Title: Horror Movies Thread
Post by: Stevesie60 on April 19, 2014, 03:53:37 AM
This thread is ONLY for fans of horror movies.

There is a pretty fine line between a great horror movie and a really terrible one. But some terrible ones are so bad that it makes them great! What are some of your favorites? I just watched "Let The Right One In". Very original, I enjoyed it a lot.

My current favorite is probably "Child's Play 2". Every set in every scene is so perfect and the deaths are so fun.

The most disturbing one I have ever seen is definitely "Martyrs". Hard to recommend it to people because it could mess you up for a while.

Don't get me started on "Evil Dead", the original or the remake. So good in so many ways. Just absolutely top notch horror flick right there.

And then you have the really fun ones that make fun of the entire premise and are basically meta-horror movies like "Scream" and "Cabin in the Woods". I could watch those on repeat.

John carpenter's The Thing, Event Horizen, alien/aliens.

The exorcism of Emily Rose really messed me up for a while. I swear I woke up at 3am for a week straight then couldn't sleep the rest of the night. On the last night our home phone rang at 3am and nobody was there.  :horrorsurprise:

Only movie I ever had to stop watching and finish the next day.

Evil Dead is clearly the Cadillac of the genre...I haven't seen the remake, did they do a good job with it?

Entirely too many modern Horror movies are PG-13

The Saw franchise turned into a mockery of itself toward the end, but the first one/couple were pretty damn intense

Probably not an 'according to Hoyle' Horror movie, but the single most intense/'real' scary movie I've ever seen is Funny Games w/ Tim Roth & Naomi Watts...if you haven't seen it, you are missing out - http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0808279/?ref_=nm_flmg_act_16 (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0808279/?ref_=nm_flmg_act_16)

True Story, when I was 5 I snuck down from my room & watched part of/most of Poltergeist from the steps when my Parents & Sister were watching it...nightmares for 6 months b/c of the pool scene specifically

Soft core pron horror movies are really the tits.
Usually prom or cheerleader related. I can't think of the name of any of them off the top of my head, but they can be fun to watch.

Convince Stevesie Wife that its a romance film and she will believe it for the first 2/3rds of the flick.  Then it gets weird.  Really good.

Funny Games (Original or Naomi Watts shot for shot remake) are both really good.

Evil Dead was a good call to remake because you can just make it really over the top and can't go wrong.

Enjoyed Drag Me to Hell quite a bit in a fun Sam Raimi way.  Don't Be Afraid of the Dark was also fun.  Raimi and Del Toro should be the only people allowed for big budget horror.  Also, probably whoever did Cabin in the Woods.

Mr. Bread would probably be able to offer more insight than me, but Martyrs is about as disturbing as it gets. I come back to Dead Alive but that's only because all the blood was claymation and claymation makes me sick to my stomach for some reason. Probably too much Celebrity Death Match as a kid.

I woke up early this morning and there was this movie called "Poultreygeist: Night of the Chicken Dead" on. It is rated MA, but I think it is for disturbing reasons (not sexual). I watched for a about 5 minutes and it was sick as efff. Like, oh the horror.

Based on 5 minutes of viewing, I would not recommend.

I enjoyed "Don't be afraid of the Dark" more than I thought I would, probably b/c I remember getting creeped out by the original.  I also recently watched "Mama" and it was not so terrible as I expected (I love horror movies, but I think they must be really hard to make because most suck).

I liked House of 1000 Corpses better because I think nightmarish images are so fun to watch, especially when they're from the imagination of Rob Zombie. The torture stuff just doesn't do it for me anymore. The first couple of Saw movies were about the only way to do it creatively, so I doubt they make another series with that premise as good as I found Saw. But the soundtrack in Devil's Rejects is about as good as it gets.

Audition was not good. A crazy chick performing acupuncture on a guy while cutting off his feet was the only "scary" scene in the whole movie. I prefer the fun, make-you-jump scary movies over torture porn, especially after seeing Martyrs because every torture movie should be rated G compared to that one.

Report after watching 3 of the most infamous slasher trilogies of all time:

1. The Friday the 13th series has the most classic themes of slasher movies of all time, pretty much set the standard for them.

2. Nightmare on Elm Street is my favorite. So much fun, and really clever death scenes throughout the series. Some of the overall plot lines got pretty bogus, but since it was already such a bizarre concept it kind of worked. Loved that they made Freddy this charismatic killer who had one liners and a face to him instead of a mask like every other slasher killer.

3. Halloween is definitely the most suspenseful. The third one doesn't have Michael Myers in it because they were originally going to have Michael killed off after the second movie and continue to do scary stories that all happened to fall on Halloween. After the third one failed so terribly they brought Michael back for the rest of the series. They explain away the deaths of the second movie pretty laughably, but hey, it's a horror movie, what can you do.
Title: Re: Horror Movies Thread
Post by: hemmy on November 11, 2014, 12:24:36 AM
When Friday the 13th was made one of the producers wasn't sure how to make a slasher movie so he was told to watch Halloween and copy it.

As for Halloween 3 I used to hate it as kid but it is better than a lot of the sequels IMO.

Also, F13 part 3 was in 3D, I remember buying it with the red and blue 3D glasses (came with 2 pairs!).

We live in rural NC and have terrible internet access, so streaming movies is pretty much out of the question. We've had Netflix for many years and have seen probably half of all the horror movies they have on there. Some of the better ones (no order):

Blood Creek
The Midnight Meat Train
The Theatre Bizarre
Tucker & Dale vs. Evil (more of a comedy)
Shutter
The Orphanage

Reading through this thread, I've added Martyrs, Audition and Funny Games to our queue. I see "Open Grave" is coming tomorrow. Pan's Labyrinth wasn't all that scary, but had some pretty memorable scenes. Need to watch that one again one of these days.

Bumping this thread to see if any of you have seen good horror in the past six years that I can enjoy this month. It looks like there are some in here already that I haven't seen.
recent successful offerings from Aster, Eggers, Flanagan:
Hereditary
Midsommar
The Witch

also classics like Rosemary's Baby, the Exorcist, and the Shining are all still very good

I watched THE VVITCH again recently. I get that it's not for everyone, but it has the flavors I crave. How old was ATJ at that time?

Since you like Hereditary and Midsommar (great rough ridin' movie), have you seen X or Red Rocket?

I watched THE VVITCH for the first time last night.  Holy crap.  I've always kind of been on the fence about billy goats but not any more.  :ohno:

I appreciated the fidelity to contemporaneous dialect. Could take or leave the goat. Also, the pirate thing was weird.

That was actually the only redeeming part of the Black Phillip vignette.

I didn't realize it was coming on HBO at all and now I'm excited for it.

Guillermo Del Toro's show hits netflix tomorrow as well.  Should be some A+ Halloween week content.
