I have a female friend/former coworker who has fallen in with a new guy and his crowd of degenerate losers. They are into all kinds of drugs and she is smoking and snorting all kinds of crap. She's into synthetic marijuana now too because she's trying to get a job and pass a drug test... Oh yeah, she quit her job a few weeks after meeting this guy because she was all doped up and couldn't make it to work anymore. He hasn't lost his job because he doesn't have one. He sells drugs for a living. He's a real scumbag...
Anyway... we've been keeping in touch with her and trying to intervene a bit and stayed in communication but it's getting to the point (synthetic marijuana is bad) that we think we need to really get involved for her safety...
In your experiences... is it even worth trying or should we let her hit bottom, hope she doesn't die, and then help her rebuild?
Or do we just assume she's mumped and wait for the funeral?

I think even if you helped and got her straight she'd just end up doing it again. Self-destructive behaviors seem to be chronic, in my experience.

You should get really involved in her life and if it starts to seem like it's not working just try that much harder until it does. Just keep pushing. Do not hesitate to get as controlling and aggressive as the situation requires.

This seems like the best course of action. We haven't even given her any crap about it yet. Just kind of :popcorn: from the sidelines. Also... she just had to go pick her mom up out of rehab... so it runs in the family. She's probably definetly mumped.

Offer any help that she will take. She's going to have to want to quit though. Usually that involves rock bottom. That's how I quit, and I'm not sure anything else would have worked.

If you're not really close to her, she probably won't care. If you are, it never hurts to get involved. It might not help, and she might choose drugs over you, but at least you tried.

hugs are better than drugs. if you give this girl a really good hug, she will never look for another doobie in her life. make the hug count though, you really have to go after it. don't be scared, no one has ever died from a hug overdose.
last bit of advice- make sure she can feel that the hug is removing the toxins in her body and soul and replacing them with vital love nutrients.

For sure, but anytime you're making something in a lab and there's no real legal accountability for the quality, there is a higher chance that something goes wrong. I don't think synthetic weed is inherently deadly, but mistakes can be made in the production process.

You don't learn self control from someone else. The type of behavior modification that we are discussing has to begin with one's self.

It looks as though the Blumpz Signal is in the night sky. This is a real complex problem. One that involves many drugs, a failed support system in her immediate life (drug dealer boyfirend) and what appears to be a series of clearly overwhelming emotions that are manifesting in damaging thoughts and behaviors. Is she addicted? The addicts i deal with have no clue that their drug use impacts so many. Is your friend an addict? Just the term addict can change one's perception. Whatever is going on in her head is beyond anything i can attemp to diagnose in a post, but she clearly hates herself and life because of this hate. To escape herself could be one of many underlying mechanisms. She needs help.
Be careful attempting to reason with the unreasonable. Make sure to not attack but clearly emphasize that you understand (the phrase "this is what I am hearing you say"). The reality is that an intervention is only effective for people that realize they are an addict. Reiterate to them that who they were before addiction was so much more functional and healthy and everything changed after addiction. Establish clearly understood boundaries with consequences and stick to them with everyone that is there for the intervention.
Your friend can react in many different ways to the intervention (guilt, anger, denial, fear, silence, vengeance among many more thoughts/feelings). Whatever she is doing is not working...and you cannot be afraid of losing your friendship because it sounds as though the friendship is already lost at the moment. Be strong and patient, but it is okay to let go after you feel you have done everything you could.
