This thread is ONLY for fans of horror movies.
There is a pretty fine line between a great horror movie and a really terrible one. But some terrible ones are so bad that it makes them great! What are some of your favorites? I just watched "Let The Right One In". Very original, I enjoyed it a lot.
My current favorite is probably "Child's Play 2". Every set in every scene is so perfect and the deaths are so fun.
The most disturbing one I have ever seen is definitely "Martyrs". Hard to recommend it to people because it could mess you up for a while.
Don't get me started on "Evil Dead", the original or the remake. So good in so many ways. Just absolutely top notch horror flick right there.
And then you have the really fun ones that make fun of the entire premise and are basically meta-horror movies like "Scream" and "Cabin in the Woods". I could watch those on repeat.
-
I was going to #yawn this thread, but you named some great movies.
Need to do a cabin in the woods pak sometime, holy eff I can watch that so many times. Easily one of my favorite movie theater experiences ever
-
John carpenter's The Thing, Event Horizen, alien/aliens.
The exorcism of Emily Rose really messed me up for a while. I swear I woke up at 3am for a week straight then couldn't sleep the rest of the night. On the last night our home phone rang at 3am and nobody was there. :horrorsurprise:
Only movie I ever had to stop watching and finish the next day.
-
My heart feels like it's going to come out of my chest during the really scary ones

Evil Dead is clearly the Cadillac of the genre...I haven't seen the remake, did they do a good job with it?
Entirely too many modern Horror movies are PG-13
The Saw franchise turned into a mockery of itself toward the end, but the first one/couple were pretty damn intense
Probably not an 'according to Hoyle' Horror movie, but the single most intense/'real' scary movie I've ever seen is Funny Games w/ Tim Roth & Naomi Watts...if you haven't seen it, you are missing out - http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0808279/?ref_=nm_flmg_act_16 (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0808279/?ref_=nm_flmg_act_16)
True Story, when I was 5 I snuck down from my room & watched part of/most of Poltergeist from the steps when my Parents & Sister were watching it...nightmares for 6 months b/c of the pool scene specifically
-
Don't like horror.
Inland Empire, turned up on a good system, alone, is tough.
-
disturbia.. great song and greatest movie.. also joy ride with paul walker and steve zahn I mean holy crap
-
Soft core pron horror movies are really the tits.
Usually prom or cheerleader related. I can't think of the name of any of them off the top of my head, but they can be fun to watch.

Convince Stevesie Wife that its a romance film and she will believe it for the first 2/3rds of the flick. Then it gets weird. Really good.
Funny Games (Original or Naomi Watts shot for shot remake) are both really good.
Evil Dead was a good call to remake because you can just make it really over the top and can't go wrong.
Enjoyed Drag Me to Hell quite a bit in a fun Sam Raimi way. Don't Be Afraid of the Dark was also fun. Raimi and Del Toro should be the only people allowed for big budget horror. Also, probably whoever did Cabin in the Woods.
-
The Phantasm movies are pretty great IMO. They filmed a new one recently but I'm not sure about the release date. Here is a teaser trailer for the new one - Phantasm V Ravager http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=X1wOobOGa4w
-
nightmare on elm street is probably my favorite top to bottom, followed by the exorcist, halloween, and friday the 13th and the omen
i've not seen cabin in the woods but saw it is on EPIX right now so am going to try to catch it
-
I dressed up as Freddy for so many halloweens as a kid.
I still have the glove somewhere.
-
Mostly because of this thread, yesterday I watched Evil Dead 2 and Cabin the Woods.
-
The Strangers scared the crap out of me when I watched it the first time.....mainly because I feel like that could happen in real life. That movie has been taken off the list as one we watch at the lake.
-
The Descent is hands down my favorite horror movie. I like to imagine the sequel never happened because that ending is perfect.
-
I'm still looking for that horror movie that keeps me up, still haven't found it. I love watching them in hopes of getting scared, but it never seems to happen.
-

Do you like makes-you-jump scared or I-can't-believe-my-eyes-just-saw-that-and-my-brain-processed-it kind of scared?

Mr. Bread would probably be able to offer more insight than me, but Martyrs is about as disturbing as it gets. I come back to Dead Alive but that's only because all the blood was claymation and claymation makes me sick to my stomach for some reason. Probably too much Celebrity Death Match as a kid.
-
claymation makes me sick to my stomach for some reason.
well now the real reason you hate Tool comes out

The Conjuring :horrorsurprise:
Watched it in theaters, wearing a baseball cap so I could covertly use the brim to avert my eyes cuz i'm a scared little beotch.
-
I mean, the Conjuring is rated R, but there is no profanity, no graphic violence, and no nudity. It's just rated R for its overall tone.
-
Child's Play 2 is so much better than the first one. Like, moreso than Terminator 2 is better than Terminator 1.
-
The Conjuring :horrorsurprise:
I am terrified by the trailer. I don't get the desire to watch stuff like

I'm pretty pumped for "Deliver Us from Evil". It's got Eric Bana and Olivia Munn and the opening exchange in the trailer is pretty foreboding...https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JBxTF_DxN8k

Trick'r Treat was pretty nice
still a huge fan of Troll 2 (from an awesomely bad perspective)
-
I woke up early this morning and there was this movie called "Poultreygeist: Night of the Chicken Dead" on. It is rated MA, but I think it is for disturbing reasons (not sexual). I watched for a about 5 minutes and it was sick as efff. Like, oh the horror.
Based on 5 minutes of viewing, I would not recommend.
-
30 Days of Night.
That's the way you do vampire movies.
-
Just watched "House of 1000 Corpses". Rob Zombie must have had a rough childhood.
-
I enjoyed "Don't be afraid of the Dark" more than I thought I would, probably b/c I remember getting creeped out by the original. I also recently watched "Mama" and it was not so terrible as I expected (I love horror movies, but I think they must be really hard to make because most suck).
-
Just watched "House of 1000 Corpses". Rob Zombie must have had a rough childhood.
The Devils Rejects? Also Rob is making a new movie now :excited:
-
My favorites are movies like Cabin in the Woods, Gremlins, and Army of Darkness. I enjoy them more when they are as funny as they are scary.
-
A totally awesome spoof on slasher flicks is Tucker and Dale vs. Evil.

It probably wouldn't seem that great now, but 25 years ago Candyman was awesome!

Candyman, The Audition, or Devil's Rejects tonight? I may knock out 2 of the 3 if I'm feeling extra crazy.

@Stevesie60, what nights do you have off next week? I'm going to show up at the new casa de Steve with some fresh Carmike Cinema popcorn and some horror flicks on dvd.

I liked House of 1000 Corpses better because I think nightmarish images are so fun to watch, especially when they're from the imagination of Rob Zombie. The torture stuff just doesn't do it for me anymore. The first couple of Saw movies were about the only way to do it creatively, so I doubt they make another series with that premise as good as I found Saw. But the soundtrack in Devil's Rejects is about as good as it gets.

So Stevesie60 you haven't watched Audition yet? If you had, you would be making some pretty mumped up entries into the dream thread if you had.

I watch movies based on the number of people that have recommended it. You're like, the only one currently recommending The Audition.

Isn't that the movie where an actor died on set because a prop gun was loaded with live rounds?

What in the world happened in here?

Bias and '60 I wish I would have seen this last night to stop you from watching candy man

Welp, with about 20 mins left crap started getting real weird. So if you watch it just skip to that part, plot points are pretty unnecessary.

Yeah. It's fun, nothing to write home about. A lot of people I know loved it though so maybe I'm the odd one out.

Audition was nothing compared to Martyrs. Like, not in the same ballpark, not even the same sport, etc.
-
I'll watch it tomorrow, horrorsie60

You're Next is interesting. More of a thriller than a horror film.
Gonna win 'em all!

I initially watched it pre-Saw and it was pretty great to HS ChiCat. Once the torture porn horror genre was established, it has seem kind of dated.

Who in the hell would keep a creepy ass doll like that in their house overnight? Nope, not in a million years.
-
What an intense and frightening opening 10 minutes.
-
Yes, great movie so far. Not waiting until halfway through the movie to get things started. Between this and the Royals tomorrow, I probably won't sleep tonight.
-
I don't want to state the obvious but something seems fishy about the step mom

Man after talking up that intro I hope it doesn't drop off in blood, death, weird stuff, etc.
-
JFC!
-
I would not be laughing or clapping in that theater. I would be crapping my pants.
-
i saw this in theaters and was very disappointed, i am not gEing, there is no way you find this movie scarier that audition, no way
-
I think it's safe to say that if Steve and I both like a movie then it's probably pretty damn good.
-
GOD DAMNIT MARY SHAW!
-
i mean i guess, you must both have that doll scary thing going, cuz this movie sucked ass
-
Audition was not good. A crazy chick performing acupuncture on a guy while cutting off his feet was the only "scary" scene in the whole movie. I prefer the fun, make-you-jump scary movies over torture porn, especially after seeing Martyrs because every torture movie should be rated G compared to that one.
-
i guess i am affected more by wierdo creepo stuff, possession stuff too, no thanks, everyone has different scary movie creeped out stuff
-
Nope nope nope nope nope
-
I always find it entertaining how often talk out loud to themselves in these movies.
-
What an ending!
-
that doesnt make a lot of sense but i assume you are agreeing with me, which is good, i love being right and having that validation
-
I turned the light on after that clown doll scene. eff that.
-
The Shining.

Torture porn is terrible

They will be laughable by the second movie.
Transport yourself to Pete as a junior high kid and watch the Nightmare on elm street movies and try and sleep a wink (you won't).

I rented the first one over the summer between fourth and fifth grade with a bud from the local IGA store. It really mumped me up for a while.

You're Next is rough ridin' awful. Don't watch it.
-
Whoa whoa whoa, don't blame for You're Next. I said it was overrated. seven's the one you're mad at.
-
You're next is really fantastic, you uncultured n00bs
-
I'm really enjoying the Friday the 13th series. Learned a little something about it. It pretty much introduced slasher films to American viewers, although completely ripping off Bay of Blood which was an Italian horror movie.
-

It's a steaming pile of crap.

You should check out, Dead Silence. Now THAT is a scary flick.

I'm not taking anymore movie recommendations from you. It's not me, it's you.

For the record, I never recommended "You're Next".

Don't you know that everything is yours and Stevesie's fault? Always.

Let me tell you a story about the year that a non-baseball fan became one of the biggest Royals fans around....

Report after watching 3 of the most infamous slasher trilogies of all time:
1. The Friday the 13th series has the most classic themes of slasher movies of all time, pretty much set the standard for them.
2. Nightmare on Elm Street is my favorite. So much fun, and really clever death scenes throughout the series. Some of the overall plot lines got pretty bogus, but since it was already such a bizarre concept it kind of worked. Loved that they made Freddy this charismatic killer who had one liners and a face to him instead of a mask like every other slasher killer.
3. Halloween is definitely the most suspenseful. The third one doesn't have Michael Myers in it because they were originally going to have Michael killed off after the second movie and continue to do scary stories that all happened to fall on Halloween. After the third one failed so terribly they brought Michael back for the rest of the series. They explain away the deaths of the second movie pretty laughably, but hey, it's a horror movie, what can you do.
-
When Friday the 13th was made one of the producers wasn't sure how to make a slasher movie so he was told to watch Halloween and copy it.
As for Halloween 3 I used to hate it as kid but it is better than a lot of the sequels IMO.
Also, F13 part 3 was in 3D, I remember buying it with the red and blue 3D glasses (came with 2 pairs!).

Anyone want to live blog a movie tonight?

You really like to brag about how many scary movies you have the time to watch, huh?

ERII and Stevesie live blogging Carrie (2013) together like best buds do!
-
I have a half bag (large size) of 1 day old Carmike Cinema popcorn that I'm currently enjoying.
-
Plug it up! Plug it up!
-
Well this is already one of the grossest horror movies I've ever seen.
-
ERII, you recognize that song from the Shameless season finale of season 3?
-
So to recap so far, Carrie period'd in the shower at school, had tampons thrown at her, then was punished at home for showering with girls by religious mother. 1 popular girl regrets it, other popular girl uploads video to the youtubes.
-

Yea, no.
-
Chris is kind of a bitch.
-
I can't get over Kitty in a serious role.
-
this is pretty boring so far tbh
-
There is a chance that I fall asleep before this is over.
-
Well the soundtrack has been pretty great.
-
Wait, the bucket killed him?
-
Whoever did the CGI for this film just couldn't quite get the liquids right.
-
LOL when her face goes through the windshield.
-
Not great. Those special effects got worse throughout the already bad movie.
-
I read carrie in like 6th grade and was very :sdeek: to the plug it up part
-
Saw The Babadook last night. Really enjoyed it. The ending left something to be desired but by and large, one of the better horror movies that I've seen in a while. Although not perfect, the babadook was one of the creepier creatures that I've seen in a movie as well.
-
The Descent -
Jeepers Creepers - great first 15 minutes and great last 30 seconds. Besides that very meh.
-
The Descent -
rediculously under appreciated movie. i get frustrated when i hear of people who haven't seen it and MAD when people say mean things about it.
-
Name the last horror movie you saw that didn't feature a car that wouldn't start. You can't.

cabin in the woods

Yeah. Hemmy has never been more wrong outside of his choice of phone platform.

You know what's a really good movie? The hills have eyes. It really has it all.

little bit too sadistic for me to enjoy

Yeah, the rape scene is a bit much, but overall it's very entertaining.
-
never seen it
-
i can't recommend Oculus enough.
i just want to reiterate, and maybe puniraptor can help me out here, that this is an incredible horror movie.
-
We live in rural NC and have terrible internet access, so streaming movies is pretty much out of the question. We've had Netflix for many years and have seen probably half of all the horror movies they have on there. Some of the better ones (no order):
Blood Creek
The Midnight Meat Train
The Theatre Bizarre
Tucker & Dale vs. Evil (more of a comedy)
Shutter
The Orphanage
Reading through this thread, I've added Martyrs, Audition and Funny Games to our queue. I see "Open Grave" is coming tomorrow. Pan's Labyrinth wasn't all that scary, but had some pretty memorable scenes. Need to watch that one again one of these days.
-
Anybody got anything queued up for Friday the 13th?

It was very good. The reveal was excellent. The way they make you unsure of what is real and what is imagined throughout the movie is excellent. And the ending was excellent. Thank you for the recommendo, puni.
-
did you guys really make me watch some WWE movie? :frown:
-
the #acting was distractingly poor, even for a horror/thriller
-
i bet candyman was better
-
i "enjoyed" candyman more, that's for sure
-
has anyone ever seen Metamorphosis: The Alien Factor (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0107561/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1) ?

Bumping this thread to see if any of you have seen good horror in the past six years that I can enjoy this month. It looks like there are some in here already that I haven't seen.
-
I hate horror movies. My wife loves them. So sometimes I just bite the bullet and see one for brownie points.
We went and saw Smile over the weekend, it’s frightening and actually pretty decent.

Their planting people on public TV, like NFL games, has caught my attention and I'm thinking about going to the theater for it.
-
Working up the nerve to watch Hocus Pocus 2. Will probably watch this weekend and report back ITT
-
Barbarian is an amazing film. Highly recommend

recent successful offerings from Aster, Eggers, Flanagan:
Hereditary
Midsommar
The Witch
The Lighthouse
Haunting of Hill House
Midnight Mass
also classics like Rosemary's Baby, the Exorcist, and the Shining are all still very good

I watched THE VVITCH again recently. I get that it's not for everyone, but it has the flavors I crave. How old was ATJ at that time?
Since you like Hereditary and Midsommar (great rough ridin' movie), have you seen X or Red Rocket?
-
I have not seen either of those
-
i enjoyed X, haven’t gotten around to watching Pearl yet
-
the new zealand actor nailing the mcconnaughey accent weirded me out
-
i watched The Descent last night, and it kind of sucks? somebody rewatch it and tell me why it's good
-
also the Candyman watchalong ITT is so great, lol
-
I watched Black Phone last night. It was ok.
-
I watched Black Phone last night. It was ok.
I was disappointed, but I think my expectations were too high.
-
Yeah, none of the paranormal stuff had any payoff at all for me. It was more or less a kidnapping movie that I've already seen. Not bad, but not great, either.
-
Finally got around to watching X last night. It's not particularly groundbreaking, but it's still a good throwback horror film in the spirit of the Texas Chainsaw Massacre.
-
The Descent -

I watched THE VVITCH for the first time last night. Holy crap. I've always kind of been on the fence about billy goats but not any more. :ohno:

I appreciated the fidelity to contemporaneous dialect. Could take or leave the goat. Also, the pirate thing was weird.

you could take or leave Wouldst thou like to live deliciously?
I don't believe you

That was actually the only redeeming part of the Black Phillip vignette.

I irl lol'd
-
eff you, Halloween! Years of dedication and allegiance and you end this franchise like this?!
-
I don’t watch horror movies. They are not my jam at all.
-
Barbarian is an amazing film. Highly recommend
I thought this came out on HBO Max tonight! It comes out on Tuesday. :curse:

I didn't realize it was coming on HBO at all and now I'm excited for it.
Guillermo Del Toro's show hits netflix tomorrow as well. Should be some A+ Halloween week content.
