TITLETOWN - A Decade Long Celebration Of The Greatest Achievement In College Athletics History => Kansas State Football => Topic started by: sonofdaxjones on October 05, 2014, 01:26:19 PM

The old FieldTurf field looking like crap was understandable, because the original FieldTurf (Gen 1) blade design and construction had a tendency to start breaking down fairly badly towards the end of its life cycle.
The GameDay Grass 360 (an AstroTurf product) field looks like crap and it's only been in use for 4 seasons. I don't know if our grounds keeping sucks, or if Bill's insistence on practicing in the stadium all the time is the problem. I've also been told by those in the know that K-State dumps way too much infill into the turf every year because supposedly that's what Snyder wants.
I've seen other GameDay Grass fields that are as old or older than K-State's field and they all look substantially better

fybs
-
It looks fine in person. Maybe get a better TV?
-
It looks fine in person. Maybe get a better TV?
No it doesn't, Dax is right it's looking pretty shitty already
-
It looks fine in person. Maybe get a better TV?
Nope, and sorry, years of experience in talking about subjects like this and reading, "looks fine to me" come out of the mouths and keyboards of many K-State fans pretty much drops the majority of the K-State fanbase down about 27 notches in the "how's this look" critiquing arena.
-
Why should I give a crap?
-
the "how's this look" critiquing arena.
This should be a board name.
-
The reason you should give a crap is to question if the matted down blades of the field offer quality play-ability. Does it impact injuries or increase the chances for injury?
-
Also you don't want anything to look like crap
-
Looks fine. gE.c - full of old, blind, idiots.
-
Looks fine. gE.c - full of old, blind, idiots.
Had hemmy been around, he would have been looking at the old steel stands on the East side while walking through the old gravel parking lots saying stuff like, "this is so big time".
-
Who has a good one of these to compare?
-
Dax is always looking out for player safety, I really respect that about him.
-
Haven't noticed the field looking like crap from my seats, but just watched the Houcat replay and its looks like we're playing football on top of a green calico cat. Could this possibly be the crummy ESPN U cameras or are we dealing with full turf meltdown here?
-
Who has a good one of these to compare?
Start with our baseball field and ku's baseball field, albeit not as much use, and they use a shorter blade on the infield. The dome in St. Louis has it, but now that I think about it, the better looking football fields have the newer generation FieldTurf. Maybe we just bought the wrong stuff. :dunno:
It might just be a product characteristic. We're the only D1 school with AstroTurf GameDay Grass 3D in the stadium, others have it in practice facilities.
-
We are crazy rich, time for a new rug imho.
-
it looks really bad
-
Looks like we need a an old fashioned goEMAW brainstorm to fix this problem.
I say we have turf with all pellets and no "grass".
-
We are crop and soil judging champions for fucks sake we ought to have the best turf on the planet.
-
what crop would make a good turf? Sorghum maybe? Get Garst involved?
-
Probably more to do with the new lights than anything
-
what crop would make a good turf? Sorghum maybe? Get Garst involved?
Big Soybean is involved with the field we have.
It's not the lights FSD.
-
I'm afraid plant lights would be too hot for the safety of our players.
-
What about wheat grass? That might have some legs
-
What about wheat grass? That might have some legs
healthy shakes at halftime :excited:
-
It was a joke. I honestly have no idea what looks like crap about the field or what it's supposed to look like. Seemed like a regular field to me, but i was at the game.
-
I'm thinking its a product thing. It also seems like the new FieldTurf fields are not having the same issues.
Our white has a lot of rubber infill showing so it looks dull.
-
Warm up the mismatched turf debates :Woot:
-
Maybe some Royals synergy would be helpful.
#BringBackTheCrown
-
It's too much pellets, makes it look more worn. The green looks fine, but the midfield powercat is pretty bad
-
I sit eleven rows up so I have no idea how the field looks. I just figured dax was daxing. We should double row some winter wheat to play on next season.
-
It looks worse in person, imho
-
It looks worse in person, imho
Doesn't sound like a big deal then.
-
Snyd's should be using this as leverage for indoor/outdoor practice facility across the street, imho
-
Yeah, it's not a big deal at all. It's like sb melting down about the metal bleachers in the south corners
-
It looked adequate on the 55-inch TV that's for sale in the "Trim's Stuff" thread, Dax. Just saying.
-
I'll give you $100 for the TV if @rdrils delivers it
-
I'll give you $100 for the TV if @rdrils delivers it
Unfortunately, it wouldn't fit in the hotel's airport shuttle.
-
Yeah, it's not a big deal at all. It's like sb melting down about the metal bleachers in the south corners
:don'tcare:
When those things are returned to Baker Field where they belong you will see how our stadium goes from homely nerd girl to stunning prom queen just by taking her glasses off.
-
next time we get turf, they need to ask OKST where they got theirs. It looked fantastic.
-
Dax is always looking out for player safety, I really respect that about him.
-
It looked a little with out but probably not bad enough to start a thread about. :dunno:
-
next time we get turf, they need to ask OKST where they got theirs. It looked fantastic.
Yeah, it looks very very good
-

Very green. Very sharp. Very green and sharp.
-
It does look like crap. But I've thought that since they installed it. :dunno:
-
I'm afraid plant lights would be too hot for the safety of our players.
Grow light purchases would put K-State on some kind of drug lord / master grower watch list.
-
It does look like crap. But I've thought that since they instLled it. :dunno:
thought it looked great when it was installed. started to look super shitty shortly after when the rubber pellets made the white not pop as much and was showing through the green.

I care about all things great and small.
Just watched some high lights of Tech game. The high angle K-State camera (not TV). Turf looks like garbage. Matted down all over the place. Looks like what the old turf looked like after 8 years.
-
mismatched turf debates :Woot:
-
We have very little margin for error now that KU's track is gone. Let's get to work on some new field related talking points immediately.
-
remember when teams used to play on real grass and there would be like dirt and mud showing all over the place? GROSS!
-
Rewatching tech game, field looks bad, confirmed
-
Haven't noticed
-
turf? it's not even real grass, and it looks bad? wtf?
-
Our field looks better than the Washington Professional Football Team's field. So good job guys, they are professional we are just a college. :billdance:
-
Replace black pellets with clear pellets.

lulz..just remembered that the BSFS Expansion thread started as "Will the "cool" pinstripe bowl K-State be on the new field"
How far we have come boys, how far we have come.
-
Replace black pellets with clear pellets.
I like this idea. Maybe even go seasonal, clear in the fall and then switch to white in winter (like snow!). A nice green would be appropriate for the spring game.

 cutting edge stuff!
-
Field looked amazeballs during the POWL's halftime show that I enjoyed on Youtube.
-
May be time to go with purple synthetic, or purple loosestrife?
:dunno:
-
I agree that the lighting makes it more noticeable. No reason why we shouldn't replace the turf every 5-10 years though

That sucks. Those fields are nasty enough without the cancer stuff. Think about the amount of blood and sweat and snot and spit that gets built up over time.

If goalies are ingesting the pellets I'd imagine football players ingest more, they certainly spend much more time on the ground.

nope

Arkansas and Michigan's fields looked like crap tonight.

No but seriously why does our field look like crap

The guys on shaggy were making fun of it :frown:

This is like when you finally realize your favorite car is old and you have to upgrade. Sorry 2000 Jeep Cherokee, you gotta go
-
What is Dax going to do with everyone agreeing with him? Prolly very confused right now
-
You know whose field looked absolutely awful today? Yale. Wow.
i think I saw it when they showed highlights of the Army game, you couldn't even make out the lines and things. Is it a natural surface or artificial dirt?
-
The camera angle made the field look horrible. I saw some other pictures from higher up and a different angle and the field didn't look as bad, but it still looked bad.
I honestly don't think these artificial grass fields were designed to have a college football team practicing on them all the time, and from what I understand K-State practices most of the time in the stadium.
I also noticed goes slipping and sliding around, it's already starting to look like the old FieldTurf and the old garbage FieldTurf field that MethU had.
-
hahaha, classic Dax, everyone agrees the field looked bad so now he says it looked better

I said it still looked bad, I should have phrased it as saying from another angle besides the regular tv angle it didn't look as bad.

Oh, eff me, man! That kid already spent all the money, man!
-
If they aren't gonna use those 3 practice fields they should at least open them up for tailgating and get some use out of them
-
Maybe if they just run the vacuum in the same direction over the turf before the game it would look better. You know, fluff up the nap a little.
-
Maybe if they just run the vacuum in the same direction over the turf before the game it would look better. You know, fluff up the nap a little.
This is what I was thinking. Kinda like a zamboni except for GameDay 360 Fieldturf.
-
Can confirm that the turf looked like garbage on the ESPN broadcast of the UT game - and the glare off the turf seemed to be rough ridin' up the camera exposure. Everything else looked really dark. It was almost unwatchable to start with. The game also sucked - can't believe how far Texas has fallen that I just don't care much about shutting them out - our offense was lethargic.
Anyway, not sure why the turf puts off so much glare - I've never seen that in person.
-
Wait, that wasn't fresh snow on the field Saturday?
-

They drag the turf on gamedays similar to what they do to the dirt on baseball infields :whistle1:

I think it's about time to just go with natural grass.

What are they dragging the turf with. Because the last time I saw pictures of the K-State grounds crew "dragging the turf" it was literally a guy on a John Deere Gator pulling a chain with two empty freight pallets attached to the end. This was just a few years ago and I thought at the time we'd quit being so small timey a long time ago, but I was wrong.

All they need to do is run one of these bad boys over it. Would make it look a lot better.

-
The reason it's glarey is because it's matted down.
And the reason it is matted is down, is because it is practiced on 24/7 instead of just being used for games.
-
Gonna have to confirm here guys, word around the office is indeed that KSU football is practicing on the field too much.
-
How much is it to replace? Like only $1m or so? Is it even that much? If it is we could probably replace it every year without a problem with our money. Maybe the dozers will eff it up when they install the limestone wall and we have to replace it.
-
I mean, I know we're :kstategrad: and all, but why do we have 3 football practice fields and yet we practice in the stadium all the time? Seems like a waste to me.
Edit: make that 4 practice fields.
-
I will give the turf it's due when it comes up big for us, the safety had the opportunity to kill TLBL if he doesn't slip.

it's so bad. I love it.

Looks like AstroTurf. But at least better under the lights than the noonday sun during the Texas game.

Take note: bitching about the turf in 2011 means you earn a tongue-lashing from grandpa dax. Bitching about the turf in 2014 means you ARE grandpa dax.
-
My wife commented on it while we were sitting in the stands last night and she gives zero effs about field appearance.
-
Guess it would make sense to have a practice field (with the same field turf) connected to Vanier.
In fact, aside from the indoor facility, do we even have a practice field with artificial turf? I think we don't. Are those natural grass practice fields ever used?
-
i feel like this thread has run its course.

Bill can do whatever the hell he wants on that field. And I mean anything.

looks absolutely nothing like ours

Yeah, most of the time I see an NFL game on artificial turf I think the field looks like ours. If it's good enough for them, it's good enough for me.

I don't get it, is that from twilight or something?
-
dagobah
-
It is literally the worst field I have ever seen. There must be about fifty random pieces of turf just shoved in throughout the entirety of the field.
-
How does a field look like that?
-
If you are watching this St. Petersburg Bowl and are comparing this turf to anything you've ever seen before then you are lying to yourself. This is wooftown like I've never seen before.
-
Guys, it's the exact same turf as ours. The only difference is that they have patches where the mound and the baselines are. Most stadiums don't have full dirt infields like the Trop does so their patches have to be bigger than normal. Don't know if anyone noticed or not but they have a MLB/Rays/FieldTurf logo on their third base line for baseball, they didn't cover that up so it was awkwardly sitting on the paint in NCSU's endzone.

agreed. let it grow longer the Baylor/TCU/Auburn type game weeks.
you'd think snyd's has already tried to push for this.

It is. Plus turf is really nice, consistent, and it doesn't matter if it's wet. I'd much rather have turf and IMO grass at K-State by November would look terrible.
-
I'd like to have the good kind of turf though. Seems like a simple thing to ask for but nope, we got sold on the garbagey one. Again.
-
I've heard it's really difficult to grow good football grass in our part of the country because the climate is so extreme (hot and cold)
There are plenty of grass fields in the Midwest, even ISU has one. There are grass fields in the desert. Hell, University of Phoenix Stadium has a grass field for a indoor venue that they have on a tray that they store in the parking lot.

Iowa has more tame summers and can use cool-weather grass (that still looks like crap) while places like Arizona (and the southeast) can use warm weather grass. This is what I've been told. I'm sure you remember that Mizzou went from astroturf to grass and then back to the field turf, I'm guessing for the same reason we have turf.
-
That field at the St. Pete Bowl last night looked 200x worse than our field has ever looked, and it wasn't just because of the patchwork turf to cover up baseball fields. It was because of super bizarre turf pellet distribution, imo. Either way, we've clowned on that horrible field before and last night it looked waaay worse than it ever has. (That's not to say Wagner Field doesn't look shitty, though. It does.)
ISU's grass looks good. Somehow. Arrowhead's grass is terrible.

Hmmm, didn't even realize Mizzou was back on turf. I don't remember their grass looking burned or browned, but I do remember it looking generally shaggy and unkempt.

We could do natural grass, but it would never stand up to the amount of usage due to Snyder insisting on it being our primary practice surface.

Ya. I thought that they were supposed to be doing turf studies or what have you over on Colbert. At least that was thrown around when they were introducing Colbert Hills. Where are the fruits of that research?

I've never been on a high quality grass football field but I doubt they are anything like fairways or greens. They wouldn't last very long.

yeah. i mean, we'd be here until tomorrow if i tried to list every big time program with turf and every dipshit dumbass program without it. like it would take forever.
oregon has turf. purdue has natural grass. i just don't have the time. thanks for helping out, pete.
-
Look, if there were thousands of George Tomas and we had our very own to take care of grass and make it look great, I'd be all for it. But there aren't and with so many variables to control too often grass looks and plays terrible. #teamturf

It's a shame all of these once-proud institutions have succumbed to the temptation of a few dollars saved and a few less worries over grounds keeping.

yep. texas, oregon, michigan, ohio state, and notre dame are worried about money. good call. :Woot:

god i hope our fball team never switches to real grass. barf.
typical small-timey loser mindset.
rd prob prefers synthetic bball courts too.
both ohio state and michigan have field turf, dipshit. meanwhile iowa state has grass, so you tell me.
Usc and Alabama have grass, tho :runaway:

We should fill the rough ridin' thing up with water and logs and have a log rolling field #lumberjackchallenge

great post. almost makes it look like some big time schools have turf and others don't. mind boggling.

Add a synthetic "the hill" to compete with ku for "setting", maybe even a sniper tower too. Since synthetic is better, we win by default :gocho:

Sure seems that way. Although it seems like the ones in grass climates grow grass, and the ones in freeze you Dick off climate do turf

Tom I'm guessing you don't make it to the soccer threads much. Football players don't ingest pellets, facemasks mouthpieces and such. Turf is total bullshit for soccer but it is fine for football as football players don't spend inordinate amounts of time sliding on hot turf, nor are they running miles and miles per day on it.
-
Thanks for the update. Basically the football uniform acts as hazmat suit and they limit their exposure to three hours a day.
-
Yet at K-State, and other schools nearly every single football practice is held for hours on artificial grass.
The air temp above artificial grass is typically just a couple of degrees warmer than natural grass at 2 to 4 feet above the surface.

Yeah, K-State hardly ever uses their grass practice fields. They need to be turned to something else.
-
Good likelihood they are going to be turned into the soccer practice fields.
-
Noticed on TGIP's workout video for the Packers that the FieldTurf (Not AstroTurf Gameday Grass) in the indoor facility, which is about 10 years old now, looks a lot better aesthetically than the AstroTurf Gameday Grass in the football stadium.

Makes sense. Is old stadium for sure going to be where the games are at?

Doesn't sound like it.

Can Confirm they are turning them into artificial turf fields for Women's Soccer.

They should probably have those at Old Stadium, right?
-
Nebraska's field looks terrible. And I don't flow what they are playing on in the penn st / temple game, but that looks like hell, too.
-
If kslim and nicname are for real grass then you know it's the wrong choice

Nebraska still plays on field turf, last time i heard. The Linc is natural grass.

Looks like it was grazed by robot sheep.

Someone needs to find and post a pic of UNLV's field, OMG!

I just completely blanked on what the original "warm up the ____, motherfuckers" was directed at UNLV.

Looks like a giant craps table. Halftime entertainment could be people rolling giant foam dice for prizes.
-
Michigan's field turf now looks like crap.

:barf:

:barf:
My mother in law, who knows very little about football, just commented about how the field looks like crap. Between the hashes is unbelievable bad.

Ask and thou shalt receive (need after pix to confirm that it doesn't look like hell anymore)

I'm pretty confident what they are doing will only improve the possibility of cancer for our players, not the actual look of the field.

So no more practice in the stadium?
-
The 2 colors of green still pisses me off...looks Fake Sugar Dick (WARNING, NOT THE REAL SUGAR DICK!). :Yuck:
-
so what are they actually doing to it now?
-
Hope they remember to put the plastic furniture covers down before the concert.
-
so what are they actually doing to it now?
filling it back up with cancer pellets

Seriously, how hard is it to match turf color?
-
Pretty hard. Two completely different types of turf.
-
picture this in your mind's eye- artificial turf that grows like real turf but isn't real- it's fake
:nerd:
-
Like a giant playdoh barbershop?
-
We would be able to keep the grass long during regular plays where we are way slower than the competition, but then pull it back short for kickoff returns where we have a burner fielding the kick.
-
While we're at it we might as well install a variable crown.
