Title: Kickstarter
Post by: CNS on April 10, 2014, 05:01:40 PM
Is about as fantastic as it gets.  I get on there and all of a sudden it's like 4 hours later and I have no recollection of time passing.

There was a flying bike on there a few months ago!

It's how Zach Braff paid for his lastest movie.

I guess I didn't really know what this was.  I thought it was like a small scale venture capital type thing where people funded projects in hopes of a pay day.  Do people just donate as a feel good type thing?

Yes and no.  Depends on the project and the donation level. often you get a free whatever they are building.

 :curse:

It's going to be interesting when the movie is financially successful and he pockets a boatload of money.  Gosh I hope he can save that money this time so he won't have to deal with the evil studios for his next movie.  Otherwise he'll be left with no options other than to have his fans foot the bill for his business ventures.

Celebrities should use kickstarter like Doug Stanhope did. To help people. http://thecomicscomic.com/2013/05/24/doug-stanhope-raises-50000-for-atheist-survivor-of-oklahoma-tornado/

The aforementioned fuckfaces have or are using it to start private business ventures. They're using it as a venture capital investment firm without having to offer up equity and it really pisses me the eff off.

It really isn't very ethical to take dumb people's money like that. I would like the site a whole lot better if the people were selling equity rather than taking handouts.

I can't stand to watch wealthy and powerful people get even more powerful and wealthy on the backs of donations from dumb poor people.

Dumb thing to get mad about. No one is forcing anyone to donate, kickstarter just provides the medium and takes a cut off the top.

I imagine the dumb poor people get some sort of enjoyment out of having participated in the creation of something they otherwise would have had no possibility of being involved with.  An intrinsic value if you will.  Sadly condescending on the part of poster Metalhead here.

In the case of Levar Burton, it's a rough ridin' ruse. The entire advert talks about Reading Rainbow's time on PBS and charitable contributions. He neglects to mention the fact that he is using the kickstarter money to start his private company that will sell Reading Rainbow software to school districts. People are donating to the scumbag under the pretense that the money is funding a nonprofit. What can't you rough ridin' rubes grasp about that?

Reading Rainbow was the best, back in the day.

If any company misrepresents what they do, I would imagine that they would be open to a lawsuit of some sort and possibly Kickstarter somehow not releasing/processing/etc the raised money.

Maybe look into that if Levar stole your humanitarian of the year donation money.

I did not donate. The advert compelled me to action, as I loved Reading Rainbow as a kid. Before I decided to donate, I did a little research and discovered that what he is starting is a for profit, not a non-profit. The only Kickstarter I've ever donated to was Doug Stanhope's Atheists United Tornado Recovery fund.

I donated to a pretty awesome diy bluetooth 4 control board thing that you can dl aps for and basically make it control anything you want.  Haven't had time to mess with it yet, though.

Doesn't seem all that misleading to me.

He doesn't mention anything about the fact that it's a for profit company in the kickstarter video.

I'd rather have a caring nice dude that most people know teaching the tykes and making a little dough than Pearson Learning offering another ripoff.

Allegedly you don't skate, but just regular walk, and the motors do the rest.
