if Chelsea hadn't sucked it at home against Inter then Didier could be a part of this CHAMPIONS LEAGUE thread

if you want to start a thread about the premier league and how weak it is and how easy Drogba dominates in that league then be my guest

the semis in this cup tourney have come down to the top clubs (historically) in each of the top 4 leagues on the continent.

France-Lyon
Germany-Bayern Mun.
Italy-Inter Milan
Spain-Barca

today features an Inter Milan-Barcelona matchup on Fox Sports (HD!!!).

the agile-Argentenian, Lionel Messi,  will be trying to break down Inter's back line of defense which includes 3 Brazilian's.  Inter will do their best to keep their structure against a quick passing Barca squad and rely on countering with their speedy striker, the Cameroonian Comet, Samuel Eto'o.

2 of the best managers of the game will be clashing including one who's good smellingness would make Jay Wright blush:  the special one, Jose Mourniho, manager of Inter.

Of course Barca will bounce back, how could they not with all that talent?

I'm glad to see there are soccer threads going on in here, I guess I've missed them before.  I'm a big fan but sometimes it's hard to stay interested since none of my friends are into it at all until it gets to International tournaments.

Anybody else play FIFA on 360?

Inter 3 - Barca 1 going back to Barca next Wednesday.  still entirely up in the air as i can easily see Barcelona scoring 2 at home.  the away goal Barca got might be the difference.  but the special one will have something to say about this before it's all over.  his tactics took Barcelona completely out of their game.  Messi was invisible and Xavi was ineffective.  hopefully Pep has an answer to get those guys involved.

thought he did alright compared w/ the rest of his team.  i just think Mourniho's tactics took Barcelona completely out of what they wanted to do.  Barcelona's movement off the ball was also missing which is usually their strength.  could have been due to the 14 hour bus ride they had to endure.  but w/o that off-the-ball-movement those great passing moves you normally see out of Barca can't be completed.

how would you like to be selecting a lineup for Brazil and have Alves as your #2 right back behind Maicon.  we've got Jonathon Spector and Steve Cherundolo competing for that spot  :blindfold:  Maicon's volley against Juve last weekend was ridiculous http://videos.apnicommunity.com/Video,Item,1135329920.html

yeseterday's Bayern Munich / Olympique Lyonais match in Munich was a good one filled w/ controversy.  Munich has opened up the last 2 cup ties going down early against Fiorentina and Manchester United.  this time around they take a 1-0 lead to their away fixture conceding nothing at home giving them a great chance to advance.

Bayern's own Frenchman, Ribery, was shown a strait red in the first half putting them down to 10 men.  Lyon couldn't capitalize but had their chances.  Lyon then went down to 10 men when Toulalan was shown a 2nd yellow.  then it was Robben-time.  the flying Dutchmen continued his Champions League heroics with yet another golazo giving Bayern the 1-0 lead going back to France for the 2nd leg.

Robben goals in the knockout stages of the Champions Leage:
round of 16 2nd leg @ Fiorentina giving them the deciding aggregate lead: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WYQ9owmZj6o

quarter final 2nd leg @ Manchester United giving them the deciding aggregate lead: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bx16iOUQn8A

semi final 1st leg @ home vs Lyon giving them the lead as it stands, 1-0:

Bayern Munich went thru w/ a resounding 3-0 win @Lyon yesterday.  the Croatian Sensation,  Ivica Olic, netted a hat trick giving Munich a 4-0 aggregate win.  Robben's usual heroics were not needed as Bayern dominated from the get go.

down by 2 goals in the aggregate score line, Lyon's chances went kaput in the 2nd half went they lost a man to a questionable red card by the Italian ref.  Cris was cautioned for an aggressive slide tackle that looked clean.  then he was sent off getting a 2nd yellow for dissent when he mockingly applauded the Italian ref for showing him for the first yellow.

Bayern's Ribery will miss the final against the Inter/Barca winner after receiving a 3 game suspension for his red card offense in the first leg of this tie.

looking back Inter only had 3 points after 4 matches.  then they won 2-1 @Dynamo Kiev and won at home against Ruben Kazan to get through finishing 2nd in their group to Barca with 9 points ahead of Kiev's 6.  i can see why you got the 14:1 if it was in November.

I fantasize about Jose Mourinho coaching K-State's football team.  Would be hilarious.  He would be constantly complaining about how it smelled here, how there was no good wine, how the women were ugly and lobbying for a new job.  Meanwhile, he would destroy all other teams.  He is the best.

Do I pick the team who's best player is suspended for the final and is under heat for banging underage prostitutes or the team under heat for match-fixing and could very well wind up relegated to Italy's second division. :dunno: All I know is I love European Soccer!!

i think Bayern cruising to the final proves Ribery is not Bayern's best player.  Altintop was awesome against Lyon and made me completely forget about Ribery.  plus Ribery may be the ugliest player in world football.  uglier than Tevez.

Robben, Olic, Lahm are all in top form.  Robben's heroics basically singlehandedly got Bayern to the semifinals.

meh.  Fulham has been in the top flight of the top league in Europe/Britiain for at least the last 10 years.

and the Europa Cup is not really that big of a deal.

i would compare it to a team from the middle of the pack of the Big East winning the NIT.  not a big deal at all.  Fulham's main purpose over the years has been to remain in the top division in England ... a huge payoff.  now that they actually put some effort into winning a trophy and are actually doing it is impressive but not really the big deal everyone is making it out to be.

Title: copa italia / 4th spot up for grabs in England
Post by: mcmwcat on May 04, 2010, 10:04:30 AM
WEDNESDAY:

2pm on ESPN2 4th place and the final Champions League spot for next year will go to the winner of the Tottenham and Manchester City match.  First time in years that this 4th spot in England won’t belong to one of the big 4: Chelsea, ManU, Arsenal or Liverpool.  L’pule has had a bad year for them and are looking at a 7th place finish.

1:45 On FSC the Copa Italia final between Champions League finalist Inter Milan and AS Roma will be played.  Inter and Roma are the #1 and #2 in Serie A table this year with 2 games remaining in league play.  If Inter wins this one it will give them a chance at winning the treble (winning the Copa Italia, Serie A, and Champions League).  On both sides you will see footballers who will be big players in this summer’s World Cup.

Inter:
Julio Cesar GK: Brazil
Maicon RB: Brazil
Lucio CB: Brazil

http://soccernet.espn.go.com/report?id=291007&league=SCO.1&cc=5901

Summary:

Team is down 6-2 with 25 minutes left.
Fight back to 5-6.
Get penalty in 87th, miss it.
Score anyways in injury time to tie 6-6.

Yeah up until the late 70s no one really had set numbers, the numbers were 1-11 and depended on where you played on the field. #10 was always up in the attacking line and was probably your best player. #9 was always a famous number too. Now the best players request the numbers in their contracts.

weekend wrap:

after winning 4 major trophies trophies last year (along with 2 minor ones) Barcelona's last chance at a title came down to the final week of La Liga.  Barca and Messi trounced the visitors 4-0 to get the title making Real Madrid's result meaningless in the title race.  Madrid ended up drawing anyway so a draw would have been good enough for Barca to retain their league title.  the draw between Madrid and Malaga kept Malaga up in the top division as they avoided relegation.

Bayern Munich won the German Cup to go along with their league title.  they will be going for the treble this weekend.

Inter Milan's 1-0 win clinched the title for them as Roma finished just a point behind.  they also claimed a double with a chance at the treble this weekend going for the European Championship against Bayern.

FA Cup final was closer than expected with Chelsea banging 6 shots off the combinations of posts and crossbars before Drogba's free kick goal gave them the deciding goal in a 1-0 victory over Portsmouth.  Chelsea's cup win means they get their 2nd trophy of the season to go along with their league title.

it’s last weekend of club competition of the season and the last football to be watched until the FIFA World Cup (TM) begins on June 11.

of course the match of the week and of the year is the Champions Leage final Saturday afternoon.  Inter vs Bayern.  Jose vs Louis.  the Italians vs the Germans.  Hopefully the game doesn’t turn into a tactical slowdown because Bayern’s attacking from the wings can be really fun to watch; especially Robben’s cutting in from the right and Lahm’s overlapping behind Robben.  we'll see a ton of internationals being called up to the FIFAWC in this game from Germany, Brazil, Netherlands, and Argentina.

in England the playoff to get into the premiere league features a battle of small-timers in Blackpool vs Cardiff City .  it would be cool to see a club like Blackpool get into the top division but I think they may set a record next year for lowest point total ever.  places 3-6 playoff for the 3rd promotion spot to get into the EPL and Blackpool finished 6th while Cardiff City finished 4th.  either team will get pummeled next year. just the chance to get pummeled in the EPL is a privilege which will be decided Saturday morning in Wembley stadium.  the fans, getting a chance to watch their team play against the best in the sport for 38 games, won't care about getting that pummeling.

Atletico Madrids Sergio Aguero seems likely to be Reals next signing. He is on a few teams wish lists and could be a star in the making. Plus he's Maradona's son in law. Neymar fm Santos(BRZ) is another name to remember. He has game changing speed and a ton of potential. Dude scored like five goals in a game last season. He's  getting attention from a few big clubs in England and Italy. Pele loves this kid. Robinho also plays for Santos right now, but he could be moving on after the WC...Real should move on Torres, though.  Liverpool is starting to look pretty ugly right now.

Inter pretty much dominated.   Bayern had a few chances on goal and should have tied it up 30 seconds into the second half which would have made it interesting.  wouldn't have mattered as Inter showed their superior class throughout.

i'm not sure what Maradona is thinking leaving Cambiasso and Zanetta out of the World Cup squad.  those 2, playing in front of the back 4, shut down almost everything  Bayern threw at them.

on the other end, Milito toyed w/ the 2 Bayern center backs for most of the game making the club look dumb for letting Lucio get away from them.  with the salary cap in the German league they probably didn't have the money to keep him anyway.

congrats to Mr. KK for getting great odds on Inter to win it all  :katpak:

took the money I won on Inter and am now going a little crazy with World Cup bets.

Any thoughts on leading scorer?  Pretty good odds on Tevez, Adriano, Roque Santa Cruz and Forlan.  Think Tevez is a pretty good bet, maybe Eto'o.  I think Santa Cruz/Forlan could easily score 2-3 in the group, but I'm unsure they will advance and that makes it tough, but the odds for the Spainards are terrible, the Italians are too hard to guess, the Germans are a sucker bet, don't like Ronaldo, don't like the French.  Thinking maybe a Dutchman or Fabiano is the true favorite.

Rooney?  Would love to hear some thoughts.

from Brazil I'd go with Fabiano.  guy is a goal scoring machine for the national team with 14 goals in 14 games: http://soccernet.espn.go.com/players/stats?id=43021&cc=5901.  you know Brazil is almost guaranteed to get to the semifinals so they'll have a lot of games for him to get a lot of goals.  opens up against N. Korea so they'll be some opportunities there.

I'd definitely go with Rooney. He's England's main man, they always try and get him the ball. He's got a fairly easy group (minus the USA who will win 4-0), and if they win the group they've won't have to face Brazil, Spain or Italy until at least the semis.

Real Madrid finally gets rid of a manager it never wanted (http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2010/writers/sid_lowe/05/27/barcelona.realmadrid/index.html)

Quote
Yet Pellegrini's relationship with Pérez never broke down. It never existed in the first place. The Madrid president wanted Arsene Wenger to be his coach. Only when that option was revealed to be impossible did he begrudgingly allow Valdano to go after Pellegrini. He was never convinced. Never mind this week, last week or the week before, never mind Barcelona, Lyon or Alcorcón, Pellegrini was sacked the day he started.

It would be difficult to prise Lampard from Chelsea just two years after the England midfielder snubbed Mourinho's Inter Milan and signed a five-year contract at Stamford Bridge. It is expected to be the 31-year-old's last big deal.

Gerrard, however, has question marks over his future at Liverpool and represents a player who twice got away from Mourinho when the Portuguese was in charge of Chelsea.

Barcelona offer £29m for Cesc Fabregas (http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/sport/football/premier_league/arsenal/article7142415.ece)

The bid is likely to be rejected as Arsenal have a much higher valuation of their captain who is under contract for four more years.

The move, however, is a clear statement of Barcelona’s intent and sources at the club are “optimistic” of re-signing their former youth player.

Benitez out at Liverpool

In what amounts to a vote of no confidence in the man who guided them to Champions League victory in 2005 on that unforgettable night in Istanbul, the Liverpool board approved a proposal to the Spaniard that would allow him to leave Anfield with a payoff worth about £3 million up front.

According to the terms of the five-year contract he signed in March 2009, Benítez is entitled to a £16 million severance package. However, given their financial predicament, Liverpool cannot come up with that kind of money, regardless of their desire to bring about a change of manager.

hopefully this get costlier and uglier for the red scousers.
