Title: I'm not Weber material
Post by: Dugout DickStone on March 31, 2014, 09:58:30 PM
So I needed a good title for a thread about mowing my lawn.  I pay (currently) someone but am considering buying a mower.  What do you have?  What should I get?  Here are the criteria:

1.  No rider, I'll keep paying Henry before I buy some $6k behemoth that I have to male genitals with and I also have to entry gates to the back lawn that are probably too narrow to drive through;
2.  My lot is about 15k sq.ft;
3.  I want to mulch, not bag;
4.  There is some "topography" (pro term) in the back yard.

Besides the above, money isn't a real consideration so tell me what does a Weberite do?

Honda makes a good mower... i dunno, just stick to gas mowers and you'll be fine...  i don't know why they keep making electric power tools for the yard, they all suck.

I got this one a couple years ago, works great, has variable speeds for fast or slow walking, mulches great. The only thing I've had to do is sharpen the blade. It also starts easily with one or two pulls, every time.

Do you think Dallashorn still has that Honda for sale?

I've known some people over the years who have cut lawns to supplement their income, and this would be their advice.

Do you like to do yard work? Do you pay a company/ adult or a kid? If the answer to the former is no, and the answer to the latter is kid then keep paying the kid, especially if he does a good job and his dad helps him or used to help him when he was younger. If you don't like yard work and you currently pay a company then go find a good kid and pay him.

Except their consumer line is made by MTD.

Lawnmowers are nearly the same these days even Toro has many models by MTD.

My mower died last summer and I decided that was a sign and haven't looked back. Paying someone else is the best.

I know you said no riders but this little baby fits in tight spaces and is really more maneuverable than a push, will cut your mowing time in half and that means more beer time.  This thing will go through your gate, unless you're a hobbitt, and should last until you die.

Keep paying Henry.

Yep.  Until kids are old enough to unseat him.

If you just buy the cheapest mower in the store, you will get a much better workout. If that isn't why you are doing this, then just pay somebody else to do it.

I will also add that I'm not a huge fan of self-propelled mowers with a lot of topography, but then again I've never used a nice one.

I won't add much to this thread other than my old roommate left me a Troy-built with a Honda engine about 7 years ago.  I have never serviced it once, no change of oil (they do have oil, right?) or filters, no blade sharpening, no new spark plug, and the little guy just keeps going.  Starts on the first pull every time.

Just bought a Honda at Home Depot this weekend to replace our Deere riding mower.  So far I like it.  Also for perspective our lot is 0.5 acres.

It's not much of one, but reasons besides exercise and/or tons of free time to fire your lawn guy and push mow your yard every week? :dunno:

Did you know that Honda and John Deere with powers combined is an unstoppable powerhouse!?   :surprised:

I went with this Toro a few years ago due to the Honda engine and have been fairly happy with it.  It has an aluminum deck that is a nice compromise between the heavier steel deck of a Deere and the Honda's composite deck.

I do miss my old Lawn Boy when mowing around the swing set and other crap in the back yard, those old Lawn Boy's with the offset front wheel are hard to beat as a trim mower.

Get rid of your lawn.

Native, drought-resistant landscaping is really the only ethical way to go.
