Title: All K-State Team Since 2006
Post by: Stevesie60 on March 02, 2014, 02:40:07 AM
This is a talking point that has come up multiple times recently (mostly by my doing, but because of PurpleBear's inspiration)

So I think everyone would agree Pullen, Walker and Beasley are on this team, and if you doing then you should leave this thread now.

But one of the main talking points is McGruder vs. Cartier. And the main talking point has been do you put Foster at the 2 and move Pullen to the 1? Or do you put Foster at the 3 and make room for Denis? I think think this is a great question. And there's little doubt in my mind that by the time Foster is a senior that you have to figure out who to put on this team. So let me go ahead and cast my line-up:

Denis, Jake, Foster, Walker, Beasely

1. Denis
2. Pullen
3. McGruder
4. Cartier
5. Beasley

Super Sub 1 - Walker
Super sub 2 - Foster
Super Sub 3 - Kelly
Super Sub 4 - Darren Kent (okay kidding here)

8 man rotation is fine with me. If I had to go with a 10 man lineup, I would include Hoskins and Angel.

I absolutely loved the way Hoskins played in 2007 and was absolutely crushed that his knee got hurt and he could not play with Mike and Bill in 2008.  I just don't have the heart to leave him off the team.  I would take a 2007 Hoskins any time, anywhere.  Ever since then whenever I shoot baskets at the rec or anywhere else I pretend that I am Hoskins making game-winners left and right.

Foster WILL be on the list by the time he's done.

Here is my list of per 100s for K-State players going back to 2001 (http://goEMAW.com/forum/index.php?topic=29917.msg1042757#msg1042757) (2013-14 season numbers aren't current).

Pullen, Martin, Beasley, JO are definites to me right now. Then its between guys like Walker, Angel, Rod, and even Gip for the 5th spot.

If you are going back to 2001, wouldn't you pick Jeremiah Massey over JO?  He was 4th in points per 100.  (Well 5th if you count Jake twice.)

Yes, Massey should probably be on my to be considered list. JO's numbers for boarding and blocking shots were ridiculous and consistent, its hard for me not to appreciate that.

Are we restricted to right now or can we do projections? Because if we are talking about this today, I would say Denis, Jake, Cartier, Walker, and Beasley. However, if we can have Marcus Foster circa 2016 or 2017, I would probably put him at the 2 and bump Jake to the 1.

Michael Beasley (26.2 PPG, 12.4 RPG, 53.2 FG%) was the best college basketball player since 2000 in my opinion.  I'd put Durant at 2 (25.8 PPG, 11.1 RPG, 47.3 FG%), and Stephen Curry a somewhat distant 3 (25.3 PPG, 46.6 FG%, 87.5 FT%)...no one else is even close.

So, if you think anyone else who ever played at KSU is anywhere close to Beasley, then I think you are a rough ridin' fool.

Why wouldn't you want someone who made almost everything he looked at within 20 feet?  And, if he did miss, he's going to get his own put  back?

Heartbreaking. Had he been cleared to play he would be in the conversation for top 10 all-time. His assist numbers would have been through the roof with his ability to drive and dish/feed from the high post having Bill and Mike there for wraparounds/oops. He would have slotted nicely at the 3 having those two there as well, and wouldn't have been completely undersized against every opponent he faced. That's a top 5 what-might-have-been moment alongside Merriwether's foul at the end of the Xavier game. I still genuinely believe we could have had ourselves a NC that year if we weren't dead against Butler. Just a bunch of JMHOs for ya.

Beasley is the best player I have ever watched in a K-State uniform, and will likely be the best player I ever see in a K-State uniform in my life. His offensive efficiency and rebounding are like video game numbers. If he hadn't been on a total transition team with little real experience around him or had stayed for a 2nd season he would've led K-State to a Final 4. I'm convinced of that.

I'm putting the team together based on what I'd want to do/see and not necessarily who was best.

Angel
Pullen
McGruder
Beasley
JO

Bench:
Denis
Foster
Walker
Cartier
Gipson

Final three on the roster: Kelly, Hoskins, Sleeveless Will (not sleeved Will)

Michael Beasley (26.2 PPG, 12.4 RPG, 53.2 FG%) was the best college basketball player since 2000 in my opinion.  I'd put Durant at 2 (25.8 PPG, 11.1 RPG, 47.3 FG%), and Stephen Curry a somewhat distant 3 (25.3 PPG, 46.6 FG%, 87.5 FT%)...no one else is even close.

So, if you think anyone else who ever played at KSU is anywhere close to Beasley, then I think you are a rough ridin' fool.

I had forgotten just how ridiculous his numbers were, especially his rebounding numbers.

Bob Boozer  1957,58,59 seasons
44%    FG
75.4% FT
10.7    Rpg
21.9    Ppg   his career scoring average is 2nd behind Beasley (K-State All time)  Only 77 games compared to Pullen's 135

Big 7 Championship in 58
Big 8 Championship in 59
Holiday Tournament Championship in 59 season
Final Four in 58
Regional Final in 59

He attended Kansas State University, where he helped lead the Wildcats to the 1958 Final Four[2] and where he received All-America honors in 1958 and 1959. A versatile 6’ 8” forward, he was selected by the Cincinnati Royals with the first non-territorial pick of the 1959 NBA Draft, but he postponed his NBA career for one year so that he could remain eligible to play in the 1960 Summer Olympics.[3] During that year he played with the Peoria Caterpillars, where he won the National AAU Tournament title and earned MVP honors for the tournament.[4]

He won a gold medal with the Olympic team after they won eight games by an average of 42.4 points. The team was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame in 2010.[3][5]

I guess it depends on what you are looking for. Do we want the five greatest KSU Cats? The five that would win the most games? Are they the same guys? I don't think so, and I'll go with the second option.

PF: Michael Beasley - He's the best, take any 5 you want and replace one guy with Mike and you get a better five.
F: Bill Walker - Henry gets discounted, because of Beasley, but he was a monster. Played harder than he got credit for and was a good inside/ out scorer and rebounder.
G/F: Rodney McGruder - Defender, great rebounder for his size, you wouldn't need to run plays for Rodney on this team and he would still clean up and get his own.
G: Jacob Pullen - You can't have this team w/ out Jake. Scorer, defender, soul of the team. A fearless leader.
G: Angel Rodriguez - Too bad we won't get to see Angel in top form as a Cat. Still, with a team that can fill it up like this one we need a guy who can distribute and Angel is better, imo, than Denis. Also a better defender. Cats really haven't had the best run of PGs, probably what kept us as good instead of great.

Bench:
Denis
Curt
Cartier
Hoskins
JO

I think several have misinterpreted my argument for Jake being #1 as me not valuing what Mike did. No one will ever put up numbers like Mike did, but Pullen was a much better leader and winner.

I'm must glad the argument is about who is better between these two as opposed to who is better: Larry Reid or Jeremiah Massey?

Jake might be the most loved player on this board, and deservedly so. He's personally my favorite emaw ever, and #retirezero needs to happen ASAP. But he wasn't better than Beasley in damn near every measurable metric.

If we're doing a 12 man roster:

My starting 5:
Pullen
Beasley
McGruder
Clemente
Walker

Bench:
Foster
Hoskins
JO
Martin
Kelly

Angel
Jamar

Gip could replace Jamar if he becomes a true monster next year.

I absolutely loved the way Hoskins played in 2007 and was absolutely crushed that his knee got hurt and he could not play with Mike and Bill in 2008.  I just don't have the heart to leave him off the team.  I would take a 2007 Hoskins any time, anywhere.  Ever since then whenever I shoot baskets at the rec or anywhere else I pretend that I am Hoskins making game-winners left and right.

really great message boarding right here by deez nutz. I feel the same, dn. Easily the most underrated qat in the BBS era.

So what would you say for best starting 5 of tKstate since 2006 against the best of that other team not naming names and who would win?

1. Denis
2. Jake
3. Bill
4. Mike
5. Curtis

1. Elevator nudity
2. Chalmers
3. The greatest since Lebron
4. TROB
5. The white Dbag that blocked all the shots

Kstate wins by 20 because they would score 130 points

Pullen
Foster
Cartier
Beasly
Kelly

b-Hoskins
b-Walker
b-JO
b-Clemente

Really struggle with leaving Hoskins and Walker off.  Against some teams we would need JO for size.  No matter what we would score a ton of points.

Better question would be how they'd stack up against the best of the Big 12 (since the conference's inception). Big 12 selections are open for suggestions/arguments.

G - Dennis Clemente
G - Jacob Pullen
G - Rodney McGruder (or Martin, Trim 3:16)
F - Bill Walker
F - Michael Beasley

PG - Jamaal Tinsley, Iowa State
SG - Chauncey Billups, Colorado
SF - Paul Pierce, Kansas
PF - Kevin Durant, Texas
C - Blake Griffin, Oklahoma

How fun would this be? Jesus

Team 1. final score 105 - 96. Mike with 44 points. Denis yells, "BILLLLLYYYYYYYYY!" before lobbing an alley oop pass for a monster thunder fiery fudge dragon sundae dunk to finish it off.
