Used to hunt with a guy that owns his own mech shop.  He said if the light isn't red, it doesn't matter and won't hurt anything.

Mine is on because of a carbon sensor or some crap.  I will never fix it.

finally had a dude look at mine a few months ago that had been on for years.  there were like 3 cylinders mumped up and some other stuff, so I just waited until it quit running on I-70 over by that Abilene sex shop and called a salvage yard and just bought a new car

Autozone and places like that can run a diagnostic on your car and produce a code. Sometimes they can tell you what the code means and sometimes they can give it to you for you to look up online.

I've had the gas cap reading, and also a cylinder misfire. The cylinder misfire was because my spark plug wire was touching my steering column.  I ended up getting a shorter wire and it solved it immediately.

Too many rough ridin' tabs open, and apparently I'm not quick enough with the delete.

Sounds like the beginning of a porno or horror movie.

You can go buy a code reader at O'Reilly's for $150 or so.  It will spit out a code and then you can look it up on the net to see how serious it is.  Most of those will also clear out the code for you as well.  I have one and it works great.

why buy the code reader though when the o'reily's people will just use one of theirs and check your car for you for free?

I don't like going to O'Reilly's...or any store for that matter more than I have to.  Plus, you can throw back some brews with your neighbor while you hook up their sled and see what the problem is.

This was in fact the reason why I have one.  ;)
