Title: Let's talk Auburn...
Post by: cas4ksu on May 31, 2014, 09:40:56 PM
Similarly titled to my OU thread. I don't think there is much question that the Auburn game is the most anticipated home game in quite awhile, but what do we make of them?

It's been talked about plenty of how fortunate they were last season (tipped ball against UGA, Davis against Bama) and they replace arguably the best player in the nation on their offensive line and a stud back with Mason. However, by returning Marshall their offense shouldn't suffer much.

Their defense was suspect all season and their biggest question has to be their secondary. Last year it was 102nd in the nation in passing yards per game. Obviously this bodes well for Lockett.

Come game time, Auburn will presumably be ranked in the top 5 and probably a double digit favorite at kick. However, I feel like that will be mostly due to the public. No team has been bet more in Vegas to get to the playoff and win than Auburn. Also, Nick Marshall has had twice as much money been wagered on him than any other player for the Heisman thus far.

Is Auburn a product of public hype? Luck? Combination of the two? They could have just as easily been an 8-4 team as an 11-1 team.

I don't know, but I definitely think we have a solid chance of upsetting them.

Nick Marshall is extremely good

He's a decent QB, but nothing we haven't seen before.   2000 yds in the air and 14 TDs doesn't exactly terrify me.   We face stud QBs all the time, he'll just be another one.

Geno was said to be "extremely good" or  better until we rolled into Morgantown two years ago.  :gocho:

It depends on the branch of big chemical. There is more than ag! I have not given up on this, but will have to wait until the game is 4-6 weeks out.

As of right now I'd say Auburn wins by 17-21 points.

Let's say 34-17 Tigers.

I watched the Spring Game in horror at how few athletes we have on the field, and any JC guys won't be up to speed by this game.

This is beginning to look and sound like the days of when we were contemplating calf size, hips, track and field times and various other non-football things.   Recruiting simply hasn't been good enough to beat a good SEC team, I suspect something like an 8-5 or 7-6 season is in order for 2014.

All the bloggers on the War Eagle boards are more interested in how they're going to keep Bama from pounding sand up their assholes in the Iron Bowl revenge match.  They're completely overlooking their entire non-con, dismissing us as if we're a member of C*USA, and paying no heed to the fact they haven't won a non-con road game against a BCS caliber opponent in almost a decade.

We played Kentucky at home in 1982. We actually won, so go us.

Meanwhile, Auburn fans don't consider us a threat. I'm sure the posters/bloggers on War Eagle are very representative of their fans at-large. Living in the State of Alabama, fortunately for not much longer, confirms that daily. But, the team is quite vulnerable. I like our odds.

They are a 13 point favorite in Manhattan yet only a 14 point favorite at home against a Manziel-less A&M team? Doesn't make much sense to me.

Typically when a point spread is around 10-14 points, the underdog is usually around a +325 to +375.

Go to your favorite real estate website and look for a farm that you'd like to own, then take note of the price for said farm.  Bet that amount.

 King's voice is great

Yeah I love his show. And he does have just a great voice.

If the line stays in the 10 to 13 point range how much should I bet on The Grey Wizard to beat the spread? Please give monetary values only; I do not own a farm.

Go to your favorite real estate website and look for a farm that you'd like to own, then take note of the price for said farm.  Bet that amount.

Used to have a lot of respect for Gus. He had good, Christian, morals and now he's fallen victim to the ugly "win at all costs" mentality of the $EC.

It quite frankly disgusts me.

If you guys have flaws on defense, we're going to eat you up.  Watching our offense, especially when Marshall is out there, is scary.  They're good and our WRs look as good as I've ever seen them.  Our offense is way ahead of where it was last season and polishing up the "fits" for the system is only going to make it scarier.

With all of that said, you should be able to run for 600 yards against us.  Our D SUCKS once again.  That plus the fact that it's a Thursday night, gives me worry.

He's not even close to being right. Auburn has a shitty defense without a lockdown corner that can guard Lockett or a legit pass rush.  They can't cover kicks very well and they run an offense that Snyder knows in and out.  They aren't even close to being the worst matchup for us.

Admittedly I've only seen our highlights, while I watched significant portions of the Auburn game last night and we're just not there athletically from my observation.   Maybe Snyder can cobble together a game plan.   We'll see, but overall I'll still ask WTF our staff has been doing on the recruiting trail since Snyder came back? There's really no reason why we shouldn't be light years more athletic today, than we were 4 years ago, and I see at best, a marginal difference.

Our best athletes are on the bench so the guys with great intangibles can play.  Derricott, Clinkscales, Prewett are on the bench because they either arrived late or have some unathletic kid who has all the intrinsic values is ahead of them.

If Dvonta and Clinks don't play next week I doubt Snyder will throw them in against Auburn with no experience. Schellenberg has no business being in a football uniform and I honestly can't believe that he is our best option. If prewett doesn't play at least half the game against ISU I'm going to be highly concerned.

Arkansas was hanging pretty tough there for a while.  Then we started hitting them hard and the lightning struck.  During the weather delay, Auburn did something while Arkansas pumped the jams and CRUSHED a bunch of PBJs in their locker room.  After that, Auburn crushed the fightin' Beilieamaiamas.

How will KSU adapt?  What type of sandwich will ya'll (The South!) bring to the game?

Snyder fed the cats 6 pats of butter per just to slow them down against the Paul Bunyons. Also, he probably held back 2 DITRs just to surprise the Tigers. When that play book gets opened up completely, the cats will win by 4.

True story!  He maps his offensive plays with colored (not racist) sharpies, it's something we're not proud of.  His wife is also bats hit (autocorrected) crazy!

Also, while Malzahn was coaching high school not too long ago, it's well known that HCBS is a long time middle school substitute.  He's not the cool sub either, he's a hardass, demanding perfection when diagramming sentences*.

This is a distinct possibility.  I am quite pessimistic about this. We will be lucky to make it a three quarter game.

When we kept running the Wildcat without doing anything besides running straight forward without success, I legitimately thought it may be setting it up for next week. I'm still not convinced that that's not what it was for.

I have been waiting for this game since last year. I watch an auburn game when it don't conflict with my wildcats. Marshall is very deceptive he had bamas linebackers on their heals all night in the sec championship all night that kid is no joke. Can the cats win absolutely auburn has not been tested yet this year. Could they blow us out? Its likely but if there is one thing the cats have on their side its being the underdog and they have for the most part played to that. These cats by no means are a top 4 team nor will they ever be with Snyder at the helm. That's just a simple fact and I'm OK with that is a quality that makes me love my cats that much more because in Kansas we can do a lot with nothing. It reminds me when kstate put a beat down on USC and he said after the game anyone can win at any given time and this game was just our time. So when it comes to auburn I think this game is at that level in terms of stature for the program.also if we beat auburn we will be the only big 12 team who beat a sec team this year.

If Auburn doesn't win by at least 3 TD's than their entire staff needs to be fired before they even get on the plane to go back home.

I agree with this.  In each and every position on the field, auburn has a more talented player.  maybe, maybe it's a push at one WR position with Lockett.  This reminds me of '96 and '10 when we played Nebraska at home early in the season. Everyone was thinking we had a shot and then they just came in and rolled us.

I am a big Auburn fan and have seen almost no Kansas State football this season, so take what I have to say with a grain of salt.

You guys are overreacting to your close game against Iowa State. The Auburn game has been circled since last season on Kansas State's schedule. It will be a night game in your own building against a top 5 team. A morning game in Ames is easy to look past when you have such a big game coming up. This will be the first road game Auburn has played since Tennessee in early November last season.

That being said, the problems your team has are probably real because even looking past Iowa State, you shouldn't be giving up 28 points in a half to them. However, Auburn has problems of their own. Our secondary can give up big plays and we are not the best tackling team. Our defensive line is good and if they get penetration/pressure it will almost certainly be a long night for you... but if your O-Line can hold up, you will be able to move the ball both on the ground and through the air.

Auburn's offense is no joke though. Nick Marshall's passing ability is questionable at best, but nobody has really been able to stop the read option. Corey Grant is one of the fastest players in college football, and Cameron Artis-Payne has been very effective running between the tackles. I think he is averaging about 7 yards per carry this season right now. Even Florida State with all of their NFL talent on defense gave up a ton of yards on the ground to us.

If I were handicapping the game, I'd make Auburn a 14-17 point favorite in a high scoring game (over/under in the mid-high 60s). I look forward to seeing the game in person next Thursday.

They had nearly 600 yards of total offense against Arkansas.   Artis-Payne had 181 yards.

Auburn's back-up QB was 12 for 16, 246 yards and 2 TD's vs Arkansas.

i'm a delusional idiot for handicapping as a 14-17 point favorite? it opened at 13 before the season began. that was when we didn't know how our offense would look after replacing a heisman finalist and maybe the best offensive ineman in the country. not to mention before you guys almost dropped a game to iowa state.

incidentally, auburn has covered the spread in 11 straight games.

i thought i was giving you the straight dope. if you think a 14 point spread is delusional, then bet the farm on kansas state because you will have the opportunity to do so.

A) it was quickly bet down to 8

B) Massey currently has it projected at 6 & Sagarin at 2. While not always accurate on game outcomes, are very solid in projecting lines as their algo's are VERY similar to those used to set lines.

C) Vegas books aren't fooled by the media.

Books might bait all the SEC-SEC-SEC lemmings at 7.5, but I doubt it's much over that if at all. Most outside the  SEC-SEC-SEC realize what a fluke the barners were last year & how evenly matched these teams really are.  The best team in your overhyped league got absolutely skull-mumped by OU in the Sugar, NU (a mediocre big 10 team) handled Georgia pretty easily and y'all needed MIRACLES at home to beat both. Talk to me about giving up 21 to piggy AT HOME . They're worse than Iowa State.

if by "best team in the SEC" you mean "did not reach the SEC title game" and "skullf****" you mean" "outgained by about 100 yards and had a 7 point lead in the final minute before closing the game with a scoop and score" then... okay.

what is the Big 12's record in the cotton bowl over the last 10 years? Serious question, I don't know the answer... it just seems like every year the SEC wins it.

Hi. I know very little about Kansas St. or about the game with my alma mater (Auburn) except that it is the second half a home and home from 2007 and that Everydayshouldbesaturday.com used to relentlessly run down Ron Prince. And what the hell, a trip to Manhattan, KS is more interesting than playing Clemson for the 723rd time so, screw it, let's have some fun.

I don't really want to but if I have to, I'll Google some totally irrelevant stats about median temperature and humidity affecting the game or some such nonsense. I know we haven't won a non-conference road game since Thomas Jefferson was coaching VMI but I'm not sure stuff like that has any bearing on the outcome next Thursday.

But it's your house so if that stuff is expected, just let me know. I'm flexible.

That sounds familiar. We have family season tickets at Auburn that we have had since the 60's and are on the 50 yard line about 30 rows up. I hate sitting in those because everyone around those seats are about 90 years old. I much prefer our seats in the endzone......

I hear ya, brotha... Our stadium, partly because it's so small, just seems really dead and is not intimidating at all.

I've always maintained that if they'd move the students down from the upper deck, get the band out of the endzone and find away to teach people to cheer loudly when we are on DEFENSE rather than offense, we'd have a better chance to pull off some upsets.

As it is, the false start penalties we cause our own team are just drive killers.  Hopefully, the visiting Auburn fans can give us some pointers on what we can do better to attain a more SEC-SEC-SEC level of enthusiasm...  Striped ties and button downs would be a great place to start, amirite?

Auburn hasn't seen a crowd as hostile as the one they'll see in Manhattan.  They'll roll over

The only thing that sucks is how far away the students are from the visitors bench.  I still can't understand why we put all the big money donors there since they just sit on their hands and never make any noise.

It must be sad that the fanciest event they have to look forward to all year involves a white tablecloth over a candelabra bedecked folding table in a parking lot.

Teams like Auburn, Oregon, and Baylor are hard for the Cats because they are better both athletically and schematically. You can overcome one but you can't overcome both.

Yes, if you pull away late its because your backup left guard is very good. Depth is key in these games. I mean, what if our backup longsnapper isn't as good as yours?

You will see "backups" on defense all night long. We generally play about 10 guys on DL alone every game and often wear down OL's because of it. Our talent is deep there.

I really like this quote.... and wish I had come to this thread first...
My opinion of your board (members) have increased because of this thread....

For myself, I think there are so many upper classmen on our team, I don't think they will be much affected by the atmosphere in your stadium, although it may be very load... Playing in Manhattan just won't be as bad as playing in Jordan Hare West (Our name for the bama stadium since we OWN it)...

for a good long while it was extremely accurate.  up until just a few years ago, through circumstance, we'd always brag that bama had never beaten AU at bama's home.  they did get 2 revenge thrashings very recently though that fixed that.

Why the hell would you do that?  It's currently at -9 most places and Wynn LV is at 8.5... Either bet it online or have a proxy in Vegas play the -8.5 for you.  Then, screenshot the online play as proof or post the ticket.

Put your money where your mouth is, or STFU.

Historically, he also hasn't been very good at football in the state of Kansas...

In 2012, he went 7-4 as the starter at GCCC with 18 TD and 20 interceptions. TWENTY.  :sdeek:

Yeah, if we can get up early and control the clock, Auburn may abandon the run game and things could get really ugly. I think they will have some degree of success running the ball against us, though. It's probably going to be a close game.

Interior D-Line is the one and only strength.  If the corners could stay with a receiver for longer than .008 seconds, we could have a great defense.

I think this is exactly what we thought about OSU vs FSU, and OU vs Bama last year.  The difference is that OSU did not begin to believe they could win until the end of the game.

K-State needs to simply play as close to error free ball on defense and don't give up the long play.  If a running game can be established capitalized by points, well whether it's Nick Marshall or anyone else, they can't do anything sitting on the sidelines.

Because a backup who is 90% as good as a starter is more effective when the starter is winded and the backup is fresh? Obviously? Same reason teams tend to use multiple running backs and not just their top guy.
