Title: State your expectations for the season here:
Post by: CHONGS on October 08, 2014, 03:40:10 PM
COME YE ALL AND POST YE EXPECTATIONS!

I, for one, do NOT think it is unreasonable that the KSU CATS CATS CATS should win the conference. Yes I said it, win the conference. Anything more than 4 conference losses is a NOT GREAT.  I mean I won't kill myself if dem Cats lose 5 conference games, but my ass will get a pinkish hue. 6 losses you say?  Still not a disaster, but disappointing. SEVEN LOSES?! Signal the red ass alarm because my ass will be smoking.

ADDITIONALLY!

I demand, DEMAND, an NCAA tournament win.  I will not be greedy this year and request two as would be expected of a conference champion, but I will be sated with one.

If, I Chingon F. Kayessyou, get out of line later this year with regards to expectations please fling this directly into my face.

Any additional conditions rendered by myself in this thread (and it only officially counts in this thread) should be considered appended in addition to the above!  This is contingent on the time stamp of the aforementioned post being BEFORE the start of the basketball season (men's).

great season.....if:

Hurt rumored to be out of shape out of juco....only played 15 mins/game. Why? Fat?
Malik and Wesley rumored to have added weight.  eating pudding cups kinda weight or kc strips kinda weight?
Edwards rumored to be some basketball god of an athlete. won't fill expectations? Uh oh.......
Thomas' FT shooting....can he bring it up from .0876548% to the 30% range, at least...which is still sucky?
Jack Krap.......oh well, nevermind...

Great thread Chingon!

Team Expectations:
1) An entertaining brand of basketball (subjective, evaluated by my Peggy Po's/Nancy Neg's column)
2) non-con:
-Win all Home and the Home/Neutral game vs. A&M
-3rd Place or better in Maui
     -Continue to own the Beach
3) conference:
     -at least 3rd place
     -Win 8/9 of home games
     -Win 6/9 of road games
4) tourney(s):
     -play to seed

My expectations will met with a top 3 finish and win in the torn a ment.

I too believe this team has potential to contend in what I think will be a conference without a great team.

If oscar loses in the first round again he should walk back to MHK from which ever site he shames us.

Just remember what you write in here is written in STONE.  STONE that might get thrown back in your face if you a) whine despite the team exceeding your expectos or b) go all Iowan on us and start accepting less.

DISCLAIMER:

Yes I know I am not I) an Athletic Director and II) nothing posted in here really matters in the big scheme of things, and III) we are all likely dumb asses (especially me).  This is for fun and for me to throw things back into people faces so I can win at the internet when it comes to KSU sports related matters.

Thank you for your cooperation.

We should be .500 after Muai.  We will be known as Ass-stompers during  non-con.  We will win the Big 12 war due to our adaptability to play differnt syles, depth, experinced players who have played together, and our masters of death who can kill off other teams at will such as Foster.   The Birdies will be plucked twice. We will be playing at least to elite 8.  Weber gets more love.

Thursday at the big 12, ncaa bid, ranked.  This will be tough but if oscar is as good as I think he is, he will pull these off.  His challenge will be getting consistent offense out of these cats, if he has to use Marcus at the point that will be a bad sign.  oscar will have to work some serious magic and either find one or two more proficient shooters on the perimeter, find a way to get points in the paint against quality teams, or have recruited well enough to fill these shortcomings.  If he meets some of the higher expectos in this thread he will prolly be coach of the year.

Barnes looks like he he is getting it back together.  I won't ever be surprised if Hugs or Lonnie has a top 3ish squad.  This conference won't likely have any elite teams but only TCU and TT look to be bad.

Yeah, this.

Making tourney runs is great. See 2010.

Of course it's great. But coaches shouldn't be judged for their performance in a single elimination tournament. If oscar is getting us into the tournament every year, he's doing fine, and anything beyond that is just gravy.

I think if you're getting into the tourney every year those seasons will happen on their own. No one gets in as a ten seed every year with any consistency.

So basically, my requirements aren't that different than yours, I just don't worry about year to year specifics or judge an entire season (or career) based on the results of one or two games

Well at some point to have to win in the tournament.  I mean, the tournament is the only thing that matters in college basketball.  Why on earth would  you not judge a coached based on the tournament?  I'm fine with it not mattering to you but it really needs to matter to you because I'm not fine with it.

Also, I really dislike people that don't put any weight on what we do in conference.

Are you serious?

OU will be good, ISU will be good, UT will be good.  You know, the teams we finished behind last year.

I guess I expect us to get better (given what we return) and ISU and OU to not be as good (given what they lost). UT, I suppose.  forgot about myles turner.

what is it that you think we return?

Well at some point to have to win in the tournament.  I mean, the tournament is the only thing that matters in college basketball.  Why on earth would  you not judge a coached based on the tournament?

Small sample size and your performance is basically a crapshoot.

I mean, if it's all that matters, why would you accept anything less than winning the whole damn thing?

I could see ISU being really good that have a lot of pieces that have a chance to be really good players, one thing that they don't have that Fred has always is quality amount of good shooters. They are changing their offense this year because of that. This could be Fred's most athletic team, maybe they finally defend.

My same expectations I've had since we had Frank, challenge for regular conference title, win at least one tourny conference game, and make it to the second weekend of NCAAs. FWIW I was totally down on last year's team before we even played a game, I'm that up about this year's team. I haven't been this excited for a basketball season since 2011.

Expectations need to be set with a ceiling and a floor. For instance, we should make the tourney every year and one in every four we should reach a sweet 16. Also we should be fun to watch.

Last year, we swept TCU and Tech and we got swept by Baylor. We split with everyone else. I think this year is exactly the same, except we win one vs Baylor. 11-7.

I think a reasonable goal is 11-2 in noncon. This includes 4-2 overall in the three games in Maui, the roadie to Tenn, the neutral vs A&M and the home game vs UGA, along with Sweeping all thescrubs.

22-9 going into the Big 12 tourney and solidly in the NCAA field.

Teams we'll sweep in conf: tcu, ttu, wvu, ut, osu.
Team we'll probably split with: bu, ou, ku, isu

Assuming we go 13-1, or whatevs, ooc and 14-4 conf., we should be ~29-6 (1 or 2 wins and or a loss in the big 12) a 2 or a 3 seed in the ncaa.  Would be a good year and good shot at the S16

Team Expectations:
1) An entertaining brand of basketball (subjective, evaluated by my Peggy Po's/Nancy Neg's column)
2) non-con:
-Win all Home and the Home/Neutral game vs. A&M
-3rd Place or better in Maui
     -Continue to own the Beach
3) conference:
     -at least 3rd place
     -Win 8/9 of home games
     -Win 6/9 of road games
4) tourney(s):
     -play to seed

This guy "gets it."  Huge ditto for me on this.   Play to the seed!

2 - oscar will coach em up and we'll lose in the second round of the Big 12 tournament.

3 - oscar will coach em up and we'll lose to LaSalle in the Big Dance with oscar inexplicably keeping a timeout in his back pocket.

4 - Shirt tucks will emphasize how oscar is superior in all ways that conservative, white pasties predictably would.

5 - Sane people will miss Frank.

6 - Insane people will tell sane people to move on.

 1) Top 3 finish in Big 12
2) top 4 seed in the NCAA
3) make it to the 2nd weekend.

If we made it to the Sweet 16, it will get a good year. I just want to get to that spot and see what happens.

IMO, this is a top 20 BB team. That should be able to get a 4/5 seed and hopefully win 2 games and play in the Sweet 16 game.

It's early and premature, but I believe we will be a top 10 team in 2015-16. And will be as good as the 2009-10 team

Hey Chingon.  If you go back and look at my expectations you will see that for the non-con I had 3 expectations.  One of them we have not met (continue to own the beach) but that was the least important one!

If we beat Zona we will achieve priority #2 and priority #1 is probably the easiest one to meet so that is pretty good!

I'm not sure 20 wins is a good standard anymore for the NCAA since everyone plays some sort of holiday/preseason tournament.

You've got to be above .500 and have some decent wins to get selected by the NIT. The NIT has their own selection committee with seeding now, so you just don't get invited if it looks like you can sell tickets for home games as a power 5 school.

We would have to become the most inaccurate KenPom analysis/prediction in history, right?

I doubt it, we still have 2/3 of the season left.

Also, while I'm pretty discouraged about how this season has started, I think this team will get better. Probably not NCAA tournament, but I think .500 in the league is still a reasonable expectation.

So. . .we get swept by KU, UT, and ISU and split with Baylor, West Virginia, and OU. That puts our conference record at 9-9.

Final record 18-13.

Top 4 seed in the NIT.

Extra home game at the Fred.  :excited: :bball:

I agree. I really think this team will get better as the year progresses. I am really hoping a combination of having a lot of new faces, and a lot of road games to start the season are causing the problems. I'm hoping that a few "easier" home games will allow the players to establish their roles and figure out how to run the offense together.

My faint reasons for some semblance of optimism...

Opponent's eFG% and 2PT% (and thus overall defensive efficiency to a lesser extent) are well above any other oscar team except when he was at Southern Illinois. I think in Big 12 play this will come back down (improve) toward his average. I think this group is having trouble with all the man pressure concepts he and Lowery use and eventually they will get it.

One key feature of oscar's success as a coach has been 3 PT shooting and its reasonable to expect this team to be a solid 3PT shooting team and one of the best oscar has had. We know that Foster can shoot, hopefully Harris earns more minutes because he is a weapon, and Johnson and Thomas look to be improved enough to be threats. Edwards is struggling a lot, but he's 2-5 of his last 3 games, so maybe that's a sign he's figuring things out a bit.

Our rate of TOs (currently 22%) should improve as well. Only 3 other oscar teams have finished over 20% for TOs, I think our guards will get better and with it our offense overall. We are shooting, boarding, and getting to the FT line at solid rates, TOs are really the biggest problem right now.

Dang,  I expect this team to win, especially at home big time.  Break out the super oscar Juice we are headed for 5th in the Big 12, and an seeded 11 in tournament.  If not, then things will get uglier.

how is this team supposed to be "better" as it works its way through the Big 12?  We are the only team with 4 losses in the big12, the next closest is OU @ 6-2...and then everyone else has one loss...except freaking TCU which is undefeated.

I just....yeah, we can shoot it better from 3, we can defend better, we can turn it over less....but we'll be doing it against arguably a tougher schedule.  And it isn't like we've been able to take Brucesketball on the road, we're something like 6-15 in away/neutral games over the last two years (and last year our only conf wins on the road were TCU and Tech). We really haven't played very good basketball for a while now.  Since the beginning of February of last year, we're 10-11.

No thanks to K-State, but the Big 12 has established itself as the #1 conference in RPI and winning % so far in noncon. That makes it at least a 5 bid, and possibly a 6 or 7 bid league.

Well there is one OOC game left.  It's not looking good to meet anyone's expectos is it?

Is this the biggest difference in expecto and results in modern KSU sports history?  I suppose last years baseball team was pretty high up there too. Probably still football 2001.

It was no where near this level, but 2010-2011 basketball should probably be on the list going from #3 preseason to a 5 seed.
Something somewhat near this level is 2004 football going from top 15 preseason to 4-7

Bah. I was WAY over-optimistic. Sheesh.

Not only is this not going to happen, but we are in very real danger of being the worst team in the league. Did not see this coming.
