It's awful. When I think of family I think of a bunch of people who hate each other and eat dinner together.

I'm sorry you suck at message boarding and as a k-state fan.
Back to the topic tho...

When recruiting kids, families eat this kind of crap up. It can't happen, Winters. It just can't!

Winter gE is your family. Do you want to dump us?

This is quite fair. I've just been told a couple stories in which players (maybe somewhat highly touted recruits) felt disconnected to the "family" and didn't think k-state truly understood what that meant. This is probably just a rare occurrence. I'm also just a weirdo who doesn't like it anyway because it's cliche'. Go Cats, tho!

We are a goodbuddy family until the end

It's cliche and cheesy, no doubt. Personally, I tire of it, but what wacky says is true. It's also not terrible branding, but rather terrific. Though some of us may not like it, and those outside K-State may guffaw at it, none of that really matters. Most people associated with K-State love the message and folksy nature of it.
@winters, I'd like to hear more about people not feeling the family vibe.

FAMILY is not an acronym, it's a lifestyle.

Would you rather have athletes playing for your alma matter who want to eat the faces of their opponents or athletes who call their mom every night to have a bedtime story read to them?

gang
family is pussy crap. anyone can join a family, but i bet maybe 2 people from this bbs board could withstand a gang initiation. plus, gangs look out for each other and you're in a gang for life. there is no way out. and, i doubt many families could put a beat down on a gang.

Let's change our mascot to the feral cats. There is nothing meaner or nastier than a feral cat. All a feral cat does is fight, eff, kill and sleep. Nobody fucks with a feral cat, not even a junkyard dog.

What's awful about it?
The majority of our fan base is stupid, ugly and smelly. My entire family is intelligent, attractive and good-smelling. I'm not related to any stupid, ugly or smelly people. Therefore, family = awful branding.

whatever we replace this with, be sure to consider the size of wood we will be dealing with.

I'm on board with #TheGang strictly because of watching the Buttercream Gang in grade school.

Yeah, everyone seems to embrace it, the players say they feel it, so why stop.
-
Bill wanted it on the stadium. It's here to stay
-
"It really is a family." That's like what every rough ridin' recruit says. So until we stop being such a family I guess we are stuck with it.
-
While we're at it, let's stop having big asphalt parking lots, let's stop doing tomahawk chop dick sucking WC thing, let's stop farm humping. Just knock it all off wildcats.
-
Bill thinks we're family. If you don't wanna be family members with LHC Bill Snyder than you can gtfo you guys.
-
i am kind of indifferent on it, i mean its good for recruits, and if you just go with the flow its good for the average ksu student/fan. i also know families fight and get pissed at each other sometimes too. indifferent.
-
you think you know more about family than bill synder you son of a bitch?!?

DISCUSS BELOW
I have no idea if that's an accurate vibe relative to the atmosphere in the program, but it's a synergistic and smart marketing ploy given the stadium name and the limitations of recruiting to Manhattan.
-
I don't like it either, but for different reasons.
It is good marketing/branding/pr/whatever bs.
But it demeans the word "family." I feel a kinship with fellow K-staters (even the degenerates on this board), but we ain't family.

i mean, do you even... never the eff mind
-
I feel like the "family" focus only reinforces our hayseed roots. Something we should try to avoid with recruits, but maybe play up with the big donors? I'm torn (but really, I hate it).
-
Family can mean lots of things, you can choose a new family if you want.
-
But I don't think it's a very unique "brand" or sales pitch or whatever.
-
But I don't think it's a very unique "brand" or sales pitch or whatever.
It's not unique, but it is a clever way to use the hayseed/ag school stereotype K-State has as an advantage. Bazooka Joe as QB will be the biggest joke/marketing tool of them all.
-
I've always thought it was soft sounding.
It would be okay though if it was just on the stadium and not on the stick though. I actually like RPs practice of Old Glory and the Ad Astra better.
-

yes, very fox news'y
-
I don't think it's hayseedy at all. I almost think of it as a message to recruits who wouldn't be as comfortable in a traditional college town or being far from home. Like "we aren't in a major metropolis, but you'll have a family here".
People really think it's an ag school thing?
-
Family is great, guys.

Yeah, it's not hayseedy at all. If anything it's overused in sports, but if the guys really buy into it I think it's good for your program. I think at K-State for the most part our guys do buy in and its a staple of our program, so it works. The fans are just along for the ride.

"Let's change up our old slogans/traditions/uniforms to something more exciting."
Said every small-timey program no one cares about.
Not saying it hasn't benefited some programs (at least in the short term), but this is definitely a small-timey way of thinking.
-
Maybe we should change it to just "best friends" or "really good friends".
-
Maybe we should change it to just "best friends" or "really good friends".
I like this.
Or maybe "best friends until 7th grade when you joined the football team, and he joined the band. So now it's awkward & you just give each other the head nod every time you see each other"
-
The tucks use family like a badge of honor. When we get a new recruit, welcome to the FAMILY! When a recruit flips on us, he doesn't want to be part of the FAMILY. If you openly criticize Weber, Currie, or Snyd, you don't deserve to be pay off the FAMILY. They always capitalize FAMILY.
-

I do agree it has been effective, thanks to Snyder. That being the case, you can emphasize family without putting it on the stick or emphasizing it to the degree that it just sounds like cheap propaganda. I'm fairly certain every single program plays the family card on the recruiting trail. Don't underestimate how much playing up "family" really does appease the fanbase. Which to me, is a little hayseed-y.
-
i like the family stuff after we win, and hate it after we lose. like after the alamo bowl i think i said "but we're still a family hur hur" all sarcastic like an bad person about a hundred times.
-
Was FAMILY a thing before they named the stadium after Bill and his family? I'd always assumed that is where it got started.
-
It started when I was in school back in 1987. There were only a few hundred people at the football games and it was said to be "the size of a family reunion". The name stuck from there yard dog.
-

No, it started earlier, back in the '70s when it was said that the only people to show up to games were actually just the families of the staff and players. It kinda went on from there.

It's definitely extremely tucky and honestly kinda small-timey and the rest of the country probably rolls their eyes at how dorky and family values'y and heartland'y it all is. But if it helps us convince MCMW parents to send their kids here, then w/e, I'm cool with it.

I don't mind the family thing . . . what is disturbing is how that spills over into all the feel good'ism etc. etc. ingrained in the fact that we can't recruit anybody that can beat out walk-ons

THIS!!! There's nothing more frustrating than hearing some sportscaster talk about our fine walk-ons, when deep down they are making fun of our inability to recruit scholarship athletes that are worth a crap.
