Title: Long John Silver's
Post by: AppleJack on December 16, 2014, 09:55:18 PM
One time, about 15 years ago, I ate lunch at a Long John Silver's. I remember they had a bell by the door that you could ring if the service was good or something. Hushpuppies are great. I haven't been back since. Is Captain D's still a thing?

Thoughts?

I remember seeing Ken Turner there on two different occasions. My friend and I joked about how he probably ate there all of the time and was super unhealthy and was going to have a heart attack. It was not long after that he died of a heart attack. Real hilarious, huh? Maybe next time you guys will think twice before you start making jokes about LJS.

It's the kind of place I try every two years or so only to realize why I only try it so sporadically. Was going to swing by the LJS earlier this fall, but their drive-thru intercom was broken and you had to order at the window. I pull up and wait, then honk, then wait ... no service. There was a family of three in the dining room and one guy mopping the floor.

Guess I'll try again in 2016.

I'm Catholic and I haven't been to an LJS in over 15 years. Really telling that ol' Sprac is aware of fish flavored French fries. Sorry Spacne. If you ever come out to NC, I'll take you to McDonalds and we can order fish sandwich combos without the fear of fish flavored French fries.

Gonna win 'em all!

I cherish LJS.  I normally do not like fish, but I love LJS fish. Probably because it does not taste like fish.  It's a delivery mechanism for batter.

I get 2 piece fish with hush puppies, and add a fish. Before eating the fish, i drench it in malt vinegar.

Every time I eat at Long John Silvers it takes me a little bit longer to recover.  I haven't been in about 2 years and I don't know if my body is ready for another trip yet.  I also do the thing Pete does by drenching the fish with malt vinegar.

A side order of crumbs is essential for any LJS visit.  Sometimes they charge you, sometimes they don't.

Wasn't there one on third street back in the day?

If so, the last time I ate there was 2000, and it was the third or fourth consecutive time that I ate it and had a massive stomach ache after.  Haven't been back since.

I may give it a try again.  I think there's one off of 135th and Antioch.

I don't even get fries there, I sub extra hush puppies.  Also, I always ask for an extra plate/tray thing.  It is on the extra plate that I douse the fish with the malt vinegar.  This must be kept separate from the puppies and crispies.

Pete took pictures of the food. He'll blog them, but was going home to nap first. He had 3 fish whatevers and 10 hush puppies and a bunch of fried brown batter chips. I had the fish and shrimp platter with fries and 'slaw. 'Slaw was ok. Fish was good, shrimp was good, fries were not that good. Hush pups were good and I ate the 2 on my plate and like 3 of Pete's.

Pete's fish consumption technique is amazing. He places each fish in a basket, one at a time, and pokes holes in it with his fork. Then he pours I think 20 or 30 oz of malt vinegar on it and destroys it. Its a sight to see.

We also each had a refillable frosty A&W mug.

All in all the service was good. Great day to be a wildcat.

Like, I feel really awful. I'm sitting in a chair and out of breath and full and kinda sweaty and its cold in here. The inside of my mouth feels like someone sprayed pam all around in there and then salted it and then coated it with old butter. My shirt has grease drops on it. My heart is beating too fast and I'm unbelievably thirsty.

I had a buddy in high school who pete'd his way through fish in individual paper boats, just flooding that boat with malt vinegar.  I thought he was mentally disturbed, we'd  have 6 guys just aitting around watching him like a freak show all too horrified to look away.   Now i feel bad for shaming him, he has dreads now.  Probably related

That first plate is mine.  I subbed pups for my sides, and had no idea that would make me end up with 10 pups!  I could only eat like four.  Cartier got the shrimp combo.  FWIW, he says that their tartar sauce is not good.

I just woke up from a nap a bit ago.  I really recommend taking a 3 hour nap after a big LJS run.

Two more things.  First, we were sorta joking around with the cashier while we ordered, and I think he gave me the hookup on those crispies in my add-a-fish.  It was the mother load.  Second, if you guys are serious about eating fish, they have all you can eat fish for $8.99 every Friday over lunch before dinner...for you catholic pot heads out there, file that away for lent!

I went to LJS with Pete years ago. He got hush puppies as sides back then, too, and used the same line: "I had no idea I'd get ten!" I informed him that he could just order them by the dozen. He was like, "Really!!? Oh, yeah, I, uh, knew that." Then, he got up and went to order a dozen to go!

It's a matter of degree. Food makes one defecate. Bad food makes one defecate excessively, and perhaps unpredictably and uncontrollably. Once warned about a place, I will avoid it.

Went to MHK's super-fancy location today. Got the chicken and fish combo with a side of slaw. It was delicious. The battered meat was great and fried perfectly. The crispies, oh my! I love LJS but only eat it once every 6 months to a year. I get the fish/chicken combo, it's heaven while I'm eating it but when I'm done I am immediately filled with regret. I feel like I could be minutes from a heart attack. Also a sign to just how bad LJS is that I absolutely cannot stand fish or seafood of any kind. I frequently vacation in New Orleans, I lived in Massachusetts and Maine, but all food out of the water taste the same. Catfish, alligator, salmon, lobster; I really taste very little difference. LJS though is not fish, it's deep fat fried goodness wrapped in regret.

I'm gonna have to go eat LJS this week just because of this thread. I think the last time I ate there was the old one before they tore it down. I went to school with some of the guys that worked there and they used to give us free food and make the worlds largest hush puppies and not charge. Someone even got fired and would still go in and cook his own food then leave, after he was no longer employed there. Probably why the old one closed.

The mhk LJS is seriously the best one in the world.
could this be what is keeping mhk from fulfilling its Red Lobster manifest destiny?

Probably why the old one closed.

Heh yeah. They actually put  typed  signs up that said they closed because shitty employees were out of control and they were losing too much money.

I've asked for my money back once after waiting 20+ minutes for my order and not getting it.  It was at the old mkh ljs.  I was the only one in the store.

I love LJS but only eat it once every 6 months to a year. I get the fish/chicken combo, it's heaven while I'm eating it but when I'm done I am immediately filled with regret. I feel like I could be minutes from a heart attack.

The LJS/A&W combos are the worst.  I can't help but get the fish/chicken combo with A&W cheddar bites for my side.  The addition of fried cheese makes it worse.

One time in high school me and a couple of friends hit the LJS drive thru on our way to a movie and a guy we knew gave us a whole bunch of crumbs since it was close to closing time.  We smuggled the crumbs into the theater as our snack.  I'm sure the other people in there hated us because of the incredibly loud crunching sounds as well as making the entire theater reek of grease.

Classic chicken OD.   Need to balance that with some clams or shrimp next time.  Our bodies just aren't meant to be all chicken all the time

I saw the fried Twinkies advertised on their sign the other day when I drove by.

Also, I can't believe there is a thread for LJS. And that it's eight pages!

My step-sister and her daughter just got food poisoning (they claim) from LJS last week. So if you are in Coffeyville, maybe don't eat there.

The McDonalds refused me service once because I “walked” through the drive thru.  Seriously.

The dorms are literally across the street.  You want me to drive drunk across the street to your establishment and get me arrested?  NO.  Your lobby is closed, I waited in line, with other cars behind me, to get food, and you won’t take my money.  eff McDonalds.

We don’t have a McDonalds thread so I felt my frustration should be observed here ITT.

For those unaware, the McD’s response was to the Chings(first reported by Mrs. Gooch) coffeyville post.

I know someone who works at that McD. I'm going to ask her what the official drive thru policy is.
