Had a very memorable "hunt" during the running season in NE Missouri with a family friend once when I was in high school.  Got turned around in the dark and ended up coming out where we thought the truck was, only to be about 4-5 miles away from the truck.  Also ended up walking through about a hundred yards of chest high stinging nettles that night.

PS - WTF is running game?

How often do you drain the fat?  Coons and possum both have boatloads of fat, if you don't cook them properly, the meat is extremely greasy.  Not trying to imply you don't know that, asking out of cuisine curiousity.

Understood, but how?  You get a hound to just chaise it up a tree?  Then no guns? What do you do then?  I'm genuinely curious.

Coon hunting involves chopping down a tree once you have treed the coon. That alone sounds like a deal breake for me.

some people shoot the raccoon and take its skin.  some people sit around drinking and say "them dogs sure sound pretty tonight'" and then go home.

Pro tip: spotlighting 'coons is illegal. Using your spotlight to find your 'coon dog is not illegal.

Gonna win 'em all!

Use an open choke with 8 shot and you can get more than one at once. It won't kill em but they'll fall and your dogs are happy to finish the job. I've knocked down two at once but one of my older brothers got four in one shot.
