Title: oscar WEBER MUSHES MARQUETTE, AGREES TO EMAW CONTRACT EXTENSION
Post by: Pete on March 23, 2014, 12:29:35 PM
It's his HOME TOWN, a school with a rich basketball tradition, a HUGE basketball budget, and GREAT facilities!

Quote
At more than $260,000 per player per year, Marquette spends more on men's basketball than any school in the country except Duke. At $2.8 million a season, Williams was drawing a top-10 salary. The Golden Eagles stay in five-star hotels and little expense is spared on the coach during recruiting trips.

oscar WEBER, YOU HOMETOWN IS CALLING!

It's a match made in heaven.  Hearing rumors that they've agreed to a 5 year deal already.  It's a shame, he really had the program on the upswing.  I just hope we can find a suitable replacement.

They think they can get Shaka Smart or Marshall...

Shaka has turned down better gigs, and Marshall will be able to have Brad Stevens options in about a year or two.

Coaching searches are really a treat to follow.  You get a real sense of expectations vs. reality that you don't usually get a glimpse of otherwise.

Fwiw the people I know say there is 0% chance Marquette are even going to contact oscar. They could be trying to pull a "these are not the droids you are looking for" on me though.

you also said we were going to wear purple uniforms in our ncaa game

Yeah but that is going off the pattern of the Cats wearing the purple unis for "big" road games.

You are clearly speculating with no real information here
The only rumors have been from message boards and other social media. Here is proof..

no talk of oscar in any of those

None of those articles quoted oscar as saying he would not leave us for Marquette
I was proofing that nobody outside of message boards and social media are talking about it.

I don't know Luke.... seems like the writing is on the wall. You'll get over this quicker if you face the denial ....

Goodbye oscar and thanks for the Confy last year!

I worked really, really hard to find somebody that would tell me that oscar Weber cannot get it done, or that oscar Weber is not a good coach, or oscar Weber has got a problem, or some other thing.  To be honest, the further I dug, the better, and better it got.  I simply could not find anything.

http://www.kstatesports.com/sports/m-baskbl/spec-rel/033112abd.html

In fairness to Currie, it's not like there was a time machine in the Dallas airport hotel that would've let him look at a Marquette message board 2 years later (and after oscar put in what KSU considers 2 highly successful seasons here) to see that they're terrified of oscar being their coach.

While I was googling to find that quote, I read this again - http://msn.foxsports.com/collegebasketball/story/Kansas-State-Wildcats-oscar-Weber-Frank-Martin-John-Currie-new-hire-spells-big-trouble-040112

Also, something looked familiar in the Currie comments welcoming oscar.

Quote
"We are tremendously excited to welcome oscar, Megan and the entire Weber family to our K-State family," Currie said. "Coach Weber exemplifies everything that we were looking for in our next coach, and I look forward to Wildcat Nation having the opportunity to get to know him and his family. Coach Weber's success as a head coach speaks for itself, which includes eight trips to the NCAA Tournament and a national championship game appearance in 2005. But what impresses me even more about Coach Weber are his core values and belief in the advancement of his players not only on the court but also as model student-athletes and citizens. We set out to find the very best basketball coach for K-State, whose personal values and integrity reflect those of our university and appreciates the unique opportunity of being part of our strong basketball heritage and commitment to championship performances, and we are confident that oscar Weber is that person."

Quote
We are thrilled to welcome Jeff, Shanna, Logan, Madison and Jordan Mittie to Manhattan and the K-State family,” Currie said. “Coach Mittie’s success as a head coach at three different institutions, Midwest background as well as his reputation as a top-notch recruiter make him the ideal fit to lead our women’s basketball program. We set out to find the very best basketball coach for K-State, whose personal values and integrity reflects those of our university and one that appreciates the unique opportunity of being part of our strong basketball tradition and commitment to championship performances, and we are confident that Jeff Mittie is that person. I look forward to the entire K-State Nation having the opportunity to get to know him and his family.”

As basketball coach hiring templates go, it's alright.

Is this the kind of thing that the program college profs use to catch plagiarism would alert to?

If it's Marquette, he'd be in an NBA (for now) arena, and for any rabble-rousing oscar'rs who'd show up at the presser, a listing of concession stands that presumably have sinks can be found here: http://www.bmoharrisbradleycenter.com/plan-your-visit/arena-food-beverage

Just for posterity in case KSU gets to Mr. Banks first:

Quote
A source close to the Marquette Athletic Department told The Sports Bank last night that oscar Weber is interested in the Marquette opening. Which isn’t really news given that Weber was also rumored to be interested in the same job back when Buzz Williams was first hired.

Coincidentally, Kansas State fans have already started expressing concern online over the idea that oscar Weber could be leaving KSU to come home to Milwaukee. Our source has not confirmed as of yet that Marquette has reciprocated any interest in Weber.  Of course, that hasn’t stopped Marquette fans from also expressing concern online over the idea that oscar Weber could be leaving KSU to come home to Milwaukee.

So let’s get Donald Rumsfeldian and dig into all the “known unknowns” and “unknown knowns” in this situation.

Why oscar Weber to Marquette makes sense/could happen:

-As a Milwaukee native who attended Marquette high school, this IS his dream job, and it was rumored that he was interested in this gig back when Tom Crean left this job vacant. Openings like this don’t come along everyday.

-oscar Weber has had success at every stop in his coaching career. Covering the Illini for many years, a common Weberism I’ve often heard at press conferences is “just be solid.” Weber is definitely that: solid.

-During his tenure at Illinois, Weber was rumored to be headed to Arkansas in 2007 and Oklahoma in 2011. Obviously, he didn’t bolt Champaign for either gig, but it shows that Weber has a history of exploring all of his options with outside schools. Not that there’s anything wrong with that. We all seek to maximize our career opportunities. There’s nothing more American than being “free enterprise.” After all, SIU was a stepping stone to Illinois for oscar Weber.

-There’s reportedly been contact between Ben Howland and MU already. Howland was rumored to be a finalist for the DePaul job before it was filled by Oliver Purnell, so he’s been linked to the Big East in the past. There’s Shaka Smart to MU rumors being reported as well. How does this impact Weber? The departure of Buzz Williams leaves us with a lot more questions than answers. Some of which we attempted to answer here. When Buzz appeared on CBS this past weekend to discuss his new gig with Virginia Tech, he completely dodged the question of why he left MU. Point is, the situation in Milwaukee is so unclear at this point that we can’t really rule out Weber any more than we can rule out other candidates at this point. (Other than Tom Crean!)

Why oscar Weber to Marquette makes no sense/won’t happen:

-Weber has a great situation at Kansas State. There’s really no reason for him to leave. I reached out to Curtis Kitchen from bringonthecats.com for comment on this situation.
“Could oscar Weber look at Marquette? Sure he could, for several reasons. But, if he leaves K-State, it’s not because of the school or program. The athletics department has never been in better shape, nor has KSU’s position with the NCAA,” Kitchen said.
Bring on the Cats is the K-State SB Nation blog, and a lot more reliable than most of the K-State fan sites out there.

-oscar Weber’s Twitter account has reportedly been blocking posters from a certain K-State fan message board. Which members of that specific board believe is another sign of his imminent departure. I don’t read “Weber’s leaving” into that development. Coaches from every school block board posters and Twitter users from college message boards all the time. If you use social media and/or discussion forums, I don’t need to explain to you why that is.

-Our initial list of potential MU head coaching candidates from Friday night did not include oscar Weber because this hire just “doesn’t past the eye test,” to quote the phrase that’s often used in regards to NCAA Tournament at-large selection.

Do we even need a head coach?
Let me dive into the crazy drawer for a second.
Just let the players coach themselves like an intermeral game.
Just have a strength coach, a few recruiters and some inspirational posters in the locker room.
Have the students vote on the starting lineup each week.
IfI I'm 18 year old, one-and-done,  blue chipper I'm asking where do I sign.

The greatest part of any coaching search is it is an insanely easy opportunity for a school to make themselves look better than they are by leaking how much interest there is in the job, shooting down people they would love to take but who would never come and then ending up with someone who is very meh.  KSU doesn't do this because Currie pays one of his derelict buddies to give him a lazy name that will be quiet.  but we should.

I don't think any of this is funny.  This would be 3 coaches in a short span that completely voluntarily left K-State.

I have been on that board 1 time, it was a couple of years ago. Did you not read the link? A writer for Fox is saying a source close to the athletic program of Marquette is saying Weber let them know he has interest. How is that being paranoid? Reports also speculated that Buzz made close to 3 Million per year, so yes he could make more money.

-Weber getting mushed because Marquette does not reciprocate the interest
-K-State is a thousand times better job than Marquette
-Buzz Williams took a $700,000 pay cut to leave Marquette

He is so not a fit for an urban campus this can only be one of Weber's many media leaks designed at getting him another crazy extension.

It took a special kind of AD to hire Weber after what he did to Illinois.  While I have to say he has done a great job recruiting at KSU he still has not won an NCAA tournament game and still has a lot to prove.  I'd be shocked if a school swooped in to hire him away from you.  And if one did, you should consider yourselves lucky IMO.

Race has nothing to do with it.  City programs like Marquette are more demanding than those in college towns.  There is no football program to take the pressure off.  The school also puts an emphasis on winning.  Weber has a losing mentality and would shrink like a violet in that environment.

Weber hasn't been to the Sweet 16 in 9 years. He has won 2 tournament games in that time.  He is a horrble fit for a program that puts so much of an emphasis on March.

If thats how you feel that is fine.  That said, Its not amazing to lose in the first round of the tourney two years in a row.  Going 1-4 against KU isn't amazing either.

But seriously, I take back the crack about you guys being better off. I really was just pointingout that this is a negotiating ploy trying to get him another extension.  He's not going to Marquette.

What are you even talking about?  oscar Weber has done amazing things in his very short time here at Kansas State, and I for one will be very sad when he leaves us.

He over achieved in the face of adversity

I think D's just mad that the Milwaukee mainstream media reached out to Curtis/BOTC over DScott/GPC for the #KState perspective on this rapidly-developing story.
Well that is a giant slap in the face. Can't help but see why he is so grumpy.

How mad do you think it makes DSF that most of his subscribers are too obtuse/dense (lurking GPC'rs, I'm calling you rough ridin' stupid) to understand what is going on most of the time and then he gets bombarded with questions about stuff like this? I'd curse this place with every breath that I take if I were him.

Was it mellinger who wrote that article about oscar being such a great fit here and how he's not going to leave for anything less than the NBA?  Whoever it was, he's gotta feel like a real rube now.

"In some ways, it was the life chosen for him.

“It goes back as long as I can remember, seems like,” he says.

Even now, oscar Weber gets letters from strangers. They are men and women from Milwaukee, Weber’s hometown, and they tend to write in when he really gets going at a referee. His arms come out of that fold, he slides toward the official, and soon enough his cheeks go red. That raspy voice is picked up on TV."

Everything that twit paul m banks has written has been crap, and it is clear he is talking out of his ass.  To now argue that K-State fans have embraced a Weber move to Marquette is complete and utter bullshit, and beyond just lazy and sloppy reporting.  That a couple dolts on goEMAW, which has the collective maturity of a second grader, have never embraced Weber because they think he isn't cool enough for them means nothing.  They sure don't speak for our fanbase, and for banks to write as if they do makes him an crap-stirring idiot.

I admit I took him at face value when his original article was linked, but I was wrong.  The other posters in that thread were correct...he is creating this entire drama.  I would be absolutely shocked if he actually has a legit source that KNOWS oscar expressed interest.  Shocked.  Someone needs to fit this guy for an atomic wedgie.

I don't even know what maturity has to do with it.  Media much closer to the Marquette coaching search than we are is reporting that Weber is pursuing and/or a candidate for the job.  That significantly affects us.  Of course we're talking about it.

FWIW people I trust say it's more than nothing.  Unlikely at best, but more than something made up here.

He's from the area, the salary it would take to pull him is in their budget, and he's a known commodity in the area.  Of course he's on their radar.

And if the opportunity presents itself, he'd be a moron not to take it.  With every win, the groundswell for Brad is going to get bigger and bigger.  If he's learned anything about us, we have a fetish for our own.

I mean, Christ, Underwood is, like, the mold.  He's from McPherson for effs sakes.

Same as with Huggins, I don't like seeing K-State used by Weber as some sort of career rehab center and a backup plan until the hometown job becomes available.  Loyal coaches like the tennis and lady basketball coaches aren't good enough for Currie, but he allows Weber to treat us like Betty (of Archie/Veronica/Betty love triangle fame).

The additional year to his current contract secures Weber’s services through April 30, 2019. Compensation remains the same per an extension signed in April 2013 and includes a salary of $2.25 million for the additional year during the 2018-19 season. Weber’s annual salary will be $1.85 million for the 2014-15 season and increases by $100,000 for each remaining year per his original 5-year contract ($1.95 million in 2015-16, $2.05 million in 2016-17, $2.15 million in 2017-18 and $2.25 million in 2018-19).

In addition, Weber is eligible to receive a retention bonus of $500,000, which will be due upon the completion of the current contract on April 30, 2019.

Nothing has changed from his original contract in terms of buyout, so this is all purely symbolic and ceremonial.

Any thought that he might take the Bradley job? Heard from a decent source that he might be kicking the tires on the job opening . A few thoughts 1) with Bradley not being very good there would be little expectations and he could likely finish his career there. 2) he's had proven success at that level 3) knows the state and it would be an area him and Lowry would be familiar with. Just thought this was something interesting that I heard that people might like to know.

He's a liability.  Bring back EZ.
We need to get his game legs back under some time.

You can tell that he's cut some weight since the season has started. Ez has been really good the past couple of days, but we're really going to need Davion to be himself by the time conference play starts.

The question is why did Shaka wait so long to switch to zone? Lousy coaching right there, they could have run away with this thing and rated the starters by the under 8 timeout

Oscar; next year. Why even? We're going to finish ninth or tenth in conference, losing a slew of games just like this one. Attendance will dwindle as fans conclude "been there; seen that." Get rid of the loser.

Horrible last possession

I don't know how, especially watching this team, so many of our fans think a 6'9" guy one on one at the rim is a horrible possession? There isn't a single person on this planet, if given the chance to choose beforehand, that would have selected a McGuirl 3, he was the open player, his guy was late helping, over Massoud going one on one at the rim. That was an excellent look a college team, even moreso of one from an offensively challenged team missing their best player.

He ran under the rim and got blocked, it was a low percentage shot was my issue, not who had the ball, at least give yourself the backboard and more and a desperation flip/turn around at the buzzer.

It didn't have to be a The Flush play v Kentucky, but that worked better because you're going to the rim, not falling away from it

These Cats seem pretty fun to watch. I'm admittedly low BBIQ but I thought Nowell, Mark Smith, Ish, Bradford, Selton and Kaosi did things that I liked watching. Like they did fun things on offense and in transition. Nowell was doing JYCish rebounding. I did not think Mike was fun to watch. I was disappointed but not mad about last night. Still too many dumb guarded threes after using up the shot clock dithering 35 feet away from the basket, imho.

He got the ball, in his hands, on the wing, with 5 seconds on the clock. Getting to the rim was 100% the best case scenario. He went under to try to get protection from the rim and it didn't work. I really don't want to play the low BBIQ thing or the if you think this you clearly didn't play the game thing, but considering the circumstance that was 100% the best look that was there to be had in that situation. It's inarguable.

The The Flush play was a called set, a five out clear to create a one on one situation, the circumstances are day and night.
