprivation.

More attentive and productive when I stand... And generally more comfortable... I mean not like all day... But probably 25-50% depending on last night's pak level.

Same. I have a phone headset. It all works great. Phil is correct about thinking better on feet, imo.

I see it as breaking up the time sitting down, like an hour or so morning and afternoon. Sitting ofr hours is terrible for you anyways, and I always find exbruces to get up and walk, having something to do that where I can stay at the desk and be productive, while not sitting would be pretty amazing.
-
I usually just get up like once an hour and call that good
-
I run out of coffee frequently so I have to get up for refills and bathroom breaks a lot

standing desks are for nerds. you guys are nerds.

This thread already has some good advice so I didn't want to start a new one.
My back has been hurting and it's probably because I have poor posture when I sit. I don't really want a standing desk though. I've been thinking about getting a balance ball to use instead of my chair.
What have you guys used or have now that you like? I've looked at just the ball and they have some that have the ball in like a stand with a back. Don't really know which one I would like. Any advice would be great!
I'm 6'4" so that complicates things from the little research I have done so far. Anything over like 5'11" is a little harder to get right I've read.
-
every desk in our massive company is going to sit/stand. millions of dollars to do this. I'm like, just get me a million dollar desks and let everyone else sit like they're going to anyway and save the rest of that green.

Every time I go over to our new building with standing desks there are a legit 50% of people standing. It is a lot of $$ for sure, but people use the crap out of it.

Show them the pic of my desk ITT and tell then I will convert all the desks in your company for like 20% less than that other type of desk will cost them.

They getting a break on health insurance? Wouldn't be shocked.
I use my standing desk about 2 hrs / day on average (had it for about 5 months now), but my office neighbor who has had his for longer barely uses it at all anymore.
-
Does anyone ever sit at their standing desk and pretend they're a little kid? That would be pretty funny
-
Probably should have clarified mine is a sit/stand one. Standing all day isn't much better for you than sitting all day.
-
i would demand a laydown desk, preferably one that doesn't need a keyboard
-
This is all good stuff guys, keep it coming

Me too, it eliminated all neck and back pain from sitting.

-
In a cost cutting measure my company eliminated all computers, and then decided we don't need desks anymore. Still get chairs, tho. We're not animals.
-
I lean all the way back in my chair, it's basically like laying down and my neck/back never hurt
-
One company that I used to work for (after I left) eliminated chairs in meeting rooms so that all meetings were standing so that people didn't waste time in meetings. I don't think that lasted too long....well actually the company got sold and now doesn't even exist.

How do you keep the monitor/keyboard/mouse from falling on your face?
-
It's on the desk
-
Standing desks are what happens when a "Hey guys who buy crap for work!" interaction goes horribly wrong.
-
Now imagine I'm fully leaned back (about 60 degrees pry) and slid into the corner all the way. It's extremely comfortable.

i want to eliminate desks altogether. i want a hammock.
-
pry
:curse:
Also, doesn't seem like the angle of your face to the screen is best for viewing. (Needs to be above your head like in that video I posted.)
-
I have no monitor placement problems. They are set as low as possible, I could raise them like a foot if it was more comfortable
-
I use mine everyday...probably about a 40% standing/60% sitting ratio.
-
Do any of you guys do like squats or calf raises while standing at your desk?
-
Nope, but I do squats and deadlifts at the gym.

So my back quit hurting because I decided I had better genes then that and ended up not getting a balance ball.
However now I kind of want a standing desk. Thoughts from the early adopters? Still like it? I also can't get a varidesk(not allowed) so if I go standing desk it's not coming back down for awhile. We already have high sitting chairs for our break area places and I can just snag one if I want to sit for a while. Thoughts?
-
I don't think I'd like standing all day but I'm team varidesk Soni have that option to move back and forth.
-
Regarding the option of sitting in a tall chair, you should do some research on the effects of sitting without proper foot support (i.e. the ground).

Even if we could get varidesks I have 3 monitors and I've never seen one that supports that anyway. Would be nice to have the option tho.
The tall chairs have like a bar I could rest my feet on but it wouldn't be the same probably. I've also looked at these weird ass chairs that combine sitting and standing at the same time(but with ground foot support).

One of the engineers at my work has 3 30" monitors on one of those versidesk things
-
The Varidesks are very heavy. I assume you could put one monitor in the middle and then mount two to the edges with some sort of mount the extends out to each side. I still like mine and bounce in between sitting and standing quite a bit depending on how I feel.

I will say even the varidesk is hard to get tall enough if you are over 6'2", especially when you add dress shoes and foam standing mat.

that one is electric and goes to 48" which is pretty tall for the keyboard

Still liking my varidesk. Even if you mostly sit, it's great to be able to stand up for a while to get some extra blood flow going.
